I've always gone for thinner barrels because they will group closer and less likely to hit eachother off the board. Trouble is I can't group close enough to demonstrate that theory
OK, so after 5 masterclass videos I learned the following: stand the way you like and feel comfortable, hold the dart any way you like if it feels comfortable, throw with any technique/speed/arc and aiming method you like and use whatever dart equipment you like; so, if you manage to get good scores by throwing between the legs with the weirdest dart you can buy, so be it ;) ; I watched several vids of a great many top players, no two players have the same technique and none use a technique taught in 'beginners' vids... some even seem to play world-class darts with a technique that just about any coach would say is completely wrong ;)
I absolutely love this! Unlike Golf, there's no real coaching in darts except for who's taught you, and what you pick up seeing online. I hope to see more of Paul kicking ass, and feeling superior against his opponents playing on the tour! He is almost like a "this generation" Wayne Mardle in my opinion. He's damn good, but great at commentating the games! Keep this up Live Darts!!!!
And then purchase the darts from said dart shop! Nice video, what a ridiculously deep game I’m learning this is. There is something to be said also for adjusting to the darts, regardless of what they are..I’ll put my money on the archer, not the arrow.
YES! Just won my boyfriend thats been a bouncer for 30 years and has been in the clubs and bars playing darts for 14 years. Thank you for the lessons. I totally enjoyed the victory!
I guess we are lucky to have so many sports/darts ships in England ay ? 22g Harrows barrels with very thin steel mid-sized shaft with pear flights (no grip on the point ) is what I use and I love em .🎯🏴
Really good advice overall. One exception ‘the colour makes no difference to performance’ … explains how the colour makes a difference to performance for him…
I have Monster barrels and Predator tips that are 22g and i absolutely LOVE them!!! My shafts are on the shorter side and the flights are heavier plastic... Divine setup for me.....
When it comes to color I have always found that red flies smoother and straighter than compared to other colors because red to flex aerodynamics and flies through the air and thinner dense scenarios it's complicated color is very important when it comes to how the dart flies blues and oranges will make your darts fly left or right Red Ghost straight, clear it can do some crazy movements in the air trying to be aerodynamic because the dense air doesn't know what color it is since it's clear so It can do some crazy stuff
Great video - It's a pleasure listening to you guys! But honestly, you could have made it 3x longer! I would love to hear you guys go in to more detail regarding the theory behind the factors affecting the throw of a dart. I'm quite new to darts and have been giving consideration to my setup. However, I can't help feeling I'm going the wrong way and putting too much emphasis on setup as opposed to sticking with one setup until I'm more competent. (3 dart average ~45, 5'8'', ~70kg and not muscly!)
What about longer points vs shorter points? also jealous of the UK cause in the states we dont have dart shops really to try stuff out, we have to buy a bunch and try them out.
Jason Lloyd Longer points can enable you to group your darts tighter, however if you don't have a strong enough throw, they might not be firm in the board and may get knocked out a little easier.
I called a few of his matches when he hosted a professionals nighti the Harrogate league and Iwill neve rlive it down. I got all the scores right (correcting a mistake form the score typist even)....but I called him Phil instead of Paul. I apologised and he was cool with it to be fair but the audience did not let me forget at all. 'Come on Phil!' was the main call all bleedin' night!. Any other callers or referees who made that type of error out there? As for the dart advice, very good and my game has improved but it still could be better thanks to Paul's (Phil's) advice.
surprised he didn't mention point lengths. I think most people would benefit from 35-40mm points as opposed to 25-30mm points. It just makes it easier to get tight groupings, especially if you have a soft dartboard
Those are the exact darts I've been looking for. Mine are close but I can't find them with grip on the tip. Any chance someone knows what he's using? The guy in blue
My grip has middle finger on the point. It starts close to the barrel, but tends to slide down to mid/lower point on the drawback. I cannot find a straight or apex point with a lower grip. Could you "point" me in the right direction to find those? I'm in USA, but will pay overseas to get them. Thanks
Your born with the actual equipment. Barrels, points, stems/shafts and flights are all accuotrments. Incidentally the first darts had no flights when they were added thus was developed the first weapons system!
As a youngster i did very well with 24g fat darts untill i left them behind one night, i tried to convert to something like in this vid but just couldn't get a decent hold and threw too many loose darts, with quite small hands and thin fingers it puzzles me why i cant get on with something that doesn't block the treble so much.
I love my match darts but I change them almost as much as peter Wright. Would you suggest sticking to one set of darts and using only them or does it not really matter?? I feel I can throw with all types of darts and I tend to change when I plateau
Same here. Not as bad as Wrighty but sometimes the darts feel too light and sometimes too heavy also I swap around a fair bit. Anything from around 20 to 24 and slightly different barrels also.
I just buy a new set every six months or so. Still can't work out which weightvis best for me. You could use the same darts and sometimes theyre going to high above the treble and the next time you seem to be forcingvit as they're too low. The human body changes from day to day. Think that's why wven the top players have off days. By the way have now 180s with 7 different sets of darts ranging from 18g to 26g. But seem to have lost my mojo as haven't hit one for quite a while.
I am able to throw fairly descent number on the board nowadays. But I tend to throw my darts to high. Whilst I don't put allot of power behind my throws. It feels like I have to hold back my power everytime or else it will end up around the double 20 region. Anyone got some tips on why this is happening? I don't think it's the darts themselves but rather something wrong with my technique. I tried different dart weights by now but I haven't noticed real difference.
I've just started playing and had the same issue. I found that shorter shafts and smaller flights flattened out the throw. However this was at the detriment of dart stability. 🤷🏼♂️
I’m running into issues where my flights keep coming off after I stick my darts..my shafts I use are Flight Locks by Viper. This shaft has metal rings at the top so you can supposedly lock your flights in place. It does not seem to work...anybody have any suggestions?
Well it's gotta be a shaft or flight issue so trial and error. Think you're gonna have to try some different shafts and if that doesn't sort the problem the flights. The rings are usually pretty good at keeping the flights on so that's a weird one. Let us know how you get on buddy!
Played from'91 thru'97 started in soft tip league worse player in the league to tip player. Went on to win every women best of the best in cougar, top flight even entered and took first in women steel tip all stars. Miss those days so dearly now, the game just became too political. But for a girl that started in a hole in the wall for the chance to compete against Germany. (Low f that i allowed a jealous husband to trade down and not play the Vegas tourney, a chance I'll never get again. I tell anyone interested practice until you can throw a hat trick, 6 dart 301 etc best when under the pressure of a freight train. Don't let anyone or anything hold you back, This being one of my biggest regrets. Personify for a female i always used 21 grams long shaft always with speed flights but your shot will determine your preference. Shoot for the moon, or should i say that ton 80. Don't belive sex, height weight it any "handicap" stop you. Hammerhead all day for me. Miss the game so dearly now
Not giving lengths in millimeters. Short?? Intermediate-medium shaft length??? Huh??? Video could be much more informative. Barrels have lengths too. Disappointing.
When you shop online, you will find ‘short’, ‘intermediate’ and ‘long’ shafts... they don’t mention size either. It’s a bit like clothes: how many cm is a M or XS T-shirt? Good luck!
I've always gone for thinner barrels because they will group closer and less likely to hit eachother off the board. Trouble is I can't group close enough to demonstrate that theory
😂
🤣 👍
Ya tough game lol
Same here
Me too lol

Exactly! If this dipstick knew anything he'd still be throwing Darts on the circuit. I wonder why he isn't?
"it can be very expensive trial and error buying darts online...." In the previous 3 mins of the video I had already purchased 3 parts from Amazon! 🤣
I’ve got to say I’m really enjoying this series. It’s concise, to the point (pardon the pun) and no nonsense. Great. Thank you. 👍🎯
It tells you nothing, because they haven't a clue.
Always enjoy listening to Paul, cheers.
I absolutely love this! Unlike Golf, there's no real coaching in darts except for who's taught you, and what you pick up seeing online. Darts and Golf. Dartitis and Yips.
One and the same.
As for the coaching, both neither notices or comprehends the reason why you can or can't.
And then purchase the darts from said dart shop! Nice video, what a ridiculously deep game I’m learning this is. There is something to be said also for adjusting to the darts, regardless of what they are..I’ll put my money on the archer, not the arrow.

Thanks so much for that video. It was great breakdown.
Paul is the best
Really good advice overall. One exception ‘the colour makes no difference to performance’ … explains how the colour makes a difference to performance for him…
If only in uk you could try in a shop at a dart board with different darts would help so so many before buying
Nice Masterclass - thanks guys !
I have Monster barrels and Predator tips that are 22g and i absolutely LOVE them!!! My shafts are on the shorter side and the flights are heavier plastic... Divine setup for me.....
I'm using Red Dragon 20g Wayne Warren Darts with medium white prism force stems and hardcore Welsh flights never swapped my points at all, 🎯💯👍
When it comes to color I have always found that red flies smoother and straighter than compared to other colors because red to flex aerodynamics and flies through the air and thinner dense scenarios it's complicated color is very important when it comes to how the dart flies blues and oranges will make your darts fly left or right Red Ghost straight, clear it can do some crazy movements in the air trying to be aerodynamic because the dense air doesn't know what color it is since it's clear so It can do some crazy stuff

"Dart shops are everywhere!" Me: laughs in American
Poor bastard
We’re is everywhere ??
Where in Glasgow??
Pffff, shop, I can't even find anywhere to play within a 30 minute drive.
i feel you, found only one shop to try darts there... abroad XD
I use a skinny barrel with skinny flights and 19mm stems works brilliantly for me.
great help thanks ,22g with medium shaft i feel it is then
I like the 30 to 32g darts as I feel they give more stability
Jesus FairPlay like throwing led
What about longer points vs shorter points? also jealous of the UK cause in the states we dont have dart shops really to try stuff out, we have to buy a bunch and try them out.

Adapt yourself a Dynamite Dave throw and you’ll be able to throw any dart!!
Hahaha 🤣
Awesome! 🥳
Paul's Winmau 22 g darts was been my first set of darts , main reason why i dont use them is they not grippy enough for me .
If you wanne use blue ones like peter wright uses.. or pink ones like peter wright uses.. or black ones like peter wright uses.. or green, red,.. 😂😂
surprised he didn't mention point lengths. I think most people would benefit from 35-40mm points as opposed to 25-30mm points. It just makes it easier to get tight groupings, especially if you have a soft dartboard
Being from the US we don’t really have to many dart shops unfortunately. What’s a good website for info and sale of equipment?
I try to use 22g 6.5mm but only had one 180, but when I use 24g 7.8mm phill Taylor’s I get loads of 180’s.. no idea
Love darts the best my name is Marcus Craig king from Pembrokeshire west wales 🏴
Those are the exact darts I've been looking for. Mine are close but I can't find them with grip on the tip. Any chance someone knows what he's using? The guy in blue
what about tatoots? am I going throu bezter having my arms tatooted? I assume tshirt is then requirement.
I wish there were dart shops in my area. Trial and error it is. Lol
Why? I certainly wouldn't buy a set of darts that has been used by someone else.
Personally I like a 24g to 25g dart currently I’m using a 25
I like a front loaded barrel
My grip has middle finger on the point. It starts close to the barrel, but tends to slide down to mid/lower point on the drawback. I cannot find a straight or apex point with a lower grip. Could you "point" me in the right direction to find those? I'm in USA, but will pay overseas to get them. Thanks

What’s everyone’s opinion on being stuck between 2 throws? How to decide which one works best when it varies
Just look at the target and throw naturally
I love my match darts but I change them almost as much as peter Wright. Would you suggest sticking to one set of darts and using only them or does it not really matter?? I feel I can throw with all types of darts and I tend to change when I plateau
Same here. Not as bad as Wrighty but sometimes the darts feel too light and sometimes too heavy also I swap around a fair bit. Anything from around 20 to 24 and slightly different barrels also.
If you have got little muscles surely you would use a heavier dart: the heavier the dart, the less forward momentum required surely??
Might have been a joke mate....
I like 40g darts I hate lighter ones will that stop me doing well?
in short: yes
how i wish that there's a shop that allows you to throw on the board with different types of barrels they offer in the shop😂😂
I just buy a new set every six months or so. Still can't work out which weightvis best for me. Forget going to the shops now during the pLandemic; I wonder how many will survive... :(
So, whatever Dart / components works for you, are the right ones.?
It seems to me that this entire series is, "...well it depends on what feels right to you."
7:19 i wish i have that possibility in Poland, ehh
I am able to throw fairly descent number on the board nowadays. But I tend to throw my darts to high. Whilst I don't put allot of power behind my throws. @@DJ_Mozer still got it. Had 5 180s in one month. But I still have to hold back on my throw. No one is able to give me reason why apparently.
I’m running into issues where my flights keep coming off after I stick my darts..my shafts I use are Flight Locks by Viper. This shaft has metal rings at the top so you can supposedly lock your flights in place. It does not seem to work...anybody have any suggestions?

Best stems I find are the red dragon nitro tech shafts they are very good the flight is locked in never had an issue I highly recommend them
Easier for those in Europe.
Played from'91 thru'97 started in soft tip league worse player in the league to tip player. Went on to win every women best of the best in cougar, top flight even entered and took first in women steel tip all stars.

Dart shops 🤔
Disagree on the colour being meaningless. Especially for beginners a bright coloured dart can distract you.
Name dropping all over the place means nothing to me. If you mention a player's preference, show an example picture of what they use.
If you can play darts..you can play with any darts..
Why the hell is he asking about color as if that matters…….
Maybe he's a pretty boy?
Not giving lengths in millimeters. Short?? Intermediate-medium shaft length??? Huh??? Video could be much more informative. Barrels have lengths too. Disappointing.
