I'm sure anyone would feel pretty similar if their beloved was thrown into a snakepit and tortured to death. Ivar simply wants to see him suffer - he's not curious about the pain, he's SAVOURING it because that man took his dad. And because he wants Aella to see his face. Making Aella watch Ivars smiling blood splattered face as he's carved open, as a Christian, was added torture. Just as Floki when he's smiling at Aella- it's not a happy smile per say. Brutal: The hot knife down the back then his skin being peeled off Hot: Seeing Lagertha sleep next to Astrid and Torvi Chilling: Ivar watching Aella's life drain from his eyes up close and enjoying it
The blood eagle was not just opening up the back, it was pulling the lungs out so they would inflate and deflate as the victim tried to breath without the aid of their diaphragm muscles.
The blade was sharp and swift the swings Which gave the king such lovely wings. And on that night the king hung high - his royal wings spread in the sky.

oldedude51 came close to the moment myself but pulled through. Vehicle crash. Pinned starting to burn. Accepted it and felt no pain. Likely from the shock but still no fear or pain. Was pulled from the wreck before suffering too many burns. Had a very large injury above my left eye to the top of my left ear from the windshield pillar folding downward and pinning me. Anyway mostly wanted to say when you havw determined that the moment has arrived, your body releases enough endorphines to grant you pain free passage. I lived through and the pain of daily burn dressing changes by far excedes any pain that a human should endure
The amount of pain resulting from this kind of damage to the nervous system will probably cause the dude to go into shock and pass out pretty quickly. Not a very quick death for sure, but the suffering is not as drawn out as some of the other types of torture humans are capable of.
Even this King's daughter and earlier episode told him father I don't think even we are truly ready for the wrath of Ragnar's sons are going to bring upon our Kingdom
The thing I enjoy most about the scene is that Aella killed Ragnar, who probably would have taken the offer of gold and silver over having him killed. But his children are a different story altogether and it's beautiful.
Ragnar had it planned, even though he would killed. He knew that once they heard about his death, his sons would come after Aella and avenge him, and that's exactly what happened.
Yea wouldnt have taken the offer of gold and silver if one of his loved ones were killed. Jarl borg threaten to kill his family and he got blood eagled. If a Christian was to kill one of his loved ones he’s getting blood eagled without a doubt

Poor Ælle. When you think about it, all he actually did was try to defend his kingdom and his people from invasion. The TV show made him out to be a complete dick but in real life he could have been a decent and honourable man who was simply doing his duty to his people
History is written by the victors. Unfortunately we can go in circles forever and no matter what, both sides will feel justified in their actions and hurt by the others. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind
Yeah, Aella was a world class dick. He ordered the murder of norse women and children living in the little villages set up along the English coast while the men were out fighting. It was supposed to demoralize them and make them want to leave. Thank the Gods he got what was coming to him.
I just watched Valhalla. The greenlanders were dope but there's nothing like getting the old gang back together! This show always does a great job with depicting culture and a highlight of that is how they depict religion and a culture/religion clash.
No sure and Aelle was in the right to kill Ragnar, tough thing is the sons have full right to avenge their father. From their side it was not right, spec not a death like that. Also Aelle was a horrible person. He killed one of his lords for nothing, treated his daughter like shit, was disrespectfull and so on
@Jim Halfpenny I love Ragnar as a Character, but for his actions, he deserved it. Pretty much all of the characters in Vikings are horrible people (just like how powerful people usually are irl) which Is why I can root for a ruthless bastard like Ivar without reservation)
I'm behind several seasons but I'm actually hoping Floki gets killed off,he dishonored Ragnar several times and neverd fully payed for it.im also hoping the crippled plan gets killed off,he just annoys me
Jeff Evans Floki never did that, he was always loyal to Ragnar. Even when he killed Athelstan - it was out of love for Ragnar and to stop him from becoming christian.
People just tend to feel more positive thoughts and emotions about someone's death when it's someone you hate or you think deserved it. Ragnar's sons decided that Aella would pay for executing their father by giving him the same fate, according to their customs. Aella was begging, blubbering and just about shitting his pants before they killed him. He realizes that his offer of riches wasn't going to work, and yes, they were going to kill him, and he is absolutely petrified.
Brutal scene. But the actual setting of it is so beautiful. The forest, the rain, how grey and dreary everything looks. God, I hate Summer so much. I want to live where it’s cold and rainy like this all year.
Remember though the blood eagle was more of a gruesome display than a means of execution. You'd die long before the got to the lungs. Either from blood loss, shock or asphyxiation
If someone murdered my father, then offered me gold or silver....it’d be an insult. They’d surely die a brutal death then. My fathers life is worth more than any gold or silver. And if they take me as someone who would treasure that more than my father, that’s a double insult.
I’d take the gold and silver….. then do what I was gonna do anyway. Let them feel the insult of being given false hope and lost treasure then their excruciating demise.

Floki and Ivar had such a lovely for Ragnar. It's not just Ivar watching like a serial killer- he specifically wants his "heathen" face and smile to be the last thing the Christian King sees. His smile is more ... Soaking up the justice of avenging his father and watching the man who did it perish. I'm sure anyone would feel pretty similar if their beloved was thrown into a snakepit and tortured to death. Aella underestimated a Vikings pure rage.. think that's the scariest Flokis been in the entire series. They're furious. And they're gonna revel in ending the man who ended the man they love.

oldedude51 came close to the moment myself but pulled through. The amount of pain resulting from this kind of damage to the nervous system will probably cause the dude to go into shock and pass out pretty quickly. Not a very quick death for sure, but the suffering is not as drawn out as some of the other types of torture humans are capable of.

Moral of the story: Don't kill a legend. (Ragnar).
Especially when he has many sons.
When the blood of the king splatters on Ubbes face he smiles. That is memorable.
I have waited so long for this moment

The craziest part of this scene for me is that you can actually hear the hot knife whistle as it cuts through his back 😵
To depict the evils of mankind in such a realistic way just goes to show you how amazing the actors were. It was both brilliant, and horrifying.

Poor Ælle. When you think about it, all he actually did was try to defend his kingdom and his people from invasion. The TV show made him out to be a complete dick but in real life he could have been a decent and honourable man who was simply doing his duty to his people
We never really got to see things from Aelle’s perspective bar a few occasions. The show chose to present things from the Viking’s perspectives.
History is written by the victors. Unfortunately we can go in circles forever and no matter what, both sides will feel justified in their actions and hurt by the others. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind
@@lucaswilliams2292 Well, the show is called "Vikings", so... Yeah.
According to Anglo-Sacon records, yeah he was a dick.
Yeah, Aella was a world class dick. He ordered the murder of norse women and children living in the little villages set up along the English coast while the men were out fighting. It was supposed to demoralize them and make them want to leave. Thank the Gods he got what was coming to him.

The greenlanders were dope but there's nothing like getting the old gang back together!
This show always does a great job with depicting culture and a highlight of that is how they depict religion and a culture/religion clash.
People seem to forget that it was the Vikings who attacked Aellas kingdom. Not the other way around.

Am I a soulless bastard for smiling and being overjoyed of this death in particular? I just reached this segment for the first time.
Yes.
it's worth it
People just tend to feel more positive thoughts and emotions about someone's death when it's someone you hate or you think deserved it.
Either from blood loss, shock or asphyxiation

stuff of legends...
"I've been told your God is a carpenter, well guess what,so am I."
That line and his look scared me.
