Hey guys. You have a very smart lady there.I like the way she thinks.I have been in the snack business since 1977. Buying in bulk is a great idea.I would like to add my 2 cents and suggest to buy in bulk and sell to other sari stores.That would save them so much time if someone supplied the products to their stores.This way you can buy in higher quantities and get the bulk prices.I believe it was J.Paul Getty who said "I would rather earn 2% profit from 100 people's efforts,rather then 100% profit off my own efforts" something like that anyway.Hope you like this idea and good luck

Well I must say I appreciate and respect the ambition of your wife as it reminds me of my own wife and how we got our business started. I'm glad she has a plan for the expansion of her business. never mind that it is a sari-sari store, but it is something of her own creation. now my curiosity is piqued so I'll be watching to see what direction she takes with the sari-sari store. this was a very nice video thanks for sharing and best of luck to you both.

Good for you Lot. Dream big. My mother started her business at the bottom. With her hard work from supplying fruit ice candy to street vendors, catering foods to family parties and corporate offices, she was able to save money to open a restaurant and mini grocery store. She didn't even stopped there, she even took whole lechon orders from people. My dad had his own sugarcane business but it was my mom's hard work that 6 of us siblings were able to finish college. Good luck Lotlot, I can see my mom in you, very determined to succeed.

Planning for the future is a good thing and it never happens overnight it takes time ..i helped our aunt with her store i bought 50000 peso worth of products for her store but all the money she made from it she didnt put it back into her store so now its a failing store ..lesson learned on that
Be determined, disciplined, and follow your dreams..great things will happen. If I'm ever in the AC area, I'll certainly come see your store. Best of luck!

I started my own business over 12 years ago after many years in the corporate world and have grown my business methodically. It was the best decision I’ve made in my life! I think the approach you shared makes a lot of sense. You have to look at your competition, figure out what makes them successful and replicate.. but also think about what makes you different or unique and make that your strength. All the best!

Thanks for the vlog guys. Sari sari must be a tough business....between the long hours, minimal profit and in some areas, so much competition for business. But it gives you something to do Brian and it's a great social environment to interact with your neighbours. It's great to see Lot has such a motivated and great grasp of the business world...well done!

Yup i agree with you Brian...my mom had a sari sari store before she was so nice making customer pay later when they have the money..
And also too much Credit on the Store..
In the end it got close down..Some of the customer that she trusted didn't pay anymore...
That's exactly what happened when I lend someone. Forget about getting your money back. That's Philippines. It happens a lot. People have no money to pay you back.

if i was going to open a shop in the Philippines it would be a rice shop. ( i'm marry to a Filipino living in N.Y. with our son) I thought about moving to the Philippines but I don't speak tagalog. so that's a major draw back.
we would sell rice and can food. a corner grocery mini super market.
1. shave ice and ice cream
2. bakery and baked goods.
3. mini hardware shop key making.
4. mini plant shop or flower shop.
5. party shop
6. liquor store.
7. mini toy shop
You dont need to speak Tagalog your wife employees can deal with customer public. That sounds like above average store with several employees. Sound like a mall grocery store at mall.
Location, target market for your product by demographics, suppliers and good staff and operations is key to any business. If you can nail that down in a simple business then its a great way to learn. There is always the key ?, what is your edge over your competitors it can be the above or the uniqueness of your product combined with the above.

You guys should do the expantion if your store is busy... my niece sari sari store in cebu is doing pretty good.. she sale a lot of beer, soda and rice... I'm planing on retiring in the Philippines someday ..

Hey Brian. The profit margin on goods sold thru a Sari Sari Store is very small. I wouldn't expand unless you have many many many regular customers.
Patient is the key of succes
Sari sari stores are considered as MIEs (Marginal Income Earners) by the Bureau of Internal Revenue or our local IRS in Philippines. New 2018 TRAIN Tax law have provisions regarding MIEs paying taxes Applicable only ONCE your Annual Gross Sales or receipts Exceed 100,000 pesos. Better ask around to be sure. Or its gonna be costly if you got hit or penalized by the BIR. Usually they do the initial checking during their Tax Mapping rounds 1 year after you get your Business Permit. Keeping a simple 2 column journal of your daily sales is for your own protection, if ever you got Tax Mapped or audited. Small sari sari stores owned by purely filipino couple or filipino name does not attract their (BIR) attention much.

Paperwork is proving to be a FAR more secure method for documenting than computers. Filing cabinets are usually faster than computers.
I worked before as a store purchaser it was actually a 3storey commercial store and I'm the one who handled the supermarket that has 15 counters,we open the store w/only a little bit of cash because everything we need was purchased thru credit line like nestle phils.procter/gamble,prc unilever all major companies are offering their credit line up to the smallest company were all credit lines. as long as you have the building and colaterals these companies will come after you to offer more products from them as long as there was no bouncing checques issued from you for they will hold all your stocks deliveries.

I noticed that there were some open lots on some of your walks, I thought that would be cool if you could get one, build a sari-sari store and have room to rent to bbq stands. Kind of a neighborhood food court. I remember that all paperwork was in triplicate, the Filipinos used carbon paper, I used to try to convince them that there was going to be a shortage of it. Kinda mean I guess, but it still makes me chuckle! Enjoy your posts, best of luck!

I bought a Sari-Sari store today in Zamboanga City through my Filipina girlfriend for 3,000php. The Mayor's permit 5,000php cost more than the store? I'm in the USA, she's running the store. I would post a picture, but don't see any options to do that. The store I bought has a lot of different kinds of rice and big bags of rice. Hope it works out. And of course........... "No Credit".

I am sure Lot Lot already has a handle on what her fastest moving items are. Sell off the slowest moving items, while increasing stock of the fastest moving items. Plus, I am sure there at least a few items her customers continually request that Lot Lot does not currently stock. Stock a few of those most requested items to see how fast they move.....just might become a permanent item. Great Job Lot!!! Wish you guys all the best.

Well I can say that the sari sari store is gaining money or the sari sari store is growing if after you less all expenses like electric bills, rent of your stall cable internet cost of your items your selling less all the expenses n if you money left fr all your income for the month after u less expenses then your gaining net income.
do you sell things the other sari sari stores dont? maybe that would make things better?
Filipinos are everywhere in this world yet most of us don't complain on whatever circumstance except when where at threat or being aggravated or in similar case. the bottom line here is that you are in-between above 2nd to 3rd developing country, to adopt and learn is a must or you might not survive the diversities of its culture considering the environment your at. Now sari sari store is a type of business not much but a good start and that depends on how you manage it. I knew where you both at, way back i run small scale businesses its tough but to survive is relieving and rewarding and if you succeed you championed life. I myself managed to survived in a western hemisphere country there are sour-grapes along the way including discrimination and yet for me everything are just part of the journey and so as to you, believe me.

We need some information about furnishings small space accommodation. it is becoming now a trend in NZ, Australia..,.. light space making high tech. Furniture,.. since you have just started your business,there were we called it the secondary accounts from these company,it was the panel truck who also offers a credit line for 1week some 2 weeks you just issue a postdated checks upon the delivery of your stocks that time you can operate your mini grocery w/no big capital,just improve your store make it wider and accesible to the customers and these companies might provide you a freezers for the frozen foods andsoft drinks.there were some small companies even offer a consignment basis meaning you just only pay that are only sold out and the remaining stocks can be replaceable for a new one.good thing if you can access them you can now offer a wholesale price..I've known all of these because when I've resigned to the store,I became a booking/collection sales representative to a company supplying different products to all groceries and supermarkets in that whole area handling the key accounts from 20k up to millions of credit accountd and the secondary accounts is below 10k credit accounts kung saan pasok ung business nyo. wish you more luck and success to your mini grocery to be who knows tru God's grace it will be like 711 in the future!..
The one thing I can say is your store place s not that busy sreet, so I suggest if tou have to move a busy place where many people will passers-by, so you may have more buyers.

im just glad we have a photo copier in our van, they cant make copies for you. out sony photo printer makes any size we need. ive also let many use our equipment when in town. Bank of Hong Kong serves us best, and corp. amex card.

I suggest that you guys buy stuff from the states and sell it here. I have friends who have family members in the states and they sell stuff that their family sent to them thru balikbayan boxes. You can also do the same thing. Also, you can send back filipino stuff to sell there.

Lot has the right idea. Find a way to buy your stock cheaper and you automatically make more money. Buying at low retail to sell at higher retail won't make much money.
In addition to that concern about profit it’s not really that much you gonna get I would say $40-60 box a day in a small sari sari store depends how big is the volume of your customers plus the cost each product you are selling , and it’s tough that kind of small business is like up and down and good luck both of you and your business
