My buddy bought me this game. He said "It's just like Yakuza, but took place in Hong Kong and has little difference". While it is true that Sleeping Dogs has simmilarities with Yakuza series, Sleeping Dogs has its own unique things that make it special for me. Also Wei has some hardest line I ever heard. Yeah it's really weird I've seen a few in the past couple months. Which is especially odd for a game this old, but like I said at the end, there are 1000 videos and we need 1000 more. Maybe it'll make square enix take notice that we want a sequel
it's genuinely insane how well it holds up over a decade after release. Either we haven't come that far in terms of open world games, or it's still a testament to the time and effort put in. Prolly a bit of both honestly.
If that’s the case pretty much every military game is a clone of itself as well but your definitely right I think a lot of people just wrote sleeping dogs off an didn’t even try to give it a chance
I remember reading about True Crime Hong Kong in Game informer and being hyped for it and then being disappointed in its cancellation but I’m glad it got to live on as Sleeping Dogs.
I'll never forget my first playthrough of this game man. I was on the EDGE OF MY SEAT almost the entire time wondering how it all was going to end without Wei ending up either dead or in jail lol. And they tied it all together in a pretty believable way. I still go back and play through this game about once a year. It just hits a sweet spot for me. ❤
Perfect analysis, enjoyed every minute of it. It's a pity that this masterpiece game ended as a one-off. Ultimately, it comes down to the sad fact that most gamers prefer playing repetitive, primitive and usually online-focused shooters, rather than games with a complex story and an open world like Sleeping Dogs, Mafia or even GTA. People pay a lot of money to keep playing GTA Online for 10+ years, with simple missions, little-to-no story and lots of microtransaction payments. That's why Rockstar hasn't really been pushing for GTA6 or even a proper DLC to the GTA5 in all these years. If there is no real demand, there will be no offer.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster as a little kid played it for one week, then never played it again. But after 10 years I decided to buy this game and now I can say this is definitely one of the most underrated games of all time.
Recently beat the story a few weeks ago. All i can say is 10/10 masterpiece. Truly believe Sleeping dogs is way better than grand theft auto. Screw Square for not giving us a sequel. Jackie deserved better...
This game got me into Bonobo and Ninja Tune records. Very underrated soundtrack that went extremely well with its world, and didn’t feel tacked on for the sake of just having some music. Ramping off any car in a bike never gets old. Really great game. I remember following it when it was still a True Crime game and was saddened when cancelled, happy when picked back up and blown away by the final product.
Sleeping dogs holds a special place in my heart. When i was 18 living in my first apparament my ps3 broke and was unable to read discs i basically only had sleeping dogs in digital that worked me and my roomate spent months taking turns playing untill i eventually was able to afford a new ps3. I lived in a small ski village so i couldn't just go out and buy psn cards and didnt have a credit card back then so buying more digital games wasnt much of an option
Funny, I just replayed this game and yes, it's still a blast. I always try to unlock Bruce Lee's jumpsuit as soon as possible to play as a killer banana.
I never knew it had such a tumultuous development. It always felt like a very professional and complete game to me. Amazing that the developers managed to pull it off with all the chaos around them.
Agreed. It baffles me that Activision ever cancelled this project, if it was mostly complete at the time they saw this game and thought it'd be better to cancel than release. Thank goodness for Square buying the project
Sleeping Dogs is one of those games I replay to completion every couple years and still have a lot of fun with. I think I've played all the DLC except for that Zodiac Tournament one but it looks really interesting. It would be cool if Square Enix gave the series another chance not just some online spinoff.
it's astonishing how real the world is, there's proper driving and people even use the indicators on the cars, there're food vendors, some random events, for instance some thief may steal a lady's purse, you can chase him down and return the purse to the lady and all that. For instance, in the said Night City traffic does not function. If you try to follow the rules you'll just end up stuck in one place, because traffic lights seem to not be functional...
I’ll add another comment…. For it’s era, this is a game you can tell the creators poured their hearts out in this game JUST like Red Dead 2. This game is so much fun to play in 2023 and that’s saying something…. I urge everyone to play this game.
Police undercover is actually a very common topic in Hong Kong movies. One of the most famous movies is Infernal Affairs series. Check it out if you're into this game!
One of my joys in life is replaying this game every couple of years to see if it still is as good as a remember and it almost always being better. An actual gem.

You do all sandbox games a major disservice by putting the label, "GTA clone" onto them. It's a major reason why the genre is in the state that it has been in for over a decade. Too many people use that label to write off the games because they're not GTA.
I always knew this game was gonna be deemed underrated, Back in 2013 my homeboy who "knew everything about every game" was humbled when i pulled this gem out the closet🤣
Loved the video bro! Great review! I bought my dad a PS4 for his birthday a couple of years ago and I got him Sleeping Dogs to play on it (we both loved the True Crime series). He instantly got hooked into it and it’s become one of his favorite games
It's a fun game with great characters, graphics, music and Hong Kong was a new setting for me to explore in a opened world game when it was here in 2012. Before it was released there were a lot of great live action sort movies or ads of Sleeping Dogs that were pretty amazing as well. Here's hoping for a Sequel in the future.
Another phenomenal video from you I’d love to see more long form videos in between the shorter games you normally cover. My only gripe is that you skipped over when Jackie killed the low level drug dealer it caused him to fully second guess gang life and want to get out but that’s when he got gutted like a fish. The added context of him finally wanting to get out only to never get that chance is what made it hit harder for me personally.
Thanks man! I'd like to do more long form stuff in the future, just has to be a game I have a lot to say about haha Yes I agree with that on Jackie, him killing the guy before his initiation and then getting kidnapped shortly after that made him want out, it made his death hit much harder to Wei because I think Wei had intentions of getting Jackie out once he finished his operation imo.
@@MrHammers With the way you structure your videos and your own personal flair you put into them I am open to watching whatever game you cover in a long form video. @@UndisputedBillyBadass So? We could get lucky and get another great game. At worse, franchise stays dead. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Sleeping Dogs is already dead. They just need to play it safe by keeping the same gameplay, expanding the story (just copy some Asian action moves plotlines) and adapting the graphics. This is not a Def Jam FFNY situation. They tried to release another title for a masterpiece way too soon and also changed the formula. Totally irresponsible by the developers, which ultimately killed the franchise. Shenmue 3 didn't rush anything in terms of time, but too many changes lost what made fans like that franchise. If Sleeping Dogs 2 doesn't kill what we like about Sleeping Dogs 1, it might not suck.
i miss playing this game, i grew up with this game. After my rlly old pc broke, and i got an xbox one after it released i was so happy to be able to get Sleeping Dogs again. even though that was years ago, i still love the memories of sleeping dogs
This game never got the respect it deserved. We need a damn sequel already. I am a massive fan of martial arts movies and Hong Kong action movies from Hardboiled to The Raid. This game was very reminiscent of a Jackie Chan and Chow Yun fat movie mixed with jet li and Donnie Yen and I was all here for it. Such a gem of a game. Mainly it was like a Chow Yun fat movie in terms of the subject matter.
Did you every play Stranglehold? I’d recommend that game if your a fan of movies like that, it’s literally a sequel to Hardboiled 🤙 also just an awesome game
I really should play this game I started it years ago but just didn't have the time to play games so it never got the time it deserves great video as always Mr Hammers
I used to play the hell out of this game, back to back. The way they pay homage / references to movies I grew up with made me love it even more, the fighting, atmosphere, music, I never was bored. I used to jump of the motorcycles purposefully so I could ragdoll through the city after I completed the game, I used to complete it a lot, probably one of the only games that I 100% completed. The DLCs/Add-ons were pretty cool too, sad they cancelled the second one. Really unfair. Would’ve been awesome driving around Hong Kong with your friend / other players fighting about.
I have never revisited a GTA game after the newest entry, Sleeping Dogs was different, ran it back on PS3,ps4,ps5 ,PC and Xbox, if they release on switch, it’s a day one purchase. 9/10, just wanted a little better gunplay, even with that , this game was amazing!
I beat this game maybe like a year ago, year and a half ago, I was gonna stream this game yesterday, and I said nah ill do watch dogs 2 instead, and now you're really making me regret my decision, this game is soooo good, it's a phenomenal game and not enough people have played it, not enough people that I've talked to anyway
Thanks for making this retrospective, it's a great nostalgia trip. As 'True Crime: Hong Kong', it was cancelled by Activision in Feb 2011 (not 2010). FYI, there were originally 3 dates per love interest but these were cut to one each in January 2011 as production pressure increased. For Amanda (voiced by Emma Stone), the second date involved shopping with her and the third date you invite her over for dinner (you had to choose what best to cook for her).
It looks incredibly impressive for a game that came out over a decade ago. Yet games like Cyberpunk still fail to feel like more than just a backdrop for player one to interact with it. It’s in my backlog and I can’t wait to eventually get into it.
Tbh you lot might agree but I think dogeyes should replace lee as the main antagonist at the end because he actually has history with Winston and wei and lee is some random
Dogeyes got Wei's sister hooked on heroin in order to bring her into Big Smile Lee's prostitution ring, so I think it makes sense that Lee was the final boss
Another great game that you talked about and i grabbed and played. I listened to maybe 10-15 minutes of it, grabbed the game and just finished it(i am not a happy camper right now) and now im here to watch the rest of the video. Grab this game, Hammers is not wrong! Well lets be honest every game he's talked highly about a game ive grabbed it and loved them.
&t=26m31s This is quite true. There are two types of minibuses in Hong Kong. The green minibuses can only go on a fixed route. Usually they are run by a company, which has made contract with the government. The red minibuses do not need to run on a fixed route. If they wish to join a popular route or depart from a popular terminal, they might need to pay the so-called "enter route fee" to the triad. As a local, I was surprised when I played the minibus mission a decade ago. Really admire that the production team had some deep study into Hong Kong culture. The only flaw is that the minibus tagged "Hang Hou Village" in reality goes between the village and HKUST, both are not located on the Hong Kong island side.
I remember playing and completing every single thing in this masterpiece of a game. Its like you are playing as Bruce Lee in a Hong Kong style GTA game, and you rely more on hand to hand combat than firearms. but it also offers much more. its one of the best open world games, and definitely the best martial arts game, but sadly it didnt get the recognition it deserved
One of the biggest reason why I love Wei as a character, is we all know he's a cop and if the situation calls for it, he will follow the letter of the law. BUT, if you're irredeemable, or just overall a piece of shit, he will definitely introduce you to a painful death.
This was one of the games I got for a week on rental as a kid. Such a fun game, even after beating it I started a new game just to drive around and take in the setting. So ridiculously detailed even compared to some modern games
bought on steam on sale for 3 euros. finished it within 30h of gameplay and just wanwt to watch someone talk about the game. thx for the vid. great game.
Honestly one of the best action game I've ever played from the Xbox 360 era. It's definitely not a masterpiece when it comes to gameplay, but the story is definitely solid and oh, the open world design is definitely doing its justice to Sleeping Dogs when you're not taking it too seriously. The fact that you can ran over hundreds of people on your 'Made in China' Lamborghini and the cops wouldn't be able to catch you anyway is what cemented this game as the best open-world action game for me so far*
I play tested Triad Wars. It was definitely more of a “mobile” style version of the base game. A lot of it felt like more of the same, with the main difference being that you choose a gang to start with and try to gain more territory. It has cool base building like mechanics, mostly just trying to spread your influence for more side income. The main flaw I felt was you were just a mute nameless protagonist running the crime aspect of things only. It had some potential, but makes sense why I never saw anything come of it.
I never played it myself. But from the gameplay I saw that's definitely the vibe I got from it. Seemed a little gimmicky given how great Sleeping Dogs was
The fighting is so entertaining. It reminds me of the combat in the ac games and Batman. Although in Batman he snaps to them it still feels like a rush and I love it.
The shooting is NOT COVER BASED. You’re supposed to jump over the cover so you get slow motion and you also get more slowmotion if you get headshots. The game is actively trying get you away from the cover. It even tells you this EVERYTIME you’re behind cover in this video how can you miss this???
The more I play the game... the more I watch this video... the more it pains me that we will never get more games like this. It surely would have been a good way to start a franchise.
Man when I find out when this game was supposed to be the game true crime Hong Kong I went bought this game and loved it the fighting, story, and characters love it I heard a crazy story that the developers went to a club that were part of Yakuza they would be allowed to make it if they drink some poison or something like that haha Hope one day we get a sequel but who knows there probably someone out there making another sleeping dogs

There was an online version of this game around 2015-2016 but they took it down
@@calamorta no, keep it dead. that’s what makes looking back on it so great
Every big gaming event no matter what they are, I hope for 3 announcements.
A bioshock sequel
A dishonored sequel
And a sleeping dogs sequel
I swear to god I had a dream of you playing this and sharing it already lol anyway i love that chapter 1 is just Pork Bun
You're the second person to think this is a reupload! LMAO gotta start off with a pork bun always 😂
39:13 "This is another *GUT* wrenching part of the game" Ba dum tss
😏
"A man who never eats pork buns, is never a whole man!"
Boy have I been waiting for you to do sleeping dogs! Love your content man!
Thanks dude!
Dude, last year I did another play through and it’s not disappointing… this game is definitely a masterpiece.
i miss playing this game, i grew up with this game.
@@believeinmatter fuck yes amazing game

I really should play this game I started it years ago but just didn't have the time to play games so it never got the time it deserves great video as always Mr Hammers
Thanks my man. Highly recommend this one
I never forget that one food vendor...." You're Not A Whole Mun If You Don't Have A Pork Bun...!"
🐖🐖🐖🐖🐎🐎
Oh damn crazy, first GmanReviews uploads a Sleeping Dog vid and then this channel. Sick
Great video as always, nice seeing you talk about Sleeping Dogs. It deserves so much recognition
i absolutely adore this game
what did we do to be blessed with two MrHammers videos in a month?!
I'm trying to capitalize on what little free time I have to make more content haha
11 years...i need to sit down
Gmanlives uploaded one a week ago and now you? Damn I need to download it again and play on my ps4. Helluva underrated game. Much props
Yeah that was interesting timing when he uploaded, I was halfway through my edit and saw it go live haha
Total Overdose review needs to happen.
I have finished this game a few months ago. What a great experience.
Id say definitely stream this one after WD2 haha. It's a great time, and it doesn't take super long to beat
Agree, I played it in 2020 and to this day Sleeping Dogs is one of my favourite
Better than most nowadays games
Thanks for making this retrospective, it's a great nostalgia trip. As 'True Crime: Hong Kong', it was cancelled by Activision in Feb 2011 (not 2010). FYI, there were originally 3 dates per love interest but these were cut to one each in January 2011 as production pressure increased. For Amanda (voiced by Emma Stone), the second date involved shopping with her and the third date you invite her over for dinner (you had to choose what best to cook for her).
Can you do Dead to Rights and Saints Row?? Seems right up your alley.
The menu music slaps so fucking hard
It looks incredibly impressive for a game that came out over a decade ago. Yet games like Cyberpunk still fail to feel like more than just a backdrop for player one to interact with it. It’s in my backlog and I can’t wait to eventually get into it.
Tbh you lot might agree but I think dogeyes should replace lee as the main antagonist at the end because he actually has history with Winston and wei and lee is some random
Dogeyes got Wei's sister hooked on heroin in order to bring her into Big Smile Lee's prostitution ring, so I think it makes sense that Lee was the final boss
Great video editing!
after 27 minutes i just realise its not about how cool sleeping dogs but its entire story of sleeping dogs
Appreciate ya my dude
Game is going for 5$ on PSN!!!

This is quite true.
We definitely deserved a trilogy with this 😢
Awesome review, this game its totally an underated gem
Thanks dude 😁
One of my favorite 2010s 360 titles. Absolutely gorgeous to the eye still.
I remember playing and completing every single thing in this masterpiece of a game. Its like you are playing as Bruce Lee in a Hong Kong style GTA game, and you rely more on hand to hand combat than firearms. but it also offers much more. its one of the best open world games, and definitely the best martial arts game, but sadly it didnt get the recognition it deserved
trying to get the platinum for the definitive edition rn, lets see what it brings
Sleeping Dogs #1 video game in the World!!!!
One of the biggest reason why I love Wei as a character, is we all know he's a cop and if the situation calls for it, he will follow the letter of the law. BUT, if you're irredeemable, or just overall a piece of shit, he will definitely introduce you to a painful death.
He's a person who does the right thing, but he doesn't necessarily follow the right side of the law all the time lol
goat hammers again gman did almost the same vid about sleepy dogs, I miss true crime they should remake la and new york... soundtrack is fire!
Great minds think alike haha the true crime games were definitely fun in their own right as well
This was one of the games I got for a week on rental as a kid. Such a fun game, even after beating it I started a new game just to drive around and take in the setting. So ridiculously detailed even compared to some modern games
bought on steam on sale for 3 euros.
finished it within 30h of gameplay and just wanwt to watch someone talk about the game.
thx for the vid. great game.
Hell yuh another great video. And I got my yt member shout out! Loved this game never knew the history of development was so fucked.
Thanks for the support my dude!
Seemed a little gimmicky given how great Sleeping Dogs was
The combat system was amazing. Easy to pick up, but took skill to master. The animations were top-notch and still holds up today
A Sleeping Dogs video from Gmanlives and then you?
We truly are blessed
Wait a minute..is this a reupload
Nope! Fresh new video haha
Man when I find out when this game was supposed to be the game true crime Hong Kong I went bought this game and loved it the fighting, story, and characters love it
I heard a crazy story that the developers went to a club that were part of Yakuza they would be allowed to make it if they drink some poison or something like that haha
Hope one day we get a sequel but who knows there probably someone out there making another sleeping dogs
Wish this got a sequel sooooo badly. One of my absolute favorite games. It was so fun exploring Hong Kong
Damn it a tradition to watch any recent sleeping dogs review video
I absolutely loved Sleeping Dogs. Played the Original and 100%'ed It on Steam. Loved It so much I ended up 100%'ing the Definitive Edition on Steam too. :)
One of My favourite Games from the 2010s. Highly recommend It!
"DAMN YOU THAT BOY AQUAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!" - Me just trying to have a nice drive in Sleeping Dogs
Loved the content. Absolutely loved the game. But starting a video with 2 happy puppers licking the air, absolutely grants a like and comment from me
Yes, it has the most live open world ever, and the combat system is gorgeous. It has many limits due to his dev problems and the story turns at the end but it rocks. A must play.
Fantastic video 🔥
I have owned this on two devices, and didn’t get far in either play. I need to change that, I realise now. This video made me realise what I’ve been missing.
Probably one of if not the most immersive open world game. Only game that comes close is probably Assasin's Creed 2 with it's depiction of Italy.
