I like how we're seeing Ubbe come into his own, we see that he isn't as passionate about raiding as Ivar and Hvitserk are.... he has Ragnar's curiosity.
χρονης κ. I know right, a mindless brute who loves his raiding. I'm a bit disappointed that he's such a flat character, I hope the writers develop him more.
Last Baratheon, Ubbe looked sick to his stomach after seeing the brutality of Ivar.Dude we are really going to miss Ragnar. So I see in the trailers for next show,Ubba in Kattegat, seemingly trying to put down an attack from Harald. Historically ,Ivar was said to have been very cruel, but pouring molten metal down a mans throat??? Ugly man, real ugly.
The scene is the exact opposite of the ransacking of the church in season one, and it feels like partway through Ubbe comes to his senses and remembers who he really is and who his father was, even tho he obviously wasn't at the raid in season one. It really sets up a lot of unspoken emotional conflict in Ubbe and shows how Ivar has become the furthest thing from what his father actually was.
Ubbe is like Ragnar....Ubbe doesnt want to just run around killing and rampaging all of his life. He wants to settle down and live in peace. Ragnar in his heart was a farmer who wanted better land and opportunity for himself and his people. I think Ubbe thinks the same way.
ny_kia31 they both understood that there people would not have much of a future if they just raided sooner or later they would just die and leave nothing behind where if they settled land they could start kingdoms and rule but this scene shows why a lot of vikings couldn't be conquers they didn't really think in the long turn witch is the end for them
Ragnar actually spent more time with Ubbe than with Ivar. When they were young he would play around with the other kids while Ivar was always with his mother. And Ragnar took both Ubbe and Hvitserk with him to Paris for months when they were young. The only time he really spent with Ivar was his last trip back to England.
Taimoor Shah Ragnar was a addict then and they were just boys. But Ivar spent months with his dad on their journey to England and his final words to him were to be ruthless and that's what he's doing. If the vikings never conquered most of England then they never would have been able to settle it and become a part of it sooner or later England would have killed them or subjected them just like they've done countless times though history
Nathan Schneider So what if he was an addict? He still interacted with them. And apart from that, what about the years he spent with them at home when he wasn't raiding? Ubbe obviously learnt a lot from him, that's why he was the only one to track Floki down when he tried escaping. In the end they still lost eventually, even after all the raiding. Alfred beat the Vikings, and Ivar the Boneless disappeared from history soon after.
I love how Ubbe is contemplating this entire thing, Vikings were brutal and barbaric and he’s just like observing like whoa wait a minute! This shows some more character I like it!
remeber vikings is not a culture it is a specific role in medieval scandinavian culture. And the scandinavians were just as brutal when invading as every other country at the time, and when it came to their own people they were much more civilsed and avanced (they had some degree of democracy, women's rights...)
I like that Ivar and Ubbe seems to represent certain aspects of Ragnar. With Ivar representing his ruthlessness and Ubbe representing his softer and curious side.
Ragnar seems to an extent to have his ambitions and character traits split among three of his sons. Bjorn inherited his desire to see more and more of the world, not just raiding places they knew but continuing to discover, and understanding other cultures just how Ragnar sought to understand the Christians. Unfortunately he also inherited Ragnar's lack of interest in settling down with a family, neglecting his children and Torvi. After a time, he even, just like his father, lost all interest in being king of Katekat. Ubbe wants to build a new life for his people and views a different future for the Vikings, just like Ragnar. One which does not involve the need for raiding. He also has Ragnar's compassion, although in this area he often surpasses his father. He feels duty bound to preserve Ragnar's legacy, which is rather interesting as he looks just like him. Ivar wants to achieve fame like his father, and even surpass it. He is incredibly ruthless just like his father and willing to break whatever rules he needs to in order to achieve his goal. He is also an incredibly imaginative thinker, making him rival Ragnar in strategy. And I just realised. Hvitserk takes after Rollo. Not because he betrayed his family because whether or not he's a traitor is up to interpretation. However, his reasons behind his actions are the same. Hvitserk left Ubbe's side, despite believing him to be in the right, because he was tired of living in Ubbe's shadow, just as Rollo was tired of living in Ragnar's. It's why he went with Bjorn to the Mediterranean, to gain fame away from Ubbe. So when Ubbe was falling out of favour with the great army, for Hvitserk, going with Ubbe meant he would be living in a shadow of a shadow. With Ivar he had a chance to be something important, a motivation he fleshes out later, knowing Ivar can't have children, so he and his children would inherit Katekat.
At 2:49 When Ubbe grabbed and looked at that Person up and down it wasn't just like a Viking type head movement.... He was Scanning this Person for a weapon to figure out if these people were warrior's or not. Didn't see a weapon so he let him go.
Ivar is being exactly what his father told him to be in the end ruthless. He's not straying from anything his father told him that his mind and his anger was a gift and that happiness was nothing. I believe that Ivar is being exactly what his father told him to be and Ivar knows it.
This is why ubbe is my favourite character. He's a badass viking warrior who on the battle field is borderline unstoppable. But he dosent kill those who are unarmed or unable to defend themselves. He's a warrior not a barbarian
Hvitserk is always having the time of his life whenever he's fighting. He's such a badass fighter. And he's always smiling or laughing while doing it. My boi really goes full berserker. So underrated. Favorite character🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️
Björn and Ubbe were by far the most similar to Ragnar. Sigurd is unfortunately diffficult to judge based on how little screentime he had and both Ivar and Hvitserk were just bloodthirsty brutes during raids.
I did some archaeological digging one time in York. The objective was to get down to the Viking layer. There's now a great exhibition about the Vikings in York. It's worth a visit.
If they didn't want to die unarmed... they should have armed themselves. Christians killed unarmed people all the time. They exterminated native peoples wherever they went and took whatever they wanted....in the name of God. So, what's the difference? It depicts Christians being killed... like they themselves killed others. Read about the massacre at Sand Creek. The Crusaders slaughtered everyone non Christian in Jerusalem . The USA went to war with Mexico just to take what is now most of the western states. Read what the USA did to the Phillipines, hunting and exterminating " unarmed civilians". The Tokyo fire bombings of civilians killed more than both Atomic bombs combined.. The WW II bombing of Dresden civilians. Great warriors ? " The axe forgets, the tree remembers"
I've lived in york my entire life, we have ALOT of history here, as well as ghost sightings (york is said to be the most haunted city in England). we actually have something called the "Jorvik Viking centre" which shows what york was like when it was "Jorvik" which was what the Vikings named it (during the roman period it was called Eboracum). so yeah, if anyone is super interested in English history I would recommend visiting :) (plus our city is associated with harry potter due to the shambles and the train station hehe )
Jorvik is very good. I visited back in the mid-1990s and was very pleased. York is a place where you feel the history and it also had some of the best fish and chips I have ever had!
3:10 Hvitserk seems to be a bit of a weirdo. Poor Ubbe has to deal with not just one but two pervers brothers lol... I'm curious about Hvitserk's role in this season as he has been a side character so far. We basically don't know his motivs and ambitions yet.
Hvitserk was a psychopath, Ivar was a ruthless and tough s.o.b and he kicked him out of York because he was on some other shit, torturing people for fun and all that, all around sadistic motherfucker, hope they keep that storyline in the show, with this battle they at least showed his enjoyment in killing and raping.
In the scene before this, Ivar and the other sacrifice the children that gave away the information. Said scene was cut from the US airing of the episode, though I do not know if other locales had similar censorship.

Was he really tho? Ivarr is up there with the most famous, but I have trouble seeing him as anymore famous than some of his brothers like Björn or Sigurd, as both of them were established as kings in Sweden and Denmark respectively and each set up dynasties that would be powerhouses for centuries. Specifically Sigurd who’s descendants for a time ruled both Denmark and all of England and managed to stay in power in Denmark for about 600 years. Even guys Harald Fairhair and Leif Erikson I’d say have just as much of claim to fame with Harald being the first king of Norway and Leif discovering America. Don’t get me wrong Ivarr and later his descendants certainly made a large impact, but in the grand scheme of things I feel he was a bit less important than pop culture (especially this show) tries to play up.
This siege of York was pathetic getting on the walls with some ladders then 1 person just strolling frew to open the gate's?? What happens to the days wen they attacked paris with the intense battle music that was epic
As Jan state above, this was surprise attack conducted on a day when everybody literally went to the church and the guards were drunk, and hence unprepared. This wasn't a siege to begin with either way....it was more likely a massacre.
@@Jow2002 I know this is a year old post, but the crusades was a reactionary movement after centuries of Muslim invasions in Christian land. Spain, France, North Africa, and the Byzantine Empire. Just like what happened in the Northern Crusade against the Native Prussians, it was a reactionary movement after the Prussians were raiding Poland. Crusades were not motivated purely on killing non Christians rather than to stop non Christians from invading Christian land.
Well I wasn't expecting that slaughtering at the end. I can understand it with soldiers, but killing just unarmed civilians that way... Damn, I really hate vikings now XD
Daniel Orderique not judging anyone, but I think its wrong to show innocent murdering in this way, like its something 'cool'.. Only because they are Christians.. But you know what? While you sit in your home and watch this show there are christians dying right now in middle east and Africa, this show has no respect..
Well I have to say if they put as much time & effort into defending their ridiculously low walls as they did praying they might have stood a much better chance of survival.
guys attacking villiages like this is how settlements and kingdoms were made outside of trade which came later on for the vikings it was survive or conquer
The beginning of their end, begins here, without Floki, in a cowardly battle in a small town, so much waste of enegry, just to remind the Saxons they are scary!
York was one of the most important towns back then and waste of energy? makes no sense because they can simply regain it because they have their own town now. Someones pretty pissed about the saxon casualties I think
Well yea kinda. Both sides are showed in a way that you can route for. The Vikings do savage stuff but the christians are also shown to do bad stuff. Besides this just feels normal to them and was common around the world. Btw the main character Ragnar was not really into this stuff
Tough the one laughing over the guy on the floor is Ivar, who is clearly set to be a evil sadistic shit. He killed a boy when he was like 6 over a fucking fotball
Jakcao Omah nope! Hvitserk raping a nun and Ivar poring hot gold down a priests throat. Plus they sacrificed those 2 boys after they found out how many days till Sunday. They burned those little boys alive. The only one that has a heart is Ubbe.
@@dartagnan3 How ? Ubbe legit just went into Holmgang so the saxons dind have to fight them and blood be spilled... Ubbe is legit bf with Alfred and the reason they can work with the Danes now.... Lagertha was gf with Alfreds last bodyguard and commander... Bjorn, well he aint hostile... Only Ivar is enemy with Alfred and Bjorn is gonna kill him.. As said if the writing is good what i said will happen and then Bjorn will make peace with Alfred and retire in the mountains as a rich man surrounded by Warriors to guard him... Tho the Black Danes might actually come and help Bjorn and Ubbe ageinst Ivar before so...
Oh yeah, no need to be on your guard when on guard duty. I mean it's not like there's a huge fucking army of vikings marching through the country...OH WAIT!
looters, pillagers and raiders.... They took their share in history, they even left a mark. But aside of what they say about their advancements they will always be a raiding nation. Even if we admire today's Scandinavia.
The British Ancestors enjoyed a plunder of village and Slaughtered their people from 1000 year ago......British Ancestors was surely different the Roots compare with other Ancestor.
As a guy who loves his history York is a goldmine it since it existed it has had 4 names the Romans established it as Eboracum the Saxon named it as Eoforwick the Vikings named it as jorvic and we call it York in modern terms it was also the insperation for new York also the Roman empire was the capital city of where he chooses and leader Constantine was announced emperor of the empire at york there is a monument celebrating this York has always been northern England's capital city and for key logistical reasons mainly against the Scottish who are my ancestors

Ragnar and Floki are --were the show. We sorely miss them
Prob because it was pairs and this was a random town on the river which the vikings took by surprise on Sunday.
As Jan state above, this was surprise attack conducted on a day when everybody literally went to the church and the guards were drunk, and hence unprepared. This wasn't a siege to begin with either way....it was more likely a massacre.
Yeah, you guys are such proud warriors attacking helpless civilians.
Lets not pretend that Christians did not go on crusades and kill tons of people over religion.
@Kristoff Bjorgman this dude is on multiple videos defending these murderous bastards
@@adlersadie1579 I've see him; really annoying and cringe.
@@mobius77x52 stole the Words right out of my mouth
Well I wasn't expecting that slaughtering at the end. I can understand it with soldiers, but killing just unarmed civilians that way... Damn, I really hate vikings now XD
At least they didn't use some imaginary figure for an excuse...
@@jakubwroblewski7261
they did
they were pagans
Everybody badass until bishop heahmund appears.
People judging vikings by present standards is hilarious
Daniel Orderique not judging anyone, but I think its wrong to show innocent murdering in this way, like its something 'cool'.. Only because they are Christians.. But you know what? While you sit in your home and watch this show there are christians dying right now in middle east and Africa, this show has no respect..
@Turok Hilsen clearly your "knowledge" about the history of Christianity is totally bias
@@tomas5244 Holy shit your dumb af
@@tom71619 doesn’t proceed to elaborate
Battle for york? Battle??.. Seems to me more like innocent murdering
It was the same when Charlemagne's armies killed thousands of innocent people just for not being christians.
@@kishanchali8752 Yes true, but I think he just wanted te say than it's just a massacre, not a battle
For me the worst part of this was the little boy crying after all. I hope that he wasn't murdered, and a person take care of him.
Ubbe leader is afight warriors yeah my fovorite brother ubbe
Well I have to say if they put as much time & effort into defending their ridiculously low walls as they did praying they might have stood a much better chance of survival.
Blame the Romans for those walls since they built them 800 years previously.
hvitserk is like rolo, crazy as fuck with low brain
ubbe is a toned down version of ragnar
Ivar is the mix of ragnar's brain and floki's craziness
Got their cummupance in 1066 Stamford bridge.Viking army virtually wiped out.
guys attacking villiages like this is how settlements and kingdoms were made outside of trade which came later on for the vikings it was survive or conquer
2:16 hvitserk: BOO!
loving ivar fuck yes
The beginning of their end, begins here, without Floki, in a cowardly battle in a small town, so much waste of enegry, just to remind the Saxons they are scary!
York was one of the most important towns back then and waste of energy? makes no sense because they can simply regain it because they have their own town now.
Someones pretty pissed about the saxon casualties I think
I’m from York ....it didn’t go down like this 😳😂
How did it go. Because im sure you from York know the truth and wont lie to seem to better off
Floki can make chariot
Sure he can make a weapon that can break any big castle door .
Ivar is perfect love from Türkiye:)
Hel I adore Ivar and Hvitserk
I have Amazon prime but I can't watch s5, do I really need to pay some more for season 5?
ivar's evil laugh💥👍
2:47..one miracle!!
My favorites ivar and hvitserk & Rollo comment your favorite
So these guys are the protagonists? You're supposed to root for the Vikings?
At this point they are really making the Vikings in the army more villainous so we can start to root for the Saxons under Alfred and Lagertha
3:55 Ivar is the medieval joker
Oh yeah, no need to be on your guard when on guard duty. I mean it's not like there's a huge fucking army of vikings marching through the country...OH WAIT!
Perfect scene
Damn, did they sack York or what?
looters, pillagers and raiders....
They took their share in history, they even left a mark.
But aside of what they say about their advancements they will always be a raiding nation.
Even if we admire today's Scandinavia.
How is this a battle there is like 5 guys defending
Us brits a warrior nation
lmao i’m from york. it’s where the name new york comes from
"Battle"??
this is fucking awesome.. the sack of York
Where is bjorn?
The British Ancestors enjoyed a plunder of village and Slaughtered their people from 1000 year ago......British Ancestors was surely different the Roots compare with other Ancestor.
Ivar is psycopathic monster
Ubbe remaineds me of jon snow in the battle of king’s landing if i could call it a battle
Ubbe is wondering if any of this is right.
we need more of ubbe...
How can you christians watch this and not get pissed They took it to far
@TRP Don't end si Well for them.
Christians were equally bad at that time in the history. It wasn't only the Vikings, who did this.
3:14
Too bad Ubbe didn’t side with Ivar and then finally have an epic showdown between Ubbe and Bjorn. They hinted at it a lil bit in the beginning
Im just now getting into the show. Is there a reason why the crippled brother decided to pour molten metal down the priest's throat? Or does he just enjoy being a sadist?
i thought so. thanx
Darkest Knight he was raised by a zealous pagan who hated Christians and his father was killed by them.
Doesn't look anything like York or the Roman/Saxon defences.
Hey it's me
1:25
3:11 lookingup nuns skirt
Anybody else from York here?
The stars of the show are the bad guys slaughtering defenseless women and children.
The villagers die with honour
