I spent over an hour trying to program this POS, and all I wanted to do was reset it to run manually. Living in Florida I don’t use the heat, just the AC. I want it 72° all the time. I don’t keep a routine schedule - just keep the damn house 72°. Why does that have to be so difficult?
Man oh man, you could not explain that more clearer, I am a senior who can not understand these things, however when you explained how to program and set time, I felt so intelligent because everything you explained I was able to do and get it right the first time. Thank you so much we are now nice and warm. Thanks
This was a great help as my husband pressed a wrong button and we couldn't figure how how to fix the thermostat. We just followed your instructions and got it back to where it was set. Thanks again
I've had to deal with a few different types of thermostats in the course of maintenance. I tell people to go by a plain old thermostat with a heat and cool button, and a simple thermostat adjustment. Then you set it at the temperature you want, and walk away from it. Seems to work better than all the hoops these companies want the customers to jump thru.
The fact that this video has almost 800k views is a testament to what an absolute piece of garbage this thermostat is. I've bought a separate thermometer just to test the accuracy of the temperature it displays on the left, and it's consistently off by almost 15 degrees. I'll come home from work, set the temperature to cool at 66 degrees and make sure that the hold button is engaged. I'll come back 30 minutes later sweating, finding that it's magically readjusted itself up to 87 degrees, still says it's on hold. WTF? The program feature isn't necessary at all, and is extremely nonintuitive. Any landlords considering buying this for their apartments due to its undoubtedly cheap cost should strongly reconsider. You get what you pay for, and you'll have a lot of very unhappy tenants.
Absolutely right!!! Ours consistently does the magical jump in temperature despite "hold" setting. The manual we received, only covers the non-programmable. No explanation for the buttons what so ever.
Thank You! moved to an apartment and had this thermostat, I did not undertood it so I had to manually do it all the time. was there like 10 days without me programming it because it takes time and was confusing. now I took the time and rewatch your video and I was able to do it! It wasn't hard.
Thanks sooooo much for this!! We have the same thermostat and after the power went off the house became unbelievably hot and we thought it was because of our AC. Turns out we were just stupid and didn't notice the thermostat had reset :/
This video helped me to reset my 1F78 model. However, my model has none of the 4 small buttons, no setting timers, not even a Clock! LOL So anyway, instead of having to hold the 3 buttons shown in this video, I held the 2 buttons for temperature up and down, and it reset! Thank you and your team, Aaron, from Service Champions Heating & Air Conditioning
Funny reading all the posts about people having trouble with this basic thermostat. Just moved into new house, no manuals for anything of course, but thermostat use and programming is a no brainer. What I came to this video for was to see about changing it from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
Man alive, you have GOT to tell us how to turn off "Hold". Resetting programs makes sense: Hold down Time and Up/Down and the same time to reset PROGRAMS - but so far, nothing has shown how to undo/reset/turn off "Hold". I am crying. Well, not really, but this does suck. Husband touched every button because he thought the thermostat didn't work. It did. Now I'm here in the comments, and he's making me a grilled cheese. I have programmed our thermostat to have a desired temp, since our Hold is set to 85 - 85!! At least I got a grilled cheese and you all got a story. (I'll post a reply with the "Hold" answer if our maintenance dude helps us out.)
I hope "hold" works. I'v been trying to lower the temperature for days. What the heck was wrong with manual dial types that stayed at the temperature i set them at ?
I might be going a bit crazy, but I wanted the heater to shut off at 11pm and then automatically turn on at 6am. So, I programmed it by setting the temp very low at 11pm (60 degrees) and then up to 78 at 6am. Well, I found the thermostat was turning the heat on about an hour early. I was very perplexed. Then, I thought perhaps the time is the “desired” temperature at THAT time. So, I did this. I set the temp to be 78 at 6am and then before that I put another set point of 60 at 5:45 am. This seems to work. Odd since I would have thought the time mean exactly when it should turn on.
For anyone who is stuck and cannot turn off their hvac system, what you need to do is turn the thermostat to auto fan and cool, then you set the temp one or two degrees below the temp that is displayed on the screen and that should turn it off within a couple of minutes.
Addison Dewitt - Great question. White Rodgers 1F78 thermostat is a programmable only type of thermostat. You can not remove the programming on it but you can use the HOLD button to override the programming.
A couple of notes. Make sure you are using batteries with plenty of juice. I changed batteries and thought they were fine as there were still numbers lit up on the display and the AC could be turned on, just not controlled by programming or using the buttons to raise or lower the temp. Also, to reset mine I needed to remove the left battery, turn on the fan and heat and let it sit for about 2 minutes. Then the numbers magically fade away, and it was ready to be reset (common sense right?). Anyway then you stick the fresh batteries in and the up/down temperature control works. The HOLD light is stuck at always visible, but it seems to be overuled by the cold/heat and temperature controls, so I guess that doesn't matter. A new one is supposedly on the way, but these instructions worked for a quick fix - Good Luck.
I just found your post from 4 years ago so thank you thank you thank you! It worked for my A/C unit in this heat wave. Guess this old one is about worn out so I'll order a replacement too. Thanks again!

I rather control temp myself. Go to work set it up on 78, come back at 6PM from work bring it down to 74, ready to go to bed lower to 72, plain and simple...

Hello hippypancake, On this thermostat there is a few ways to accomplish this. The first way is to set the temperature at your desired number and press the HOLD button. It will stay at this number until you change it. The second way to do it is by setting the program to your desired numbers and times. Here is a link to the White Rodgers 1F-78 operating manual: servicechampions.com/wp-content/uploads/White-Rodgers-F78.pdf

Hello I set it my AC on 71 but after few minutes the set point change by it self to 85..come again and change the set point 71 but later again set point change to 85. You know what are the problem?
I have an if78-151. When I put the fan in manual mode (on) the fan does not run continuously, it sometimes comes on for say 15 minutes and then stops and may come on again in another while. Should the fan not operate continuously in manual mode even with the other button in the off position??
We've lived in this house for four years and never had a set program until today when it inexplicably forced us to set one. It was always completely manually operated. For four years the unit display never alternated between time and temp, it only showed the temp. Service Champions says this is impossible but clearly it's not, because several people here have commented likewise. I'd just like to know how to get it back to our original state of manual operation.
That is also exactly what happened to mine. The batteries died, so we replaced them. That made the thermostat work again, but now the time/temperature alternate (Never did that before this, in all these years.) and the back light is off. It used to turn the display back light on when we adjusted the temp, so we could easily see what we were changing it to and what the temp currently was. Now it is dark no matter what we do.
+My channel The bulb is built into the thermostat and is not serviceable. You can try to remove the batteries but if that does not work the bulb is bad.
The batteries had died, so we replaced them. Now the display back light won't turn on when I press buttons. I tried to use the configuration menu, but pressing RUN, then pressing the RUN and PROG buttons at the same time, brings up OHI 69 on the display. Pressing HOLD does not allow navigation to the next item on the menu. Pressing TIME does not navigate backward. Actually, at that point, none of the buttons will change anything on the display, except the UP and DOWN buttons, which will change the OHI69 to LO 62 and other things I have no idea about. The only thing I can do at that point is press the RUN button to exit the menu. I'm pretty frustrated.
Found the answer. I'll post it here, in case anybody else is looking for the same solution: "The display should then alternate between "d-L" and "OFF" . Press the up or down arrow button to change from "OFF" to "ON". Then press the RUN button to set it. "
1. Does it have separate programming for the heating/cooling? 2.. If you just want to turn the heat up a degree for that moment can you just turn up one degree and then it goes back to the programmed temp?
Mine doesn't work anymore. I changed the batteries and that didn't do anything. It says I have it set for 62 degrees and that it's 71 degrees in the house, but I think it's just the opposite. It's said the exact same thing for days now. And the time of day isn't there anymore. Wtf?
I have an older model. The batteries won't come out, tabs don't move or I haven't the strength to move them. This video does not show how to do any of this. It only tells you to do this. Can you help?
you said you were going to show me how to change the batteries ... and you didn't ... i've been told you should turn the thermostat off when you change the batterres? when you change them, do you have to reprogram? it would have helped if you had done it ...
Batteries died on mine and when I replaced the batteries, the screen is only half-readbale. Everything else works. Is the screen bad? Does that happen? I did replace with brand new expensive batteries.
hey how about showing how to cancel a program.....my system is stuck in some program , how do I clear it...I do not want any program just manual adjusting.
Word of advice, never get this thermostat. Not only is the display a pain to read and impossible to program correctly the buttons don't work. Constantly have to press buttons multiple times to get inputs to register.
Why would it randomly go "off program" everyday at exactly 6:35pm. When it does, & I press "Run" is suddenly starts following the pre-set program again. But, it shouldn't stop following the program in the 1st place. Any ideas? I've reset & reprogrammed it to no avail. Same behavior.
Why if I have it set to 76 (cool mode) it's 85 in my house?? like it never reaches the temp. I have it set at and it's been running all day!!! I'm hott!!!
Hello Esther. This is a common service call we receive all the time. It seems that the air in your home is not being properly conditioned. There are many variables why your home is not reaching your desired temperature. Ultimately you will need to call a local HVAC contractor to come out to your home for service. If you are in Southern California, we can be of service. Before you call you contractor, here are a few things you should let him/her know. Does air come out of your vents? if so, is it cool or warm air? Does a lot of air come out of your vents or just a small amount? is your outdoor unit, condenser, running? These are a few items your hvac contractor would look for and troubleshoot. Aside from the connection between your thermostat and your central air system. Begin your search for a hvac contractor that has great 3rd party reviews.
Hello Trudy, if you have set the desired temperature to be higher than what is displayed on the thermostat room temperature reading and your system is operational, then you should contact a local HVAC contractor to see why your furnace is not heating your air. If you live in Southern California, please call us to schedule an appoint if we service the city you live in: 714-777-7777.
How do I reset back to factory settings with no programed times still in it? Just run with no schedule. I do adjustments the schedule neevr runs correctly
how DELITE TIME from display(programing). Many years I adjust temperature myself by buttons #1 and #2 .A/S in my building was shut off, then ON, I cannot adjust on display came in program in hours
Do you know why not all of the numbers would be showing on the screen of this thermostat? I have it turned on & I had the batteries in it changed so I know that these are not the problem.
To get it to manual. You hold up and down and Time at the same time. It will reset it.

Hello I set it my AC on 71 but after few minutes the set point change by it self to 85..come again and change the set point 71 but later again set point change to 85. You know what are the problem?
It's been programmed. Press up/down/time at the same time for a reset.
I have an if78-151. When I put the fan in manual mode (on) the fan does not run continuously, it sometimes comes on for say 15 minutes and then stops and may come on again in another while. Should the fan not operate continuously in manual mode even with the other button in the off position??
Very informative! Thanks for sharing this very helpful information
How to change to Celsius?
Thank you!! Could not for the life of me figure this out!!
How do you eliminate the hold feature on this thermostat, it shows current temperature at 69°, actual temperature is 64° Dash need help
Same question
room temperature 72, set it to “heat” “hold” “84”, hear a clip sound, a small flame sign shows up, but nothing happen after hours. confusing
Clear and well paced presentation thank you.
Thank you this helped but my Cool icon is flashing on my thermostat. Please help it’s not so hot in my apartment
We've lived in this house for four years and never had a set program until today when it inexplicably forced us to set one. It was always completely manually operated. For four years the unit display never alternated between time and temp, it only showed the temp.
Service Champions says this is impossible but clearly it's not, because several people here have commented likewise. I'd just like to know how to get it back to our original state of manual operation.
that is exactly what happened to us. Very frustrating !!!
Thank you for this information. Now I understand how to use it.
Thank you for the video. I just changed the batteries and the thermostat came alive but the furnace doesn't start. Please help.
Hello I noticed my screen is dark and doesn't laminate at night, is there a bulb in the back panel?
+My channel The bulb is built into the thermostat and is not serviceable. You can try to remove the batteries but if that does not work the bulb is bad.
white rogers is the most confusing ive ever had to program.
Wtf?
Venstar thermostats are probably the easiest to use and program. but i think they only sell them at US Air supply parts stores. love them!
I have an older model. The batteries won't come out, tabs don't move or I haven't the strength to move them. This video does not show how to do any of this. It only tells you to do this. Can you help?
Hello, how can I reset the program times to not turn on at all, I just want to do it manually. I don't want the heat to kick in different times.
+Jennifer Bermudez Hello Jennifer,
Press the hold button to keep the thermostat setting fixed.
How do you delete programs?
you said you were going to show me how to change the batteries ... and you didn't ... i've been told you should turn the thermostat off when you change the batterres? when you change them, do you have to reprogram? it would have helped if you had done it ...
Addison Dewitt yesssss
julian hampton ☺️
Just use the Hold button and it stays there till you change it, ignoring program mode
Addison Dewitt yes! I have the same problem. Previous owner has some crazy settings. How do I remove them? I hope they add the video!
zalllon actually it doesn’t. Ours changes all the time and we can’t figure out how to reset the damn thing. I’m about to go buy another thermostat
Word of advice, never get this thermostat. Not only is the display a pain to read and impossible to program correctly the buttons don't work. Constantly have to press buttons multiple times to get inputs to register.
Yeah, I noticed that
I am an HVAC tech and I replace so many of these! If you want a better one go with the Honeywell 5000
This was wonderful, so helpful. Thank you!
+Julie Adams Thank you Julie for taking the time to comment.
Ohhhh may be I confused, I did but not work, eg if it start 6 am to 9am is it time interval and run for 3 hrs
Thanks, this video is very helpful
If you figured it out, can you tell me how to make COOL AIR
Thank u very much

AWESOMELY Helpful....Thanx a million!
how DELITE TIME from display(programing). Many years I adjust temperature myself by buttons #1 and #2 .A/S in my building was shut off, then ON, I cannot adjust on display came in program in hours
A backlight would help see the display. I have to use a flashlight to see the display
I have a question if the temperature is not meeting set point and the filter saying is on the screen what does that mean?? Please help
Do you know why not all of the numbers would be showing on the screen of this thermostat? I have it turned on & I had the batteries in it changed so I know that these are not the problem.
