    I bought the older version back when everyone was promoting it. I have used it without significant damage. I did also get the battery option and the battery stays fully charged between trips and holds a charge well when in use. The battery is slim but there are probably smaller portable chargers available. I do carry it in my purse if I think I'll need it on the go. The newer version is beautiful but the shiny surface is just asking for scratches. The extra interior pockets are nice but you can't put too much in them.

    That is such a shame. I'm so so grateful for your July video, because I've been on several work trips with it and it looks brand new. The only scratches are on the metal caps (which is exactly what happened during your durability test, and what the caps are for!) July is cheaper too!

    Thanks, I have the original Away design and absolutely love it. I got a great deal on both carry on sizes in 2020 so I’ve had them for about 3 years and they’ve been workhorses for me. I’ve taken them on many, many flights. They’ve been checked a few times (rarely) and carried on dozens and dozens of times. Mine still look good. A few minor scratches but that’s to be expected. My last hard shell ended up with a massive dent in the corner (Delsey) but no similar issues with Away. Additionally I can fit so much in them. Agree on the batteries - there are useless. I can throw a lighter, more compact battery in my purse and i have no need for a battery in my luggage. That said, I don’t see any reason to get a new one!

    I had the old Away carry-on with portable battery. I agreed with you, it was a hassle to keep removing it for the planes and it did not charged that well, I had to get adaptor cord for my phone and charges kind of slow. It was not worth it. But I did see another commentor that has no issue with it. Keep in mind too with all the fast charging phones now, it will not do that. Their carry-on with the laptop pockret is a nice idea but that takes up too much room away from packing. Besides, my laptop goes into my personal and not in the overhead bin.. I had issue with the wheels on my carry-on, it was dragging on 2 of them and not rolling and the compression pad frame broke. Trolley handle was a little loose/jiggly. Wished I found your channel before.

    Before you did the real world test on your sidewalk, I disliked the Away bag because of its glossy finish. I noticed it showed fingerprints unlike the original matte Away bag. Although a close up of the original Away bag showed scratches, these were not noticeable at all from a distance. I think the original Away bag looks classy whereas the glossy one looks cheap. After you did the real world test on the new Away bag, I wouldn't have that bag even for free. Great review by the way !!

      The fact is, they have no clue that the travel community discusses these thing so why would they possibly choose Lauren as an ambassador when they could choose some "influencer" who takes preposterous selfies pulling "away" luggage through the streets of Rome.

    I don’t own an Away Carry On bag (just the large flex) and I just saw the redesign as a way to hike prices and introduce new colors at the same time. $315 seems like soo much money for a carryon bag. I am impressed with their customer service though but I can’t see spending that much money on a carry on suitcase when other brands are so much less and probably just as durable; if not more durable.

  • @IntriguedLioness

    I had a break between two incredibly annoying Zoom conferences and I was so happy to see a video of yours, my fellow Traveler!
    Aesthetically (and I acknowledge you are more into the aesthetics of a bag than I will ever be because I love the patina of a well-worn Rimowa or my expedition duffels that have been kicked down Amalfi Coast stairs!!) ...
    But aesthetically, I think the new one is hideous. That glossy finish appears cheap and the stitching is horrible!! IMO the only thing the original had was the muted colours, setting them apart from the other brands.
    Even before the driveway test I knew the scratches would appear because polycarbonate was never designed to withstand travel scuffs, the only thing you do is lessen it, the matte finish obviously did a better job.
    PS you are 100% correct on the embedded battery. Airlines started pulling them immediately if they even saw the port. Silly gimmick.
    PPS The handle thing is annoying to me, the only reason I look twice at a level8 advert was because one of their models has the wide-spaced handle. It's not that it's easier to maneuver, which I've tested and I think it is, it's that those silly bars take up too much room in the interior the bag. The wide spacebar puts the interior column further on the outside, it is easier to pack around.
    PPPS I still don't get the benefit of having four spinner wheels. I always assumed it was because when the person became tired of lugging you could _push_ it through the airport. When you have only two wheels and then the legs on the other two corners and you get on an airport tram or subway it doesn't go skating through the aisle. But that's just me I guess🤷‍♀️
    Personally, I would like to have seen the "TakeOff" luggage you have featured with only two wheels that you could remove and two little legs that you could flip it into the bag.
    Another great review and video!
    *_Q: Is Brian ever going to get his shoe back?"_* 😂

      @ItsTheKellys  10 місяців тому

      Haha. I use Brians old shoes now 😂 and the wide handle Level 8 review will be out next week! I can’t wait to see what you think.
      I can’t get on board with two wheels though. Perhaps I’m just too used to spinners, moving them every which way, like an IKEA cart 😂
      Even when we were shooting for a brand yesterday, Brian rolled my spinner case like 2 wheeled luggage (behind him) and I yelled at him haha

    • @IntriguedLioness
      @IntriguedLioness 10 місяців тому

      @@ItsTheKellysmy life has been really hectic so I've lost track... I didn't even know you were going to do a level8!
      I'm not in the market at all for rolling luggage but I did like the innovations of Take-Off and I find it surprising that level8 is the only one that spreads the bar. At one point I saw a piece of luggage at REI, I think it was Osprey, but instead of the usual handle it had a single post that spit into a quite comfortable handle. Again, less interior space taken up by the posts.
      Your IKEA comment made me laugh out loud, and take it easy on Brian. Lugging luggage behind oneself is half of the fun of being in the airport.. you are the Queen who will propel your spinner in front.
      It's interesting to see how far travel items and Luggage have come in the last century. Have you ever seen the ads from the 70s when they first started rolling luggage... I have an ad of a Samsonite with four wheels and it had a strap/tether but whereas the tether unsnapped at the top it pulled from the bottom, as one would walk a dog I suppose. Obviously it would tip over but I suppose that was the predecessor of the modern-day spinner!?!

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  4 місяці тому +1

      @MayonnaiseOreo I have over 50 carry on’s that I review every week, and give updates on, yet only travel about 6 times a year. I’m sorry I haven’t had the opportunity to travel or loan out the quince yet. If you saw my most recent packing video, you see that I actually tried to pack it, but the carry on weight limit of the flight was too light to bring it.
      I don’t “have it out” for Away. I just don’t think their products are worth the hype or the money, as a consumer.
      I started reviewing luggage when my “cheaper” bags would always break after a trip. I started researching brands that have amazing warranties, and, of course, away was the first one that came across my searches. So I tried it, and did not like it. So then I bought a different one, liked it, traveled with it, and it got destroyed in one trip. Yet I paid over $385 for it.
      I do believe there are better pieces of luggage out there with better products for a more affordable price. Not just Monos. Level 8, Heys, Quince, and AeroTrunk for starters.
      I try to truly help my followers that value my opinion but a piece of luggage that they can use for years to come, for a good value.
      And if you see my Monos videos, it’s because my audience asks for them, and I try to please them with what they ask for.
      Have a fabulous day!

      @@ItsTheKellys All totally fair and I suppose I was a bit harsh. I don't think it's a secret you're not an Away fan but I've seen a lot of other people talk about how much of a beating they can take compared to Monos, including great customer service that is no frills. You're one of the few dissenters but it doesn't mean you're wrong either since you're basing it on your own experience.
      I don't have any suitcases which is why I've basically been binge watching your videos and I'm leaning towards Monos due to the price with coupons but their customer service has me skeptical.
      I didn't think it was totally right to say the Quince is way more durable than Away when it hasn't been used yet. It's hard to find any info on the Quince outside of a couple UA-cam videos but I know one said it felt super cheap and another said it held up well during a 2 week trip. It's probably all luck on how well your luggage survives. They all have pros and cons unless you shell out big time money for something like Briggs & Riley but I don't think most travelers needs to go that high.

I know that some people do not like that it only has a front opening, and that you have to unzip twice for the main compartment, but for a carryon and the small Japanese hotel rooms, I do not mind that. I will just stick to my Muji carry-on since it is cheaper. I'm finding that I like Japanese brands like Muji and Lojel for my travels. I will be taking my first trip with the Underseat Pro as my carry on. I'm concerned that I will hate the 2 wheel design, but if I can survive during all of my train travels with that bag, it will be a winner.

      The Japanese definitely know how to travel and between their travel clothes and luggage I would spend hours at travel stores in Japan!
      I do hope you like having only two wheels on luggage. I just left a wordy comment regarding that... With two wheels you also have two legs that act like a braking system. I have seen too many pieces of luggage go scooting through an airport tram!!

      @@IntriguedLioness I love to shop the travel section in Japan too. My concern with the two wheels it rushing in the stations to find an elevator or escalator will be slower, if I'm in a hurry, and that some Japanese cities have those rubber guides on the sidewalk for the visually impaired, and it's difficult to roll four wheels over them at times. I agree with two wheels it will be like a brake. I will be traveling with another person this time, so it will be a perfect time to test the Underseat Pro.

      My entire channel is carry on luggage reviews! Away, to me, should never be over 200, and maybe not even over 160. it seems that you're very biased towards monos carry ons and always paint them in a positive light... probably due to your affiliation with them. you kept mentioning on your videos and in the comments that monos suitcases do not scratch or doesn't scratch very easily. however, countless people have commented on reddit on how easily the monos suitcases get scratched up. the probably reality is that scratching is comparable to the away matte finish. of course a glossy finish will get scratched up more than a matte finish. in all of your videos, you never talk about the common complaints people have regarding monos. #1 complaint is the hidden fee associated with the 100 day guarantee. in that there is $40 fee for returns that catches many by surprise. away doesn't charge a fee for returns. #2 complaint abt monos is the poor customer service and the difficulty in using the lifetime warranty. many reddit feed mentioned how hard it is to get thru to a live person rather than a bot. furthermore there are many reddit feeds about the difficulties of having monos honor their warranty if a wheel or zipper breaks. their "lifetime warranty" is very limiting. #3. monos handle gets stuck when suitcases if fully packed.

    • @ItsTheKellys
      @ItsTheKellys  5 місяців тому

      Thank you for your in depth comment. I read a ton of reddit forums as well, on all luggage brands, and have actually tested most of them myself.How many have you tested, yourself?
      First of all, I do have a relationship with Monos, however, I am gifted bags with them, and do not make any commission whatsoever. I can say the same for most other bag companies that I do videos for.
      When it comes to Away, it was the first bag I ever bought and reviewed on here. I was so excited to get it, but I did not like it, and did the free return with their customer service, which was great, and got the Flex carry on in coast instead. After ONE round trip flight, the bag is so severely scratched up (I have a ton of videos showing the damage) and I was really disappointed. I then tried several other bags, and the first bag that actually impressed me was Monos. I did a scratch test on concrete in my initial Monos review, and it held up really, really well. I have done the same with several other Monos bags, July bags, and several other luggage brands. I am a luggage reviewer, that's what I do.
      Let alone, every time I am at the airport, I see Away bags that are horrible looking. Now, is it okay for bags to get scuffed and scratched? Sure. For Rimowa fans, it's like a badge of honor. However, if I was going to spend money on a bag to have forever, I would much rather spend money on one that actually holds up well.
      When it comes to the handle with Monos, I have actually never had a problem with any of my Monos bags (and I have 6) but I have had a problem with my Away Flex handle. It sticks horribly. And remember, I only flew with it on one trip.
      In your reddit research, have you seen how poorly the Away customer service has become as well? Their warranty isn't what it used to be, from what I hear. And I can actually say, that when I reached out to Away about the damage to my bag, they ignored me, several times, not even receiving a "NO".
      Now, I cannot say anything about my return or warranty experience with Monos, because this is not something that you, nor I, have first hand experience with. We just hear it from others. Have I heard bad things? Sure. Have I heard good things? Yes. And that goes for all of the companies. Individual experiences may vary.
      I can say, that I am *actually* most impressed with the warranty from July. Now that company impresses me 100%
      Now, I have been reviewing bags for long enough to know that Away fans are fans, and you cannot tell them otherwise, and thats fine. But as you can see if you take a look around, I have reviewed well over 40 bags on this channel. I also give updates when I have used them.
      Honestly, I am baffled by the fact that no one talks about how poorly the Away polycarbonate shells actually hold up. By the way, I chose this gloss version, because my viewers have asked for it.
      The main point here? I have used my Monos bags (all 6) a lot with zero problem (as well as several other companies), and in my opinion, my ONE trip with my Away flex bag was enough for me to never want to use it again. Scratches, scuffs and a bad handle? Nah.

    Oh do I have a story for you. I’ll start with AWAY Travel customer service is awful! It used to be good but not anymore. I’ve been an away luggage girl since 2019. I had a white set that’s been all over the world and I couldn’t get it clean anymore. The day the redesign was released I spent $1000 on a new set. I bought the bigger carry on, the medium suitcase and the everywhere bag, all in that beautiful Merlot color. The luggage came a week ago missing the luggage tags. No big deal right. I’ll just call and have them send me the luggage tags. That’s where my love of away started to fade. I called, got a recording to go to the website for help and then it hangs up on you. I went to the website and started a chat. You with a computer that asks questions and after you type in all your answers they tell you someone will be with you in 5 minutes. 10 minutes later I’m told everyone is busy, you’ll have to email them and your chat sessions ends. Now my patience is wearing thin. I send an email, get an automated response and nothing else for 8 hours. When I finally get an email from an actual human I’m so annoyed I just want to return it all. The next day the rep calls me so I figure ok, she’s ver nice so she will get my luggage tags to me and I’ll keep the luggage. She confirms my address through email and gets my luggage tags shipped out. Well, they were supposed to be delivered today. When I didn’t get anything by 6pm I checked tracking. There’s a message on UPS tracking that my package cannot be delivered because the address is incorrect. Needless to say I hit the roof. I have all the emails saved so I replied to the last email from the rep I was working with, telling her what happened. A few hours ago I get the below response from a different person. She obviously didn’t really read my email or actually look into the issue before sending this canned reply. Like it’s my fault they screwed up my address. I am shocked over the incompetence of these people. I started my email with “Hi Kay” and this twit is clueless. I’ve now requested return labels for everything and I’m looking for new luggage. I came to your reviews to see if Calpak was any good when I stumbled upon this Away review. At least now I’m laughing and I will be checking out Monos (I just watched your Calpak soft carry on review). It’s sad because I really love that color 😂
