- Ex-LMS Black 5, 44871, working light engine from Carnforth to Southall with Ian Riley at the regulator. Unfortunately the loco was running under caution, following a preceding Blackpool North-Euston Pendolino. Monday 19 February 2024.
Looks like the black 5 is trying to make a echo of Preston station the way u can hear the whistle noise
Indeed - a good echo through the station Scott.
Fantastic black and white footage!
Many thanks Loke!
Great to hear that rather mournful Stanier whistle as she passed by David and very nicely panned too
Thanks D - nice to see even though she was just coasting.
Short and sweet David, a great catch in black and white and a superb whistle makes for a wonderful shot, cheers nige 👍
Thanks Nige - definitely needed that whistle to lift the shot with her running under caution.
Black and white is just right for this shot David. So nostalgic. Bit clever with the colour light signals. Take care - Chris
Many thanks Chris, glad you agree - the light was a bit tricky creating some fairly smudgy colours, so B&W helped with that too - and just looked so much better when I converted it. Glad you like the signals too - they are part of the scene which just have to retain their colour :D Thanks again, David.
As late as 1968 similar locos moved around Preston and some on London trains as far as Crewe. This one is in good condition. Back in 1966-68 they were awful, little maintenance and sounded when running hard rather like a bag of rusty spanners.
Many thanks for sharing your memories, Preston very much central to the end of steam. 44871 has just received winter maintenance and a new coat of paint, a fabulously cared for engine. Thanks again, David.
