Thanks for the shout out Wayne. Hate I missed the live stream, would have been interesting to see everyone’s opinion. I remember as a kid, it was just T-shirt and shorts. I’m sure all the kids today wear some kind of athletic compression gear. Over the winter, my cheap compression stuff worked just fine, but now that it’s warming up outside, I find myself getting overheated on the ice. Don’t know if name brand “cooling” gear would help or not.
I wear a thin long sleeve under armor shirt on top. For bottoms I wear compression pants but I wear them over my knee guards. It serves 2 purposes. 1 helps keep them in place. 2 the smooth surface on the pants makes less friction when the pads rotate.
34 Year Old newbie goalie here, I am all about base layers for added protection. 2 Jocks, I have d3o wrist guards due to getting a slight cut on my inner wrist by a player falling over me, adding in knee compression sleeves, neck guard and a dangler. Gonna add a padded shirt that has forearm protection soon...
I have an Eagle double cup jock. Took a slap shot to the cookie cutter which completely shattered the exterior plastic cup. I immediately went out and replaced it with a Titanium cup. Even it's been dented a couple of times, but at least it hasn't broken. 😥
Wow, must've been a howitzer! I always wished I had gotten my hands on some of that Eagle stuff (specifically their monster c/a, not they pro-glo gear)
Have to agree with you there, Wayne with the Eagle gear. That made some very nice and very durable equipment. I was very disappointed when they were bought out.
Depends on the weather. Being in the Southeast, if it's roller hockey, you cannot wear too heavy of a base layer when it is higher than 80°F... sometimes as little as a tee-shirt / long sleeve shirt and shorts. :\ On ice? Usually a compression shirt and athletic long/board shorts or warm-up pants.
GReat short but sweet, on the subject of undergarments, in an indoor rink I would go bare, just boxers and yes I use hockey socks to put tape over my kneed guards. but normally just a regular tee shirt.
I finally got into a good base layer. The barn I play in can be brutally cold at an outside temp of -30°c. Even at that temp I sweat buckets then get cold. I feel it's helped.
I switched up to the "cut proof" socks and pants (which are also compression) after that freak accident where the goalie got cut by skates during a game about 2 years ago. For the top I went with a long sleeve padded top i bought from Pure Hockey, which a goalie friend of mine always wears and swears by. It does take a few times to get used to as it will feel hotter in it, but it provides extra protection. As far as my knee pads I just wrap clear hockey tape around them. Of course I had to buy double of everything from my 11 year old goalie son too! I took two shots to the groin area this past Sunday night, I only wear a goalie cup, along with goalie pants, and I definitely still felt it!
I ware a Arctic Cool T-shirt that I run under some cold water before I put it on under my chest protector. It keeps me nice and cool. I have a skull cap on my head, I run under some cold water before I put it on . And I ware a pair of compression socks that go up to just below my knees, and a pair of compression shorts under my jock/cup.
My later years of playing were a pair of tights or thin sweats with a padded shirt that was under my chest protector. I also never understood why they would give me a matching pair of home and road socks every year because I never wore them. I even have pictures of me wearing shorts under my gear.
Nothing is more distracting than cold air and dripping sweat. I always wear compression pants and shirt, I tried it once and never went back. I have several full sets and just throw them in with my laundry whenever I need to. #TT I'm using the CCM Goalie mask for covid-19 and I find that it limits my vision when I look down. What are your thoughts on staying safe and masking up under your mask as a goalie?
I wear sweat pants and high socks, the sweats act like another sock and it rotates the pad really well #tt: l am a high school goalie who has never played organized hockey. I play in some different recreational "drop in" type games. I also play with some younger kids sometimes, and the speed is far slower, but l don't do any better there. Any tips on how to adjust to slower games?

I always over heat. ...... I like airflow and less restriction... I go with a light set up... But that means less protection....

@Ed Smykowski yup, even though I am done having kids, getting twice hit in a beer league game isn't fun.
