  • Todays Ford Model A question of the day came from Shelby!
She wants to know if the Model A needs any special fuel additives like lead to make today’s gas okay for running the A’s engine?
‪@ModelA‬ gives the answers, an example and here’s a recent video Paul made where he did his own experiment using “alternative” fuels -
Paul’s video on “alternative” fuels for the Model A, a little experiment! -

Hi Paul , This video on gas to use in a Model A Ford and the video where you drove you A on diesel and other fuels brought to mind a time in 1982 at the Orange County California Model A & T clubs that I belonged to. For some club meetings that year a member showed movies of his trip in a Model A up and back from LA to Alaska above the Arctic Circle oil field, sponsored by the Arco Oil Company for Arco oil pipeline promotion. Arco was suppose to have gas shipped up to the Arctic depot for his car but the shipment was delayed. He got to the depot in the Model A and needed to head back south by a certain date but no gas had arrived yet. The Arco person said all they had for gas up at the depot was some skim off the crude oil that they used in some small gas engines up there, but that it was only about 60 octane. He said , I will take it , and they left him enough 60 octane gas along the way back south to get to the first town south with regular gas, a distance of several 100 miles south. He said that the Model A ran just fine on the 60 octane gas, giving good power to travel the several 100 miles over very ruff roads to the first town south with gas for sale. He ever thought that the Model A preferred the 60 octane gas because it burned slower in the low compression Model A engine and was no problem at all..

Now that's funny, using paint thinner instead of gas, what a smell that must have produced. Thanks Model T and Paul for these shorts, love them. Have a blessed evening!

Well that’s one way to strip the varnish out of the tank.

Hi, Paul and Tina, I am not sure about your Model A's, but their valve and head design must have been mostly steel and iron.
Cars that used leaded fuels did so to help prevent knock-under load also known as (PINGING) and to protect the soft valve seats that were cushioned by the presence of the lead residue that would buildup over time. When unleaded gas came along hardened cylinder head valve inserts were developed for unleaded fuels. today old design heads can be updated with new hardened valve inserts to protect them from damage. Cars with Catalytic converters must use unleaded fuel only or the Catalytic will be damaged. Have fun with your Model A's.

Good info as always. Like I wrote in Mr Shinn's video, my dad told me stories of running cars on dry cleaning fluid during rationing. I believe he did on occasion before entering WWII. I read you ran a half marathon, congrats that's quite an achievement! God Bless ~ Chuck

My family were farmers in the 1930 s and ran their Plymouth on tractor distillate because that is what they could get. So I am sure the Ford owning neighbors did the same

The only additive you might need is StaBil to keep the lousy mixture they sell as gasoline today from going bad while your car sits through the winter. A tank can last me up to 3-4 months so I add it at every fill up in case it sits for awhile.
