      @@PickleballStudioI did wanna mention too, edge guards also make a paddle “stockier” so there’s more air resistance. So even with the same balance point, weight, etc etc an edgeless paddle should still swing faster than an edged paddle.

    Great pod guys. I’ve been maining Thompson UNI with a ton of success. You’re spot on about the softer feel than the twill. The low swing weight allowed me to load it up with lead tape and the performance jumps like crazy. I highly recommend weighting it up and giving it another shot.
    Quick point about the grip. This was my complaint too. I was able to take the original grip off pretty easily and throw a new one on.
    Also, interesting flow into the discussion on edgeless paddles. The weight of the urethane “edge” makes the sweet spot bigger than any other edgeless paddle I’ve hit

    I like the semi-western in tennis for your forehand but it makes for a junk backhand. Switch your grips at the baseline where you have time and go continental at the net.

    I agree with you that Edgeless paddles usually are not as good for most players as ones with an Edge Guard. The Selkirk Luxx (Epic Shape especially) though is an exception as it's pretty stable and has a good sweet spot. With lead/tungsten tape the Selkirk Luxx Epic is one of the best control paddles and very stable.

    - forehand to backhand grip change from the baseline should be automatic … if you hit sw forehand, change to cont before hitting backhand.
    - more extreme grips like sw came about in tennis because of higher bounces that had to be hit in higher strike zone and more out in front because of increased pace in modern tennis. Plastic ball tends to bounce low, which lends itself to cont and eastern forehand grip. A couple of places where you have higher strike zone in pickleball is volley serve and swinging volleys in transition zone. That said, I think it would be a hard case to make that any rec player needed to hit any fh with anything beyond eastern grip. Even on volley serve, strike zone below naval isn’t a high strike zone in tennis terms. Also … a sw serve will get you double pickled. Too soon? 😁
    - one thing good for a player (say right hander for this point) that hits a cont fh and a two handed backhand is no required right hand grip change. Cont/eastern (right hand continental, left hand left hand forehand eastern) is one of the more common two handed backhand grips.
    Steve appears to not be into paddle nerd talk. 🤣

    I enjoyed the podcast and made it to the kitchen. I have hit my drives with a continental and semi-eastern grip. I need to try out the eastern and semi-western grip to see how much movement/dip that I can get on my drives. I would like to see your video against Travis, Aizec. Aizec, you know that a decathlon is ten events, so Travis and you still need six more sports to do. On your 50th podcast, I would like to see Chris and Will playing a singles match. Chris has to play with a Z5 and Will has to play with a wooden paddle. Have a wonderful week.

    Our Cheetah Predion E20 edgeless paddle has a massive sweet spot, similar to the Selkirk LUXX Invikta. But, it is 30% less expensive and .5 ounces heavier. Plus, we provide 3 protective edge strips, so your paddle remains pretty.

  • @65atBestPB
    @65atBestPB 2 місяці тому

    Chris …
    About that “swing slower under control”:
    I would put it this way. If you ever played against good two handed backhand tennis players, good hard drives matching pace was the norm. But the one that always stood out was the one who could take pace off and hit a sharp dipping crosscourt. Turns out that control/touch shot with a lot of left hand touch is a much higher skill shot than the standard drive.
    A drill I used learning the tennis two handed backhand (2hbh) with a ball machine was hitting controlled touch cross court trying to land ball near sideline but inside service line. You can’t hit that shot unless you have mastered a lot of 2hbh basics, including being able to vary left arm/hand action. I already had a good looking 2hbh drive (good ball machine 2hbh, you find out that’s not always the same as match ready). This was one of the best drills (ball machine, practice partner better for most things) I did to improve my 2hbh. For example, I found this drill infinitely better than the common drill of hitting left handed forehands.
    I think in pickleball doubles where that 2hbh left hand control/touch helps the most in 2hbh cross court topspin 3rd shot drop. That shot is all control and touch, but with spin. To me, one handed backhand 3rd shot drops make more sense if not using spin.
    Post a link to that tennis video if you still have it … and I will watch.

    Don't forget about the Prodrive Encounter or the new Veloz paddles very good edgeless paddles, the prodrive is only 1 mph slower than the gearbox power pro per John Kews metrics. Also the new Gearbox ultimate huge sweetspot for edgeless paddle. Chris also try putting the lead tape in three different places on the handle, if you put it in the butt verses middle verses top of handle it changes the balance point differenetly.

    Also, I agree with your take on the balance point discussion even though I haven't tried a slyce cap yet...😂
    And finally, the 0.5g tungsten from PE is amazing. I have it double layered on part of my paddle (for the perfect balance) and it looks sooo clean

  • @CurtPrice
    @CurtPrice 2 місяці тому

    Pickleball Effect makes some tape specifically for thinner paddles and I've had it on my edgeless DBD Infinity from the start. It's thicker and way more durable than electrical tape. Great stuff. I haven't had a problem with the edge chipping or anything. Plus... that adds a little weight around the edge for stability. I also added a little lead tape.
    I have no issues with the DBD Infinity sweet spot with this setup. The spin is great too. But I wish it had more power. I really have to kill the ball on smashes and baseline drives to get the velocity I'm looking for, and even then it kinda feels like if falls short in that regard.
    Love the paddle otherwise though. Love it around the net.

    Chris, why the concern of how fast or slow a paddle “feels” when adding weight to the handle? As you said it’s perception. I’d be curious if you tested 2 paddles, one with a weighted up handle and faster “feeling” balance by recording both and looking frame by frame on how quick you actually swing it. Can a paddle feel fast and actually lower your response time even though swing weights are virtually the same?

    Adding lead or tungsten to the perimeter of an edgeless paddle can result in wider perimeter weight distribution than with an edgeguard because all of the added weight is beyond the dimensions of the paddle. The edgeguard is within the dimension of the paddle face, which means its weight is not as far out as weight added to the outside of an edgeless paddle.

    Edgeless paddles should be delisted, I don't think they are taking the sport in the direction we want it to go. It's not the way the originators wanted the game to be played. It was meant to be played with wooden paddles and an original whiffleball. Somebody is going to get hurt with an edgeless paddle because of the smaller sweet spot ..... the control is just not there. This will be the end of pickleball.

    Its amazing that the PPA is constantly trying to make the pro level game suited more for their typical old rich entitled demographic that just likes to spend hours dinking back and forth. The future of the sport is going to be dominated by ex-tennis players who will make the game faster and more entertaining to watch rather than watching molasses AKA dink battles

    But every racquet sport weaponizes the serve. People who says serves are just to start the game don't understand the game

    One more line on the court has to be the dumbest idea ever. Even for the pros.

    No Chris, “we”have not been complaining about paddles being too hot. On the courts I play on there are a couple weak @$$ whiners that would rather complain than build skill…….. but they are a very very small minority. The same types that don’t want anything to be allowed that makes the sport too difficult for them, want to cap power, spin, serves. They need a separate set of rules where serves are off a tee and you can request a do over if you lose a point. This game really is becoming the joke no-players have always said it was.

    A rule that requires adding an arbitrary service line to the literally thousands of existing courts around the world would be horrendous. That is how you hamstring and kickstart the demise of the country’s fastest growing sport.

      I don't think this is intended to be a permanent rule change, just PPA pros.

      @@padflash honestly that’s even worse. Imagine aspiring to get better at a sport that’s played with different rules than what you watch on TV. It would destroy the scene.
