Skated(stick and puck) for the first time as a goalie last thursday, doing so again tomorrow. So excited to be in this challenge/journey. Definitely was a Lot harder than I thought, especially things like butterfly slides, they look so easy but its so awkwardly physical. I find my biggest difficulty right from the start are trying to catch every shot(I'm a soccer goalie since I was a kid so it makes sense), not being able to puckhandle at all(I don't keep my elbow out enough to keep the blade on the ice), and staying "vertical" with my body when backing up with a skater coming at me and trying to drop to butterfly...because I drop while going backwards I end up too deep and ultimately end up on my butt or with a pad stuck somewhat under me making it hard to get up. Thank you for all you've done with your content. Childhood dream, that I'm finally getting to live because of moving to Seattle.
Wayne....this is like a lob ball for me because my favorite #33 is Patrick Roy by far!!! Has influenced my gear choices, playing style, attitude and even the items I buy to hang on the wall.
This video couldn’t have come at a better time. I’m attempting my first skate next week at 32 years old. Never played hockey before, wanted to as a child, but my parents didn’t want to pay for it...had to play basketball instead 👎🏼. A couple weeks ago I did what you said in one of your previous videos, and bought an affordable set of used gear (even though it looks kind of ancient) and I’m just going to go for it. I have a two year old boy, and another boy on the way in June, and want to give them the opportunities that I didn’t have growing up. At the very least I hope they can enjoy getting out on the ice in the winter and shooting on their Dad. Anyways thank you for the tips and all the great content!
@@VOGoalie I’m not sure if I got some bad advice from the person I bought the gear from. He sold me everything but his skates, so I had to buy my own. Everything online said to get skates a size and a half smaller than my shoe size. He told me I want to go bigger, though, for better protection from puck impact. So I’m a size 12 shoe, and I was going to buy 10.5 goalie skates. He told me instead to get a size 11.5 or 12 and just wear a couple pairs of thick socks. I went 11.5 to be safe, but after testing them out during a leisure skate, they felt a tiny bit wobbly even with a couple pairs of thick wool socks. Should I return the skates and size down? Just add another pair of socks? Or am I supposed to have a little wobble for better mobility? Or is that just asking for an ankle sprain? My first game is on Wednesday and I want to be confident in my skates before I step on the ice in them with all my gear for the first time!
@@andrewfox595 hey drew, I'm also a noob. Just bought a bunch or ancient gear myself! I went to 2 different pro shops for fittings and they both said your skate should fit 'comfortably' with your toes just barely grazing the toe cap. I'm a size 11 sneaker and I went with 10d skates. I would definitely talk to another goalie or go to a shop in person if possible!

As a new(bie) goalie like myself, have a camera recording your movements. It helps a lot!
33 that’s my number but yeah easily Patrick Roy is the best 33. As a Flyers fan, I also have a soft spot for Brian Boucher for number 33
