Alfred is the goat, he's one of the only few people who can stand up to Bruce and tell him what it is and not afraid to fight people who could kill him like joker or bane. Not to mention he's not just a father to Bruce but the rest of the bat family. Favorite Alfred centered comic was the one with the family coming together after Alfred funeral telling stories of when he helped them out and was there he's the glue that keeps this family together.

I may be the one person who will say this. Alfred can die. HOWEVER! It has to be done right, like Alfred saving Batman from something that was meant for him and him alone. That being said If Alfred has to die, someone else as to fill or equal the role that was left. Honestly if Jim saw how fucked up Bats was now and became the glue that Alfred was (honestly with a little more harsh tones if I'm real) I could be fine with that. Every other time though Alfred needs to be there for the Bat-Family, cause he is the family that they all need and is the only person who can make Batman, Bruce once more.

Alfred either has to die by saving batman or in something completely natural 100% unrelated to the cowl and crime, a heart attack or something, I could accept it even if hurted, the way he was killed is such a bad one

Of all the runs that have come since the end of King’s, I’ve liked Zdarsky’s the best in part because he’s actually touched on Alfred’s absence.
One of the key parts of the Failsafe storyline was that Alfred was supposed to be there to stop it from activating in case Bruce was framed. He was the failsafe for failsafe, and the fact that Failsafe did so much damage is just a testament to Alfred’s importance.

    • @wilsonng994
      @wilsonng994 Місяць тому +3

I agree. Alfred's presence or lack thereof really hurts the Bat-family in more ways than one and now without Alfred to deactivate the Failsafe protocol, it looks like things aren't looking too good for Batman and the rest of the Bat-family.

Agreed. Alfred's been an important and integral part of the Bat-family and his death was actually something I've really couldn't get over it. The way Bane killed him and the fact that Damien was forced to watch really screwed us over. I know Alfred's death is meant for Batman to have some character growth but he's practically a father figure to Bruce and the other Robins and the other DC heroes too. DC needs to bring Alfred back since Batman is probably going to face some troubles in the future and it might not look pretty.

I love Alfred, absolutely adore him... but he should stay dead. We're meant to grieve and miss his loss as much as the characters do.
And it's an interesting scenario. I think a lot of writers were able to explore his absence really well, especially in Nightwing, Robin and Batman & Robin.

  • @TheErubus4077

Alfred is (in my opinion) the greatest supporting character in Batman. And him dying is just strange. I do think it can work but only if it’s set in the far future. But even then you get a replacement. Tim and Dick take over as the moral center and Barbra (if you go down the Oracle route) as the tech support. Personally I think it would be fun if Mr. Freeze took that role after Alfred dies.

I mean yes that's certainly been the status quo for Alfred for decades but let's not forget that that's how he started out. Originally he was Alfred Beagle who came to work for Batman well after he was Batman and Robin was there already and never raised him. I do absolutely agree that Alfred has since become one of the most essential supporting characters, but I still would say that Lois Lane is still the best one in comics.

My father watched his whole family fall apart after his great grandmother passed away. They all separated off to their own little groups. After her funeral they all began to fight. It's been 16 years since she passed so in all likelihood half of them are dead. My dad only calls his sisters and his one first cousin. So it's accurate to how a family can fall apart after someone's death

I'm kind of glad that we get to talk about just how wild Batman has gotten with no Alfred as a moral compass. While this is a bit OOC but Injustice to me was the biggest example of just how badly Bruce needs Alfred. Alfred was always the guiding hand serving in Bruce's corner over Bruce's relationship with Damian, doing his best to have the father son duo to talk after so many horrible communicational issues.

If Alfred comes back he’ll be back to doing all of Batman’s needs while Bruce sits in his cave and hunches over his keyboard. Make the man do his own damn dishes. Alfred is integral to Batman and the bat family. But I say leave him dead, at least for a good while. We've had 80 years with him, lets see what stories can be told in his absence. Bringing him back kind of makes his death meaningless, and Batman has enough of a family now to move on without Alfred. Everyone has to lose thier parents/grandparents at some point, even the Bat-Family. If the Bat-Family survives and prospers with Alfred gone, it means he did a great job giving them the skills and love they needed while he was alive.

  • @callmeoak311

Alfred is important because it’s him who ultimately helps shape Batman. Bruce could have gone the way of Thomas Wayne Jr. and become Owlman, but he had an Alfred who was compassionate, who raised this young boy with morals and ethics that define his character. Alfred can be the voice of reason when Batman goes too deep, he can stand up to Batman when no one else is willing to do so. That moment where Alfred scolds Bruce, telling him that he won’t yell at Dick, speaks volumes as to how important Alfred is.

Wait.. that stupid storyline is still canon ? ( i haven't read Batman since the King run put me off ) They really should have Alfreds meta-gene kick in and have him turn into the Outsider again, or have Superboy Prime punch reality, or use a Lazarus pit, or have Spectre say 'hang on you're not meant to be dead' and restore Alfred. It should be easy to bring him back.

I love Alfred and his death really cemented his importance to me. My first look at his gangster was in the Batman vs Robin animated movie, and the injustice run when he went against Superman. He really was the glue and showed what a father should be. Only reason why im not torn, is because Im of the belief that the Batfamily should be stronger than this. I feel Batman while still being hurt of course, should be stronger than this. But again, it doesnt help that he basically got no one else. I personally feel a world without Alfred while sad could work. They just need to develop characters past what they were before, which we know they dont like to do for extended periods. Suprised myself that Alfred been gone for 5 YEARS

I will defend TDKR Alfred leaving because it’s not the first time he does it to prove a point to Bruce in media, in Legends of the Dark Knight venom, Alfred leaves Bruce to show him that his substance abuse was a problem, he also gives Bruce an ultimatum in Telltale because Bruce was doing really shady- well shadier stuff with suicide squad (if I remember correctly) and also there’s a difference between going away and staying gone, I’m sure Alfred would’ve returned ofc, its just the plot literally locked him out of Gotham, But idk that’s my opinion

I love Alfred and I agree that even though the Bat Family shouldn't turn on itself without him doesn't mean it's still empty without him, but I've always hated death getting retconned. Some people make it work, like Jason Todd and Norman Osborne, but I just hate how retconning death makes light of the fate everyone is heading to and has to deal with. So, I'm torn on whether I think it's bold or a travesty that they've committed this long to Alfred's (second?) death.
I definitely agree that Batman needs levity (just as I would say comedy stories need drama) and even though I don't think any character or institution should be bulletproof (or else there's no tension), getting rid of Alfred AND Gordon is a lot to while still asking readers to keep paying $3-$5 every month.

Cause Alfred is the voice of reason for everyone, so by taking him away they basically took away the glue that holds everyone together. On the other hand, I don't hate the idea of Alfred dying from a story perspective. It's nice to see comic continuities actually progress (see frustration with Spidercucking because we can't have Peter evolve into a married man).
The thing is you've got to find a way to make that interesting and compelling going forward. You need to have Batman (or someone else at least) grow in some ways to fill the void left by Alfred's absence. Bring in that comfort and rationality from somewhere else now that Alfred can no longer provide it. Also imo it's more compelling when Alfred dies of natural causes as opposed to murder

Ever since finishing invincible, I’ve grown a small toxic hatred towards the nature of status quo, and how comics will never change or end in any huge significant way, and knowing my favorite comic characters are gonna outlive me never really get a peaceful ending. and even though I wish Alfred had a more peaceful death like aunt May when she died in the comics, I don’t mind the idea of Bruce and everyone else in the comics continuing on without Alfred and growing more and more as characters and just trying to make him proud. As stupid and intellectual as it may or may not sound, it’s just how I feel.🤷‍♂️

Alfred is Batfamily member number 0. Not because he’s the most useless, but because he comes before everyone else, even Bruce

I'd say Alfred is tied with ma and pa Kent. They actively shaped superman into what he is today while Alfred actively supports bruce wayne and is his lifeline to growing his family

On one hand odd but in the other bravo for NOT undoing it asap when they writer shifted. Since when wriers change best to just consider that a reboot.

I'm fine with Alfred being killed off, hell I might even say that I like it, BUT what I really don't like is how it was a way to torture and traumatize Damian and something to bring him down and shit instead of Bruce like the way it should've been. Like... Kill off Alfred, just in front of Bruce, his son.

Not everything needs to be about Bruce though. Bruce can go without Alfred, he has before. But with Damian, Alfred and Dick are his support system. This happening has forced much needed character development for Damian.

Alfred Pennyworth is the GOAT, but I don't know if I want him to come back. It would need to be a real good Story. Also this way Alfred can't get worse as a character with a new writer who will Ruin his legacy.
I think a better way would be for someone else to pick up the mantle that Alfred left behind. Someone should step up with the intent to hold the Batfamily together.

Even though we know that Alfred will back in the comics once the Reeves and Gunn Batman movies come out, emotionally, i like the way that Alfred’s death has affected Bruce, and forces him to learn how to get closer to Damian without his constant advice. It allowed Bruce a chance to grow and evolve.
Think about it… All children have to eventually have to deal with the loss of their parents and learn how to carry on with what they taught them, despite no longer being around. Why should Bruce be any different?
What bothers me is HOW Alfred dead. He should have gone out like a Hero, not as a victim. He’s the guy who keeps a shotgun and a secret stash of guns hidden in the manor, for crying out loud! Just unforgivable!

As a Spider-Man fan, we'd all glady trade with Batman fans to get some kind of changing dynamic instead of status quo stagnation. Just joking, but honestly I don't think Alfred dying is a bad thing itself but it certainly was since it was just done for shock value and cheap emotional moments every now and then. I think a story focusing entirely on Alfred passing away forcing Bruce to really tackle that isolationist side of Batman and either grow closer to the Batfamily or maybe become something worse for awhile until they can reach out to him would be interesting.

I'd like Alfred back but in another year or so. Batman just got the Pennyworth estate and we have a new status quo with Batman being more trusting and controlling his paranoia, but its being interrupted by this dragged out Absolute Power crossover event. I'd like at least a year's worth of stories with this new status quo before they bring Alfred back.

Isn't it better for Alfred to be death, Bruce should grow out of need for Alfred and grow to be a better man
And idea of "it was clayface all alone" is just stupid, same as " he was death and now he returned like nothing had happened"
