Spent 100's of dollars over years trying to find the right darts for me. A lot of trial and error from flights to tips to shafts to barrels. I miss those days, haven't played darts in 22 yrs. Was taught by people from the UK in pubs in the US. Love the game my favorite was cricket.

Me too! I love cricket!!! Seems like People outside of the US dont really play cricket. (Observation from DartScore App-online global). I played with a lot of darts early on too currently digging on some 24g RedDragon EVO Series tungsten steel darts with upgraded NitroTech (medium)shafts, standard flight.
I want to experiment with some kite flights and spinners next.

As someone just getting into darts, I have to say this was one of the best in depth videos about the darts itself because of the detail with the examples on board entry , and also the footage. Normally I play in the pub with the darts there, and am now thinking of getting my own darts instead. Did notice that the heaver darts are more relaxing to throw, and bring me more accuracy, but that might be because my technique is still trash. Feel like starting with 25g/23g. Thanks!

Not only should you look at the weight of the dart but also how the weight is distributed. Is it a front, middle or rear weighted dart and how does that affect the darts flight. I haven't done an analysis but I can say that I threw a front weighted bomb style dart for years until Darren at the Darts Review Channel sent me a set of Harrows Verve's in 23g several years ago. (Thanks again Darren). I was immediately amazed at the improvement in accuracy throwing a rear weighted dart like that. Obviously, they suit my throwing style and may not work for everyone but the point is that the weight distribution changed how my darts fly to the board.

    • @trckenergyy7757
      @trckenergyy7757 2 роки тому +2

This might sound stupid but how can you tell where the weight is distributed?

    • @billkipper3264
      @billkipper3264 2 роки тому +2

@@trckenergyy7757 A lot of times you can just look at the barrel and see where the weight distribution is. The Harrows Spina I throw now is fatter toward the rear of the barrel and it's rear weighted. Bomb shaped barrels are front weighted. However, darts with straight barrels you might have to balance it on something to see.

Love videos that go into the physics of darts. Very interesting. So many players don't realize how important it is to match their dart barrel to a stem and flight that works with their throwing motion. One factor I'd like to see you examine is how the barrel length adds another dimension. A 23 gram John Lowe barrel (38mm long) will behave a lot different than a 23 gram Gary Anderson (52.8mm long). with the same stem and flight setup. Thanks for the video and keep them coming.

Cracking video this, oddly mine are the opposite, my 2 potential match sets are either 24g Target ALX 02s or 22g Harrows Avantis, use a no6 on the Avantis and Ten-x (smaller standard) on the ALXs and yet the heavier darts stand up way more in the board despite the weight and smaller flight and I also find with the 22s I'm either 140 or 26 and the 24s more like steady 60s...

Having too many inconsistencies, I moved from 25-26g down to 23g, and now they also feel heavy. Looking at going down to 21-22g.
I've noticed the same thing - with the heavier dart, same stems and flights, they land flatter to the board (actually, now they land tail down for me, and I need to put shorter stems and/or bigger and/or thinner flights if I want them to land flat).
    Loving these series!!!

Very informative. I was particularly interested in the angles of the dart on entry. I used to play 3 days a week, just pub and club, until some weird type of dartitis got me. I think an accident I had on my right arm, and what I can only say as a massive increase in my dominant eye (left) just made it impossible to throw.
After practising a while left handed I realised I wasn't that bad. Joined back up in the pub league throwing left, even picked up a couple of 180 badges 😆 It's now more fluid, but at times unpredictable. I can have a cracking first dart and the second can be nowhere near, like opposite side of the board where I'm aiming! I've been thinking of getting heavier darts to try, but afraid of going down the path of throwing bad money over good 🤷🏻‍♂️

Great stuff Matt. I use 19.5g stiletto darts with small stems and small flights, the dart is fast to the board and lands at about 90°. Excellent video 👍🏼 A lot of people will just look at the board and judge what’s right based on where the darts land, that’s very much the tip of the iceberg. I never did that when i played, I did film myself throwing in slow motion like you did here and look at the flight of the dart as the game isn’t played on the board solely, its played from the oche. A good story I have regarding dart selection involves a certain Phil Taylor. I played against the great man in February 2008, he just got beat by Peter Manley iirc. He was using the Sigma Pro dart at the time, 26 gram, I thought they looked a bit odd for him. Anyway, I sat with him and chatted for a good while and I had a set of 21 gram John Lowe darts and since his game was a bit all over the shop, suggested he’d give them a go to which he wasn’t particularly keen on the idea… probably put off by the small size and light weight of the barrel. At the time, Unicorn had a Golden Hero range out, darts of mostly World Champions with a Phil Taylor grip so I suggested trying a 24 gram John Lowe Golden Hero dart and if he liked them, ask Unircorn to simply make a 26 gram version of this. His wife had a set of these, I don’t know if they were 24 gram, but he loved them and Unicorn made him a 26 gram version called the Phase 5, the dart that probably saved his career.

Thanks for another great video Matthew it is greatly appreciated. I started playing in September last year soon it will be a year and today I threw my 80th 180. It seems like I can adapt to almost any set hence I've hit a max with every set I own about 7-8 sets so far. I started with 24 grams for 2 months and they kept feeling too light. Bought a set of 28 g and threw my first max 2 months after playing steel tip for the first time. Then I went with several sets of 26 grams and it just feels right. I have a set of Loxley Robins 21 grams and it took me six bloody months to hit a max with them. If I buy a new set of 26g I hit a max an hour after getting them. I guess we are all different but I believe that when I throw lighter darts as hard as I usually throw I just can't hit the barn door. With 26 g consistency is there my average steadily rising almost 65 at the moment had several 14 and 15 dart legs 158 and 160 highest checkouts. All in practice obviously since I am only an amateur but I think that in order to throw lighter darts consistently well you have to have much more experience and finer touch...

Thank you! I switched to a 26g...slim flight...and they land inconsistently at odd angles...a few times nice and flat like I like em... I am thinking I need a lighter dart...I love the way yours flew nice and flat (21g) but I probably don't have the same grip and action as you do...and I certainly haven't beat Gary Anderson with a 170 finish! I'll try lighting up my barrels and see what happens. Of course...an inconsistent throwing action could be a part as well...Maybe work on that.

So i dont have the exact specs, im new to the game. Started off with a 20g brass a friend gave me, and started to figure out i wanted a ringed grip, something a little heavier. Went with a set of 22g straight barrel tungsten and they had a harder plastic flight. I only have a few months under my belt but i saw a drastic improvement in my game for week and weeks. And of course alot of practice. I broke a stem on that set and replaced them with stems that were a couple mm longer and a cheaper ( but new ) poly flight. Now its causing the dart to completely tumble. Unless im throwing up towards the double, it almost totally at random. The point hits the the 20, or hits the wire of the 5 or 1. Soo ill hit a 1, the point is on the wire and the flight is totally blocking the 20. Vice versa for the 5. Last Saturday was probably the most frustrating and embarrassing outting ive had yet. Not saying some throws arent my own fault, but i never had them land in the board angled left or right like this. Had an experienced friend tell me stop experimenting with 22g and start at 26g.

I think your grip needs to account for the change in weight. I think if you move your hand up just a bit it to re-find the proper balance, the heavier dart would not have that issue in it's flight path. Basically I think you're throwing the 23g dart like a 21g dart just because that's how you're used to throwing a dart.

i would have agreed on the explanation, but that is only in the perspective of barrel weight. you did not mention the grip of the thrower that compensate their throws in different weights of barrel. i could see that our hand is more flexible to the barrel weight. what i mean no matter how heavy the barrel, we will adjust to it depending on the strength of our whole arms. i have seen shorter or skinny people throws much heavier darts compared to much huge person. i have seen some people also that could not handle well any weight of darts. i mean could not control it. and if we will conclude that the darts will behave on landing the way we want based on their weights, yes at times and no at times. its still relies on the throwers control over the darts.

Good video Matt! Just a question. Folk have told me that tungsten content makes no difference but I’m fairly sure that higher tungsten content means that a manufacturer can make a slimmer denser dart. In my experiments denser darts seem to fall through the air quicker and glide to the board less well. Personally I think 90% tungsten is ideal. Any thoughts?

    • @Edgartvdarts

Yes exactly that the higher tungsten the heavier so means drill depth can be different changing the balance point or can have a thinner dart and keep the grams

Love the content. I am thinking a lot of this is a bit biased though, obviously, you will throw more stable (smooth) darts with 21, cause that's the weight you use. The rest is just not gonna be the same, as you don't use it that often, or at all.

I think you may have missed the point here. The point is not how I adjust to a dart it’s how the dart adjusts to me. Using the same set up and the same grip what’s the difference. 100% I could make changes to suit the dart but that’s not what this is about. All I would need to do is move my thumb placement and I could make it work the same way

Do you think the manufacturers would have tested out these aspects of barrel weight, center of balance, shaft length, flight shape, etc. in a wind tunnel or some had some sort of aerodynamic engineering experiment done?
I know that the thrower influences the dart flight, but with such high stakes in today’s game and the high prices of some of the high end darts, I would think that a ratings system might be useful.
I also play disc golf. Discs are rated for distance, glide, turn and fade. Each disc manufacturer has a chart that shows the predicted flight characteristics for all of their discs and are matched with the characteristics of the type of thrower( ie.beginner, advanced)
Perhaps a rating system for darts could make darter’s purchasing selections a bit more informed. For example: if I throw hard, but want the darts to land upright I should choose a dart with a certain weight, center of balance, stem length and such. It can be fun to experiment with different flights, weights and stems but sometimes it feels like going down a rabbit hole that can lead to no new insights.

Worked down to a 20g dart with a slow draw in front. Set up matched to angle of entry 0-20°. Seemed to help a great deal. Lighter dart didnt need as much force. I basicly just slowed and released to prevent the whip back rythm that killed me. So far so good. Not sure if this is the conventional wisdom. Most people say need more energy to push a lighter dart. Heavy darts track better. Go figure.

What reason would there be for my dart spiralling? I’m releasing correctly, throwing the same (as far as I know) each time but sometimes, and most of the times, my dart spirals, landing with the flight aiming to the left. When it doesn’t spiral then it lands totally flat, no angle at all.
I throw 22g darts with short shafts and standard flights. I’ve tried 24g and it still happens.

we need to see the dart player how he likes to throw his darts, if he throws so fast or he is muscular and have huge power in his arm. which will affect the choice of the weight .maybe if someone throw the darts faster than you the landing will vary

In terms of dart weight there are too many variables. Stance, angle of trajectory from hand, aim etc. To get a true read the mechanics need to be the same throughout the action. I understand what are saying however believe it’s flawed.

    • @markl577

Believe it was something to do with playing in drafty air conditioned halls while in the US on tour. The standard flight stabilised the dart in the air & he ended up staying with it. Something like that anyway!

The scientist in me has to say that there is no where near enough data to make any conclusions. For example the heavier darts were slower through the air, and wobbled more. This may not be due to the increased weight but down to you the dart thrower. If you threw faster, cause you were used to the heavier darts, perhaps they would fly truer. In other words is the smoothness in the air down to the speed of throw rather than the weight of the dart? We don't know from this video. To do this scientifically you need to convince PDC to collect the data for a whole tournament, so you have a variety of weights and players to see what gives the consistent smooth passage through the air. The problem then would be each players darts vary by much more than weight, with different styles, stems and flights as well as throwing style.
Maybe just look at Wright for a year, given the wide variety of equipment he uses?
