      It's always nice when you seem to have found the perfect equipment. Unfortunately, the honeymoon phase often doesn't last very long. After a while, I had really crazy deflections with the Velos because of the four, very elastic ends ... If you also struggle with this at some point: the Kite flights from one80 are more than 15% larger than the normal Kite flights from other manufacturers and have the same VAX value as the Velos: 3.9 out of 5.

  • @mathewmusladin4556
    @mathewmusladin4556 7 місяців тому +1

    Always had crazy deflections with any flight. That's what happens with tight groupings. Have used the Velos for over a year now. Scores way better. The deflections are offset by way tighter groupings. Again, thought I would use nothing but pentathlon standard. I was wrong as I'm hitting many more 180's per session now.
    Thank you and have a great day!

    Length and weight of dart will also play a part here too. But I've found more than anything it's the length of stem that plays the biggest part in how a dart flies through the air.
    As others have said, you really have to experiment and various manufacturers sell tune up kits which come with different length shafts and different shape flights. you need the right combination of both through trial and error to discover what set up works best.

    A good introduction for beginners. But a few comments: It's funny that 2 of the 4 shapes shown are not offered by MISSION. The Slim shown have parallel edges, although the Slim flights from MISSION are trapezoidal and significantly larger. The last flights are, as Matt correctly said, Pear Flights (with the small tip at the top), but MISSION only offers the Teardrop Shape (circular at the top). This teardrop flight (even though MISSION also calls it the pear shape) actually stabilises the dart slightly better than the kite shape from MISSION, which is slightly smaller than the kite from some other manufacturers. In my opinion, the comparison of the insertion angles of all 4 flights at the end is therefore only correct for the standard and slim flight. Perhaps you would have noticed that the kite and pear/teardrop fly almost identically if one of you had thrown the kite and pear. In the Edgar TV video from 3 July 2020, you can see that the kites and teardrops (MISSION and Harrows Retina have exactly the same shape here) have the same insertion angle.

    When it comes to dart flights, the best advice really is to experiment with different flights and figure out which one suits you best, sometimes you may have to change the flights if you change the barrels or make the stems longer or shorter.
    Phil Taylor is one example, he went from pear flights in the late 80s - early 2000s to slim flights in the early 2000s - late 2000s to vapour s flights in the late 2000s - present day.
    All because he changed his barrels throughout the years as he went from a mid weighted barrel to a front weighted barrel design.

    When I was playing I tried all different flights and picked tear drop/pear flights, seen everyone using standards, but they just wouldn't fly properly, I was using a very short dart though, think they were about 10 - 12cm (4 - 5in) tip to tail.

    • @missiondarts

    I did an extensive experiment about a year ago with multiple flights and stem length, Pear, Slims and Standard flights and short, medium, and Long Stems.
    Conclusion = I now use a fixed stem and flight system, i.e Condor Axe, L with the standard flight shape.
    The weight of the barrel is also a tricky one to get right, but after starting at 21g moving to 26g and working my way down, I now use the Target Bolides 03 24g, what a dart.

    Flights are cheap enough, you might as well get several different shapes. That way, you can try them all with any darts you buy, since the weight distribution in the dart combined with your throw may do better with a different shape. Disclaimer: I can’t play darts well, but it’s fun trying.

    What would you suggest for someone who uses standard flights and still gets a relatively straight entry angle. My release is heavy and I get comments about how heavily I throw, but when I’ve tried to alter it I’ve got all messed up. Soft throws aren’t something I’m ever going to be comfortable with. I wouldn’t mind more of an upward angle though.

    Wouldn't the only scientific way to evaluate flights be with a robot for true consistent speed and release point? Andy said the dart was coming out of his hand very inconsistently. How could the shape of the flight affect how the dart comes out of your hand?

    • @missiondarts
      @missiondarts  7 місяців тому

      We didn't have a robot handy sorry...The shape of flight absolutely affects how it comes out of your hand, there are 3 points to the dart arriving at the board, the release, the flying, the landing, the smaller the flight the faster and different angle it comes out of your hand.

    I find the comments there in relation to the angle of entry are only relevant to the barrel weight and length, also the stem length and weight. I've experimented with lots of combinations over the years. If they had tried different types and shapes and weights of barrels you can get different effects with those types of flight. That was far from conclusive in my view.

    Nothing astonishing and sensational. It is astonishing, that so few people ruminate and contemplate about the shape of the flights and how they can make them better to optimize the trajectory. Don't they possess scissors at home ?

    • @knutvoberg4236
      @knutvoberg4236 7 місяців тому

      Because consistency plays such an important role in darts, you have to work very precisely with a pair of scissors to reduce all 12 wings to the exact same size and shape. On the other hand, some people also play with 3 flights fanned out at completely different angles (between 90° and some that are almost as flat as in the darts case). They can then cut them with a pair of scissors - it makes no difference anymore ...

    • @darts-multiverse
      @darts-multiverse 7 місяців тому

      @@knutvoberg4236 Yes, you must cut very precisely every flight to the exact same size. Most simple cut means 2 cuts per flight (2 wings at once). Than the next, which you underlay under this flight and cut all around. And you can also use the overprint or the imprinted design of the flight to cut precisely and even. A little bit practice and it goes perfectly. What is the problem further ?
