Tbh Manhunt aged surprisingly well. The first game still looks somewhat decent and it's hardcore af. Grainy vhs filter really adds to a snuff movie theme they went for. The ai of the enemies, the insane OST, clever stealth mechanics and sheer difficulty of melee combat really amplify the terror of being hunted. It's a very brutal survival horror they just don't make anymore and I can't recommend it highly enough.
I think old graphics work well in this game's favor as an art-style, because its looks old, rusty and leaves half of the disturbing visuals to the player's imagination.
As much as i would love to see another Manhunt game in the works i seriously doubt it would ever happen. And the major reason being is the Adults Only rating is essential the " Kiss of Death" to video games ever seeing a release date on consoles since Mircosoft, Sony and Nintendo refuse to publish games that carry the AO rating. Furthermore many major retailers don't allow AO games on their shelves. The only other option would be for the game to be released exclusively on PC only and sold online from the developer website.
i can't believe you actually gave a valid reason of why there couldn't be a manhut 3 instead of going "hurr durr it'll get cancelled by snowflakes" or something like that, good job lol
They can totally make a manhunt game with an m rating, we had games like scarface, gta ect that show worse things. i mean in gta v you literally have torture a dude and its not censored in any way and the esrb gave that an M, manhunt could be a great franchise to revive especially with the love of horror right now and horror multiplayer games it could easily have online to go with its main story but rockstar wont make it because all they give a shit about is gta You see what they did with rdr2 online
4:58 i think the camheads were meant to be a hallucation, James takes painkillers in order to survive and thats all he gets for nutrition during the course of the game so it wouldn't a surprise when he takes too much and starts seeing things
Manhunt 1 is really great, especially with all the Gangs variety. Looking at the Concept arts itself, its like at first there will be even more unique gangs like The Warrior.
Does the clown model concepts on manhunt used on the warriors? Cuz the hi hats leader look similar to one of the clown gang on manhunt or the hihats design are just that on the warriors lore?
Most people was love Manhunt 1, But Manhunt 2 has a place in my heart. Seeing innocent man becoming double agent and hurt his family while fighting his second personality was my favourite.
Same I played Manhunt 1 first, but only for like a few minutes for me as much as I liked it I just wanted to play another game but Manhunt 2 really showed how insane of a company Rockstar was many people said Manhunt 1 was brutal but Manhunt 2 came even more brutal. People said, "This game is shit." The media buried this game in shit and pissed on its grave. Society put this game 20 ft under. While the people who played this game tries to dig it out. Manhunt 2 is a very unique game like Manhunt 1 and it deserves a Redemption more than any other horror game. You don't fight demons but you fight Madmen, Terrorists, Agencies hell even the own police. No other game can replace this game in horror not even The Evil Within which is much more tamed compared to this game..
The Leo Kasper with the sleeping pad is supposed to be him when he first activates in Danny’s head. There was so much more planned for Manhunt 2 that never saw the light of day because Rockstar Vienna was closed down without warning. I’m also led to believe that the violence really did have a point like the first game, but the rush to release and focus on GTA 4 and EFLC hindered it. Manhunt 2 should have been terrifying with its MK-Ultra story but in the end it was just a dud. What was even more unusual was it almost seemed like a perfect fit for Rockstar to take a stab at government agencies in the same manner as their GTA games. Domestic Disturbance was meant to have you play as flashback Danny, since by then he was revealed to be Leo and the twist was over. He had to kill three project scientist and they sent their successful experiments out to kill you. Rockstar did a terrible job hiding the twist but the moment Danny killed Pickman was supposed to be the big reveal. But they changed the Danny skin to Leo, and never changed the voice actor. More weapons were features in this game to suit Leo as he can use any item at all to kill somebody.
Ya the game felt super rushed to me. The short length and the weird enemy patrol patterns that almost seem broken are big signs that they were probably in a rush to kick it out the door. Not to mention it feels far more linear and less ambitious then the first game. I still think it was decent but it really needed to be longer and the plot could of been better I could see the twist from a mile away pretty much right at the beginning. The first manhunt really felt like a masterpiece to me I would still really like to see a third one but I doubt it will ever happen with how fragile the world has become.
The first Manhunt has got to be one of my favorite games period, my favorite Rockstar game alongside GTA San Andreas. Excellent atmosphere, original premise, very good soundtrack, FANTASTIC voice acting, and hilarious too, interesting enemies, just a great game all around, in my opinion at least. Its nice to remember how I first learned about this game while I was waaay too young for it, telling my dad how much I wanted it but being unable to find it for the PS2, even ending up playing Manhunt 2 for the Wii before finally getting it for PC. I'm not particularly upset that the series will most definitely not get a new title, there's already enough in the series for me to enjoy, although its always nice when these games get more love. Something I do want to say is the reason why I personally think the series won't continue, and it's not because of the violence, believe it or not a lot of the sensitive people from the US have finally realized that violence in videogames doesn't actually influence how violent someone is, the reason why the series won't continue is simply money. As everyone should know by now Rockstar Games has changed, they care more about money than about their fans, which wasn't always the case, the insane way they've milked the cash cow that is GTA 5 and Online should be enough to prove it, but the way they fucked over modders because of the rushed disaster that was the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition just to get it shipped on holiday season and removing the original trilogy from digital stores so that you HAD to buy the Definitive Edition if you wanted to play those games just makes it obvious. The Manhunt series isn't the same as GTA, or Red Dead Redemption, or even Bully, the amount of time, effort and money that would have to be put on a Manhunt 3 that is of Rockstar's standards of quality would be too much and simply not worth it when they could be putting all those resources on a new GTA, RDD or even Bully 2, or of course, milking GTA 5 for another 5 years. If I somehow could get a wish to make the series get a new game I admit I would be selfish and wish for a Manhunt 1 Remake, not a remaster, while a brand new story would be cool I have to be honest and say that with a series that's fundamentally "get behind the enemy unnoticed and kill them in the most brutal way with the most unconventional item you can come across", there's only so much you can do without changing the core gameplay while also giving a reasonable as to why you're sneaking up on the enemies instead of just using a gun, that's why the original Manhunt worked so well, Cash didn't stumble upon the setting of first the game, he was put there, he's outnumbered, outgunned and has most odds against him and he knows it, that's why executions are so effective, and why everything felt so natural and realistic. In the end, Manhunt will always have a special place in my heart, and I will continue to enjoy it for what it is and what it achieved, maybe one day contribute to the community and be the one that makes that remake, who knows.
The thing about manhunt 1 is that James Earl Cash is killing criminals and murderer's the people he kills should be in jail but instead he takes care of them WITHOUT wanting to, he NEEDS to kill them in order to be released wich Starkweather lied about as seen in the prison when he says "the audience will love you", thats when JEC realised that he was NEVER going to be set free so he has two choices leave town with the journalist OR kill Starkweather so that he cant do the same thing to other's
Got this game when I was 13, loved it. I know killing is kinda the point, but you can actually get through most the stages without killing anyone at all if you're sneaky enough.
Even if they weren't, not gonna happen. I don't know about you but ever since the end of the 6th generation, game designers don't push the enveloppe like they used to.
"How can you kill someone with a flower?" i mean their are flowers like roses that have sharp thorns on them. so i can imagine executions where you cut people via a rose's thorns

That scrapped clown boss reminds me of a character called Chatterbox from Rockstars Warriors game. He leads a clown gang, has John Wayne Gacy style face paint, and has an art gallery level. Maybe Rockstar reused the cut manhunt character and retooled him to fit The Warriors.

Or if it's going to do its own thing, don't go full 2 weird, like do something that is more grounded, like a man that is going full Judge Dread and taking the law into his own hands
This and the Condemned series of games pretty much set the expectation of horror games for many years, it's a shame they aren't revisited as HD remakes at the very least.
It’s incredible how much I learn about this game, just when I thought I heard all the lore with the game, this was my first time hearing the blow torch audio! It makes me happy to see videos on this gem of a game after all these years
I loved Manhunt 1 so much that I think I unlocked all the secret and artwork. Probably would gotten a Platinum Achievement point if it existed in PS2 era.
I still reckon they cut the clowns because they were too close to the smileys. Considering they had the babyfaces, I don't think having Gacy was gonna phase them. Similarly, the camheads would've been a touch too cyberpunk. Still annoyed that they didn't have the tramp killing binbag and surprise boss at the end of a level where he's dodging the lost. There's even an easter egg about him in some cut content for GTAIV. Can't remember the vid I dug it up on though. Thanks for the deep dive. You even managed to bring up one thing I didn't know about w/ the Jesperson link, and I've gone so far down the manhunt rabbit hole I've even watched the out of bounds vids and such!
The Gacy idea was cut from Manhunt, but Rockstar used that idea in The Warriors game, having a gang leader called Chatterbox. Giant dude, obsessed with art, having his art gallery and guess what, face paint resembling a clown / mime.
for manhunt 1 you forgot to mention some unused execution during the pigsy boss fight, there a 3 stage execution with the wire that went unused because you cant get a wire during the boss fight nor bring one into the boss fight
As someone who has played through both and performed all executions: The Orange executions are somehow more gruesome than the Red ones a lot of the time and I really don’t understand it.
Finding Manhunt 2 on PC is like finding a needle in the haystack. Went through so many fake downloads until I finally located it and modded it to restore the gore and cut weapons
There’s an article explaining why they’re never making another Manhunt game again. The only developers that I depend on to make a Manhunt clone is RWS. They’re not afraid of being super edgy. I’d say Puppet Combo, Who’s made games where you play as the killer, but it would be stuck on Patreon forever and left unfinished. My advice for them is to not make anymore new games until the others are finished.
My fiancé bought it for me for my birthday after I told her about this great game. Even to this day, I still think about the game and what could have been, so thank you for shedding some light on the cut content.
Manhunt 2 is a game that I'll never forget, since I played it when I was like 12, but it stuck with me and I think it's insane for Rockstar for putting TWO games like this, but damn they were so good and spooky, it's cool knowing stuff that could've been there, as disturbing as it is
Manhunt 2 is The Most Brutal Game Of All Time don'tcare bout what the media said bout this game its a masterpiece waking up in an insane asylum was one of the best intros to a game. Sad that this game never saw the light of day.
Leo was suppose to be the protagonist in earlier versions. There was plot with puppet show that was project's way for activating sleeper agents (people that were experimented upon after visiting brothel or other place that belonged to the project). That's why Leo (or however protagonist was called) started killing in his pajamas in the middle of the night (probably it was different version of domestic disturbance). As for the camera it was probably for documenting his assassinations for the project as in some versions of psp Manhunt 2 there were models of puppet with toy camera and toy butterfly, so I can imagine that this puppet was instructing us what to do before going out to carry out the orders. After this puppet version there was a version with one timeline (that's where domestic disturbance was third level) and this version had infamous killing the family (or at least Danny's wife) section in not burned down house (it was burned after watchdogs came in looking for Danny as some unused audio hint upon). There was also version with two real protagonists which another few unused audio files indicate for (Leo reacting for being hit). Even the version that was published was heavily cut (museum or student campus levels for example). Shame. This IP has so much potential... Manhunt and The Suffering are my favorite IPs up to this day. There is nothing like them, but I hope that sooner or later they will be back.
I'm not into actual real gore video's. In fact, i avoid those as much as possible. Those actually disturb me. With that being said, this game is fun lol. (As counterintuitive as that sounds). It's very simplistic, yet difficult. I really like the executions. It doesn't disturb me the least bit. Actually pretty satisfying. I really liked the Camheds concept. I was inspired to cosplay them. But it never happened. I'm surprised nobody cosplays as these character's. They're very unique and off the wall unhinged. How would you not want to dress as one of these barbarian's for Halloween? The environment has always been a favorite of mine. I really cherish the dark and gritty, city maze like labyrinth's full of alley ways, rooftop's, canal's, abandoned stores and malls, graffiti and trash everywhere, and just this decrepit style. They made The Warrior's exactly in the same sense. Which is probably why i LOVE that game as well. Even Bully shows remnants of that environment in the Greaser's and Townie's territory. Hell, even in Midnight Club 2, a literal arcade racing game, has alley ways and some grittiness in each of the cities. Another reason why i really like this game is because it's all about melee combat. With gun's being placed later in the story. I'm terrible with gun's in fps. I felt i stood a better chance with melee weapon's. So this game really gave me a chance to finally get up close and personal with the enemies. And since they were the bad guy's trying to kill you, you didn't need to have any sympathy for them. Afterall, you were placed in this hell. Now forced to try and escape and survive by doing these things. Sucks that so much content was cut out. L Imagine this in multiplayer online. I'm sure this is another reason why i also like the game Condemned Origins and Condemned 2 Blood Shot. Those actually had online. (I really missed out on that era). Imagine a First person game, but designed like manhunt, and with Melee weapons in multiplayer online only. A full lobby. Underground. Dark. And enemies coming out of the shadows to kill you with a pipe and machete...
A Manhunt 1 and 2 remaster would undoubtedly be splendidly magnificent to give it a more modern appearance with graphics such as Dead Space video game series. The trouble would definitely be the severe brutality of realistic graphical violence, thereby increasing controversy due to portrayal of verisimilitude violence of viciousness contained therein. I'm a massive Manhunt fan i really wish Rockstar employers and employees would cease to put so much time into both Red Red Redemption and Grand Theft Auto with their online elements, they should develop Manhunt 3 and additionally remaster Manhunt 1 and 2 come on stop playing around and do it.
I hope they do get a remaster just so you get a steaming turd of a product like the 3D trilogy remasters. People need to learn to stop asking for dumb shit like remasters which have almost never been well done, especially not in recent years.

I uploaded the beta for Manhunt 2 PS2 version to the internet archive. Maybe something is in there still that was removed in the retail version. Also, as you probably already know by now, the PC version of Manhunt 2 is also on the archive.
I never got to play Manhunt but I heard so many stories about it growing up, even an early classmate came in scared shitless after getting his hands on it from an older sibling the night before. Despite its controversial past, I think it’s mechanics and it’s push of boundaries set the bar and it let future games be able to takes risks. That’s just my thought, other than that, great video altogether mah G. 🤘🏼
A lot of this video is dedicated to how "disturbing" and "controversial" the series is but if you separate it from its reception at release, its honestly not. The "grotesque" executions we see are pretty obscured most of the time and are outdone in terms of violence by more modern game's that don't even really strive for ultra-violence, even chocking someone in the recent Hitman games is far more gruesome. And even if we don't feel it now you can't deny the ire the GTA series experienced from the mainstream was far harsher even if its subject matter was tamer. In the end it was all cherry-picking, especially when in retrospect Postal 2 came out the same year as Manhunt and is WAY more taboo by today's standards.
@@richielynx The original Postal was 1997, Manhunt was 2003. Also Postal 2 came out out 7 months prior to Manhunts November release, Postal 2 for sure had its protests but not near as bad as Manhunt, probably because Rockstar smartly leaned into it as free advertisement.
Manhunt is more about presentation than the violence itself, Mortal Kombat while being significantly more violent presents itself in a fantastical way while the manhunt games feel more gritty and raw Another thing is your encouragement to be more brutal and the player knowing the fact that he chose a more gruesome execution purposefully to get a better score , In Hitman one can argue for efficiency since Agent 47 knows how exactly to kill someone as fast as possible, but manhunt's executions are slower for sadistic purposes Manhunt is the only game which made me feel disgusted by its violence and I've played many violent games
@@zxtwist like how they ended starkweather was fantastic, more of stuff like that, more dismembering. Saw off the arms then a decapitation, or a cut behind the legs and when the enemy falls a disembowlment on the ground. Many more ideas. The executions were literally too quick and the only one that was like damn was gruesome. Even then I still thought it was kinda tame
Originally in Manhunt each gang have their own boss and boss fight (with an exception of swat and cop) they scrapped the idea probably due to time constraint and difficult mechanic.
My older brother made me my first computer when I was like 11 or 12, he installed some awesome games like Max pain 2, operation flashpoint and manhunt. Manhunt was so hard and interesting for me at that time.
Only way I could see camheads working is if they're just crucified people pegged to a wall with decapitated heads, and cameras in place of the heads. So when the camera's move it looks like someone's turning their head.
Got the first one for ps2 a few years ago at a local gameshop in my area, one of my holy grails in my collection of games. holy fuck, manhunt is something truly special
The PS2 era was the goriest, most violent era. Long gone are the times, lol. Manhunt, Bully, The Warriors, the Punisher videogame. Mortal Kombat was intense, now the violence is more of a nod and a wink, I feel. Even bad games like the Fight Club game had lots of blood and bone-breaking as a mechanic, lol.
Both Manhunt games are excellent but the gameplay is a little rough. My gf just beat the second one, I watched the whole thing though. Manhunt 2 has a very anti government media control vibe whole also parodying the large amount of violence, excess, and general griminess in television. I kinda think it was rockstar saying eff you to the blowback from lawmakers when trying to release gta, and pointing it how media has always had a seedy violent element (especially tv)
Camheds could’ve been people with GoPros strapped to their heads? The thing that’s throwing me off is them in black and white suits - definitely has an ‘Anonymous’ vibe to it.

Furthermore many major retailers don't allow AO games on their shelves. The only other option would be for the game to be released exclusively on PC only and sold online from the developer website.
At least steam allows AO content
"put it on your console or we pull gta from your console" simple as
i can't believe you actually gave a valid reason of why there couldn't be a manhut 3 instead of going "hurr durr it'll get cancelled by snowflakes" or something like that, good job lol
They can totally make a manhunt game with an m rating, we had games like scarface, gta ect that show worse things.
i mean in gta v you literally have torture a dude and its not censored in any way and the esrb gave that an M, manhunt could be a great franchise to revive especially with the love of horror right now and horror multiplayer games it could easily have online to go with its main story but rockstar wont make it because all they give a shit about is gta
You see what they did with rdr2 online
I think with todays graphics it would be 100x more traumatizing to play 😭
4:58 i think the camheads were meant to be a hallucation, James takes painkillers in order to survive and thats all he gets for nutrition during the course of the game so it wouldn't a surprise when he takes too much and starts seeing things
Maybe stark weather had Ramirez/Cerberus drug cash with a hallucinogenic drug for a scene
Manhunt 1 is really great, especially with all the Gangs variety. Looking at the Concept arts itself, its like at first there will be even more unique gangs like The Warrior.
The warriors game is fucking amazing also.
Does the clown model concepts on manhunt used on the warriors? Cuz the hi hats leader look similar to one of the clown gang on manhunt or the hihats design are just that on the warriors lore?
Since the betas of both games are now found media on the Internet Archive, you should make a part 2 about those.
That sorority house stuff was probably repurposed for the Panty Raid mission in Bully.
The Manhunt OST was what got me obssessed w/ the Korg Mono/Poly. It's still one of my favourite synths. It sounds so simple yet so unique.
@@KnjazNazrath I really gotta check out more horror synth, it's surprisingly effective.
I absolutely adore ManHunts 90’s grind house aesthetic! 😩
I want a Manhunt 3 so damn bad
We ALL do but It won't happen sadly
Rockstars too busy milkin gta online

That scrapped clown boss reminds me of a character called Chatterbox from Rockstars Warriors game. He leads a clown gang, has John Wayne Gacy style face paint, and has an art gallery level. Maybe Rockstar reused the cut manhunt character and retooled him to fit The Warriors.
That game is overrated as fuck
He also reminds me of the clown from spawn so maybe they had inspiration from him

i doubt rockstar would make a manhunt 3, but if they ever do, i hope it continues off the mister nasty plot from the first game and not the stuff from the second
Wow.. as a huge Manhunt super fan, the Blowtorch audio was very unsettling. I could imagine that would be very brutal in game and to critics.
I kinda wish they kept it in the game tbh
It’s incredible how much I learn about this game, just when I thought I heard all the lore with the game, this was my first time hearing the blow torch audio! It makes me happy to see videos on this gem of a game after all these years
I loved Manhunt 1 so much that I think I unlocked all the secret and artwork. Probably would gotten a Platinum Achievement point if it existed in PS2 era.
PC Version was better though
Well the movie Peeping Tom had a killer who murdered his victims with a camera, he impaled them with the tripod
Really wish Rockstar would remake this game with this cut content brought back into it. This game is so amazing.
The Camheads would've been so cool, but yeah cameras for heads doesn't seem realistic

4:20 So this is where Dafuqboom got the camera heads models?

My fiancé bought it for me for my birthday after I told her about this great game. Even to this day, I still think about the game and what could have been, so thank you for shedding some light on the cut content.
manhunt still has some of the most effective sound design i've ever heard in a video game
The atmosphere and aesthetic of the first Manhunt is something else, concept art for a game has never looked so good.
My absolute favourite. Thank you for this!
This was an amazing relief and reality check for a teenager like me. Angered and frustrated, thank you Rockstar.
The fact that a Manhunt related video got over 50,000 views in less than a month, in 2022...
Manhunt 2 is a game that I'll never forget, since I played it when I was like 12, but it stuck with me and I think it's insane for Rockstar for putting TWO games like this, but damn they were so good and spooky, it's cool knowing stuff that could've been there, as disturbing as it is
I love Manhunt 2. I beat that on the hardest difficulty.
I liked manhunt 1 a lot more
Manhunt 2 is The Most Brutal Game Of All Time don'tcare bout what the media said bout this game its a masterpiece waking up in an insane asylum was one of the best intros to a game.
Hey the manhunt 1 and 2 betas are now on internet archive
Imagine this in multiplayer online.
Haha, RDO is fucking dead.
I hope they do get a remaster just so you get a steaming turd of a product like the 3D trilogy remasters. People need to learn to stop asking for dumb shit like remasters which have almost never been well done, especially not in recent years.
Mortal Kombat has some really fucked up killings and it was released. Rockstar should do it.

Pretty sure scarecrow IS the tramp you escort. In scarecrows bonus feature it even goes into detail of the tramps appearance and even the sounds he makes as a tramp which seems a bit too detailed considering most of the other features mostly focus on Hunter's personas more so than their identity
I uploaded the beta for Manhunt 2 PS2 version to the internet archive. Maybe something is in there still that was removed in the retail version. Also, as you probably already know by now, the PC version of Manhunt 2 is also on the archive.
Was never really into manhunt, but I’m a simp for lost media, great commentary, and excellent content.
Postal is younger
@@richielynx The original Postal was 1997, Manhunt was 2003. Also Postal 2 came out out 7 months prior to Manhunts November release, Postal 2 for sure had its protests but not near as bad as Manhunt, probably because Rockstar smartly leaned into it as free advertisement.
Manhunt is more about presentation than the violence itself, Mortal Kombat while being significantly more violent presents itself in a fantastical way while the manhunt games feel more gritty and raw
Another thing is your encouragement to be more brutal and the player knowing the fact that he chose a more gruesome execution purposefully to get a better score , In Hitman one can argue for efficiency since Agent 47 knows how exactly to kill someone as fast as possible, but manhunt's executions are slower for sadistic purposes
Manhunt is the only game which made me feel disgusted by its violence and I've played many violent games
I can’t believe they cut the chainsaw in manhunt 2, with how gory it was it would’ve had potential, the chainsaw kills in manhunt 1 we’re too tame
Too tame? What do you expect, a chainsaw up the ass and out the mouth?
@@zxtwist like how they ended starkweather was fantastic, more of stuff like that, more dismembering. Bigbag, is wrapped in binbags, hence the name binbag.
Also fun fact, manhunt was made a 15 minute walk away from me, down the docks. crazy
The PSN version is still being sold on the PS4 store and has been working for me. Tho it takes a bit to get used to.
the way pickups look in manhunt 2 really catch my attention. i'm schizophrenic and they look just like a hallucination
Just realized the stomp at 19:08 is the same default stomp animation from GTA San Andreas
Only way I could see camheads working is if they're just crucified people pegged to a wall with decapitated heads, and cameras in place of the heads. So when the camera's move it looks like someone's turning their head.

The PS2 era was the goriest, most violent era. Long gone are the times, lol. Manhunt, Bully, The Warriors, the Punisher videogame. Mortal Kombat was intense, now the violence is more of a nod and a wink, I feel. Even bad games like the Fight Club game had lots of blood and bone-breaking as a mechanic, lol.
nah. there is plenty of gore and violence these days. try Necromunda or Shadow Warrior (the new ones).
Imagine sneaking up on a camhead... And suddenly the head whips around 180° to look back at you and catch you creepin. Lol

The Cameraheads Creepypasta was found, on a very obscure part of the /x/ archives, it was really, REALLY short. Not at all what people expected.
The vending machine execution was so cool, Rockstrar should've kept that one, a new meaning of Drink Sprunk!
