    Fellow left handed ar user here. My preference for bolt release is the magpul bad lever. After inserting mag, the right hand can palm strike to the end of the bad lever, allowing you to mimic the standard manual of arms. The nice side bonus is that it makes it easier for the left hand to lock the bolt to rear as well.

    I saw a guy recently review the VCOG talking about how its not a good optic because its heavier than most LPVOs and other little nit picks like that. Its funny seeing a lot of channels who dont have military or LEO experience make reviews on optics like these and say they are bad. At the end of the review he commented "well one good thing about these is that they are the toughest LPVO that you can get but I dont think that makes the difference".

    We used Dual Optics back in 2006. My unit got issued ACOG's with J-Point red dots(IIRC, we were the first in the Army to get this Unit Wide). The ACOG's were non-fiber optic and they used the Crosshair reticle instead of the Chevron. This was the predecessor to the ACOG+RMR setup the USMC would later go on to adopt. The Concept was great at the time, Sadly though, the J-Point was all that was available at the time and is a seriously garbage sight. No adjustments, had to remove to replace the battery, was Always On, battery life of about 2 days. In the end we all just adapted to using the ACOG only, even for close quarters. Takes practice, but it eventually just becomes natural. We left the J-Points on but that was because we weren't allowed to remove them. "Made us look cool" apparently, lol.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 Місяць тому +1

      Have you kept up with MRDSs and if so, what would you use in place of the J Point? I lived through all of this as well from irons to Aimpoints, ACOG NSN, Eotechs, to LPVOs.

    • @jik294
      @jik294 Місяць тому +1

      @@LRRPFco52 TBH, I've only kept up a little. It sounds like pretty much all of them will eventually have issues when place on a pistol. The vast majority sound like they do fine on a rifle. I, personally, have a bias against Vortex Red Dots as I've consistently had them fail for me on both rifles and pistols(So far, I've had good luck with the Strike Eagle I've been playing with for the past couple years now, but it is a sample size of One). But, that's me. Aimpoint makes good stuff, I just don't like the idea of having to send it to Sweden if/when it fails(even puppies get born dead sometimes). Trijicon seems to be consistently improving their stuff from lessons learned. Personally, My main thing with modern MRDS's is access to the battery and known reliability. Almost none come without adjustability anymore. An enclosed emitter is a plus and it looks like the market is slowly swaying that way too.
      I've been playing a little with the Holosun 507, but I got that on a whim to try out and on sale.
      So, I'd say:
      Ease of battery access.
      Ease of warranty repairability.
      Reliability.
      Sight Adjustment.
      Enclosed emitter.
      NOTE: this may change the more I play with MRDS's. I will say this, it is like a Cheat Code for shooting pistols.
      The reason the J-Point was used all those years ago is because the RMR didn't exist. The USMC RCO setup they would later adopt was a massive improvement all the way around on what we tested. Our setup was a Army Experiment. See what happens when you give EVERYONE an ACOG and a MRDS. Concept was pulled from competition shooting at the time, IIRC.

    • @LRRPFco52
      @LRRPFco52 Місяць тому +1

      @@jik294 Great points. I'm the same way about battery access on MRDSs. Love the durability of the RMR, but having to remove it to replace the power source is no Bueno, though I understand the engineering trade-off for compactness.
      Mainly because I live in the Mountain West region now, I've only been using a lot of MPVOs and LPVOs on ARs, plus I rarely shoot 5.56 anymore after getting into 6.5 Grendel. 12" Grendel is awesome compared even with 20-24" .224" bores. Effects on-target are night/day, but still an easy sight picture to self-spot.

      I’m more likely to find myself wanting something handier inside of a vehicle or a building, and I’d be far more likely to break contact if I was engaged in a long range fight anyway.

    Funny how much the hk416 or USMC M27 resembles this setup.

    Hi Jeff. Thanks so much for the no nonsense info, based on long experience! I’ve built my old colt 6920 into a SOPMOD 2 frankenbuild. Went with a “Troy Delta” rail. Not quite sure how I feel about it. It’s a little flexi, but seems to work. Have you seen or used one? Any opinion it? Thanks again for the great content!

      @Itisbp Yes my buddy ran one in 2014 see competition to combat cross over part II at defensereview.com

      Wow. That’s a variety of different builds for sure. If I was more into cloning, that would be the death of my savings account. Thanks again for the great content.

    I have a set of laRue Tactical LT 152 RIS II Scope mounts I bought back in 08’ and never used. I had no idea about them at the time. Their 1.2” In height, and I’m guessing had something to do with the RIS ll rail, (FSB?) but still don’t really know the story. Were these ever used in theater? I look at the Block ll as a must own system now..

      Larue was very popular, not issued but was purchased by some SF using team funds.

      @@ModernTacticalShooting Cool, thanks. Looks like just the excuse I need to get myself into a Block II so those LT 152 mounts have a proper home..

    Did you ever use any sort of lens covers on your VCOG while in country? I’m debating on keeping them on my NX8. I like the protection, but they’re clunky and slow down getting the rifle into action.

    Hey Jeff, I’m curious about your thoughts on arm fatigue from different positions. Did you find yourself bracing off of cover or going prone in the fire fights that you participated in (not counting the ones you were providing leadership/comms) or shooting a majority of the time unsupported? Does rifle weight with optics, lights, and lasers really add up when in combat and engaging at distance, or is it negligible because you are firing supported?

    Dumb question, I'm a newbie. How do you manage to have a PEQ on the top rail without it blocking your sight picture? Again, sorry if stupid.

    Where can I get one of those modern tactical shooting shirts you're rocking at 10:44?

    I'm sure it was just a slip of the tongue, but optics are not front focal plane, they're first focal plane. I prefer FFP optics over SFP ones.

    Simple fact, if someone gets lead on (or in them) even at 500yds/m they are going to question why they are there.
