  • What’s up y’all, welcome back. I just installed this really cool light on the lift gate glass of our 2015 Jeep Wrangler jku it’s super bright, scatters a ton of light and is controlled by a simple on off switch. I’ve also tapped into jeeps “hidden Auxiliary power source”, by tapping into the factory mopar tow package. Thought I’d share this because it seems useful and I know there are a few JK owners here that may have a tow package and need some auxiliary power in the back of there jeep for lights and accessories. On my jeep with a factory tow wiring harness, there’s a red 12v hot wire protected and ran from the battery to the back of the tow connection outlet. That wire is an Extra ran 14g wire that doesn’t get used for towing! Why not use it? And what do you use it for?
    To protect this circuitry i now use 7.5 amp inline fuse
    Remember the longer the wire the less amps it will carry.
    You will need to measure the length wire and fuse the circuit properly
    Example:
    If you extend the 14g wire to 15ft fuse for 7.5 amps maximum
    16 guage wire at 15ft can carry 5 amp = fuse 5 amp
    12 guage wire at 15ft can carry 10amp =fuse 10 amp
    14 guage wire at 15ft can carry 7.5amos = fuse 7.5
    10 guage wire at 15ft can carry 15amps = fuse 15 amp

      Why would you not flip the light around to avoid having to run the wire to the driver’s side?

    Good morning,
    As always an exceptional useful video with thoughtful attention paid to tasks as well as complete parts list. Nothing is left to chance.
    It boggles my mind there is no accessory outlet in the back of our Jeeps that are purpose built for situations where a localized outlet is a must have, lighting as well.
    We have a 50 quart refrigerator located in the back and the closest accessory outlet is located in the center console of hubbies JK. This project is a must have and will be put on the list after the Pentestar rocker/ lifter rebuild.
    As always thank you for taking the time, know it’s appreciated.

    one can never have to many power options in your offroader nice use of oem power source,you might want to use some heatshrink on the connections under the vehicle to protect from corrosion.

      I just seen your email about the Molle pack, glad you like it and can put it to good use! I use heat shrink quite often so it did cross my mind but I really put a lot of tape around the conduit so will see.🤞good suggestion! Thanks for watching buddy I appreciate it 🍻

    You should get a ratcheting crimper like 17$ at harbor freight. I recently got one and crimping in tight spots is a lot easier and goes smoother. Love your videos not many people still just regular camp. Without the tv and string lights.

      I have one I use for terminal ends they do work good. Thanks for watching buddy 🍻

    Good install.
    Only thing I'd add is to use heat shrinks on connections.

    What is the brand name of your wire stripper. Where can I buy one. I’m also interested in the shelf on the rear door. Great video.

    What kit ? Where did the kit come from? So you just cut up your trailer wiring? Doesn't that 12v power source in the harness need to be in the harness to power the trailer accessories?

    I just came across your video, and had a couple of wonder points.1- When you tied into the 12 volt power of the trailer plug, you didn't reconnect the 12 volt wire to the plug side therefor eliminating your accessory power supply to the trailer plug, was there a reason for this? 2- What kind of inverter and size is it that you have that can operate off a 22 gauge wire, without melting the wire or popping the fuse I would like to know so I can look into purchasing one.

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  Рік тому +2

      That’s correct and there’s +12v constant at the trailer connection, that red wire comes directly off the battery and is fused for 25 amps by the factory (mopar harness) 14g wire. I don’t have a trailer that uses accessory power so I left a pig tail not connected and dedicated this wire to my light bar and cigarette socket in the rear.

      So if I wanted to still use that port for a trailer, I would just fuse into the red wire as opposed to cutting it altogether?

    So does the wiring harness still work for towing? I’m just confused because it appears you diverted the power.

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  Рік тому +2

      Yes towing still works, the red hot I tapped off is not used for towing it’s an extra “accessory wire” that mopar adds to there tow package wiring harness. It’s used for trailers that need auxiliary power for charging batteries ect. In my case that wire is not being used so I tapped off it and now use it for a 12v power socket for back of the jeep. It’s an easy way to get power back there and the wire is already protected at the battery. Welcome to the channel 🍻

    Is a factory trailer hitch required meaning the basic wiring is all that is needed?

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  2 роки тому +2

      You would have to have the Chrysler trailer connector and wiring harness that looks like mine to duplicate what I have done, but you could always run a heavy wire from the battery to do this. I just don’t show that in this video. With the way I’ve done this, it still allows for me to connect my trailer lights

    Pro tip, 20 amps with 22ga?

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  10 місяців тому

      I actually brought it down to 10 every circuit would be different as to what your powering. I run the cig socket for refrigerator, the light circuit draws less than 1 amp and 2 amp is the smallest I’ve seen for those fuse types.
