I believed Isamu's Reason had an underlying inner conflict that Isamu had with himself and the people around him. For Isamu, in the very beginning, you see he was belittled in a way by Chiaki behind his back. Chiaki thinks all he does is simping for their teacher and acting like a douche. But in reality, Isamu is this very intelligent, young man who just needs people that can be supportive of him and be with him in times of need. Isamu literally was able to get into the Mantra HQ and find out information about the Maiden. While he got captured in Kabukichou, he was able to figure out how the Amala Network works and find the Temple that stores a massive amount of Magatsuhi all by himself. While this resulted in him forming his Reason, it shows that he isn't this incapable or unreliable dude who just has a thing or two for his teacher.
Nocturne’s characters were a product of their time. This was a deep story that sent me down a lot of rabbit holes online at the time. Putting in that time was part of it.
While I agree there's something to be said about these characters arcs making more sense if you really thoroughly analyze them as characters while playing the game, as the leaders of their own Reasons, it's their responsibility to represent the ideals behind their new universes. Players are meant to sympathize with their situations and decide on a Reason through how each character portrays it. If they don't do a good job communicating their arcs to the average player, than it makes choosing a route significantly harder. I remember on my first playthrough, I had such a hard time understanding why each character decided on their Reason and where their motivations came from that I just went for TDE without giving it much thought.
I went for tde "first" after the default "no reason" ending where kagutsuchi just scolds you then game over, because it had the most content. I think on the second playthrough (or third) I went tde again because the other endings are lame.
I doubt their character arc and personality were meant to be the reason to choose their aligment, to me the game took an aproximation similar to seeing someone you knew years ago and now you see what they became, so the selling point it's not the character but their ideas, closer to chosing a politician rather than chosing betwen two friends.
Honestly I gotta give respect to Isamu that dude basically mastered the Amala network diving in face first yet surpassed Hijiri in a fraction of the time Hijiri worked on it. He also didn't need insane prep time like Hikawa or a freebie like Chiaki to transform into a partial demon he just took some Amala ghosts into himself.
I can say the SMT V characters are shallow, even non-existent to a degree. I cannot say the same thing to Nocturne characters, especially Isamu. I see so much depth in both Chiaki and Isamu (especially Isamu) that I see myself playing the game many times to see what kind of world is built from the respective Reasons.
this video was really good and gave me a lot to think about. Normally im a little dismissive of nocturne's characters but I'm glad you gave me something to think about! Nocturne's really cool and yeah it's unfortunate a lot of people won't analyze these characters. I love the older megaten games and it makes me happy to see someone notice important details I'll subscribe and i hope to see more cool content from you soon! 🙂
I love the characters in nocturne just wish all the reasons were a bit more in-depth so we can see what their world would be like kinda like in smt 4 I felt like all the characters were kinda just assholes even though I liked them
I think most , myself included, people issues with Nocturne's character isn't that they lack depth but mostly because it''s hard get a graps on them when you barely interract with them and the game feels like ''lacks a A B C''. We see Chiaki and Isamu react to the world, then next time we met them Chiaki already has her motivation clear and Isamu already went nuts. We never saw them reach such state. It feels , to me in this , that there's a connection missing between point A and C. There's no point B where we see them struggling or slowly question themselves ''Maybe this is how i should change this world because of this X and that''. That would make easier to us, the player to graps why they reach such point. I like to use Yamato's from Devil survivor 2 as a example because his ideal is similar to Chiaki but i honestly understand him much better because Yamato actually says how he feels like the world doesn't deserve his sacrifice /his family sacrifice because how people are lazy, don't have a will to be better, etc and how he just want to humanity to be better, to grow , to be worth sacrifing. To me , that explains everything that needs to said about him and i completly understand why he goes nuts later in the game. Of course depends on what you do he becomes ''better as person'' but if you follow any path that isn't the true path or even follow his path , he goes down/on with his flawed beliefs just like Chiaki goes down with her. Like you said Nocturne's writting is subtle but sometimes i wonder if the game is actually subtle or simply lacking, and maybe people just read too much into it and make some stretches or simply people with certain experiences are able to connect those characters and events to other experiences and that's why they see how ''deep'' those characters are while other don't..
The main thing of the reason characters is that they are hypocrites, with two of them having the excuse of being driven to it out of desperation and the third who's just an idiot Savant Chiaki attempts to build a world of the strong, despite having spent the whole game hiding, sneaking and skulking, and the only time they act brave, they get their arm cut off. They are not strong. The world they are attempting to build is one in which they would not survive Isamu attempt to build a world of solitude, despite only getting anywhere by relying on others. Dude's transformed state literally has multiple faces all over his body from absorbing the wandering souls of Amala into his body. If this game had been made today, dudes pronouns would have changed he to they right there. Throw in that he probably got gaslight into his view by the wandering spirits whispering to him in his cell from the drum, dudes not even going with own idea Then theres Hikawa, he's the least hypocritical and more just odd. Dude spends his whole lifes working for this one moment, fucking over everyone else to get to his goals, pouring his mabition and drive... into making a world without passion or drive. Honestly, the only reason he's able to push his plan through so much is because of all the demons that side with him and the reason the demons are siding with him? Cause a world he wants to make would fuck over god, as it would be a world without prayer or worship, starving YHWH of praise and making the humans of that world easy pray for the demons. The only demon that doesn't fit this mold is Mada, a god of Drunkeness and parties. Then again, he's drunk so maybe he doesn't get it either. Hikawa is just egtting gaslighted into following his every edgy nihilist desire by demons who stand to profit from the end result The only ones not being dumbasses are the Manikins, who just want a world that won't shit on then... which they could probably get by siding with Aradia, Lucy who is just being himself, Takao who's plan will let the vortex world reroll their bad hand of reasons and start fresh and Hijiri, who honestly deserves his revenge after all the bullshit YHWH has put him through since SMT2

You seem to be prime bro material.
