  • In this stillwater fly fishing video Curtis, Lance and Brig head up to a high country lake to catch big brook trout. They also are able to hook into some rainbow trout and pretty nice cutthroat trout.

Weird question, Did you add those connector points for the front of the apron, or did they come with it? My new Scadden doesnt have those.

I’m unsure which of the boats you’re asking about but we haven’t added anything to them as connector points. 🤷‍♂️

@@Lanceeganflyfishing I was asking about the boat Curtis was using. My new Raptor pontoon doesn't have those rings in front of the bags. I have to hook the apron to the cross bar, which causes it to slope down. I like the higher orientation you guys have.

Hi Craig, those rings came with the boat. Not sure why they would have changed it though....

“They appear to be in just one location” That sounds like spawning activity. Does f.f.f. fully indorse fishing spawning species? Or does your skillset dictate an understanding of wrong or right in these situations? Genuinely interested in what the train of thought is on a stillwater venue like shown here.

Well. They weren’t spawning. It’s pretty easy to tell when a brookie is spawning based on their colors. That’s what FFF endorses.

Dru, I appreciate your concern for spawning fish. As a general rule, I don’t like to bother spawning trout. That said, I certainly caught some back when I didn’t understand the reasons not to bother spawners, so I cannot say I’ve never caught a spawning trout.
This video however, was filmed in September. Brookies usually spawn in October at high elevations where we live. The Brookies were found in particular types of structure, but it wasn’t classic spawning habitat. The open water brought rainbows and cutts that were suspended. Banks and springs held brookies. We found Brookies in several parts of the lake between the 3 of us. I cannot guarantee that no fish were spawning anywhere in the lake since fish don’t all spawn in unison, but I’m confident we weren’t bothering spawning fish and certainly do not encourage others to chase spawning trout.

Dru: "Does f.f.f. fully indorse fishing spawning species?" Let's see . . . spawning species would include rainbows, cutthroats, browns, brook trout, golden trout, bull trout and most other trout - except you could make a case for tiger trout (sterile hybrids). Most stillwater trout that I fish move up into stream beds (gravel) to spawn. Is it right to tromp through redds in a stream of spawning trout? No, it's better to leave the redds alone. Watch for them in streams and rivers in late fall where browns and brook trout reside or would go to spawn. I saw absolutely nothing in this video that one could argue was an encroachment on spawning trout - stillwater or not.

I'm pretty sure the department of natural resources in Utah has a pretty good understanding of what to do to control fish population, and make rules every year for anglers to follow. Actually I know they do because I follow them every year on my home waters and I know fff volunteers with the department to help gather the data that they use to set those rules for the anglers.
      Get off your pedestal Dru.

How to flyfishing and castings from sitting in kayak.
I like to now samting about gears, rod, line, liders and tips.
I'm fishing large mouth bass and snook in brackish water in Florida ponds and lake's.
    Something about fly opinions.
