  • My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the DVD files used for this project. I've enhanced the broadcast recording of the 1979 NFC Div Playoff between the Eagles and Buccaneers. I ran the game through Topaz to upscale, denoise, sharpen and double the framerate, then used Da Vinci Resolve to adjust a very dark picture and pretty drab color. Game is still on the dark side, especially in the second half, but I didn't want to push the lighting and color too much where it looked unnatural.

Moreso for Tampa Bay, considering they'd go from being one game from the Super Bowl to completely capsizing the following year, going 5-10-1; their defense going from #1 in the league in 1979 to 20th in '80 was a big part of that. Their story kind of mirrors the Bears from the same period: 1979 looked like the first step on the path to greater things, but it actually turned out to be the highwater mark for several years to come, though there was no way to know that at the time.

Thanks Dave can you someday put out the rebroadcast from the same year the week before the 1979 NFC Wildcard Playoff Game the Chicago Bears @ Philadelphia Eagles which is the game that the Bears were robbed & jobbed because of poor officiating as the Bears really had them blown out but the officials made several terrible calls including a Walter Payton beautiful 85 yard Rembrandt that was called back because of a phathom illegal motion call on WR Brian Bashnagel but when you look at the play he did not move forward until after the ball was snapped, horrible , horrible call as it cost the Bears a playoff win

The knock on Doug Williams was that he threw the ball too hard. Granted, there was times where he needed to put some touch on the ball and he would fire a bullet. The ball spent less time in the air, so that was a good thing. And the other good part was he threw the ball so hard that the DB’s couldn’t intercept it, either. However, despite their excuses, Jimmy Giles could catch his passes. And like John McKay said, the receivers could catch his throws in college, so why couldn’t the pros?
