- My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of the 1979 NFC Div Playoff between the Eagles and Buccaneers. I ran the game through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, then used Da Vinci Resolve to adjust a very dark picture and pretty drab color. Game is still on the dark side, especially in the second half, but I didn't want to push the lighting and color too much where it looked unnatural.

Looks awesome. Thanks for all hard work.
Thanks so much for the work u put in,back when it was football and u could still tackle people, flag football now,it's a business no longer a sport
Not bad
I ❤them!
You did a great job!! Looks good
I know this isn't a popular opinion, but I love those Bucs jerseys. 😁
Me too !!
So do I
There’s many Bucs fans like myself that wish these were the primary ones 👍🏼
I’m not even a Bucs fan & I wish TB went back to this jersey & helmet.
I happen to be a Bucs fan and I’d probably get tired of the creamsicles if they went back permanently. The original red and pewter has held up really well over time. But seeing these once a year or so is great.
I was 14 in 1979; I ate, slept, and drank NFL football. Man...I missed those days!
When football was football! 👍
Me too...I was a bit older but the NFL doesn't hold a candle these days. I remember devouring Sports Illustrated the minute it hit my mailbox back then.
U old now lol …
Great era.
Me 2!!! I watched both games on Sundays, MNF, and just about any other game broadcast. When my team wasn't on local TV, I watched the game that was on TV sometimes just to keep up with the scoring updates even when it was a blow-out!
Creamsicle jerseys 4 life. I never get tired of these enhanced games. This is my offseason tradition now!
I was 17 at the time. Remember getting to Al Lopez park at 6 in the morning to tailgate. I think it was called Horizon park back in the day. 61 now. Good times.
From a winless pee-wee team in 1976-1977 to a powerhouse in 1979. What a turnaround for the Bucs!
HANK STRAM was such a fantastic commentator.
Genius
His toupe was a joke....
@patgalvez4563 oh come on u can do better than that
so you liked his toupe?@@eternal1blue
Jayne Kennedy 😙💘
O yes how gorgeous
She was on Different Strokes for one episode and 7 year old me fell in puppy love.
Very nice addition to your collection......there are a number of games (regular season and playoffs that would look great "enhanced" with your methods. Thanks for these gems....
Amazing job Dave. I literally watched this game about 2 weeks ago. WHAT A HUGE difference. What a game Ricky Bell had. So sad we lost him so soon.
I figuratively watched it !
This is fantastic. I've dreamt of being able to watch all these classic games the way it would have looked on my T.V back in 79 when I was 7.
You're the same age as me then :) Born in '72
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673Awesome. Our favorite era is probably similar then. I love NFL from 1977 to 1986
Oh man, Jayne Kennedy!! I had a thing for her when I was a kid. I love watching these old games with the old school CBS pregame shows
So much better than the talking Barbie dolls we have today. I think the NFL grows them in a test tube.
Those creamsicle Bucs’ jerseys were fire, my fav TB jerseys.
Impressive. As a collector, I remember this game video being a not so good copy of a copy of a copy that was circulating for many years. It looks great here.
Awesome game, love those old Bucs uniforms! I remember seeing this game on TV back in the day. Great memories. A lot of these players and coaches are long ago retired and many now passed. Even the old Tampa Stadium is long gone. Time sure does fly, especially the older you get. Thanks for posting!
many years ago i bought a vhs tape of this game on ebay for 20 bucks. Wasn't even watchable. This is awesome. thank you !!
Bucs diehard lifelong fan here in Vancouver Canada. The good ole days! Loved this time and era growing up as a teenage boy here in Vancouver and attending a football powerhouse high school(Notre Dame Senior Secondary) here in East Vancouver. Lee Roy Selmon was my idol and I actually got to personally meet him in Tampa in 2005 while vacationing there.
Jayne Kennedy. I'm a teenager all over again. WOW!
truly miss these days, this is football not the garbage it’s now devolved into
Brings back memories. Watching football on Sunday afternoons @ Mom cooking noon dinner!!
Was hoping for this one! Shine on "Florida Orange" Buccaneers. 1979 was a special year. Wish I still fit in my Rickey Bell jersey.
Yes the creamsicle unis!!
Doug Williams was a great quarterback. At the time he was the only black starting quarterback. He could've been with the tampa bay organization for years had they paid him the money he deserved and probably wouldve won a couple super bowls with him. He later went on to become the first black qb to start and win a super bowl. He was truly a pioneer
Thanks for the history lesson. Doug Williams was far from great 😂
@@dang75790 He's in the history books! Deal with it!
@@juaquinjames2459 if you have low standards? I guess so lol
@@dang75790 He was the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL for 15 minutes.
@dskyyksd lol you got that right. Then neverheard from him again lol
This was the biggest victory in franchise history up to this point. I loved those uniforms. I went to the '79 NFL championship. It wasn't meant to be, 9-0 loss.
I was at this game...20 years old. We lost in the NFC Championship the next week but we left this game happy.
I call this the Ricky Bell game. He was unstoppable carrying the ball 37 times. John McKay didn't believe the ball would be too heavy for him.🏈
I just love that first drive for Tampa Bay - 18 plays! That is BALL CONTROL right there.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 I'm watching the game now. It set the tone for the game. The Bucs had an extra week to prepare for this game. I believe that also played a factor.
His #42 jersey fit his style just like Riggins #44
It was heartbreaking that in just a few years after this game, that Bell was afflicted with dermatomyositis and polymyositis, which contributed to his cardiac arrest and passing away in 1984.
The ‘79 Bucs were such a Jekyll and Hyde team. They started 5-0. Finished 10-6. Won this exciting game then a week later played in one of the most memorable boring NFC championship games ever.
They really fell flat a week later once Doug Williams got injured. It sucks Culverhouse was so greedy and careless letting him go. He blew a chance at a ring.
This is one channel on UA-cam in which the comments are as priceless as the game videos. Thank You Dave!
Curt Gowdy doing CBS? Never knew that.
I know right?
NBC moved on from Curt Gowdy after the 1978 season. They looked at Dick Enberg as his successor as the voice of NBC sports
i was six years old in a philly suburb of levittown.
i remember the old man next door neighbor was pissed off over this game. He couldn't believe they lost to an 'expansion team"
Thanks for another very nice restoration- appreciate the pre-game features, thought CBS & NFL Films were very good at production in late 70's
Every sports event sounds much better when Curt Gowdy is announcing.
Both the video and audio on this is incredible. Nice work, and thanks for posting this! ✌🏻
Thanks so much for sharing this. I was at this game and it is one of the most memorable days of my childhood.
What a great trip down memory lane, it's really too bad the Bucs were completely shut down by the Rams the following week ending their dream season. And I'd be remiss not to mention that watching this reminded me again of just how incredibly beautiful Jayne Kennedy was back then too!
Jane Kennedy was AMAZING!!! LOL
She was very beautiful
Nah it wasn't too bad. I loved it! One of our classic games to finally make it to the SB.
Remember this game like yesterday. it was broadcasted on a Saturday afternoon. Rickey Bell ran wild. Very big upset win over Philadelphia.
Stupid observation but I love seeing Dick Vermeil wearing a white undershirt under his unbuttoned, collared, t-shirt. My dad use to always wear a white undershirt under his Munsingwear t-shirts. It was a classic look for the time.
Thank you for these videos - love them. John McKay was hilarious too.
NFL head coaches were personalities back then, before the pro game starched all color out of the coaching staffs of the respective teams.
Good timing, Dave!
Dave,
Another masterpiece. Love that NFL Today is at the start. Best pregame intro to any Pregame show in any sport. Brent and the crew at Tampa Stadium was great. Fortunately the legend Curt Gowdy was doing the call. Helluva game, and fabulous enhancement. It is great to see games from the NFL's greatest decade.
After a very rough franchise start, the Bucs got (temporarily) good in a hurry in '79. Bell was a good runner.
The old Ford commercials were the best... Hahahahahahaha!!! My first car was my moms old 1977 Ford Granada... LOL
IMO, the Eagles uniforms of the late 1970s were their best version. They always looked like they were see-through tear-away style jerseys for some reason.
Ricky Bell could've been Great 👍🏼.!! RIP RICKY UR NOT FORGOTTEN
Coach Vermeil didn't do much to get the ball to Harold Carmichael. So many drops by the Eagles WRs. I was seriously wondering why the Eagles didn't use the shotgun formation to get Jaws more time to get rid of the ball. Then I remembered that this was 1979 and not 2023😂
Tom Landry popularized the shotgun. Back then it wasn’t widely used.
It’s impressing how articulate all the athletes are in the opening interviews.
These guys are professors compared to today’s athletes.
What happened?
notice how opposing players used to help each other upoff the ground after a play```
dont see that anymore- rarely
Wow. Great observation. I thought I was the only one noticing that watching games these days.
1:21:49 Jimmie Giles and the Bucs got screwed out of a touchdown. I don't see where he juggled the ball.🤔🏈
Thanks for memories
Is it just me or is the pregame show so much better than what we have today some 44 years later.
It was more substance and less spectacle back then. Having fewer opinionated talking heads back then also made the pre-game more palatable than nowadays.
I don't know about anyone else but I loved the old Converse "star and chevron" cleats many players wore in 1979, with the tongue flap on the outside of the laces.
A huge missed opportunity for the Eagles considering what happened on Sunday in the other NFC game
Moreso for Tampa Bay, considering they'd go from being one game from the Super Bowl to completely capsizing the following year, going 5-10-1; their defense going from #1 in the league in 1979 to 20th in '80 was a big part of that. Their story kind of mirrors the Bears from the same period: 1979 looked like the first step on the path to greater things, but it actually turned out to be the highwater mark for several years to come, though there was no way to know that at the time.
Big time. Eagles Rams was a toss up.
@@willmuny9201 When looked at closer, Tampa's '81 and '82 seasons weren't nearly the successes that '79 was: '81 they went 9-7, won a weak NFC Central division, then got crushed by Dallas in their first playoff game; '82 the strike year a record of 5-4 was good enough for a WC berth, where they again got crushed by Dallas in their first playoff game. That would be the Bucs last playoff appearance until 1997.
It’s refreshing to watch a game with not a single text or graphics on the screen.
DEFINITELY. Keep it simple!
You hit the nail on the head.
Wish I could see the score
FOX ruined NFL broadcasts.
Strange that CBS with Brent did a talk-up about the Pittsburgh/Denver playoff game from the year before, as that game was televised on NBC.
Am I goin crazy or are the highlights of the other division round playoff games at beginning of this from the 78 season while this game is from the 79 season? Philly had already lost to Atlanta and Bucs were not in those playoffs. ...this is the best thing on youtube either way :)
2:51 - "Jayne, do you remember the playoffs A YEAR AGO?"
LOL so I WAS goin crazy! thanks @@Rick-nr7sp
Great game but I love the old commercials!
Wow…just one year before, Curt Gowdy was announcing SB XIII on NBC…where he was their number one broadcaster for 13 seasons…so strange to see him on CBS
@0:38 Great intro. with many shots from NFL Films. I did a double-take when I saw 83 in Bears unofrom, as Willie Gault was in the 83 or 84 draft? Looked it up and 83 was Golden Richards--wow!
Excellent job. You can see every detail of Hank Stram's fake hair.
LMAO
if he heard you say that, he'd have Buck Buchannon sack you
@@timfremstad3434 And I would have done more than matriculated down the field.
Hey Dave. I really appreciate the hard work you do to bring these old games back alive. I was only 9 years old when this game was played but it brings me right back to that special time. I was wondering if you have any games from 1971?
Thanks :) I have a couple 1971 Monday Night Football games in my queue to hopefully work on at some point.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673awesome to hear, do you also have any Bills games with OJ? Specifically from 73-75? Thank you once again Dave, I really love just sitting and going back in time watching these games.
I actually don't have any Bills game at all to work with at the moment.
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 oh that’s sad. I’m a giants fan but they really stunk in the 70s, but I’d still like to see some from that era also. If you do come across any Bills games from those years I’d be absolutely thrilled, always wanted to really watch OJ run the ball because I don’t have any memory of him doing so on TV. Appreciate it anyway.
The automobile commercials in this video where fuel mileage was emphasized . . . I recall that time in 1979 when gasoline prices in the US reached the one-dollar mark per gallon. It was also the time when a mini-fuel shortage was happening in parts of the US.
I remember watching this game with my dad when I was 11 years old. I was very angry that the Eagles lost.
Watched the game on TV live. Devasted my Eagles lost that day...
Thanks for this stuff Dave. I have like 5000 old football NFL and College Games and now I am thinking about getting Topaz to clean them up. I have been using just the fine tune and enhance on games. It makes them look OK but do do you have to run denoise as well as Fine Tune and Enhance? The Davinci is way above my skillset as well but trying to learn.
I pretty much set Topaz to Auto for the most part. I upscale about 225-230% to 1080p and double the framerate to 59.94
Don't remember Curt Gowdy working for C.B.S ,do remember this game though, and the 9- 0 buc, rams championship the following week
Looking at these old games, the commercials, the intro to the game is so iconic. The way they commentate now with the exception of a few these days is sickening, the overload of drug commercials or useless insurance ads, or trashy car shield water down games, the fake celebration after every play is maddening.
As dumb as it sounds, I miss the old beer commercials with Dick Butkus, Bubba Smith, et.al.
I miss those days 1980 PLATOFFS WOW
Interesting that Curt Gowdy the season prior was at NBC and announcing the Super Bowl XIII and moves to CBS to the second team
Somehow the connection of Curt Gowdy with CBS just doesn't resonate right.
@@bloqk16 he was at the end of his career
The Eagles and Bucs rivalry will never die...FIRE THE CANNONS
Great music
Celia Perez looks gooood
It's all about Jayne Kennedy! Was there something about a game?
Nice rug, Hank.
This Tampa Bay offense was so basic yet the Eagles had no snswers whatsoever
Incredible 18-play first series.
What in the “Eva Mendez but my last name is Perez” then Jane…🥵the jerseys weren’t the only things pretty back then plus the guest Philly player getting dissed for a handshake from her😂💯
❤
I love Bob Newhart calling the game, just wished he’d do his bomb disposal routine.
I saw this game I was 14
Jimmy "The Greek " was great.
Thanks Dave can you someday put out the rebroadcast from the same year the week before the 1979 NFC Wildcard Playoff Game the Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia Eagles which is the game that the Bears were robbed & jobbed because of poor officiating as the Bears really had them blown out but the officials made several terrible calls including a Walter Payton beautiful 85 yard Rembrandt that was called back because of a phathom illegal motion call on WR Brian Bashnagel but when you look at the play he did not move forward until after the ball was snapped, horrible , horrible call as it cost the Bears a playoff win
I have that game in my queue to work on at some point, along with about 90 other games at the moment :)
@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Cool 😎 man at your convenience
Did you add music to the highlight clips during the NFL Today or are they on the original broadcast?
That music is part of the original broadcast.
Sweet...!
Great days
43:10 The world was changing drastically and we didn't even know it.
1:03. LOL I forgot about that gem
Thank you for posting this game I really love those old Tampa Bay uniforms
The 1970s were awesome on Sundays. Except when I had a math test the next morning.
To this day, I thought the Eagles had the better team.I had a huge crush on Jayne Kennedy.
Celia- perez.... mamacita
Oh my goodness Jane Kennedy is so beautiful ❤️
Its crazy to think but the Bucs and Eagles have met 6 times in the Playoffs, there have only been 8 other matchups with more meetings in the Super Bowl era. Bucs lead 4-2.
These interviews are cool ,hey hey TAMPA BAY 😂.....
Im so delusional that when i watch theseI feel like i wouldve been a star back then
The great curt gowdy!
The knock on Doug Williams was that he threw the ball too hard. Granted, there was times where he needed to put some touch on the ball and he would fire a bullet. The ball spent less time in the air, so that was a good thing. And the other good part was he threw the ball so hard that the DB’s couldn’t intercept it, either. However, despite their excuses, Jimmy Giles could catch his passes. And like John McKay said, the receivers could catch his throws in college, so why couldn’t the pros?
Heartbreaking that they mention SD in the playoffs. Great years except Fouts being awful in the playoffs in 79-80. Cool seeing TB first playoff run.
The commercials when we still made products in America . Not anymore !
Doug was hof calibur
I wonder what an Eagles/Rams NFCCG would have looked like.
There is no prettier woman in human history than Jayne Kennedy on CBS in the late 1970's.
