    I grew pumpkins once when I was 14 and I loved it. There something about gardening that just makes me so happy. I did greenhouse my senior year and I thrived in that class. Last year I did my first full garden by myself. I learned so much and had successes and failures. I think it’s because I did start later in the year. This year I started in February with all of my plants from seed. It’s going so well and I’m so excited to even have more fruits and vegetables!

      I feel this. My first year doing a full garden was last year. Wow. I was so full of myself. I thought I knew everything. Its amazing how much you learn from failure. This year was a grand improvement on that first try. Failed quite a bit this year too. But just slightly less lmao

    I've been wanting to grow pumpkin/squash since I started gardening last year. Unfortunately, I don't have space to grow it. So, I put it off. Then, I came accross this video few days ago. I literally bought kabocha squash seeds after watching your video. Now, 4 of my Kabocha Squash seeds are thriving. I definitely will follow your tips once they are ready for transplanting. Thanks for sharing. Wish me luck!

    I decided to grow some pumpkins this season. Acquires some organic sproutings at my local market. Put them in some soil mounds at the base of my hops. They started climbing the hop shoots at the bottom and now the pumpkins are naturally suspended😁. The Butternuts have multiple pumpkins on them but the Queensland blue ones only have 1 per shoot. Hoping they become monsters so I can share some around with friends and family.

    This video is great. Would it be possible to clarify what you mean when you say “water regularly”. Once a week? Everyday? Every other day? I know it should be about 1-2” inches of water a week but I’m not sure on how often. Thanks!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  3 роки тому +8

      Watering rate can depend on many factors like weather, pot type, soil mix,... I watered my grow bag daily because fabric pots evaporate lots of water. Plastic containers can be watered every other day. If it is hot, or you see wilted leaves, water more frequently (some days I watered twice a day). Pumpkins have shallow roots so always make sure the soil surface is not dry. In any case, as you said water deeply instead of just sprinkling the surface of the soil.

      I am doing this this year as well. I have an entire set up in my back yard against the back wall. Just remember one thing- they set out roots at the vine nodes. They do that for water and protection against the vine borers. You won't get a badass harvest if they can't do it. So Im setting shelves of soil horizontally in three foot sections so that as the vines grow upward they have a spot to set in extra roots. Im screwed for space in my yard so that was my only option. I just used scavenged wood. Seriously dude theres so much free wood everywhere.

You can go as small as 7 gallon grow bags or 14 in wide pots for small variety pumpkins. I hope this helps.

      Some common reasons delaying fruit or female flowers are hot/humid weather, over watering, or too much nitrogen in the soil. Also, feeding your pumpkin with low nitrogen fertilizer will help to get fruit flowers. And when you have fruit flowers, make sure to hand pollinate them. Good Luck

      I used organic 3-4-4 N-P-K fertilizer (Garden-tone). You can use any balanced fertilizer like 5-5-5 (make sure it has calcium or add some garden lime to it). Try to avoid high nitrogen fertilizer; too much nitrogen can prevent flowering. Some other reasons for no female flowers could be: planting too close together, hot or humid weather, and too much or too little watering. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

    Hi, i have a small squash plant. Flowers were budding but mostly male. I had one female flower but will it only get better after pollinating it? Also, what do I do if I only have male flowers? 😔 Thank you!

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  3 роки тому +7

      If the plant is small all you need to do is to wait. As it grows, female flowers will show up. Some common reasons delaying fruit or female flowers are hot/humid weather, over watering, or too much nitrogen in the soil. Also, feeding your pumpkin with low nitrogen and high phosphorus (P) fertilizer will help to get fruit flowers. And when you have fruit flowers, make sure to hand pollinate them. Thank you for visiting and Good Luck!

    Okay so I know that this video was made four months ago but hopefully you can respond.
    I am currently growing a pumpkin in a pot and it's fairly big. I already have a pumpkin growing (I hand pollinated it) and it's about the size of a tennis ball. As the pumpkin started to get bigger... all the other small female buds turned yellow. I removed them because I didnt want the yellow to spread a disease, is that normal for all the other female buds to rot when growing a pumpkin? My plant isnt "HUGE" so I only wanted one pumpkin to grow so it could put more effort into the ONE pumpkin. Last year I wasnt successful with growing a pumpkin and I really wanted to grow one this year. I'm also using the small sugars. Thank you for your time hopefully you will be able to get back to me.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  3 роки тому +1

      It looks like you are on the right track. Most likely the small yellow buds are the ones that were pollinated poorely and should have been removed, which you did. They wouldn't mature anyway. I think all is fine with your pumpkin and you will harvest one healthy pumpkin soon. Thank you very much for visiting and good luck!
