I get a detox bath once a while with exactly the same ingredients without the acids. It's 1 cup of each baking soda, borax and hydrogen peroxide. I use one oz of Miracle II soap, which is detoxing by itself. Real sea salt, Bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar are great additions as well. I'll definitely use your recipe to whiten my white garments. Thank you ladies!
Emmaline, I remember you sharing how you stripped your whites years ago. I did it a few times back then and loved the results. However, I had totally forgotten the recipe. Thank you for sharing, again!
I am so glad you remember it again. You have Eric and all the little's white shirts to keep clean and white for Sunday. This laundry stripping solution is a sure way to look sharp and like new for so much longer.
I use store bought clothes washing detergent. Never had to strip my clothes and my whites didn't look like the ones in the UA-cam video. Did the video clothes have had homemade laundry detergent?
They had been washed with store bought laundry detergent. The difference could be your water. Water in different areas has different levels and types of minerals in it which can make a difference.
Wow! Thank you so very much for this tutorial! I use NORWEX cloths, towels and sheets and I’m only allowed to use their super simple detergent. My whites have been staying dingy because regular detergents will coat the silver in the fibers and not allow the cloths to work correctly in cleaning the bacteria off of surfaces. I came across your video because I was looking for a way to make them white again. I plan to run them all through the NORWEX detergent after your concoction. It’s crazy how just minutes into being in this mix the water was immediately dirty! 🤯 I can’t wait to see the end results! THANK YOU!
I am so excited for you to find something that works so well. I have some Norwex towels I bought at one of those house party shows. I did not know that about those towels. I am sure mine are likely ruined ... though I make my own laundry solution also, so perhaps mine MIGHT be okay.
I've tried everything to get the dinginess out of my white washclothes, but nothing has worked so I know buy colored ones. However, I'm encouraged and I will give it a try this weekend. Thanks for this video!!!
I've purchased citric acid at the grocery store on the baking aisle, but your pay upward of $12 for 1 pound. I buy mine on Amazon in a 1-gallon bucket because I can save so much money that way. I put a link to two different brands. I have used both. Both are food-grade citric acid which is not necessary for the cleaning recipe, but I used citric acid when canning so I like to make sure I only purchase food-grade. amzn.to/3AiLZnw or amzn.to/3xp6rRX

I truly need this, thank you so much for giving me hope for my whites! 🥰
You can do this with colors also if you feel they need a refresher also. I've used this same recipe on my husbands work clothes tons of times. Congrats on the new house.
I just used this recipe on our sheets. I didn't have the citric acid. Had to soak them twice but the results were amazing. Thank you for the recipe. It has been a relief to get the dinge out of our linens!

I used your recipe yesterday and I was amazed at the difference in my whites. I will be adding this to my spring cleaning schedule 😊 thank you for the information.
So. I have a baseball tee style shirt that has a white body that’s nice and dingy and it has red arms. I know this wouldn’t bleach the red, but if I add the top will the red color the whites?
This is necessary because of the new style washers and the HE detergent. Do you remember your mother or grandmother having clean laundry that was still dirty? I found and now love the GE Deep Fill Washing Machine. It has an actual functioning agitator and it let's you fill the washer as much as you want. The lid only locks for 2 min at the start soit can balance but when the fill starts, the lid unlocks. If you need more water so your clothes are actually submerged, you just push the deep fill button and add as much as you want. If you want to soak, just push pause and soak all you want. Because you can use more water, and soak you can use the products you have on that shelf. Except Dawn. I went back to regular powdered DETERGENT like regular Tide. The HE soap keeps down suds by n't using a surfactant, regular detergent has surfactant. That's what the Dawn does. I use borax in my washer along with my regular detergent. We have hard water so some vinegar in the wash water, a couple glugs will do and same in rinse. For whites I use what my Granny did, glueing. Just that little bit of blue makes whites just blinding white. I understand why you must do this stripping and the products you use will absolutely do a great job. You shouldn't have to do this. Ever. Your washer should do it by allowing enough water and using wash soap that removes the dirt. The new machines don't rinse correctly. Even what little crud they might get out, doesn't get rinsed out. That builds up until you pull your clothes out and they just don't look or smell clean. Then you have to take time you don't have to basically hand wash clothes in the bathtub. GE Deep Fill Oh, also if you set the settings how you want, just before you push start, push the Deep Fill button and hold it for 6 seconds, then push start, it automatically fills the tub half full regardless of how much laundry is in the washer. Half full!
@@WisdomPreserved I know I sound like a lunatic, basically writing a love letter to washing machine. After paying anywhere from five to eight hundred dollars for a washer, you shouldn't have to do your CLEAN (supposedly) laundry in the tub. Hi there wonderful ladies of the laundry hack! What a great video. I'd love to try this recipe and I live in Bali where we do not have access to Dawn, so far as I've seen. Well water is the worst! You should see my RV shower. I really need to do a video for calcium deposits. LOL! I am positive this will help your laundry washed in well water.
Hello, thank you for your great question. It really depends on the length of time and severity of the grease stains. For instance if a piece of clothing or linen recently got grease on it then the likelihood of the grease coming out without pre-treating is great. If however the grease stain has been there for a long time and has set in then it may help, but not entirely remove it. I hope knowing this information helps.
I purchase my citric acid at Walmart or WinCo (grocery store). It is usually on a top or bottom shelf in the canning section. If you can't find it at your local grocery store here's an Amazon link: amzn.to/3FnWLKi
I have tried this with brand new whites and though the water becomes slightly cloudy from the cleaning supplies it is essentially clean. It is my experience that the dirtiness comes from the use the the clothes with body oils, dirt, and soap buildups.
Hi, I don't have a tub him and it means that I have to do it in a bucket. The thing is that you have measures for the ingredients but not for the volym of water. Can you help me to think proportionally?
Do you have a washing machine? Here is how to use this process in a washing machine. ua-cam.com/video/D1zYhIvuohA/v-deo.html If not, what size is your bucket? Is it 5 gallon, or do you have access to a medium-large storage tub? The average washing machine uses 20 gallons of water so if your bucket is 5 fallons cut all of the ingredients to 1/2 the amount of each. So, a full recipe is about 20 gallons of water so calculate proportionally.
@@WisdomPreserved thanks a lot for your answer. I have 3 wash machines, 5 liters, 7 liters and 9 liters. I don't know what a "galon" is in measure ( I'm a Brazilian that lives in Sweden, both countries don't use "galons" as measure). I have to try to find those products in amazon.com too. Some products here can be bought just in drugstores. When you talk "peroxid",how much procent? Here I find 7 % and to buy it in drugstore I have to tell why. 🙂 There are control over some products and some products are even not used by Swedish people for the environment sake (as bleach, for ex, no Swedish uses it, just foreigns!).
If you put an acid in with an alkali, then they will neutralise each other, but one will be left in excess, so it seems to me that one will be redundant. Am I right? If not please explain the chemistry.
You have me a bit intrigued about the chemistry of this so I looked up some information and this is what I found. "Acidic cleaners are best for removing mineral deposits, rust stains or discolouration from copper and other metals. Alkaline cleaners, by contrast, are especially good at breaking down fatty or oily deposits, which is why many laundry detergents are alkaline, or basic." So by placing them together is one completely cancelled out by the other? Hmm. I don't know. I do know that this solution works. It might be interesting to try to customize it for your situation. For example if it is mineral deposites you are trying to get rid of hold the alkali from the solution or if it is oily deposites hold the acid. If you end up experimenting with it let us know what results you come up with. I would love to hear about it.
Wow! This is amazing. Thank you ladies for sharing, is so very much appreciated. Every day's a school day with you in that l get to learn something new - well, new for me. 😊 👍❤
Yes, definitely! Any delicates that can be laundered can use this solution. My more delicate items I like to clean in the sink in a smaller more controlled batch. If your clothes are dry-clean only speak to your cleaner about the yellowing.
@@judyadom4684 It was about 4 inches deep which may be a little different for each tub but it should be effective still. We just wash our whites with laundry detergent like our other clothing and repeat the stripping in 3 months or sooner if there is a need.
@@judyadom4684 If there are some bits of color in the clothing it should be fine but if you specifically want to strip colored clothing you will want to leave out the citric acid so it is a little more gentle.

In place of a 'soak' cycle, I do this for my "efficiency" washing machine. I usually start the cycle the night before right after supper. I detest my supposedly "high efficiency washing machine". "High efficiency" my eye! There's nothing high efficient about it! All it's good at is making sure my clothes stay dirty so I have to buy more worthless junk to try to get them clean. Anyway...hope this helps! --put the clothes in the machine and turn on "Rinse & Spin" but turn off the spin & let it run. This will make the clothes heavier to get the machine to add more water. (it works) --Start the normal cycle but stop it when the machine begins to agitate. --Using a broom handle or a mop with the 'head' removed, I push the clothes under the water and let them sit overnight. (If doing this early a.m. I let them sit 2-4 hours or more). This gets my clothes cleaner than anything I've tried. I think what you are referring to is RECENT protein based stains. This is not specifically a stain remover solution for a new stain on clothing or fabric, but rather a whitening solution for clothing that has been colored over the age and use of the fabric. If I had an article of clothing that recently became stained I would treat it separately before adding it to a whitening batch. This is not the most gentle temperature, but it powers through dirt and odors. Hot water has the most cleaning power because it speeds up the chemical reaction of the cleaning solution. If you want to guarantee your clothes will smell clean and fresh the next day, wash them in hot water. The purpose of using the hottest water possible on the clothes (even to the point of first boiling the water) is to expand the fabrics by heat and thus to loosen the dirt and allow it to drop out of the fabric into the tub below. I hope this explanation helps. If you have any other questions let me know.
I've always had the whites whites. Even friends have commented on how good they look. I don't know what happened but recently my clothes and towels look so dingy. I have changed nothing. Anyway, I tried this technique and it didn't work for me. 😭😭 I even did a 2nd run and left them soaking over night. They look exactly the same. 😭😭 Not sure what I did wrong. Maybe I'll try again. 😉
Here are some things to consider; Has you water changed in any way? Hard Water or Soft Water. Did you use washing soda (different than baking soda). Are you washing your whites separate from all other fabric articles, or did you wash them with darks that tinted them from the clothing dyes. (If that happened the dingy color will be hard to remove). Was you water hot enough. I get the water as hot as possible and then still add boiling water throughout the process because the hotter the water the better. Let me know if any of these suggestions help.
Baking Soda can be converted into washing soda using this process: ua-cam.com/video/19Haop0i1Uw/v-deo.html As far as the Borax goes you can try any powdered laundry soap. My first laundry soap option would be OxiClean, but ultimately try any powdered soap and so long as you have all the other ingredients you should get great results.

HELP! I went to brunch last week and did not realize the booth I sat in had JELLY on it. I had a brand new pair of ivory colored Hugo Boss linen/denim jeans on. I pre washed with Oxiclean and it bleached the spot white! How can I even out the fabric without ruining them?😭 it’s painful to ruin something so expensive
I'm so sorry. How sad. Unfortunately there is no way to add the color back in once it is taken out. Really your only option is to try to bleach the rest of it to match your bleached spot. Good luck with it. I hope you can save them.
If your washing is coming out of your washing machine still that dirty, then there's something wrong with either your machine or your detergent. If I have a small stain on something I try to treat it before putting it in the machine. Everything come out fine. Whites are white and colours are always bright. The only thing I sometimes have a problem with is black things fading, but that's my own fault for not taking enough care with them.
If you go to minute 13:06 on the video you can see two a comparison with the white shirt that we held out in the beginning. It's a great idea to show a folded stack of clothes before and after. Perhaps we can do that on the next video.

Well water is the worst! You should see my RV shower. I really need to do a video for calcium deposits. LOL! I am positive this will help your laundry washed in well water.
Wow! what a result! Does this remove the tiny "grease spots" off the clothes? Or doe those need to be taken care of prior to doing this strip?
Hello, thank you for your great question. It really depends on the length of time and severity of the grease stains. For instance if a piece of clothing or linen recently got grease on it then the likelihood of the grease coming out without pre-treating is great. If however the grease stain has been there for a long time and has set in then it may help, but not entirely remove it. I hope knowing this information helps.
Can this also be done in the washing machine?
As long as you had a top loader that allowed for soaking it could be.
Where can I get the Citrus Acid? Or did you make it?? If so how do you do that.
I purchase my citric acid at Walmart or WinCo (grocery store). It is usually on a top or bottom shelf in the canning section. If you can't find it at your local grocery store here's an Amazon link: amzn.to/3FnWLKi
Have you ever tried this with brand new whites? Could the "dirt" be in the clothes from te beginng?
I have tried this with brand new whites and though the water becomes slightly cloudy from the cleaning supplies it is essentially clean. It is my experience that the dirtiness comes from the use the the clothes with body oils, dirt, and soap buildups.
Does laundry stripping take the color out of the clothing because I wouldn’t want that or does it just take a dirt and grime out of it?
If you are doing colors it may be a good idea to leave out the citric acid or over time you could see some fading.
Thank you ladies. I noticed there is no bleach. Would this be safe for dark heavy clothes?
I would leave out the citric acid but then it should work well for you.
Hi, I don't have a tub him and it means that I have to do it in a bucket. The thing is that you have measures for the ingredients but not for the volym of water. Can you help me to think proportionally?
Do you have a washing machine? Here is how to use this process in a washing machine. ua-cam.com/video/D1zYhIvuohA/v-deo.html
If not, what size is your bucket?
🙂 There are control over some products and some products are even not used by Swedish people for the environment sake (as bleach, for ex, no Swedish uses it, just foreigns!).
does oxy stuff help?
Some people believe adding OxyClean to their laundry stripping helps. In my experience, I get the same results with and without it.
Does it have a strong smell? My husband has COPD and Asthma. I tried making my own laundry detergent and he ended up in the ER.
That's horrible! This doesn't have a strong smell but use caution the first time you make it anyways, just in case.
Do u need citric acid?
You could do without it but it won't be quite as effective. If you were going to use this on colored clothing you would omit the citric acid.
Do u have one for greasy work clothes?
YES I do. I will film it asap. My husbands work clothes need a good scrubbing.
Ty.. I'll keep a look out for it..
It is amazing! Thank you for sharing!
We love this one.
Wow! This is amazing. Thank you ladies for sharing, is so very much appreciated. Every day's a school day with you in that l get to learn something new - well, new for me. 😊 👍❤
I love this method!
What about white dress clothes made with other than cotton material. I have really nice blouses but they’re getting a yellowish tint to them.
Yes, definitely! Any delicates that can be laundered can use this solution. My more delicate items I like to clean in the sink in a smaller more controlled batch. If your clothes are dry-clean only speak to your cleaner about the yellowing.
Hey loved loved loved this video THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE INFO new subbie here. Gotta go now and ✔ out more of your videos😳😀
Yay! Thank you! Thanks for subscribing. We hope you love more videos.
Hi, what percentage is the hydrogen peroxide 3%?
It is 3%.
@@WisdomPreserved thanks. and how many gallons is the water in the bath? And how do you maintain the whites until the next stripping?
@@judyadom4684 It was about 4 inches deep which may be a little different for each tub but it should be effective still. We just wash our whites with laundry detergent like our other clothing and repeat the stripping in 3 months or sooner if there is a need.
@@WisdomPreserved Okay. And is the same recipe good for colored clothes?
@@judyadom4684 If there are some bits of color in the clothing it should be fine but if you specifically want to strip colored clothing you will want to leave out the citric acid so it is a little more gentle.
Ahh this is amazing! So excited to try! I’ve been looking for something just like this. I’ve seen ppl putting a single sheet in a bucket, but I’ve got a white comforter and the idea to just throw it all in the bathtub is amazing! Lol. And you guys were sooo thorough!! Love it! Subscribing :)
So glad you found us and that you are giving it a try. Come back and let us know how awesome it turned out for you. Yay for subscribing. I hope we make loads of videos that you love!
How can you get the dingyness out of colors?
You can use this for colors too. If you leave out the citric acid it won't fade the colors.
(it works)
--Start the normal cycle but stop it when the machine begins to agitate.
--Using a broom handle or a mop with the 'head' removed, I push the clothes under the water and let them sit overnight. (If doing this early a.m. I let them sit 2-4 hours or more).
This gets my clothes cleaner than anything I've tried. I have a very expensive ''mpeller washing machine' (which is the same as saying, "your clothes will never be clean again. Bwha-ha-ha-ha!) ...which I detest more than words can describe. It will be going a
Thanks for sharing your technique.
Was there an average cost of doing this?
Where do I buy citric acid
I purchase mine at the grocery store. It is generally on the baking or spice aisle. Amazon is also a good source: amzn.to/3vnPtlZ
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
Thanks ladies! Love this idea
Thanks, l am going to do it. Utah
Good luck! It has been a great method for us.
I thought hot water cooks in the dirt. Can you advise
@@WisdomPreserved thank you 🙏
@@liliacerda6646 You are most welcome!
I don't have borax or washing soda in my country. What else can I use?
Baking Soda can be converted into washing soda using this process: ua-cam.com/video/19Haop0i1Uw/v-deo.html
As far as the Borax goes you can try any powdered laundry soap. My first laundry soap option would be OxiClean, but ultimately try any powdered soap and so long as you have all the other ingredients you should get great results.
@@WisdomPreserved thanks to you.. I made my own washing soda... And it works wonders with all the bedsheets I had sitting in the cupboard for years. Tq so much
@@divacute9369 Woo hoo!!!! I am so glad it worked so well for you.
I thought I was the only person left on the planet that uses the tub and soaks her clothes!!!!!!💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👍👍👍👍
Could you have put all the detergents in while water was going in?
Yes, that would work.
White vinegar rules!!!! I always have a gallon of it in my home!!!!
A (brand new) toilet plunger makes a great agitator!
Prepping stores sell big hard plastic plungers with holes specifically for hand washing clothes
Thank you!
The best recipe!!! My husband loves how our sheets felt after I did them. You teach well.
Awesome! Thank you! We love this recipe.
wow love the tip
I am glad it was useful to you.
hi! does this work to remove dye transfer onto clothing or fabric softener stains? especially ones that have been tried on?
No, it does not remove dye. It does have the potential to lighten it some. As far as fabric softener stains, yes it will remove those.
CAN I USE LEMON JUICE? YOU DID NOT TALK ABOUT TH CITRIC ACID
In COOKING 1 teaspoon powdered Citric Acid is equivalent to ¼ cup lemon juice. I have not tried this using lemon juice. My experience shows that lemon juice has a tendency to act as bleach for colored clothes so if you have anything colored included I would not do this, but as for whites I suspect it would work. Please be aware I have not tried it this way. Please come back and tell me your results. Your other option is to leave out the citric acid and double the vinegar.
Buy a washer with *soak cycle*
Not a bad idea.
I don't have a lot of whites, except my sheets. lol But I will try this. Thank ya'll
Our pleasure!
@@WisdomPreserved I’m going to try and use Rit Dye remover and see if I can’t lift the color from the rest of the pants to match!
Wow!
Some areas have harder water which can also contribute to discoloration. That’s great that you have no issues where you live.
@@WisdomPreserved Sorry my comment was a bit harsh. My area has soft water, I never realised that hard water could make a difference.
@@monicas2269 No offense taken. :)
I would have liked to see the clothes after they were dried and folded. With a split screen shot for calm;comparisons .
If you go to minute 13:06 on the video you can see two a comparison with the white shirt that we held out in the beginning. It's a great idea to show a folded stack of clothes before and after. Perhaps we can do that on the next video.
Dawn is better then any other dish soap. Not sure there is any debate.
My machine will start draining water as I’m soaking, even when the lid is up!!! 😬😡 I battled with it and lost every time!!
Yes, mine (Emmaline's) does the same thing. I can't even pop it open and add a shirt I dropped without causing me grief. That is why we have found the bathtub to work so well for this process.
How about unplugging the washer when wanting to soak the laundry
I actually had to Google what laundry stripping meant.
I followed this to a T, soaked overnight and there was absolutely no change to my towels. :( Such a let down!
So sad! Did you make sure to stir regularly?
love this, but please leave the recipe here.
Vinegar 1/4 cup white vinegar (distilled) plus 1/2 cup dawn plus 1 1/2 cup baking soda Stir to paste consistency.
Wheres the manager
🔴🔴DAWN LIQUID WILL STAIN CLOTHES BLUE If you dont stir till Youre bored. I ruined two beautiful blouses and a cloth purse
How sad! Thankfully, we haven't had any trouble with that. They do make a clear dawn if you can locate it.
Should have used your broom to stir ... it would also clean your broom lol 😆
Love how well this works, but really need to let ppl know how toxic this is to breathe. Please where masks and gloves when making this mixture. Borax is well known to be extremely toxic to breathe in. Also, well known that mixing vinegar and hydrogen peroxide creates a toxic acid that is dangerous to breath and unsafe to touch. Great recipe to get the job done but please be safe out there folks!
Forgot to tell you you husband can probably take out the lid switch so you can open it when running good luck
No offense inteded but when stupid people by stupid things you see what happens
Go to a applyance store and by a good used machine
