I suppose this is the first lead guitar I ever attempted....all those years ago. I very well may have practiced this song more than any other, ever. I think the advantage of tackling an ambitious song like this (and bypassing all the beginner bullshit), is that once you can play it, you can play nearly anything. F**k "On Top of Old Smokey"... I wanted to play Metallica. So, I did it.
I seriously thought I was the only one who began playing like that! In a few months it will be 3 years since I started playing, but literally when I first picked it up I was like eff all those easy bands and songs I wanna play Avenged Sevenfold and metallica and after lots of practice I was able to play lots of solos just in a few months! Now I can basically learn anything in a few minutes if I feel like trying. In my opinion when people tell you to start easy its a waste of time start hard so your mind is used to playing hard things then eventually within a year of just learning hard things you'll be up there! So tip for guitarist out there if you strive to be good start hard and you'll be able to do anything and play a killer solo like its green day haha:)
Same exact thing I did except with Van Halen Beat it solo. Very first song I started learning. It took a few months but I’m able to play it full speed now. Every song after that comes easy. also people think I’ve been playing for years and are very surprised when I tell them it hasn’t even been a year yet.
Until you enter megadeth territory, I began with sabbath since it’s my favorite band, the solos and songs became a bit too easy so I moved onto Metallica as megadeth ( my second favorite) is much too hard at my level.
Man, I really want to thank you for all the work you do ! Your videos are very usefull, no "blabla", so we can just learn the solo in the most quik way
A relatively easy solo but very well constructed. The way he switches B Phrygian and B eolian brings some special flavor to it. Kirk used it a lot at the beginning of his career. 5 stars.
I could never nail that semi-quaver lick at 25 seconds. I can probably still play most of the main acoustic melody behind the vocals with my eyes closed despite not owning a guitar since 2009. But that lick in the intro solo always stumped me even when I was practicing regularly.

Prateek Gautam Well he made up this solo. I'm sure he played it exacly like the studio recording live in the early days. Kirk likes to garnish his guitar solos now.
Prateek Gautam the playing in this video is teaching purposes on how to play tight with technique. Kirk hammet playes the Solo, with heart and feel and live u will never have dry tone such as it is here in the video. Therefore u dont play an Ibanez for bluesy solo like this, because the Ibanez guitars have a very modern dry sound but they dont add any flavour to your tone. So the Guitar is very good for learning but not for tone with decent flavour on its own. Ofcourse u can run the signal through pedals and modify the tone but the Ibanez itself has no flavour.
Prateek Gautam Where do you get off saying he can learn from it? This is his solo creep! He's the one who can do what ever he wants to with it as far as improvising. He invented it!
Start very slow (half speed or even slower) and every day increase the bpm in only one or two beats. It will take a while but you can be certain that you'll be progressing.
Best is to deconstruct parts to a minimum of problem and then atack them one by one. Best is starting just with the bend and the 7th fret note, repeat that until its comfortable to play non stop at full speed , then add the rest of the legato notes, and voila!
Awesome job. Lot's of little details i love, for example, that little extra vibrato shake you give the second bend on the 10th fret high E string at 1:18 is beautiful. Not only are you nailing the solo technically, but you you playing it with feeling. Dime would approve. Well done.
They actually prime the guitar body and dip it into a barrel of liquid with a layer of paint floating on top of the liquid. I don't know what the process is called, but you asked how, so.
