  • A handful of strict carnivores released their blood work and showed lower testosterone levels than you'd expect, especially when you take into account their physiques and output. We asked Robb Wolf if there is a connection to the carnivore diet and/or low carb diets and low test levels. Full episode here: lnk.to/RobbWolf

I've been on the carnivore diet for 10 months now. Granted, I started adding carbs exclusively through raw honey in tea about 5 months in, and I've been consuming that irregularly over the past 5 months.
The reason why I decided to reluctantly add carbs was because while I also experienced high testosterone during the first 2-3 months on the diet, that drastically changed around the 4 month mark. I woke up one day feeling less motivated and having lower mood levels than usual, and my libido, which had previously been high, suddenly became really low. I still had high energy levels at that point, which I assume was due to being in deep Ketosis.
I decided to consult my doctor about a testosterone test, and when I received it, I was surprised to see that my total testosterone was relatively high at 837 ng/dl. I don't remember what my free testosterone was, but my SHBG was much higher than it should be, and Albumin was lower.
If you're not familiar with how these things work, Albumin and SHBG are proteins that transport hormones. Simply put, the difference between them is that SHBG binds tightly to testosterone and doesn't necessarily unbind it effectively, whereas Albumin is not bound as tightly to it and can more conveniently release the hormones around the body. I did a lot of research on my own, and my conclusion was that there was no other way to get around the issue than to add some carbs back into my diet.
I still exclusively consume red meat, and I feel that I still reap the benefits of that, but I cycle in and out of Ketosis. I'd prefer to stay in deep Ketosis, like I used to. My brain seems to function a lot better that way, and I have much more energy throughout the day, but the testosterone issue is a deal breaker for me. If any of you run into the same issue, I'd advice not being so dogmatic about the diet. It is possible that there are solutions to the issue that doesn't involve consuming carbs, but I haven't been able to find any of those solutions. It is also possible that the body might adapt better to being in long-term Ketosis after a year or more, but I'm not willing to see that experiment out. Occasional, low doses of honey before bedtime solved the issue for me, and that's the routine I'll follow until I discover a better way to ensure sustainable hormonal stability.

Another thing I've noticed recently is that, while it seems to be beneficial to add a lot of salt to meals during the start of the carnivore diet, it may be beneficial to decrease the amount of it over time. I tried reducing, and even excluding salt entirely over the past month, month and a half - and it could be a coincidence, but my sleep seems to have improved during the same period of time, and without having done any blood work recently, it feels like my cortisol level is lower than what I'm used to.

@@DillaryHuff I don't blame you for adding carbs. A lot of people have said low carb diets can lower libido. I totally agree with not being so dogmatic about it. I think keeping it mostly meat based and adding non-crap carbs is a good idea. I personally hate ketosis so I try to stay just out of it

Please note everyone, from the experts: carnivore may lower testosterone but it increases androgen receptor sensitivity. This is why, although some numbers may appear low (or very low), they are working much better than if you weren't on the diet. This is what is meant by clinical function. If you're lifting more, more focused, energized, libido, then you are better off hormone-wise on this diet. Testosterone tests are less effective now

in my opinion, it could be because you don't have enough insulin or you eat too much iron. Why? Insulin lowers SHBG which binds to free testisterone, making it unable to function and there is link between high markers of stored iron and high SHBG so low free testosterone.

I'm 59...carnivore-ish (always low carb). My body's Total Test usually comes in between 1200-1300 ng/dl (no TRT...absolutely natural). That said my Free T is only 14 ng/dl , which isn't necessarily optimal given my Total T levels. I'm assuming my SHBG is relatively high (need to test) given my low carb diet. That said I have always had more lean muscle mass than the average bear, so I wonder if in certain circumstances high Free T levels aren't necessary to build muscle, have a decent libido, etc...
