- 2017 has been a great year for gaming, with a number of huge, critically acclaimed releases... most of which you won't find on my personal list. I played 30 new releases this year so today I'm sharing my top 10 games of 2017. There's a wide variety of games from smaller indie titles to AAA shooters, expansive RPGs and some hidden gems.
Most game footage is taken from official trailers and used under fair use. Some is my own footage. Cuphead footage is from • CUPHEAD (Honest Game T... . Nice job copyrighting footage of a game you didn't create, Smosh.

I love how different and unconventional your lists are. I never pay attention to what games come out. I love the obscure gems, but am horrible at actually seeking them out. Numbers 1 and 2 on your list I had never heard of, and they just shot to the top of my list. :)
Awesome, I hope you like them when you pick them up
Great selection of games. I learn more from UA-cam than gaming news sites
Thanks!
My top three would have to be Persona 5, NieR: Automata, and Horizon Zero Dawn. I really enjoyed the gameplay and themes of Horizon, whereas NieR's existentialist philosophy and cheekyness(?) were to die for. Persona 5... it's Persona. It's awesome.
I really like your list, by the way. It's refreshing to not see Zelda and Mario on there. I played them myself and enjoyed them, but I wasn't too hot for them like everyone else was. I picked up the first Divinity: Original Sin and I still need to get through it before I play the second.
I didn't play Breath of the Wild, but I wasn't that big a fan of Mario Odyssey. I liked Nier Automata, but I only played until ending A.
Happy new year Pam!!! hope we get 2018 with many more of your videos!! best of wishes to you and your projects!
Thanks, happy new year to you!
I hadn't even heard of Thimbleweed Park. Love that Maniac Mansion-y art style. The Lion's Song looks like another gem I wouldn't have otherwise heard about, too. Thanks, Pam!
No problem!
Excellent list. 2017 had been so amazing this year, it seems as if all genres got at least one great game.
I played the first episode of The Lion's Song, and the pixel art with the limited color palette made me in love with it (few scenes were wallpaper material).
Apparently, this game was the studio's first game, so that's even more impressive.
Season greetings and have a Happy New Year.
Happy New Year to you as well. I hope you can pick up the other Lions Song episodes, they are just as good as the first.
I love this channel I can feel your love of gaming in the way you speak plus I love that you are a huge fan of adventure games
Thanks!
Happy New Year, Pam! Great video.
A few (of the not as “expected”) games you didn’t mention here, but that I really enjoyed this year are Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Nier: Automata.
I need to play more of Nier Automata. I got to ending A, but then I decided I had enough. If they had just structured it in a way where my brain didn't feel like it was being forced to replay a game 3 times, I probably would have gotten the 5 endings.
CupHead ☕🤖
Although I've played less video games this year than I have in the past, I was very glad to get to play Torment: Tides of Numenara. This was such a refreshing and immersive game, and I adored the soundtrack and the writing was some of the best I've seen in a video game. Glad to see it made your list.
The writing was so good. I was reminded of that when I was looking back at the footage for this.
Another good video Pam enjoy your content happy new year
Thank you!
Happy new Year Pam! There are some hidden gems in your top 10! Only Wolfestein 2 and Timbleweed Park are on mine!
Happy new year!
This is by far my favorite top ten's video u have done i love it so much ^-^
Aww, thanks :)
really cool to see lion's song on here. loved that game, but played a year late on switch. loved sexy brutale and edith finch as well.
Great list Pam! At least half of these I would definitely check out, Cuphead looks almost too good to be true :)
File this one under "for future reference".
Thanks for all the fish... I mean videos and have a great 2018!
Thanks! I hope you have a great 2018 as well.
Great picks,Pam 👍 My favorite game of last year (2017) was "Prey". I think it's such an under appreciated and underrated game, and a huge sleeper hit of 2017.
Prey is a game I thought I'd really like, but when I played the demo I didn't enjoy the combat at all.
@@Cannotbetamed1 I didn't care much for the combat when I first played "Prey". But,I got used to it after a while. I found the story and the enemies to be interesting. The phantoms and mimics were creepy lol But,I can totally understand and respect your opinion. "Prey" is a "you're gonna love it,or you're gonna hate it" kind of game.
Unbelievable artwork in 'pyre', this video made my jaw drop
Right?! It's so beautiful, I love the colours.
happy 2018 pam! much success
Thank you!
very welcome
Nice list! There are several on here that I've been pining to play, and several that I knew in name only. 2017 had a lot to offer, for sure.
Thanks! There certainly were a lot of good games in 2017, there are still a bunch I want to play or get back to playing.
Great video Pam, I missed a few of them. I found Xcom War of the Chosen to be exhausting (in a good way)
So glad you listed Cuphead. One of my favorites of the year and probably the most satisfying game finish ever(brutal, right?) Will try Edith Finch, thanks for the recommendation.
No problem, I hope you like it!
Good video as always Pam.
My favourites that I played in 2017:
Doki Doki Literature Club
Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire
Cities Skylines w/Green Cities + other DLC
Open TTD
Crusader Kings 2: Monks and Mystics
Thanks!
Sexy Brutale is one superb but overlooked game. It is among my favourite games of the year, along with Battle Chef Brigade and The Count Lucanor
Yay, glad to see someone else who appreciates the game. I want to try Battle Chef Brigade.
I was in love with the game ever since the first trailer they released ^_^ I hope you enjoy Battle Chef Brigade
Another great video! I have a question about the music in the intro to ur channel... (its a very catchy baseline) did you compose it yourself? In other words, are you a bass player?
Nope, it's free music from the internet. The links in the video description.
Oh ok...cool!
As i loved sexy brutale, i think they missed a great opportunity. The last level should have been a level where you prevent every single murder throughout the day. It would have been a challenging yet exceptionally climatic ending where you put all your learned skills to work
Here My games of 2017:
1. Super Mario Oddysey
2. Breath of the Wild
3. River City Rival Showdown
4. DB Xenoverse 2
5. River City Ransom Underground
6. Sonic Forces
7. Star Fox 2 (SNES Classic Edition)
8. Yooka Laylee
9. Metroid: Samus Returns
10. Seiken Denetsu Collection
11. Ultra Street Fighter II
@HicksZ34 "Prey" is an absolutely amazing game, and criminally underrated. Definitely recommend it.
Where is Splatoon 2 ???
what remains of Edith Finch looks good too. Thanks for reviewing them both.
No problem
Great list Pam! I still need to play Cuphead, I'm just waiting for the physical release. lol
It's so dumb that they released a case for it but no disc.
Pretty intresting list i don't know the majority of the games here (aside cuphead or wolfenstein). Thanks for the reccomendations. Also what do you think about hellblade? It is a good game?
I haven't played Hellblade
Nice! not a boring list. You have good tastes in gaming.
Thank you
The Sexy Brutal was interesting how you have to save the guest. It's going for a good price on Amazon right now too.
www.pluggedin.com/game-reviews/sexy-brutale/
Happy New Year! Divinity Original Sin 2 looks sublime. I'm growing more fond of turn-based SRPGs over those with active time sequence combat. Also, love the hats in The Sexy Brutale, fits in nicely with the jazzy music.
Happy new year Diego! I think The Sexy Brutale just came out for Switch, which is cool because when I played it I thought about how it would be really good on a handheld.
Yes it released on December 7th, I'll definitely be picking this one up.
Your list is really unique, that’s super refreshing compared to all the other copy-paste lists on UA-cam
Thanks!
Cuphead was so good! Good pick!
VERY obscure list, I dig it....you're the first person who made me want to play Edith Finch... hmm and Sexy Brutale has been on the list for me. I wanna do a Let's Play of it! :3
Thanks! I have so many games to play now, but yesterday I found myself re-installing Sexy Brutale to play again. It's so charming! A Let's Play of it would be cool.
www.pluggedin.com/game-reviews/sexy-brutale/
Thanks I'm def going to get TimbleWeed Park as soon and the stimulus check comes in. And I lovvvvvveee Cuphead. It's challenging...All you're picks are worth trying.
Hope you like Thimbleweed!
Resident Evil 7, South Park Fractured but Whole, Shantae 1/2 genie hero, Metroid Samus Returns, Odyssey/BOTW
Huge RE fan I also played RE7 in 2017😀
Thimbleweed Park reminds me of Maniac Mansion. Looks great. I will definitely be checking it out. Thanks!
It's very similar to MM and there's a lot of references to it (even some characters from it). But I like it more since there was more direction on what you're supposed to be doing.
Just added the game to my wishlist on Steam. It's currently £14.99. Hoping to get it for maybe £10 or less.
Thanks for making me aware of this wonderful looking game.
My favourite game of the year was one that de-throned a long-time favourite of mine. Hollow Knight.
I've been a fan of Metroidvania games ever since I played the first Metroid back in.. 1991 or 92. And Super Metroid was the game I've enjoyed the most, even going so far as to be the only game I've given a serious try at speed running (back in 2003-2004...). I was honestly not expecting any metroidvania game to de-throne it, but Hollow Knight did. Despite a slow start, the game really opens up after the first real boss (pretty much everyone I've talked to shares my view on the game in this regard, the game gets a lot better after the first boss), and it's a real joy to play! The controls feel incredibly smooth and fluid, and just moving through the world is fun.
I really want to play Hollow Knight. I hope it comes out on XBox at some point.
It's nice to see a list that isn't the same as most people's. Also it reminds me that I still need to check out divinity 2.
Yes, Divinity 2 is so worth it.
Amazing list thanks Pam! Can't say I disagree with any game on this list! :) though as much as I adore the XCOM series, I've found it incredibly difficult since the very first game decades ago and it doesn't seem to get any easier with each game! lol
It can be quite difficult. I want to play the original but that game doesn’t give much instruction at all, and I gave up on it real quick.
Good stuff, I'm stuck on Ys VIII and keep going back to BOTW
I love how unconventional these picks are. It makes you stand out. I love Cuphead but after World 1, I haven't played since. I know...sad but I'll get back to it. eventually
I took a lot of breaks when I played Cuphead, especially after hitting a particularly tough boss.
Do you ever force yourself to complete a game that you don't enjoy? How do you choose what's worth your time? I hardly play new games anymore and find myself just replaying old ones because I know I like it. Also what chair is that in the back?
Occasionally I complete games I don't enjoy, but I've been trying to not do that. The big open world games are particularly bad for this, and I'm kind of sick of them anyway, so I've started just avoiding them rather than get stuck pouring countless hours into something I'm not really enjoying. One thing I appreciate about playing on Steam is the return policy. That lets me try all kind of new things without worrying about wasting my money. If I play something for 20 minutes and it hasn't grabbed me - I just ask for a refund.
The chair is a DX Racer.
Interesting list of obscure games making your top ten besides wolfenstein 2 and cuphead which I recognized. However I respectfully disagree with your number one choice though. Not sure if you’ve played breath of the wild yet but it’s not for nothing why it’s considered to be goty everywhere else. It truly is a masterpiece of a game and even though it’s open world, it’s not cookie cutter and is very unique so just because it’s open world shouldn’t be drawback or flaw preventing you from playing the game. Would love to hear a review from you. Anyway keep up the great work! I love your videos 😀
Thanks! I have not played Breath of the Wild yet.
I tend consider Divinity II a AAA game or at least, something like HellBlade. Anyway it's refreshing to see a Games of the year list without loads and loads of Nintendo games. XD
I don't generally think of Kickstarter games as AAA, though I'm not even sure how I'd define AAA vs. indie anymore. I think people were calling Hellblade AA, because although it looked photorealistic there were only about 20 devs on it and it was self-published.
I tend to classify games by budget, but you are right te line between Indie and AAA is blurring it out. Anyways lets celebrate a wonderful year for games of any Kind. And Keep it up next year Pam!
(And happy new year!)
Hmmmm, no Life is Strange: Before the Storm? I figured the LIS games might be ones you'd like, but maybe just not enough to make the list? Of course, I loooove Torment: TON, and I was so glad to see Edith Finch on your list. My picks are the three aforementioned games, plus Tacoma, Obduction (though first released in 2016, it was released for PS4 a few months ago, so mayyyybe that counts? lol), Stories Untold, and Telltale's Batman and Guardians of the Galaxy. :)
Oops, I forgot about Late Shift, though that one was reallllly short.
I did like the original Life is Strange, but I haven't played the new one. Tacoma and Stories Untold were ones that just missed my list, I really liked those as well.
Well damn Pam I thought you fell off the earth glad to see your doing well
I've been here...
I don't think I have played a single 2017 release yet. I did play the free first episode of Lion's Song - on your recommendation! - but I think that was last year and I haven't bought the others yet.
Every one of the games on your list are on my wishlist. :)
Stories Untold is a 2017 release (yes, I'm creeping your Steam). A lot of these are on sale right now, though I've mostly behaved myself this Steam sale.
Oh! Haha well there you go. That was another of your recs!
Now that was fun
I was so looking forward to Thimbleweed Park, and it didn't dissapoint. Have you tried Prey (2017) yet? I just picked it up in the steam sale, and it's excellent so far. Wish there was less story and more shooting nazis in the newer Wolfenstein games. Really offputting for me anyway.
I tried the Prey demo and didn't really like it, so I never picked it up.
Yeah I'm playing on hard as well, constantly carrying turrets around to kill things when I can.
Most of the Games I was looking forward to 2017 have been delayed or was ported to a system that no longer supports my hardware. Shenmue 3, BattleTech, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Now if Ajit Pai has his way it appears 2018 isn't going to shape up any better for people like me programming with Online Software that isn't one of the network super companies. Still if Apple Store had Deus Ex: Mankind Divided or public funded projects like Shenmue 3 actually were competent. I'm sure those 2017 releases that are only available through Linux with a Season Pass or just plain won't be released until To Be Announced. Could have been fun.
That sucks :(
Year of the lootbox!
Is it just me, or does Sexy Brutale have a vaguely stop-motion aesthetic?
Yeah, I can see that. The characters do kind of look like they are molded from clay.
my goty was horizon zero dawn.. spent over 100 hours with it.. i absolutely hate aloy.. but the actual game is amazing
Nice
So what was wrong with Horizon: Zero Dawn for it not to make on your list?
I didn't play it.
You got to play 30 new games this year? Lucky....between the 60 hour work week I was forced into and trying to move which sadly took most of my free time this past year I only played....none. Not even sure what released this year. If I did get a minute to sit down I'd go with something familiar to help ease my mind. This meant I played the crap out of sonic chaos and psychic world.
Aww, that's unfortunate.
thanks to a raspberry pi I built this year I've been playing a lot of older games.I've played hotshots 2 (psx) and snatcher (sega cd),but for me GOTY would be parasite eve (psx) .. I hope its some kinda remake like resident evil 1/0 did.
I would LOVE a Parasite Eve remake.
I hope that it happens some day its a great game. keep the core game play update the graphic's better hi rez backgrounds and models like capcom did with resident evil 1/0 a few years ago, but I'm not to sure if adding full voice acting would make it better, but it would be cool if there was.
+DudeOmega why do you say psx and not ps1
Ross Robertson habit I've always have.
I want Cuphead soooo bad! But I'm not buying a console for one game again. I learned my lesson * cough * Wii U.
You can play on PC as well. ;)
What game did you buy Wii U for?
Cannot be Tamed Mario Kart 8. That's how Nintendo gets me every time, ever since the N64.
You can run Cuphead on a potato of a PC!
very nice. mine are...
tales of berseria
persona5
nier automata
horizon
trails in the sky 3rd
battlechasers nightwar
divinity
pyre
hob
life is strange before the storm
Nice list.
btw have you noticed youtube is hating on any 1 the does lets plays of persona games and shin megami tensei ????
No
ya atlus is owned by nintendo now so any 1 that streams it gets a flag against them and gets there video deleted most time
Hey beautiful. I just saw your video. I'm slowly getting back into gaming and a lot of the games on your list I never heard before but am definitely interested in. Thanks for sharing your opinion :)
"My top 10 PC games" Hi I'm Pam ;)
Only two of the games on the list are not available on console.
These are still pretty much pc games (gameplay wise with a mouse and shit) except cuphead. Its ok, I was just pointing the fact that you are obviously more a pc gamer !
Very PC centrist but i'll take it.
Only 2 of these games aren't available on console (though I'd never play Torment on console even though you technically could).
In no particular order
Best video game list of 2017: 2017 edition
Super Mario 64 DS
Zeld the new one
Titanfall 2
Blaster Master Zero
Gotta Protectors
Bakugan Defenders of the Core
Demon’s Souls
Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Decepticons
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Lego Jurassic World
The Transformers games look fun, but I haven't tried them.
The DS ones are alright, the best one is definitely Devastation tho. They lend themselves to beat em ups well
you have games on your list that came out before 2017
Yeah man, i played em all this year tho
Nice list, CBT. To me, 2017 was another disappointing year for video games (just like 2016 video game year as well). Wolfenstein 2 TNC was my only game of the year while rest of them were ho-hum.
Interesting, a lot of people consider 2017 one of the best years for video games.
Cannot be Tamed Well, that's their opinion & I respect that. But, I just think it was more disappointing than 2016. This year has yet to prove me wrong & 2018 is on it's way to be another disappointing year for video games.
no before the storm how dare you rofl jk jk love your list its awesome :D
I am not sure why people love Divinity Original Sin II
I played it and fouind it quite boring. Yes the game is huge... but it feels really generic.
breath of the wild is on all lists here but i found it boring and pedantic like Lois' meatloaf (Family Guy).
I don't have a list but here are a few:
Super Mario Odyssey
Breath of the wild
What remains of edith finch
Danganronpa v3
Metroid samus returns
Doki doki literature club (I'm counting it, even if it has less gameplay than edith finch and Danganronpa)
Little nightmares
Snake pass
A hat in time
Mario + rabbids
Miitopia
And these are the games I played in 2017 but were released before (because I mostly played these)
Metroid: Super, fusion, zero mission, prime
Castlevania symphony of the night and aria of sorrow
Xenogears
Chibi robo
I don't really want to make a list of the best I just want to recommend some games I've played this year that I personally enjoyed
I really want to play Mario + Rabbids. Hopefully in 2018.
Where is Splatoon 2 in this list ??
It’s a pity that you don’t speak Russian and I have to translate your speech in my head from English into Russian.
I knew from the start no AAA in your list but it was hilarous anyway when you said it.
I wouldn't say Breath of the wild is one of the best games this year either. I liked much more the old style Zelda games. Now it's Skyrim-like...and Skyrim bored me to death so, not for me and back to Majoras Mask.
Persona5, even if it is way too long, Yakuza0 and Xenoblade2, are my favourite games this year.
Most of the bigger games I mentioned I didn't play. I'm really tired of huge open world games. I think Yakuza0 could have been on my list if I played more of it, I really liked it, I just don't play too many games in the room the PS4 is in.
Cannot be Tamed I love Yakuza games because they are big enough to forget about the story a few hours but it gets you on track quite easily. It doesn't try to hide poor gameplay with a ton of sidequests and story and characters are great. That is the kind of "open world" I like.
I really want to play more western Rpgs. Pillars of eternity looks great and so Divinity2.
Hey Pam, thx for this - mostly - unconventional list. It's quite boring to watch every UA-camr putting up a list with the same triple AAA titles on it. Please keep up your unconventional approach of releasing video game related videos. I unsubscribed a few, much more famous, channels within the last few weeks because I rather spend my precious time watching just a few real reviews a year than fake triple AAA companies advertisments two or three times a week. Happy New Year!
Well, I'm glad you enjoy my picks, happy new year!
Let's see... I've never played any of these games and have barely even heard of them. I would say you are in the minority overall. Many of these too seem to have questionable content, morals, and ethics. Why play some of this garbage?
Hmm... seems like you're out of the loop when it comes to games.
what an ugly taste of video games...
Sorry about your bad taste.
Great list i would have added ogre battle march of the black queen :p
hmm... I don't know if that would qualify :P
