Fun fact: According to Bob in his book, every part of this story is true EXCEPT the egg in the bath. The bit about recording with Chris Rea on an island and the gold doily, which they found questionable, all actually happened :D

He (Chris Rea), explained on TV once that he wrote "Road to Hell' whilst stuck in traffic on the A19 after deciding that they didn't need to stop at the last services for cigarettes as they were only ten minutes from home. I think he said it took four hours.😊

Bob Mortimer was part of a double act with Vic Reeves which was completely surreal. He does a great fishing programme with Paul Whitehouse. Try to get hold of his autobiography it is brilliant and all the WILTY stories are there in context.
Chris Rea is famously quite a sullen man, which makes this even funnier. His most famous song is "Road To Hell".

Fun fact about Bob - he’s a fully qualified solicitor and he represented Jarvis Cocker (singer in the band Pulp) when he was arrested following him protesting against Michael Jackson at the Brits.

One of my favourite Bob WILTY moments. I must have seen this about 20 times, i always burst out laughing when Bob says Chris Rea told him 'i popped an egg in there for you '. Crazy as this sounds, one day, i plan to pop an egg in my bath lol

I love this show, just watching David Mitchell sitting there being sarcastic the whole time is so entertaining.
And a rich representation of accents around the UK, David Mitchell being posh southern English upper middle class, Rob Brydon South Welsh, Rhod Gilbert valleys Welsh, Lee Mack (Northern), Sarah Millican(Geordie) etc and Robert Webb who's actually from Lincoln but learnt to speak with a refined Southern accent
What's more is that Bob and Sarah live maybe 40 miles from each other and have vastly different accents. In the U.S that's the distance from North Dallas to Waxahachie. Imagine if you lived in Dallas, barely drove outside of Dallas and people started talking with a New jersey accent.
British eggs don’t have salmonella and they are not stored in fridges either. The reason being is because GB is a small country the distance between farms and shops is quite small too so they don’t spend days or weeks being transported.
We also don't wash our eggs like Americans do, which compromises the natural protection of the egg.

I can remember decades ago there use to be an Egg shampoo/ Body wash that was sold in Tubs. Bob' playing it as if it is just a matter of fact whether it is true or not is priceless. 😄

This story is true except for the egg in the bath. Bob did record a single with Chris Rea. Rea later sent Bob a gold doily in the post, in lieu of a gold disc.
American's will not know what a doily is...
I've seen this many many times and I'm still cracking up.
In the UK we don't have salmonella in eggs. As far as I know Americans have to keep eggs in the fridge right? In UK we store in the cupboard, Eggs last 3 weeks.
In Australia I've only kept them in the fridge. They're not chilled on the shelf though so I suppose it's not required. My cousin has a chook pen so weekly I just pop by and grab some now! They wouldn't last 3 weeks at mine.
When a egg is layed it comes out wet (I forget the name for it). When that wetness dries it forms a protective barrier around the shell making it unnecessary to put in frig. In the US, that barrier is washed off making it necessary to put in frig.....or so I have been told.
I think there was a case of Salmonella from egg decades ago

You know Jodi is right- it’s not that obscure- women use egg white face masks (they’re amazing) and an egg yolk is the best scalp conditioner, packed with protein. So an egg bath isn’t such a bad idea 😂 Also you won’t get salmonella unless you drink your bath water.

You have to eat it to get salmonella....
If you recall it's on an island in the Thames. So as a private studio it will have facilities, you're not jumping in a boat everytime you want the toilet or need to wash or even bath. So it's not unreasonable to have facilities available on site.
...sure it was a least a little feasible but if you recall....it WAS bullshit!
In the UK it would be hard to catch salmonella from an egg as our chickens are all treated to prevent this. This is why our eggs are kept at room temp rather than the fridge.

Bob Mortimer, is a British National treasure, he's just wrote a great novel, called The Satsuma Complex, a great read, also he does a fishing programme with another funny comic & actor Paul Whitehouse.
Jodi is played by Carrie-Anne Moss.
Many pro recording studios have residential facilities, baths included. Bands don't like to have to be in and out all the time.
Or showers..The Rolling Stones had a recording studio in Suffolk called Octopus...
In the UK our chickens are vaccinated against Salmonella so our eggs dont contain Salmonella. Which means we dont have to refrigerate our eggs. Eggs are sold in the supermarket on the shelf and are not refrigerated. When eggs are laid they come with a natural coating which protects the eggs and in America your eggs are washed which means they need to be refrigerated plus as the chickens aren't vaccinated you have a high chance of Salmonella if theyre not cooked properly, we dont have that problem in the UK.
You really should watch these in order so there are no spoilers.

Claudia Winkleman is funny on wilty. The best short clip is called does Claudia label everyone she meets as an animal. There is a 25 minute video which covers everything and it is probably the best one to watch. There are a few short ones on UA-cam too.
You guys come stay with me when you visit the UK. There will be a chocolate on your pillow fresh clean towels.

Salmonella doesn't exist in the UK. We have better hygiene laws.
Bob as well as being very funny and a national treasure is also very clever, there is a quite famous recording studio on an Island in the UK that has produced some very famous records, it is also a converted house that bands have used to deliberately isolate, he also did at least a couple of charting songs in the 90's with Vic and bands/artists, so it is told in a way that creates that doubt.
According to Bob, the whole story is true, apart from the egg part.

Bob also appears in an unlikely successful tv series where he and a fellow comedian just go fishing even peopl not interested stalling fishing love this because of the interplay of the two guys both who have had health issues and were in recovery. It was a real hotbed of fashion & music, in the 1960's, & frequented by all the 'cool' 60's characters, like The Beatles, The Stones, Peter Sellers, Hendrix etc etc etc!
Eel Pie Island was a recording studio, but I think he might have been referring to Sol Mill in Cookham, which Chris Rea I think owned at some point.

Washing your hair with egg is a great conditioner, albeit with both the albumin & yolk. And Bob did have some experience with hair through his family's long tradition of haircutting.

You have to remember that almost all of that story was true, only the egg part was a lie. Bob and Chris Rea are old friends. Chris does have a song called "Let's Dance" which he re-recorded with Bob for a football match at Wembley, and there is a recording studio "Eel Pie" which is on a island in the Thames, so it probably was recorded there.
