“O Come, Divine Messiah!” is a French carol/Noël by Abbé Simon-Joseph Pellegrin (1663-1745), a French poet, playwright, and librettist who collaborated with Jean-Philippe Rameau and other composers. In addition to stage plays and opera libretti, his works included two collections of carols, published in 1708 and 1711.
Pellegrin’s text for this hymn communicates the longing for a Redeemer by a world enslaved in sin, and is therefore appropriate for the season of expectation and preparation that is Advent. The tune, however, is sprightly and cheerful, making this anthem especially fitting for the third Sunday of Advent - “Gaudete Sunday,” which derives its name from the introit for the day, “Rejoice (Gaudete) in the Lord always.”
This arrangement features verses in unison and choruses in parts, and is ideal for small choirs.
