- Organic chemistry, like many subjects in science, is percieved to be hard. Scientists are assumed to be unfriendly super smart people who speak a foreign language. However, what if you could learn any 'hard' science in 15 minutes or less? In this talk, Jakob Magolan breaks the stereotype and teaches the basics of organic chemistry in 15 minutes. Jakob received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Western University in Canada. After three years of postdoctoral research at the Eskitis Institute for Drug Discovery in Australia, he joined the chemistry faculty at the University of Idaho where he teaches organic chemistry and runs a research program focused on organic synthetic methods and drug discovery. Jakob was recently granted tenure and has received awards in recognition of his research, teaching, and mentorship of students. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I m only seeing this video to get motivated to start studying organic chemistry..😄😅😅😅

Organic chemistry was all fun and games until the exams 😩
deadass.
Naw, until reactions were introduced
Until you have to take organic 2

That moment when you literally stop orgo hw to procrastinate on UA-cam, and this video shows up in your sub box.
I'm 110% certain UA-cam is watching me
Its all "machine learning" technically.
You were probably googling organic chemistry stuff, and they were able to track that down to narrow video suggestions.
Allegra You're welcome.
Most definitely they are...
There’s no coincidence on your UA-cam recommendations, it’s only big data and machine learning
I 100% agree, but as a current orgo 2 student, the professors make it all about memorization and grades, and med schools make it all about that letter grade. I don't think we're afraid of the material itself, but of the expectations that come along with taking a course like this.
Jakob was my Organic Chem II professor, and learning from him is a delight. This talk is very indicative of his teaching style. UIdaho lost him as a professor, which is sad, but he helped me love Ochem. 10/10 professor
Yes, Jakob is an excellent chemist. That's why he left University of Idaho.
When did he leave? I could have sworn he was still there. Hmmm...
Only a few months ago, he works in Canada now.
How to memorize the reactions easily?
@@golamrabbi5560 You don't, you have to learn them, literally learn, that mean learn how they work, why, when, with what, and to do what ?
Organic Chemistry is pretty fun when you realize what’s going on
Yeah
I wish if this man could teach me organic chemistry.
You can watch arvind arora or physics wallah
You can. Go to McMaster University and sign up for his class.
@@davidkeyes1205 Is it free or paid ?
I hate it when people say "don't be afraid of this" and then just brushes through the basics like wtf dude, it's not the basics that's tough! Geez
Exactly lol... It's memorizing the massive number of equations that can get really tedious, not the basics of orgo chem lmao.
Exactly. When I read Org chem for the first time understanding it , I though what's so difficult in this? Boy was I wrong!!!! It's just like inorganic, a lot of logic but a WHOLE LOT OF MEMORY
@@nikhil4815 inorganic is more tough than organic because inorganic is full of exceptions
@@sajanaryal6932 the basic lead to memorization....if you know when to use a specific mechanism, identifying the right reagents or products from a reaction gets easy. Then the process becomes more fluid rather than memorizing lists and praying you just regurgitate the easy one (which doesnt happen but people still do)
@@sajanaryal6932 you dont just memorize you learn the mechanisms
I want to learn and and not get intimidated by courses like such, but when they accompany these courses with tests, assignments deadlines, timmed quizes, papers, the grading system, etc it's hard not to get intimidated...
sup sma Don’t lose hope and remember, setbacks will always be with us but we fail only when we quit. I have a PhD in organic chemistry but I had to plead for a passing grade in my first organic class in college. It never got easy but it was usually interesting. Hang in there.
sup sma school ain't about learnin', it's about passin' tests! My advice is read the books before taking the course. Without all that anxiety, you can learn a lot easier.
I'm 17 and for the past two years I've been studying chemistry in my free time so hopefully it will be easy when I get to college.
Lol don’t forget labs
Exactly its always fun at your own pace
Ochem day 1: Oh, look at these adorable bond-line structures!
Ochem day 2-on: You have to memorize a dozen multi-step synthesis and their exceptions for every exam.
Ochem prof: lol why you scared?
You don't really have to memorise them if you understand why and how they happen
Wasserrübenvergilbungsvirus people always get surprised when I mention this. Just understand why steric hinderance, resonance, hybridization etc help push a reaction a certain way, and you’ll be fine. Obviously the niche reactions like Gringard and Friedel-craft does require some memorization, but they still exploit the basic rules
U know chiral centres right? Now the questions i have seen are ridiculous. They will just name some obscure compund and ask how many chural centres it has. U cant understand org chem all the time. There are some exceptions that dont make sense. U never know which effect has more influence and if u give the wrong priority to the wrong effect u will get thr wrong ans
@@xcarnage8632 counting chiral centers is extremely easy if you understand the idea of chirality
@@vladys5238 counting the chiral centre was never a problem. The problem was the structure. The question expected me to know the the structure of the compund they named. The common name not iupac. Now if thats not purely memory based than idk what is
Everyone gangsta till it's oc exam day
I am watching this on exam day hahaha
Lol this makes organic chemistry look so simple and fancy... And then you study it and you realize this goes much more deep.
Although, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry were some of my favourite subjects at college.
I didn't know that organic chemistry had more content than 15 minutes of video.

This course gave me stress, anxiety, and also made me grow tremendously. As much as I hate it, I would take it again because my Ochem professor was one of the most amazing professors. So, yes! I would go through it again.
Prof showed this to us last year on the 1st day of Ochem 1, it definitely motivated me. I got Bs in both Ochem 1 & 2, which may not be impressive to others but im very proud of myself
Great job!!!
- From a biochem major :)
MrJosephAnthonySilva thanks i wish you the best :)
kareem did u go to usc?
@@alixzandrazabal1671 No ma'am, i went to a small college in Oklahoma, were you guys shown this video as well?
Good job! Even if a B is less than an A, it's still far above what the average student achieves in Org Chem. I'm proud of you as well.
I have such love for this science which made the class even more discouraging not because it was hard, but because there was a large amount of thoughts/ideas without the proper depth of explanation. O-Chem 1 literally dips your toe into the real world of chemistry with expectations to know less and memorize more. The entire semester I found myself asking, "yeah.... but why??" with answers along the lines of, "you'll learn that later". This lead to a consistant 77-78% in the class with exams that I felt as if I was being asked complex questions with provided generalized information. I am an analytical thinker and could care less for memorization because memorization and comprehension are not equal. I am not paying tuition to memorize, I am paying tuition to LEARN.
Yea a lot of memorization is needed, but is required to "learn" why some things happen. For any STEM class, it is important to not only know how to do something, but what is actually happening. So its not the case of knowing less and memorizing more, succeeding in any STEM class requires both and you will probably not do well if you don't have both.
Preach!
You've spoken the words of my heart.❤
This showed up in my subscription feed the night before my organic chemistry test.....its a sign!

If this is how O Chem were taught, people wouldn't be scared of it. This is now how it's taught nor what it's like to experience O Chem as a student. Everyone knows O Chem is amazing as a subject, but how it's taught is the problem and he's not addressing that issue in this video.
And how could he? Bad teachers stay bad teachers. We all have to learn it ourselfs
@@velkykopyto7021 for how long you gonna teach yourself ,if it’s like that why we go to university why we waste our time and life is better to study alone and work alone,A bad teacher means he is not understanding the idea then he cannot explain it .Or just he knows everything but give you nothing.
I am food science & managment student .To be honest this is my 4th time I'm taking this killer subject.. I hope I'll no fail again. Watch this video such an inspiration for me. I hope I can pass this subject.
I took it twice, dropped it and then I transferred to another college retook it and my teacher changed my whole perspective on it. I started to understand and love chemistry. I use to be scared because I didn’t understand it and hated it. I’m forever thankful for my professor changing my perspective.
You are the smartest man alive or woman. Can't tell by your name. Great drive and endurance. Most would have given up. You decided not to and believed it was doable. The environment was not supportive and you changed it. Most would have just blamed themselves and given up. You didn't allow your thoughts to run you into the ground.
It crazy how one professor can ruin a subject
"A window to which the beauty of the natural world becomes richer"
I love that! Definitely a good pep talk before taking the course
Prep talks are great precursors to prepare suicide bombers too. LOL!
Why can't this guy make organic videos? geez.. he explains it so beautifully.
the way this guy introduced organic chemistry just gave me chills
Organic chemistry is awesome and fun only when you watch a TEDx video on it. But when it comes to exams, may the force be with you!

How so?
its so simple and his speech is really clear
As someone who is going through a course that will prepare me for learning medicine in Italy- people like this is what keeps me alive and interested at wanting to know and discover more.
i feel like courses like this really need a great professor like this. my professor is okay but she's not doing the best job. a lot of chemistry I'm having to learn by myself (as im sure most people have had to do as well). explaining in this simple of a way is so much less intimidating. I also feel like when you don't understand it, you get discouraged and want to drop the class. I really hope I pass my class

Excellent! Reminds me of my Organic Chemistry class umpteen years ago.
Ochem 1 I got a 79 letter grade but a 92 in the lab, the amount of work and exams is what makes people intimidated by the course. The lab part was super fun, I actually learned the most.

As someone that is studying organic chemistry as a graduate student, I appreciate how he takes a step back to realize how much this field is so integrated into a lot of different aspects. I think one thing that scares students off to organic chemistry is that it's a different mindset of understanding this field. In organic chemistry, you learn the reactions and core concepts, but to implement those you need to think in a more critical thinking perspective. I believe that's what makes this class so scary for those that have to take it if they are pre-med, because they are used to regurgitating information but that doesn't fly in organic chemistry.
IM A CHEMISTRY MAJOR.. sorry had to say it chemistry rules
inluvwithglitter Same. You going into research?
Me too, but I fear organic chemistry 😢😢
inluvwithglitter ok?
Did u get a job
@@maroonhorizon1693 I worked in government research for a year and now I am a fully funded PhD student! Not the best salary but getting paid to get a PhD/teach chemistry is definitely the way to go. Im going back into government research after.
Organic chemistry is like a new language. You must learn the fundamentals (the letters), and once you’ve done that, you can start forming words and creating paragraphs (mastering mechanisms).
Thank you! Inspiring

Yep. I think organic chemistry is largely a memory game.

I've been confused with chemistry for a long time, but this video is like OMG to me!
This is one of my favorite Ted Talks of all time
Loved this!
I’m literally writing a test tomorrow on organic chemistry and this was on my recommendations
Astounding explanation !
Very inspiring, reminds me of a friend who quit industry for awhile to teach at his alma mata. Totally enthusiastic, dedicated and commited, a brilliant synthesis. He became totally despondent after 4 years. You either "get/love chemistry" ,or the most part. you don't. I'm not saying you can't do well,,,,,BUT...you either love it or you don't.
An excellent and inspiring talk!
Thank you. 😊
Great talk, Jakob. We miss you at UI.
to all the incoming students about to take orgo, don't be intimidated. it's really not that bad.
take my word for it when I say it's NOT that bad.
if anything, i enjoyed it much more than general chemistry.
Don't. Literally the worst class I took in college with the worst teachers with bad english on top. Oh and how often do medical students use organic chemistry? Oh they don't in the way they teach it. That's the problem. "if this is how O Chem were taught, people wouldn't be scared of it. This is now how it's taught nor what it's like to experience O Chem as a student. Everyone knows O Chem is amazing as a subject, but how it's taught is the problem and he's not addressing that issue in this video."
My advice - practice as many reactions as you can
just when i thought i cant be more inspired and fall in love with my major more than i already am ... im so in love with my major and my future with it
I'm about to take the second semester of ochem, for the 6th time. Every time I take it I spend ~6 hours a day on it, only to fail the tests. I go to office hours, email professors, do okay on the homeworks... just fail the tests. I've passed every other class in my major, but can't graduate because of this 200 level entry course. I actually like the material too, it's interesting stuff. I just wish I knew how to learn it. Thinking about having to take it AGAIN though makes me want to cry because it makes me feel like a failure.
I've a mater degree of chemistry and I've multiple sclerosis too. When you mentioned Gilenya, I really loved organic chemistry more.
Thank you for this lovely talk.

AWESOMELY AWESOME!!
This natural Vs synthetic argument should be really emphasized in the general consciousness. Just because something's made in a lab doesn't mean it's bad, likewise just because something's natural doesn't mean it's safe
