  • 2018 has been another good year for games, with lot of big releases... that I didn't play. Here are some smaller, less well known games that make up my favourite games released this year.

    Thank you for giving attention to smaller games like this. The attention you give to mostly unknown games is why I subscribed to you.

    Return of the Obra Din was also the highlight of my 2018. I loved The Hex and Unavowed (which I beta tested), but I only took a passing glance at Two Point Hospital and Kingdom Two Crowns.
    I think I might check them out now. Thank you Pam.

    Thanks for cluing me into some stuff I was oblivious to! Wow... the music playing during the Kingdom: Two Crowns segment is ridiculously relaxing. I've been waiting for a good deal on a physical copy of Vampyr since it launched, but it's been maddeningly undiscounted to this point.

    • @Cannotbetamed1

      That's strange, I assumed Vampyr didn't sell that well, I would have thought it would be much cheaper by now.

    Nice list. I have so much love for Return of the Obra Dinn. I played it super late in the year and it claimed an easy spot on my top five games of the year.

      @Cannotbetamed1  5 років тому +1

      I find a lot of good releases tend to sneak in at the very end of the year. I also played the Hex super late (finished it at the start of January '19) and had to put it on the list.

    I've only played Kingdom New Crowns. Man... the music is just so relaxing. And just about then the monsters start attacking.
    I've tried many management strategy games, but few have a tutorial and learning curve as smooth as Two Point Hospital.
    Also, do check Megaquerium. It's an aquarium building Sim made mostly by one guy.
    Hex and Obra Dinn are high on my to-play list.
    One more 2018 game I would suggest is Speed Brawl. It's a apocalyptic beat-em-up/runner game with some great artwork and animation.

    • @Cannotbetamed1

    This is why I have always enjoyed your channel and its simply because you go against the grain. I know its not intentional. Its just who you are. You open my mind to different titles that I may enjoy. Also your unapologetic approach about not always liking the most popular games makes me laugh.

    Gave up both eating ‘and’ sleeping in 2018, and apparently, I STILL can’t keep up with all these games! Guess I’ll start drafting up my letter of resignation for work...
    This is the first time I’ve seen “Kingdom: Two Crowns”. It looks (and sounds) beautiful. Really want to try it out.
    Frozen wastelands, howling winds, hypothermia...Frost Punk sounds like just another Winter day out here. Looks cool though. Might save it for a Summer playthrough.
    Probably the most exciting game I saw here was Return of the Obra Dinn. Heard great things about it, but Q4 was just too crazy with RDR2, Spider-Man, Smash and Pokémon Let’s Go, and I just couldn’t squeeze it in. Definitely a 2019 candidate.
    Heading over to the CC Forums this afternoon to open up some threads on these. Thanks as always, Pam, for shedding some light on these lesser-voiced titles!

    I only tried Return of the Obra Dinn of the ones you listed but I couldn't get into it along with Papers, Please for more than a few hours before I felt like I grasped what the game was really about. I didn't think I'd be experiencing anything new beyond that point, with the gameplay in both boiling down to carefully inspecting text and photos to decipher clues with some mechanical quizzes to make sure you did. Instead of managing to make me feel like an investigator, it made me feel more like being a student again being given pop quizzes on the textbooks I read for a homework assignment.
    That said, I'm admittedly a very tough one to immerse (the last game that really immersed me was Knights of the Chalice and that was many years ago), probably in part because I'm a game developer and tend to see through the mechanics and start analyzing the game's design very quickly if I'm bored at any given moment. I actually love the monochromatic visual style of Obra Dinn though.
    The best murder mystery game I ever tried that really made me feel like a detective was actually The Scoop (1986) and somewhat Rise of the Dragon (1990).

    Nice to see Wadjet Eye Games on your list, people often give them grief but as you say they are still developing for the Point and Click audience, trying out new mechanics and approaches.
    I really want to try Return of the Obra Dinn but haven't had chance to pick it up yet.
    I have played so much this year that I have really enjoyed so I'll pick 5 of my favourite games this year ( in no order )
    Into The Breach / Megaquarium / Unforeseen Incidents / Russian Subway Dogs / Cultist Simulator/ All Walls Must Fall
    Ok maybe 6 :P

    yeah most of 2018 in terms of games was "oh wow this looks like a good game that i don't give a shit about". the only "big" release i think i cared about was the spyro reignited trilogy but i don't have a modern console. return of the obra dinn was great though.

I never saw the Hex game before it looks like something I would enjoy, thanks for sharing that.

  • @jaredlance8451
    @jaredlance8451 5 років тому +2

    Frostpunk was a pleasant (?) surprise this year. I wish the campaign was longer though.
    I enjoyed Kingdom. How different is Two Kingdoms? Worth getting if you have the original?
    For myself, Dead Cells and Nier: Automata are probably my biggest time sinks. Dead Cells scratches that "one more time" itch, and Nier provided a great story.

    • @Cannotbetamed1
      @Cannotbetamed1  5 років тому

      I like that they added new scenarios to Frostpunk after release.
      Two Crowns is very similar to New Lands. The biggest changes for me were that it was less rogue-like - if you lose your crown you don't lose everything. It's easier to get back to where you were. You can also 'finish' each island by destroying the cliff portal. There are also seasons (winter is kinds dull though) and there's a new Japanese-style game mode, but making restarting after a loss less punishing was the biggest deal for me.
