RDR1 as a whole is just so much more tragic than the second game. John’s thinks he’s finally escaped the life, dies, and is avenged by the last innocent person who could’ve had something outside of the cycle of violence.
As much as I love rdr2 there's just a certain feel and atmosphere about rdr1, its like the game is melancholy personifed, wandering the desert in the game while the ambient music plays just makes me feel at peace and isolated at the same time.
I agree, Rdr1 has an isolated vibe for sure. Maybe because you don't have a camp of people around you like in RDR 2, but just a few friends and allys, so John feels more alone when he's out and about

There's something about Rockstar's cutscenes that's just so... captivating. I think it's partly due to the lack of music, allowing you to focus fully on the dialogue, and partly due to that dialogue being excellent nearly all the time.
Both RDR1 & 2 are incredible western shooters but rdr1 being made when gaming hardware was still younger and far less powerful forced Rockstar to make a game with simple mechanics, a simple world along with a simple story to boot and as a result makes the game feel like a true western where as RDR2, being a much more complex and newer game lacks that same charm. For me, it's probably how the game plays out taking place in mostly wooded areas or cities where rdr1 has more baren deserts or glass lands akin to something in an old time western movie or TV show. Now that isn't a bad thing but looking back, rdr2 felt more like a drama film at times.
Yeah, the open fields and prairies around Armadillo were super serene and RDR 2 didn't really have something comparable to that. For all its limitations Rdr1 was magnificent
If you want to capture the sort of setting and atmosphere that was present in RDR2, especially the atmosphere and setting of Strawberry, Valentine, and the Grizzlies West, I'd suggest you watch McCabe and Mrs. Miller (1971), Open Range (2003), and The Great Silence (1966).
RDR1 is my favourite game of all time. RDR2 was fantastic but it felt more like a Django western (or eastern, technically 😂) whilst the first game was a pure western. Not to mention Mexico. That region of the game was always my favourite. Oh and the ambient music! That was one thing 1 absolutely did better than 2.
O.G. Legend Of The West from The West Coast. My Little Brother Share Birthdays with this Game! I Miss Freshman Year Of High School when this Masterpiece Dropped.
Call Of Juarez, Gun, Red Dead are some of the best western game titles and I think RDR1 had some few features that RDR2 didn’t have like Mexico and infinite bounties, the horseshoe overlook game, hand wrestling.
This game is a such a masterpiece in combination of game mechanics and story telling. The story is a tragedy, but it is a tragedy on many multiple scales. Many characters are tragic. John fights a hundred battles to be with his family only to have it stripped from him. Dutch could’ve used his intelligence for good but instead became a violent maniac. Bonnie stays alone to manage the ranch by herself as the only man she wanted ( John ) leaves her forever. Seth waste his whole life greedily digging for treasure. Abraham just becomes another cruel dictator like the ones he promised to fight. And finally the biggest tragedy of Jack, a promising young man that could’ve been anything ( politician, writer, honest farmer) but simply falls into the outlaw ways his family tried so hard to steer him from. Then there is the many tragedies of the societies and the game presents them masterfully. First it puts you in the west ( New Austin ) and you see how run down and backwards the society is and how the last true remnants of individualism are fading as the frontier is closing. But then it shows you Mexico and you realise how worse it could be as the peasants have no freedom and are crushed like ants. And in West Elizabeth where the government has ruthlessly crushed all the rogues and the Natives are slaughtered and disregarded to make way for a new America. The way the game introduces each new setting is genius. But even as you have enacted the final revenge the game has a great sense of loneliness as Jack rides of with nothing to do and no future to build.
Excellent analysis, you're exactly right. This game is a tragedy through and through. I think only maybe West Dickens and Irish may have some positive outlook, only because of their poor integrities as men they can make any situation benefit them
I’m playing part 1 over again now having played red dead 2 . I last played rdr1 back when it came out and damn is it so much better now. Actually taking my time and seeing John’s story playout is just heartbreaking seeing all he’s forced to go through and endure especially knowing how close at times these ppl were in red dead 2

This is so funny that you just posted this not too long ago because I'm just playing this game for for the first time. Just hit black water. When I'm done I'll come back to this video
One thing that has always confused me playing this game even back in the day, why does John come in on a boat like he’s new to the land? His whole life was there. Even his family
It would be mint if we could create/develop a fan made Landon Ricketts game set in the 1870s and 1880s and somehow tie it into Arthur Morgan's storyline. For example, Landon helps Arthur's father with a miscellaneous task or side quest, Arthur's father struggling to pick a name for his almost born boy, and Landon suggests the boy have the name Arthur after the legend of King Arthur. Just a thought.
As far I know Arthur’s Father didn’t care for him, and was just an drunk. Retcon that, would ruin his character development, since Arthur learned from Dutch. If his father would be an John Marston type guy, that would ruin the story too, since such people always pass down experience. As you can see in Undead Nightmare, and RDR2 with John.
Came here to comment that the video is timely for me as I just finished my session of RDR2, closing loose ends in the epilogue for the first time and I'm ready for the first Red Dead coming later this week. Glad I closed off RDR2 with my video for it and finishing the epilogue. Thank you for making a video about this but I'll make sure to revisit this one after RDR1 lol

Great Video, for the most part I agree with all your points, that being said. I think that RDR2 is the better version, it takes what made RDR1 great and improves on them aswell as adding new things to it. In particular the Honor system makes RDR2 so much more immersive, people will react if you are a murderer, widows of the people you kill will confront you saying now they have no income and must raise their child on their own and will refuse money you offer them. RDR1 feels dates, but I often forget how old RDR2 is because of how the gameplay feels and the details they have added.

My headcanon is that Jack became an author after Red Dead, writing the stories of the Van Der Linde Gang and his father. Those books he wrote preserved their tales and are the reason we get the games today and are able to experience their stories today even a hundred years later
Never got the chance to play this game back in 2009, so I'm happy I can finally give this a go on PC after 15 years of waiting! Shame the price is ballbustingly high.
My favourite red dead back then and still is, honestly got sick of 2 I never even bothered finishing it because I can't stand the way you hold guns along with the stupid weapon sway crap.
I am literally playing it at the moment after i finished Revolver last month, and i must say i do love really love both games, especially this one. Its not my favorite Rockstar game, but its in top 5 for sure. Map and setting is great to explore, characters are fine, minigames and side activities are great, sound and music are top notch. My only downsides are not that many dialogues during a mission when traveling with another person via carriage/train compared to GTA IV and V; more refined shop system because there werent that many upgrades to gather from them and that bug where if i fail to hogtie a person, he gets stuck in laying position on the ground and cant be hogtied/picked up/wont stand up, so killing the person is only solution or just leaving the area.
Revolver is such a charming game for what it is, but I'm very glad the series went where it did. RDR definitely has some growing pains but I think they continued the growth of the series fantastically with RDR 2 as well
Maybe because I started with red dead2 and played red dead on my switch but i didnt really feel like it was a masterpiece but im willing to watch this and see how i feel afterwards
You set the game for failure 😭. RDR 2 is better in a lot of regards, but it's modern feel probably feels better these days. But playing RDR on the switch is doing it a massive disservice
Such a great game and sad story sadder if you played both games John tried to do what Arthur said don't look back but he couldn't out run his past that Ross I hate him so much for stringing John along he never had any intentions on letting him off the hook just used him to do his dirty work and put him down when John outlived his usefulness. This was the first game I legit cried at the first time I played it when Abigail was crying over his body I lost it same with Arthur in 2 the way Rockstar can make you feel for these guys it's incredible I hope we're not too much longer from the next Red Dead Redemption entry like you said either as Jack or something new.
I think Ross was a scumbag of course, but he was straight villainous for going after John at the end with an army. In my opinion if they tried to take John in, he would've went to prison rather than get gunned down. It's too the game forces you to go out swinging and shooting first, I think surrender should've been an option at the end. But then we wouldn't have seen Jacks vengeance either
I feel like $50 is worth it for what's offered: high resolution, high frame rate, convenient platform. Maybe don't get it if you played it before, but for first time players or content creators $50 isn't bad
one thing about jack once you get to play as him he is wearing what is mostly a US army uniform (campaign seton hat and you can see the US brass buttons and the leggings)of the time he had the perfect move kill Edgar and skip off back to the army 1915ish we were gearing up for WW1 as the military seen the writing on the wall and was starting to build up so they wouldn't ask very many questions Also i dont think a red dead 3 would work for jack as it would have to be in the post ww1 roaring 20s a time where the west was tamed tho you could center it around probation and the gangster era but that would put the game around the later 20s which would put jack loser to 30
I never got past the mission where you attack the fort. Every time I would start the journey to said fort, my ps3 would crash. Really enjoyed the cheats and just being an outlaw for fun tho.
before canon was such a thing we knew john was red and Bonnie was annie , just a re thinking, and wen rdr1 dropd we knew red was a legend of the west before johns time, our imagination filled in the blanks, now everything detail has to be constantly spoon fed to me leaving no room for me. boring is what stories are now
This game feels more fun than RDR2. The over realism in RDR2 takes me away from the fun of it being a video game sometimes. This game in all honesty too felt like a more REAL historical experience than RDR2, since Rdr2 was too preachy about modern politics
RDR1 as a whole is just so much more tragic than the second game. John’s thinks he’s finally escaped the life, dies, and is avenged by the last innocent person who could’ve had something outside of the cycle of violence.

Never got the chance to play this game back in 2009, so I'm happy I can finally give this a go on PC after 15 years of waiting! Shame the price is ballbustingly high.
yeah $50 is crazy for a port
5:12 LOL not literally a "father and a daughter", it's a priest and a believer
My favourite red dead back then and still is, honestly got sick of 2 I never even bothered finishing it because I can't stand the way you hold guns along with the stupid weapon sway crap.
14 years - thought I had something with my eyes when I saw that
The ending of Red Dead 1 had me feeling depressed for a few days after
*Inhales deeply* "DAMN YOU"
I just got an ad for Red Dead Redemption on a video ABOUT Red Dead Redemption.
Lmaoo
RDR definitely has some growing pains but I think they continued the growth of the series fantastically with RDR 2 as well
Jesus your John got shot in the face damn that was brutal lol
You do get a cool horse if you achieve the lowest honor level. Some kind of Black Death horse. Looks really cool.
Rdr1 is just beautiful
I am old now… 😂 14 years? Game feels like 5 years ago.
Red dead 1 was such an important game and went on to inspire games Like AC Black Flag, Kingdom Come Deliverance and Ghost of Tushimia.
Bro wtf I’ve never seen John get shot in the head like that :( I guess I kinda mirrors how Micah went down on top that mountain
Took that shot to the face like a G
20:30 Rockstars cougars r famous for their encounters even if they're millions to 1
Maybe because I started with red dead2 and played red dead on my switch but i didnt really feel like it was a masterpiece but im willing to watch this and see how i feel afterwards
We now know that a genre defining masterpiece is not worth full price 14 years later.
I feel like $50 is worth it for what's offered: high resolution, high frame rate, convenient platform. Maybe don't get it if you played it before, but for first time players or content creators $50 isn't bad
one thing about jack once you get to play as him he is wearing what is mostly a US army uniform (campaign seton hat and you can see the US brass buttons and the leggings)of the time he had the perfect move kill Edgar and skip off back to the army 1915ish we were gearing up for WW1 as the military seen the writing on the wall and was starting to build up so they wouldn't ask very many questions Also i dont think a red dead 3 would work for jack as it would have to be in the post ww1 roaring 20s a time where the west was tamed tho you could center it around probation and the gangster era but that would put the game around the later 20s which would put jack loser to 30
I adapted The MacFarland family for D&D.
Good Party defends. Bad raids.
That's actually super cool, Im gonna give that idea to my DM
Nice
It would be awesome if you did a video on 2000s game called Second Sight that was on the PlayStation 2
I never got past the mission where you attack the fort. Every time I would start the journey to said fort, my ps3 would crash. Really enjoyed the cheats and just being an outlaw for fun tho.
Dang! You gotta check the full game out
This game is amazing, Bonnie #1 bea
When will it be released on Android and IOS ?
RDR2 is a great game but RDR1 has that vibe
I can't explain what it is but i love 1 more than 2 even though 2 is clearly a superior game
amazing video but it's driving me insane why is your John Marston not wearing gloves in the cowboy outfit?
before canon was such a thing we knew john was red and Bonnie was annie , just a re thinking, and wen rdr1 dropd we knew red was a legend of the west before johns time, our imagination filled in the blanks, now everything detail has to be constantly spoon fed to me leaving no room for me. boring is what stories are now
17:36 That's not what animal husbandry means.
What do you think about "Bloodrayne 2"?
This is just my headcanon, but i believe the story of revolver is true but the way it's portrayed in the game isn't how it actually happened
22:01
I ONLY use free aim. 😅
This game feels more fun than RDR2. The over realism in RDR2 takes me away from the fun of it being a video game sometimes.
This game in all honesty too felt like a more REAL historical experience than RDR2, since Rdr2 was too preachy about modern politics
Red Dead Retrospective
Bro... That's good, might steal that
Rdr1 was CREEPY. Hard to say why, but many of the missions were creepy..hell, even the strangers music cue was creepy.
A whole hour of Mr.Hammer. im gonna listen to this during work
Preciate ya my man 🙏
