This is so close to the recipe I brought when I immigrated from Cuba! Thanks for sharing! In my house we make the pastry from scratch. But in the states I usually buy it premade. This touched my heart. I now reserve these for special occasions and holidays. You’re incredible. Thanks again!
Thank you for being an inspiration to other Latinos and to those, in general, who love to cook! My husband is from Mexico, and I am Puerto Rican, Native American (Lenape), and Irish descent. Cooking is a passion and I enjoy your recipes! Thank you!!
Preppy Kitchen Your recipes are the best, thank you so much for them ! Whenever I bake something I check if you have a recipe for it. I made your cinnamon rolls for my moms birthday a few days ago and the whole family loved them, she’s expecting them every birthday now !
I love the beginning with the call to mom to help with the pronunciation when he's saying it right. I've been waiting for this recipe because in Puerto Rico this is also very popular, but we use confectionery sugar to top it up. Also this was my mom's favorite when she was alive. Thank you for the recipe!

I love how all the different countries have shared their pronunciation and flavors! It makes me wish I could travel to all of those amazing places to eat all the things.
Ugh, in México we use it too, also with ate de membrillo (quince jelly). My grandpa loved it! I can't eat it, for some reason the thoughts of combining salty cheese with sweet things irks me haha
What is the salty cheese called. Ive never seen this before and American Football is starting soon so I need something to bake for the game. Lets go Buffalo Bills!!
I love the guava paste just like that as well. Growing up in a Puerto Rican home we would eat guava with a piece of hard cheddar cheese on a ritz cracker. No judgment it’s delicious. Lol but these pastries that you made are delicious. They are my favorite dessert . My Mom used to make them as well.
I have looked for a handful of different recipes and always come back to this one. The extra additions to the cream cheese definitely a level up on flavor. The only thing I do different is I'm combined this with another recipe where when they come out of the oven you brush them with a simple syrup made of equal parts sugar and water. And then because I'm extra I sprinkle sparkling sugar over the top so it has a glossy crunchy sugar coat. I get these requested all the time when I do potlucks
in Brazil we have a similar version of these pastelitos that have the same name (pastelzinhos), the main differences are we don't use puff pastry and we actually deep fry them, but we keep the same filling, my favourite btw
Since you mentioned Argentina in this video.... these pastelitos are very similar to "Pastelitos de Membrillo" which are very common here in my country. The membrillo is a pear/apple-shaped fruit that you can eat directly from the tree but it is hard and taste like nooooothing but when it is transformed into for example jam, you actually want to eat it by the spoonful
As an official Cuban (I was born there, but left when I was 3), I give this video several thumbs-up. I live in California now, but when I go visit my folks in Miami, I can't get enough of these.
In Trinidad and Tobago we call it guava cheese, make it from scratch and eat it like a snack...yummy. However, using it in this recipe sounds absolutely delicious...love cream cheese and flaky pastry dough...will try it!
Pastelillos de guayaba!! Favoritos de mi niñez!!!🤗!!- childhood favorites!!!. That residual guava paste eat it with white cheese- casqutos de guayaba con queso blanco de hoja..yummy!!🇵🇷
John, these ARE easy and you make it look easy. As a rare baker, I am making these today and so thankful for your video and tips! They are turning out beautifully and taste amazing! A package of Pepperidge Farms Puff Pastry - not to be confused with Phyllo dough- has 2 sheets and I made 24 pastelitos. Excellent! Thanks for the guidance!
I've made these before in the past years ago and they are so delicious. I need to make them again they are so addicting. We call then empanadas de guayaba. My mother is Salvadorian and she also calls them pastellitos and they make some from Plantains stuffed with vanilla filling or black beans and others with beef and veggie similar to the Argentinan. I love guava so much I've made a guava chiffon cake, guava ice cream, these empanadas and guava tamales.
I grew up in Mexico City and the bakery near my house will bake this with a variety of fillings. deviled ham, bacalao, and guayaba your recipe brought back a lot of memories. I can't wait to try this delicious recipe thank you❤️❤️

Omg!!! I don’t think I’ve ever clicked on a video so fast! Lol I’m half Cuban but live in Texas and it’s so hard to find places that sell pastelitos!!! I’ve always been intimidated to make these because of the puff pastry. But now I don’t have to wait for my parents to bring us boxes from Miami haha I can make them at home!!!! 🎊🍾🎉
Hi! Just as an FYI, Vicky bakery here in Miami will deliver their pastelitos frozen, you keep them in the freezer until ready to use then you just bake them up. Porto's (the famous Cuban bakery in Cali) does that too 😋
@@sushimaster652 oh my goodness Vicky’s!!! Yesss those are my personal favorite from Miami. Wow thank you so much for that info, I would’ve never known!
Here in PR we also have them just with the sweetened cream cheese (quesitos), beef filling with a sweet top, chicken, chorizo, chorizo a la gabardina which is a spanish chorizo rolled (like pigs on a blanket) with a sweet outside (like corn syrup ish) those are to die for. Guava paste melted over brie cheese and nuts or edam cheese squares and guava paste cubes, omg it is so good.
John! These are a favorite around my household I can't wait to make these and impress them later on! Thank you for sharing your recipes are so easy (because of how well you explain) and delicious. Thank you!

OMG! John, you made me remember when I was little, my grandma made the dulce de guayaba at home. We had guayaba trees in the orchard in a little town called Bochalema, in Colombia. It was a heavenly smell at home when cooking the jam. So nice you bring this recipe! Thank you!
I got to be honest, John kills it in the kitchen. I've tried tons of recipes from online cooks, and it seems that John's recipes are the only ones that always turn out great. His food is amazing, he is amazing, everything is amazing!
Because I love guava, I bought one of those cans of guava paste. I didn't know what I was going to do with it but up here in midstate New York, we don't get a lot of guava products. Whenever I got off the plane in Hawaii, I'd go to the hotel, unpack and I wouldn't head for the beach, I'd head to the grocery store for 100% guava juice! ANYway, a few years after buying this paste it was reaching the end of its expiration date so I just opened it and tried it ... I think with crackers and cream cheese. Ugh, you're right. On its own ... not so good. Can't wait to try this!
Hi. I really enjoy your channel. I am Brazilian and guava paste is a very popular dessert served with cheese. But, there is always a but, cheaper guava paste has chayote (Sechium edule), xuxu in Portuguese, mixed into it. The lighter and sort of transparent it looks, the more chayote mixed in and the blander the flavor. Good guava paste is dark red and totally opaque. Even better if it has chunks of the outer layer of the fruit mixed in - the one you used seemed to have the chunks, but was very transparent. Keep on the great work though.
Love it! I don't know about Cuba, but in my country Puerto Rico, we top it with lots of powdered sugar, instead of granulated sugar. It looks awesome, it's one of my favorite pastries.
Wow, you nailed it John. I baked this today and we're delicious 🤤. I grew up in Puerto Rico eating this "pastelillos". In every corner in PR, there is a panadería, which sells fresh bread and sweets. This were and still my favorites pastries. We also have a variation in cilindrical shape made with only the cream cheese mix you made and called it "quesitos". Those are really good too. Also, we have another one with just guava paste and sprinkled with powder sugar on top. Thank you for your video..
Here in Brasil we love the combination of cheese (especially cheese from Minas Gerais) and guava paste (goiabada), we call it “Romeu e Julieta” (Romeo and Juliette) flavor. There are pastéis (not the same as pastelitos), folhados (like pastelitos), cookies, cakes, mousses, brigadeiros, ice cream, cheese cake, tapioca, seriously everything with this flavor! It’s soooo good ❤️ We also mix cheese with doce de leite (or dulce de leche in spanish) with cheese in some regions and is delicious!
Yum! I make these at Christmas time with our Cuban feast on Christmas Eve, Noche Buena. They're called Refugiados. ❤❤✌🏼❤❤ You should make the Cuban Pasteles de Carne too! Double yum!!!
iloe pastelillos, they are made in all spanish speaking countries, are origanlly from Spain. You can use any fruit jelly usually eat for breakfast with a cup of coffee.
Omg those look so good! Finally a reason to play around with puff pastry, and what a fun thing to bake for friends to try something new 😋 I came back to the vid to make sure I liked it and decided to comment to say thank you for another recipe for us bakers that wanna try more adventurous flavors! Just gotta find guava paste from another brand...

This looks delicious!! Thanks John!!
Those look soooo good! Thank you for not only sharing the "how to" vid. Also, thanks for including your Mom. She's such a nice, congenial person, and she's always a pleasure to see and hear. You're fortunate to have her!
Guava paste tastes really good with cheese and crackers. Or even just cheese. I like it with Gouda or cheddar. This pastry looks delicious.
Me encantan,y también con relleno de dulce de coco😋🇨🇺
They look awesome a must try
You are such a good baker!! I always follow your recipe!! They are never too sweet and never too salty!! Thank you 😊
yo amo los pastelitos de guayaba son mis favoritos aquí en Colombia los como todos los dias.
You just brought me back to my culture when I’d go visit family in Puerto Rico!!! 🙋🏻♀️👍🏼 thanks for sharing can’t wait to make this recipe 😇🥰
Tried this today and it turned out to be heavenly.. thank you for this awesome recipe.
Pastelistos de guayaba 🥰 me encanta
I made these just now and my husband and I loved them! My husband said he loves your recipes, John!
Love how you cared about pronouncing goiaba properly, the Brazilian in me appreciates that and yes, you nailed it 😊 this looks amazing!!!
I can definitely eat a whole batch in a few days .love guava one of my fruit
Love anything made with guave.
Pastelitos de guayaba
Más ahora que es época de guayaba en mi país y están deliciosas.
Greetings from Mexico 😊
In Puerto Rico once they're bake and cool powder sugar is sprinkle on top. I used guava and barbarian cream as a filler. They are so good. Thanks
John! These are a favorite around my household I can't wait to make these and impress them later on! Thank you for sharing your recipes are so easy (because of how well you explain) and delicious. Thank you!

I have tried so many version of puff pastry treats over the years but never tried this one. So excited to find something new to make 😍😍
OMG! John, you made me remember when I was little, my grandma made the dulce de guayaba at home. We had guayaba trees in the orchard in a little town called Bochalema, in Colombia. It was a heavenly smell at home when cooking the jam. So nice you bring this recipe! Thank you!
Pastelitos de Guayaba! Me encantan
Omg 😳 I can’t wait to make these pastelitos, they look soooo good. Thank you so much for the recipe. Blessings to you and your family ❤️
I got to be honest, John kills it in the kitchen. I've tried tons of recipes from online cooks, and it seems that John's recipes are the only ones that always turn out great. His food is amazing, he is amazing, everything is amazing!
Great way to say it! He does kill it in kitchen and brings me JOY 🤣 and calories that are so worth it!
I agree with your mom. Your pronunciation is perfect! And yes, we would love a puff pastry video. And that crunch at the end...
Made these today-so happy with the results. So delicious and fairly easy. Thanks so much for sharing your recipe!
I grew up eating these. Had no idea they were so easy. I’ll try baking them but I’ll definitely be using a different brand of guava paste.
GUAVA AND CREAM CHEESE ARE MY LOVE LANGUAGE 😍😍😍
In Puerto Rico we eat guava paste with cheddar cheese cubes and some ritz crackers it's so delicious! 😋 🇵🇷
Pastelitos! I love it when you present latin desserts! So yummy. I would also make them with dulce de leche!!
He is naturally so funny! Very big personality 👍🏻fun to watch and great recipes. Yum Yum😄can’t wait to try this recipe.
Your a wonderful human being love you and your personality ❤️
Wow, you nailed it John. I baked this today and we're delicious 🤤. I grew up in Puerto Rico eating this "pastelillos". In every corner in PR, there is a panadería, which sells fresh bread and sweets. This were and still my favorites pastries. We also have a variation in cilindrical shape made with only the cream cheese mix you made and called it "quesitos". Those are really good too. Also, we have another one with just guava paste and sprinkled with powder sugar on top. Thank you for your video..
Its Pastelillo de guayaba thats how we call it in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. I guess it depends where your from, but I must say i love the way you say it.
MzMacnamera 🇺🇸🇵🇷🥳🇺🇸🇵🇷🥳
I agree with you, life is too short for dry pastry! Give me the filling!
Yes you said it correctly! My favorite .. yum thank you for making
I’m Cuban! So nice to see this!
Try a thin slice of guava on a burger. It’ll change your life. ❤️
Guava and coconut cream, the combination is delicious!
My mom and I used to make these together all the time when I was a kid in Puerto Rico 😊
Yum! I make these at Christmas time with our Cuban feast on Christmas Eve, Noche Buena. They're called Refugiados. ❤❤✌🏼❤❤ You should make the Cuban Pasteles de Carne too! Double yum!!!
Divine! Qué viva la Guayaba!!
They look adorably delicious!!!
Rehan Ahmad 😊
iloe pastelillos, they are made in all spanish speaking countries, are origanlly from Spain.
