I accidentally planted like 300 punmkins this year when I was trying to fertilize my new grass in backyard...and I forgot I had tossed all our Halloween pumpkins in our compost...after watering my grass for a couple days I realized little baby pumnkins popping up literally everywhere in my new beautiful grass. I plucked them all out and transplanted them over in a more appropriate area for em and theyre happy as can be. So I've got a very unexpected unplanned pumnkin patch this year and hopefully some will pollinate and grow some good happy pumnkins this year
Omg! I nearly snarfed the water I was drinking as you mentioned using bras and about being optimistic by going with a double D!!! I LOVE your humor and appreciate the candid, honest, and detailed way you make your educational videos! I'm guessing you and your wife would get along really well, if not become good friends, with my hubby and I if we knew one another in real life. If my garden was in my backyard, I'd actually try your bra hack out with a few of my old bras😂. Instead, I bought a few yards of fabric on Amazon. It is labeled "solid stretch power mesh fabric". It is similar to the skin toned material you'd use on dance or ice skating costumes to make costumes appear skimpier/sexier while still covering the body with a slightly sheer material that mimics skin. I cut it into wide strips to support larger fruits/veggies that I'm trellising or to protect fruits/veggies/plants from animals, bugs, excessive sun exposure, and from the cold. The material is kinda like a combination of a semi-thick tight and a micro mesh netting.
Thanks for including the drip installation in the video. Crazy that we just moved into a new build home and to my dismay recently discovered that the soil here is like solid clay with tons of intermixed rock. So I will have to grow everything in raised beds and pots and will need to run a lot of drip lines off the 3/4" irrigation tubing the builder put in. Didn't even think about investigating the soil when we were house shopping--surrounded by orchard and vineyard so assumed it was prime growing area 😏. So your videos on irrigation (and everything else) are truly a godsend! Thank you!
Thanks for the video! I planted pumpkins for the first time this year. And that irrigation tool! 😍 I’m definitely going to buy one of those. I appreciate the helpful information! PS I’ve also used tulle in my garden for years! (Used it to protect my apparently delicious sweet potato vines just yesterday.)
I have good luck putting a bucket with the bottom cut out around my squash. I also do that with tomatoes. It seems to get them off to a good start. I don't know if they are warmer, or why it works. I imagine it wouldn't stop squirrels, but I haven't had an issue with them in the garden.
I grew pumpkins once, here in Alaska. I used the pantyhose. They worked great. They were off the ground. We still have a couple of feet of snow here. We have such a short growing season here. Last summer was cold. Everyone had small vegetables and fruit. Hopefully, we'll have a better summer. My daughter is excited to do some gardening with me. We're going to start them inside in about a week, when we're able to get what we need. ❤
This is great! Im growing my pumpkins, spaghetti squash and melons vertically. I think I'll add mulch around the base to each one after watching this. Thanks so much for the tips!
You saved my garden with that one comment about planting seeds vertically. I live in Florida, we have heavy rains, And my large seeds frequently rot. Now I know why.
The fact that pumpkins spread out and need a lot of space isn't a down side because you can take advantage of that to use that to cover plants that don't like full sun.
Planted my starts last month and I'm sure glad to get your tips. I need to feed them today when I water. I am going to look into drip system as this watering by hand is getting harder to do at my age, 76. Thanks for your helpful tips.
I did a soaker hose on a timer this year throughout my raised beds. This is the first year I've not done it by hand. Seems to be working well so far. I just go out and prune and look for pests and get to skip the hour of watering. It's wonderful so far!
Lol funny guy! My sister an I were just talking about the lack of panty hose for tying up plants. Bras just dont cut it, unwires can wreak havoc! The things you dont know to think about. Happy Punkin gardening Brian! Love your laughter!
Too much fun to watch your videos! One day, when I have the chance to have a garden, it will be so productive because of your teachings! The bra!!! lol
My garden grow area is just under 700 sq ft. I've gotten creative in how and what I can grow. This year, I have adopted your idea for tomato tellis.. and using that for the cuc's as well. I also decided to take a stab at sweet pumpkins. Not having real estate, I went with pots.. big ones (25 gallons). Started them indoors.. transplanted with quality soil and they are doing fantastic. Just need to build a trellis.
Love your comments especially about the bra lol. Great information. Thank you for that officiary plan and pumpkinson four corners of my raised bed with the corn. It came up early quick this year to per corner
FYI. Took mint that I pull up constantly. Stripped the leaves n topped off my mulch on my peppers n tomatoes. I was being overrun by insects. Insects gone. Since I have tons of the stuff. Gonna use it a lot.
Where were you 6 days ago, when I planted melons. I alway wondered why people planted in hills. Glad to know that I don't have to do that in SC. Thanks for the tip about the fabric covering.
I’m excited for pumpkins! I’ve always forgotten the right time to plant. Now I’m finally going to get those jack be littles on the trellis in time for Halloween 🎃
Lol, double D, it might be better with an H. That was really funny. Tulle is great for protecting plants. You can get it from the dreaded Amazon as well. I learned that trick from a UA-camr who does container gardening in California to keep squirrels out of her vegetables.Who knew something as inexpensive and very fine would deter small animals.
It's almost like bras were purpose-built for supporting melons 😂. Love the video, especially the tulle. I will probably get some of it up on my tomatoes tonight.
Perfect I have spaghetti squash and Japanese pumpkin, (Kobacha) seedlings to plant out. Our weather in the Monterey bay is just like yours. Love the drip system tool.
I planted 11 pumpkins six from transplants that I started indoors and five from seed. I think I’ll go get some smaller ones and add in between because mine are 5 feet apart.
My soil temperature will never be 65 degrees, not even close. I’m glad I saw this video before I transplanted out my winter squash. I guess they’ll stay in the greenhouse and fight with the zucchini! Thank you for a timely post.
We have a volunteer pumpkin plant that sprouted up in our DG, next to a flower bed. We didn’t know what kind of plant it was until last week when we saw the first baby pumpkin starting to grow. The vine is huge and I spotted 3 pumpkins so far. If I had known it was a pumpkin vine when it popped up, I would have transplanted it to a better location!
omg - I didn't even THINK of tulle!. And I sew a lot, lol! I've been looking at the different options online for garden protection fabric and it's all just too expensive. Think I'll head off to my local JoAnnes and get a bolt. Excellent tip! I'm growing pie pumpkins and Sugar baby watermelons in the 28g galvanized tubs from Tractor Supply. I've had minimal success in the past with either in ground or in containers, but I've given them a little more space this year and I'm hopeful. The bottle gourds and zucchini I've planted in them are going wild, lol. I've used a modified hugelkulture method in the tubs. I drilled 4 holes in the sides at the level of the first indented ring on the tub (about 3-4" up from the bottom), then filled with punky wood to just above the holes, then filled the rest of the way with container soil. The tomatoes love it as the roots go deep enough to get to the wet wood. It doesn't really help the shallow rooted plants so much, but the soil does stay more moist when it gets hot. Now I just need to figure out a trellis system to use with them for the melons, pumpkins and gourds...
So, am I correct in thinking that you planted the melons and the pumpkins in the same patch? That will work, will it? Thanks so much for all the tips and tricks. I love the tulle idea.
Brian, you're hilarious LOL!!! Will you do a video on container pumpkins? All of my crops are in independent containers, so I'm always trying to figure out how to get away with growing plants that need space in pots.
If only you had posted this one day sooner. I planted mine all wrong yesterday. Oh well, next year I will do it correctly. This year I'll just have to cross my fingers.
I love your channel and I am learning so much it is making me very excited about gardening. I live in a very windy area but like the idea of growing watermelon off the ground. Do you or your followers have any suggestions on how to build a wind proof structure? The wind out here is strong enough to snap a 2x3
Another idea to support the mellons/squash on a trellis... net type bags that oranges or onions come in. I used this netting to support butternut and acorn squash. Would use a twist-tie.. always would grab a few extra from the produce when I went shopping.
Oh Brian what have you done to me I need some of them pumpkins now lol I'm UK so going to do a search to see what I can get but so excited so thanks 😁 sorry I've missed loads I been stressing no rain hosepipe ban 😔 fab vlog Brian 🥰
Thank you for the tips and laughs😂😂😂😂, I'm going to plant mines as soon as I get a net like that. It already has grown like 3 inches! I need fertilizer so, we get a lot of rabbits here so I can't plant her until I get the netting!
I planted 3 pumpkins but have found some volunteers which I'll let grow where they are since there is room. Last fall I composted some pumpkins and I guess there were seeds in it that were viable because I got volunteers. Not sure what kind they are. I guess I'll have to wait and see.
Those blue/blueish pumpkins are so pretty. Not enough sun here to grow melons, which is a bummer. Tulle (pronounced "tool") is so useful in the garden. Better to grow Double-D melons than to have to wear them! 😆
Thank you. Can I remove the seeds from the pumpkin I got at the farmers market three weeks ago? Can I waut and remove thwm when I cut my jack-o- lantern? Hiw do I store the seeds for the winter?
I have a relatively small garden and always plant my pumpkins next to the driveway and then I train the vine down the edge of the concrete. They love the reflected heat and it doesn't take up any valuable garden real estate!
Hi I’m in Southern California, are you base out here too? I’m looking to grow pumpkins. When would be the best time to start seeds? You planted in June, can they be planted earlier or should I wait till June as well? Thank you
Hi Brian! Why black netting or whatever you called it? Could it be any color? Thanks P.S. I love all of your advice and I tell everyone about you and this channel.
Do you answer questions here? I have a pumpkin emergency lol when I threw out my pumpkins from last Halloween in the yard a pumpkin plant grew from it. I live in an apartment complex and I’m not sure how big I can let it grow and right now it’s about 10 feet long. Is it OK to start cutting off the end of the vine or should I just find a way to reroute it until the season is overI can send pics if needed
Will the tulle work the same as the nets they sell to keep out the squash vine borers and squash bugs? I have a problem with them. Just set up my hills the other day.
We got some of those apple looking pumpkins to decorate with and when they went soggy we through them into the compost. Now half my yard is covered in these apple pumpkins, some Warty pumpkins, a few white Cinderella pumpkins and another invasion of butternut squash. Lol
I've got Jack O'Lantern variety growing. It's been hit with the lawn mower and weed wacker multiple times 😂 it won't go away so we are going to let it grow and see what happens 🎃
"I got this at JoAnn's Fabrics..... or, uh, Emily did" LMAO thanks for the video. Definitely a good piece of the puzzle for a guy looking for a cool little hobby.
I'm doing this from seed to dirt with a stray cat that likes to crap everywhere. lol with just sticking them in the ground without pre planting or creating a hole work? or do you have to make those patch holes before planting?
I planted my pumpkins the 1st of July. My question for anyone to answer. When should I stop the growing of the vine to focus the energy to the pumpkins. I live in a hot climate but cools down at night (the grapes love it).I have many pumpkins on the vines and would like my grandkids to be able to carve a couple for Halloween. Thanks
I just composted my halloween pumkins in my compost pile and a giant pumpkin grew with 3 pumpkins, did nothing just watered, no money, no supplies, no fertilizer!
Thank you for sharing your tips. Where did you find the seeds for those white and black pumpkins?
I have a link in the video description
@@NextLevelGardening Thanks. I should have looked there first.🙂
Hey I have a few gardening questions about pumpkins for you. Can I ask you via email?
I accidentally planted like 300 punmkins this year when I was trying to fertilize my new grass in backyard...and I forgot I had tossed all our Halloween pumpkins in our compost...after watering my grass for a couple days I realized little baby pumnkins popping up literally everywhere in my new beautiful grass. I have a house like yours. I’m in a historic neighborhood in southern Calif. I love it.

good tips! Planting the pumpkin seeds flat is why I think many of mine didn't germinate here. I likely kept them too wet and planted them flat:(
