Looking back I think you're right, I didn't catch that Scareclaw applies its effect once a monster is battled rather than on declaration (the only Kashtira monster I've ever used is Fenrir so I assumed they all worked the same when applying their battle effects). I am not super familiar with Kashtira rulings though so I could be wrong.

I've checked the ruling and people say so long as it remains faceup on the field it will still apply the effect unless it leaves the field
