Here is my organizing tip for those old toothbrushes you use for cleaning: get some travel toothbrush holders (they come in 2 packs at Dollar Tree). Label your holders as to purpose. I keep one in the laundry area for lightly brushing on stain remover. In the bathroom, I have one labeled for ring cleaning, one for cleaning around the toilet seat hardware, one for cleaning around the faucets, one for cleaning shoes, etc. This works well for me because even though I thoroughly clean the brushes after use, I still would not want to accidentally use the toilet seat brush on my rings. I store the holders in a vase under the sink.

We live in a rural area where I can get my meat and diary fresh whenever I need it, usual every two weeks. We have a freezer to be able to stock up on the meat. One of my children raises beef, port and poultry and I get from him not only the meat but tallow and lard to make soap. I don't buy meds but forage our acerage and have arrangements with local farms to forage theirs for medicinal herbs. I also forage for those plants that make great tea and make a delicious " meadow " tea during the hot months. We have a garden also. I use diy cleaners using your recipes. Make my own yogurt, cheese, and baked goods. Weave, spin and use treadle sewing machines, though I do also have power machines I use as well. Use herbs to treat my livestock and pets when applicable.

Melissa, I have a request. I buy spray bottles to make my own diy cleaners, and the random spray bottles I buy end up being AWFUL. The trigger sticks, or it doesn’t mist but spits drops, or it leaks. I bet if you designed a bottle with a quality sprayer that has measurement markings and is kinda cute 😂 to your product line they would sell well!

I use old undershirts and tshirts in place of paper towels for those cleaning jobs that have a high amount of germs-like toilets- or grease- like my stovetop. I just cut them up into workable squares and stash them in a plastic bin. Since the shirts were destined for the trash anyway I don’t add any more to the landfill. An added benefit is that the cloth is stronger than paper towel and they’re usually so old that they don’t have lint anymore.

Melissa I've been watching your videos for years. You are a little bit younger than me and your cleaning tips have embedded my soul. I now can't wipe anything down without using your standard "S" pattern. If I deviate from it, I go back and do in an "S" pattern since that is the way "Melissa" says is best. Also since watching your vinegar cleaning videos I am obsessed it for many things I clean. When I use vinegar in my cleaning I think to myself "Melissa would be so proud of me".

✨Freezer meals✨ Being in the country taught me to do freezer meals. Which, I learned during the pandemic, can give you more food than just a freezer full of meat & veg. Meaning, cooking shrinks the food. So you can make a whole meal, and it can take up about half the space (and if you use foil pans or something uniform in size, it fits better). Chest freezers last longer too✌️ Use those zip up freezer bags to easily organize deep freezers.

I'm the same - if it can't be cleaned with water, dish soap, vinegar, or baking soda, I don't want it. 😂 I have found, though, that granite cleaner works really well for our high gloss countertops. I can do the same job without, but it takes a LOT of buffing.
I've also switched to a budget supermarket (Aldi) for most things. I just have to be sure I don't spend all the money I'm saving by shopping there on the random things they have in the middle aisles. 😂

I shop my freezer and pantry before grocery shopping. I figure out what to make for meals with what I already have and only purchase the ingredients that I am missing. If I do not have much of anything already, I pick out meals for the rest of week and only buy what is needed. I started to use home delivery services about 10 years ago due to a health issue. It actually saves me money since I can’t see the food/shelves and it helps me only buy what is needed. It also saves my sanity and gives me time back, which is very important to me and my health. I also started to make my own cleaners because of you and that has saved me a lot of money.

I learned by accident that the Dawn foam bottles can be refilled with just water & 2 teaspoons on dawn platinum dish soap. Has literally changed my cleaning life. I went from spending $125 on cleaning supplies to $50. I have a Dawn foam pump in the kitchen and all the bathrooms. I buy a 32 oz of Dawn platinum soap and it lasts me about 3 months. No lie. I use the pump to pump foam on my toilet wand to clean the toilet, I put it on my tub scrubber, in the kitchen I pump some on the kitchen counters and sink….put it in a carpet brush for carpets or clothes stain brush of course to wash our hands Literally anything. It’s excellent at removing stains and smells and is a great all purpose cleaner. Rarely do I need to add baking soda or vinegar.
Ofcourse I do use a can spray glass and steel cleaner. I’m not willing to give that up. I’ve found it does a great job for me and I love the smell of it…I also love my Mr Clean for the floors but I do add vinegar…So that’s the 2 things im not willing to compromise
But Dawn platinum and those foam pumps has allowed me to ditch the separate cleaners I had for everything.
Btw the Dawn pump says it’s not refillable and that is a lie … Just add a few squirts into a pump 2/3 filled with water …

I use a large number of the DIY recipes I got from you. My 2 favorites are glass cleaner and tile floor cleaner. I am really short so I can’t get to every spot on the windshield of my car. So I attach a microfiber cloth to a flat floor handled mop and then I can reach both inside and outside of my car windshield. I bought a magic eraser about a year ago. That will be the one and only one I buy. In one of your videos you showed how using makeup and toothbrushes to get the dust off of the vents in my car. Thanks for all the help you give us Melissa. I got one bottle and when it was empty I saved the empty one and use 1/4 to 1/2 cup of Dawn (depending on how strong you want it), one TBSP of rubbing alcohol and then just fill the rest of the bottle with water. I have also replaced drinking soda for drinking home brewed ice tea. I have also started having groceries delivered. This way I get only what is on my list and am not tempted by various goodies I see.

I clean a vacation cabin and have found the bleach tablets 32 in a plastic container are useful to clean the toilet and the toilet brush. They also take up far less room and I just let them sit until Im ready to clean the bowl. They are handy for many things and I don’t splash bleach on myself. Ive made my own cleaners as long as I can remember. To save grocery money I can meat deals in large packages to save on both time and money and I scour the clearance. 1/2 gal organic milk is over $6 here and I buy it and freeze it when I see it for $1 x $1.50. Between different strengths of vinegar, blue Dawn, alcohol and water, I can’t think of any reason to buy a specific product except for Barkeepers Friend, which I love to shine up the sink. I may buy those cleaning cloths you use. They seem thicker than those at the big box store. Really like the stainless tip!! TFS

I no longer use premade cleansers. I mix my own Murphy's oil soap, which is a staple my mom used for wood and just about everything else, Lysol cleaner and water for bathrooms and other areas where I need a degreaser, anti-germ cleaner, Vinegar, baking soda, Dawn and water, and my handy steamer. I do have a reusable microfiber duster and pole thing that bends so it works on fans as well as everything up high and I've had that for years. and of course microfiber cloths.

    1. If I have to drive, I plan the most efficient route (saves gas). 2. I only buy sale items at the grocer - this has saved me A LOT! 3. Rarely buy coffee/Starbucks anymore (I make it at home); rarely eat out/order delivery. 4. Go as long as I can between hair, nails, and waxing appts. (and switched to a convenient neighborhood salon instead of going to the fancy, more expensive one downtown... they do just as good a job, even though I miss some extras). 5. Donating my time or in-kind items (clothing, furniture) rather than cash. 6. Running my dishwasher and washer/dryer during off-peak hours. Unplug appliances and laptop when not in use. My toaster stays on the counter, but is no longer plugged in when not in use. 7. Use a fan instead of AC as much as possible. If need to use AC, keep it one or two degrees higher than usual (e.g.., 75 F / 23 C instead of 73 F / 22 C).

To save money, I cancelled quite a few streaming video subscriptions, as well as Hello Fresh subscription. Also, I only turn on the light in the room that I am in and try to reduce the number of appliances on standby. I drive more slowly on the motorway to save gas and that has made quite a difference as I have a long commute.
I wear clothes for a long time trying to make them last as long as possible. As I have lost a lot of weight over the last years, I dropped many sizes but could skip buying stuff for quite a few sizes by wearing them longer, taking good care of the fabric and for some pieces having them altered.

Battery operated toorhbrushes are great for cleaning. To save money, we buy mostly what is on sale at a good price. We buy meat only on sale at a good price at a local grocery.

I’d love if you could share any tips on cleaning the flexi hose for the shower. All those knooks and crannies are a nightmare and the hose won’t stay still if I use anything bigger than a toothbrush which takes ages. 😢

I attached a hook to the opposite end of the tub. Big enough to hold the hose(and plastic for safety!) I drape it over the hook and spray it with all purpose cleaner, let it soak for a bit while I get the rest of the bathroom, then use a pitcher to rinse it off. My hose is long enough to reach, but you can always place the hook wherever you need to. Then I hang my loofah on the hook so I don't have a random hook in the shower 😂

I switched to your all purpose cleaner and its wonderful! Never buying again! Floor cleaner or maker mop i'm not so sure about, seems fine but we have 3 kids and it takes more effort than the circle mop or i have to use a sponge for stuck on stuff. I do love the maker mop MUCH better when its not the stuck on stuff (yes i was using the heavier mop cover). I dusted the walls wow apparently that was long needed. It has great height reach, the shape is great for wash and dry sides. I mop more often and on more things than I was able to before since no bucket is involved. I was worried about having to change the pads and run out but 4 is plenty as i don't have to change it every time I use it and by the time i'm down to 1 or 2 I have other clothes to throw in the wash.

I use makers clean cloths and all types of microfiber must be washed separately and dried without using and softening agents (or dryer balls). I love the electronic specific cloths, I use one to wipe my TV (nothing else on the cloth) and another to clean mirrors and glass with vinegar water in a spray bottle.

Dilute dishwashing detergent (1:10) and use as a stain remover for clothes etc. Spray, scrub and rinse. Don’t allow to stand for hours as it will lighten the colour of your clothes

I don’t have many old toothbrushes because I switched to an electric one like 7 years ago. The ones I do have, I got at the dentist and they are smaller and less rough compared to the one in this video mainly because I don’t use them, or maybe they’re made to be soft

    • @queens6583
      @queens6583 Рік тому

My dentist told me everyone should use a soft toothbrush, never a hard one because it less harmful to your gums. Also if the bristle splayed outward your brushing too hard. Brushing hard does not equal cleaner. That's why most dentist only give out soft ones.

I clean and vacuum seal fruit and vegetables in mason jars. This is not like canning. I can open the jars and take out what I need and re-vacuum seal the mason jar. The fruit and vegis keep fresh for a few weeks instead of going bad in a few days. You need a vacuum sealer and the mason jar attachment, but it’s worth it.

We did decrease amount of toppings we put on our sandwitches and bread over all. It’s just one topping. Also butter is a topping. I live in Finland and we have opportunity to pick free berrys from forest. So we don’t so much fruits. We pick berrys in summer and fall and eat those instead. I also bake lot more now. If I make stew I use less meat and add red lentils. We also buy less, plan what we are going to eat and eat all of it. Food waste waste also money. Also we don’t buy new clothes for every season. We buy more classic designs and use it until it falls apart.
I also knit lot. So we do wear woolsocks and sweaters and blankets during winter to keep warm. This way we can drop temperature inside our home for few degrees.
We also stopped drinking coffee. We do drink tea instead. It’s way cheaper because one can infuse tealeaves more than once. So we can make few pots of tea with same tealeaves. One gets that caffeine boost also from tea.
Also changing feminine products to reuseable ones saves lot money in short time.
