SHOULD Jason Todd have come back to life? Do you think it was ultimately a good idea?

I actually think that the way Jason comes back to life is an even better storyline, at least while he is the dark and effectively evil version Batman. That makes the failure even bigger and more apparent. The failure isn’t that Bruce “let” Jason die, it’s that he failed him in many more ways and even failed him by bringing him into the Batcave and into the mantle of Robin. The fact that he became corrupt and violent is a testament to that failure, more than his death alone is imo.

Really nicely said. Batman’s failure defined not just Jason, but himself too 💔

I think Jason coming back was a good thing because it basically gave us even more of a deep dive into how even someone as unshakable as Batman could be haunted by the ghost of his past in Jason becoming the Redhood. And I think Under the Redhood movie portrays it perfectly with Jensen Ackles

Personally I think Jason is a good foil for Bruce when he’s brought back to life and becomes Red Hood.
Above all Jason is loyal to the bat family but he’s his own man and doesn’t bow down to every decision Bruce makes because in young justice season 3 Bruce only makes it a point to include former protégés of his!
Jason has an edge to him that makes him a much more rounded character.

Regarding the debate as to whether Jason should have ever been resurrected or not, I can see the arguement for both sides but for me keeping him deceased, while it did certainly have an important impact on Batman, having a character's existence that has already been portrayed as a type of either protagonist or co-protagonist in this case with him as Robin, for them to be defined by simply what they did for another character just feels like the equivalent of "fridging" a character albeit with some differences.
Since his resurrection (as nonsensical as the way it came about was) the interest in the character has never been stronger and the message of failure Batman felt from Death in the Family still remain which is why I like when in the end of the original Under the Hood story when asked if he would want to remove Jason's memorial in the Batcave, he refuses and says that it doesn't change anything at all.
However, since his resurrection I think it's fair to say that the way he has been written has been pretty all over the place and for the most part I have not cared for everything that they have done with his character. And to be clear, as a character, his concept as Red Hood where he killed people and Batman was a failure for never killing the Joker is something I never agreed with and always found edgy for the sake of being edgy, which is why I loved what Chip Zdarsky did with him (as short lived as it was).
Like I said, I think bringing him back was the right move, it's just what they have done with him since could have been better.

I’m a bit of an emotional sadist when it comes to Batman. Jason Todd dies Batman gets to have his memories of him color how he should act. Kind of like how modern Batman stories are exploring his father not being a shiny beacon that Bruce remembers. Jason coming back shoves every ounce of his failure in his face. Not merely a tragedy in a temporary failure that got him killed. But he has to see how his fathering itself made Jason like this.

  • @IIIISai

Jason peaked in his one movie, he was a perfect crime lord and savior of gotham but deep down all he wanted was approval, it shows we are al human at the end of the day, people get mad that jason did not kill joker, but even though his logic was sound it was not the point, it was to simply open batmans mind, sadly it didnt work the writers keep batman flat and delusional

Mostly commenting for the algorithm, but bringing Jason Todd back was absolutely the right move. If he had stayed dead, Jason would pop up on the occasional “did you know” TikTok post for forgotten comic book characters. As is, he’s a foil for Batman’s methods much like the Punisher is for Daredevil, while at the same time having history that impacts the Bat family and a gray morality that makes him much more versatile than other Robins.

He is the greatest character that came back from the dead because he changes, it has an impact, he is not the same character. I prefer him being back because he gaves great stories and if he hadn't come back he would be nothing, completely forgotten so he would not have any impact to batman stories. In most cannon he already is non existent.

Jason coming back as the Redhood was differently a huge W for DC! He is my (and many other people's) favorite comics charecter OF ALL TIME!!!
And it also shows a new perspective on the viewers as Jason becomes what Batman would have became if he didn't have a mortal code and started killing! For example in the video you showed Arkham knight game as playing as Jason, you can see in some modes that he has sniper too, the game becomes a lot easier! As you can kill the NPC a lot easier and finish the game quicker, that shows how easier batman's job would have been if he started killing! So it shows a new perspective on Batman and his mortal code and also Redhood is a very badass charecter especially in Arkham knight "How about you go to hell? Say hi to Joker for me"

One of the better deaths in modern comics was the death of wolverine. It had a great build up and inevitable climax, his death was felt through out the whole universe and was a genuinely good “end” for the character at the time. Lasted a pretty significant amount of time aswell, especially for a character so popular.

Imagine what could happen if Jason Todd goes to meet Damian Wayne, Jason coming back is really good idea since its to remind Bruce that he didn't save Jason at time becoming the Red Hood, I like him having a team of Outlaws or Dark Trinity (the anti hero group of Jason) dealing with crimes in their way, is cool to see that slowly he is being acceptable as a part of batfamily but what confuses me is that they him a fully bad guy in the family battling against Tim Drake, Nightwing, Damian and others members of the batfamily and the other time he redeems himself saving Batman and not using guns anymore

Great takes on its repercussions, but I had to cringe at parts of how and why it happened. For starters, DC was looking for a marketing stunt with genuine stakes (i.e. something big enough to "matter" if it happened, but small enough to not rock the overall boat too much), yes, but 1988 absolutely was not a time in which "fans had too much power" outside of this one incident. In fact, DC editorial was obsessed with getting rid of fan favorite spin-off characters, so as to make their main heroes stand out more (most brazenly the removals of Supergirl and Batgirl, and a bit later the Green Lantern Corps, but the whole Crisis on Infinite Earths removal of alternate Earths was also done in part for the same reason), which together with Starlin's hate of Robin made him a natural choice. It was the marketing department freaking out about the lack of Batman's iconic sidekick that got us Tim soon after. As for why people voted to see Jason dead, some were trolling to see whether DC would actually do it, some were "mature" fans hating on kid sidekicks in general, some were fans of Dick's bitter about the first main continuity case (of at the time two, the other being the Flash) of passing a hero mantle, some were classists hating Jason for having stolen the Batmobile's wheels, and some were people specifically hating the abrasive thug and possible murderer that Starlin had turned Jason into, but I don't see anyone still having hated him for his prior universe version also having been the orphaned son of circus acrobats. On that note, Jason was originally created because the astronomical popularity of New Teen Titans was pulling Dick away from Gotham, but the Batbooks still wanted a Robin, preferably one they had full control over. Jason debuted as a character and even as Robin before Dick became Nightwing, and there was zero conflict about this on Earth-One between Dick and either Bruce or Jason. Everyone was being supportive of each other. (And Jason got extensively trained in both continuities, contrary to later revisionism.) Also, the creatives did misguidedly have Jason have an origin nearly identical to Dick's, which the latter actively pointed out in advance, in the hopes that this would make him more palatable/"believable" as a replacement, but they did originally give him a different hair color and a different costume to make him stand out as his own character until "marketing concerns" forced them to make him look exactly like a younger Dick for brand identity and the ability to seamlessly slot in reprints.

I think bringing Jason back as the Red Hood is a brilliant idea... One which I also hate. I adore the Red Hood but I'm sick and tired or him being gray and in the middle. Either be a full on villain or a hero, your development has been half baked for 20 years, Jason, please... Characters should be allowed to be gray but if Jason's meant to be Batman's Greatest Failure then please just make him a villain already, or if he's meant to be a redeemable hero, let him be redeemed.

I was there. Nobody was asking for it. Partly because it was still early into death having a revolving door, and Jason Todd, Bucky, and Uncle Ben were considered the Three Sacred Deaths in comics. (Nowadays it's just parental figures and some largely forgotten love interests.) His return was originally pitched for shock value and was lucky to then get an excellent execution. People did get cautiously excited, though, as DC baited, but chickened out at delivering in Hush, and were deservedly loving Under the Hood from day one.

Hot take but I think that Jason Todd was destined to become Red Hood regardless of whether he was killed by joker or not. Jason fundamentally had a different philosophy from Bruce at the get-go when he was adopted. I think he only stayed being Robin and following Batman’s moral code because Bruce was the only parental figure he had that wasn’t dead or a low life crook. I think his death by Joker only accelerated the process of him becoming Red Hood, but it would’ve happened eventually no matter what-similar to how it was inevitable for Dick Grayson to eventually become Nightwing

    • @TheTerrorNavigator
      @TheTerrorNavigator 3 місяці тому +16

Bonus hot take: I don’t like how in modern comics Jason is non-lethal. I feel like what was special about his character and what made him so different from the other Bat family members was that he didn’t follow the no kill rule-which made him so unique. I don’t have a problem with him being a part of the Bat family but I feel like he should take the more “love from a distance” approach as he handles crime the way he sees fit. I wish he was less of a vigilante and more of a mercenary hunting down criminal scum.
