  • The intake on modern diesel engines are prone to carbon deposits because of the EGR set up. This causes poor running and poor fuel efficiency. This 6 part series shows the step by step details to remove the intake, clean the carbon and replace the intake.
This video was done on a 2016 Ford Everest 3.2 with 215,000km. Models may have slight variations but the bulk of what you see here will be the same.

Wow. Able to get it off without removing the rail. Really nice. I just did a intake job on a VAG TDI engine and had no choice but to pull the rail. Was dreading having to do that and have to deal with all that mess on the Ranger but not any more!
Also, tip for anyone doing this, carb/egr cleaner eats right through nitrile gloves. I suggest using kerosene in a pump sprayer as it's just as effective, much cheaper, and doesn't eat gloves. Just use the carb/egr cleaner on the sensors only.
The zip tie in drill trick works as great inside the intake as well as the runners and valves. With one of those tire cleaning wire brushes, if you cut it at one end and you can bend it to suit cleaning the awkward geometry inside the intake manifold and plumbing.
After removing the bulk of the filth with scraping, solvent, drilling, I ended up finishing the job with the wheel cleaning brush and oven cleaner. Great thing about oven cleaner is that you can see quite quickly by the colour change if there is still any buildup. And don't forget to clean all the seal surfaces thoroughly but without scratching. Oh, and if you plan to use a pressure washer, be prepared for copious amounts of splatter, blowback, and splash. And remember, that oven cleaner is very caustic. Any of it on your skin will need to be washed off quickly or it will burn you. Get any in your eyes and it will be severe eye damage, so be prepared.

Hi mate. Can’t believe how big a job it is to remove all the parts. Cleaning is the fun part lol. If you bought a PX that’s a few year old, you would have to do this to her. Would be good if there’s a way to avoid this build up happening in the first place. Was the vehicle running rough which lead you to take it apart. Cheers cobber👍

I wonder if doing a egr delete would slowly remove the carbon over time

Killa, great presentation. However , how many hours do you have to do the completed job?

Did you go get a dyno tune to sort out the EGR? To stop soot building up again.?

@@killawattgarage curious, you are so close to egr valve area and you didn't throw in a plate to never do the job again, can I ask why??
      Either way great series.

@@killawattgarage Just wondering but have nobody to discuss - does it make a sense to put the metal plate to block EGR if my Ranger is 120 kkm at the moment to avoid further dirtying of the intake ?

@@pawezmudzki5055 The EGR is part of the emission process that was designed. Changing this upsets people.
