From London, 14 hours 15 minutes - From Manchester 14 hr 45 min - From Edinburgh 17 hr 10 min. Sarah is from Londondinium - BUT guess what, the flights go via Madrid in Spain. There are shorter flights if you go direct but costa lot of money (see what I did there)
Actually the majority of the stories are lies, but the most popular ones to watch are the weird that are true. I'm from England, so i watch this show, and love seeing reactions to it. Random info, in case you aren't familiar with her, Sara Pascoe is best known as a stand up comedian, but is a regular face on comedy panel shows.
Yes. A lot of other American reactors focus on trying to (earnestly) guess whether it's true or false, without realising that this is barely consequential! The destination is neither here nor there; the journey is all!❤

As a pilot, you'd be surprised. From Hong Kong the difference between Sydney and Melbourne is only a dozen or so miles from memory. Costa Rica from Europe to me would be a huge leg! My first proper airline gig was as a second officer mostly on the A340-600 flights which SUCKED in summer, daylight the whole time over the Artic. The glare was bad enough now sit there for 12 hours.

I remember seeing this when it came out, and it was the easiest round ever for me. I knew it was true, cos the whole story was part of Sara's standup show that I had seen shortly before at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Fastest direct non-stop flights from London to Costa Rica are about 12 hours. So 14.5 hours on Sarah's trip is just about plausible. Btw - flight time from London to Malaga (main airport on the Costa del Sol) is around 3 hours.
There's a lot of things to take into account when flying as well and even a not massively strong headwind could add an extra 2 hours onto a 12 hour flight, maybe that was accounted for, or maybe the cruising speed of the particular aircraft they were using was slower than the fastest available.
You are not idiots. The people leaving those remarks are however!

A flight to Spain is roughly 3 to 3 1/2 hours so the 14 1/2 hour flight (which is easy with flight corridors and a dogleg over the USA) is reasonable.
At Christmas all flights do go crazy expensive by normally a cheap flight with multiple "layovers" from the UK to Costa Rica is about £300 and Spain (Costa Blanco, Costa del Sol etc) is about £60... So Christmas was the only reason the story passed credibility checks...
I think the crucial point got lost there because of Rob. lol We Brits go to Spain every year, in our endless millions over time because it is only 2 hours and the nearest Country to guarantee the sun and the holiday resorts are more British than Spanish. Only 2% of Brits go for The Spanish Culture and without the sun Spain would be as popular as Iceland or Slovenia . The key point is that we go to The COSTA Del Sol or Costa Bravo or Costa Blanco or Costa Dorado so, under duress,it is an easy mistake to make until you realize,on the plane, too late.

I just looked up flights out of curiosity.. from London, they're mostly about 14.5-15.5h to San Jose, including 1 layover of about 1-2h, which is usually in the states somewhere (NY, Houston, etc).

11.5hrs to Cancun from where i was in the UK but has to stop in Newfoundland for refuelling, was only 8.5hrs back as we joined the airstream coming back so picked up extra speed.
They have tried a US version of WILTY, but it wasn't a success, the contestants were too earnest, and took it far too seriously. Which killed the comedy stone dead! The Steve, who used to be russet, is Steve Davies, 7 times world snooker champion. Snooker is a bit like pool, except the table is about four times the size of a pool table.

It's just not an American show... maybe if they had English hosts, it could work 😅
America destroys every English show!
The American version of Fawlty Towers was even worse.
The man called Steve was at one time the World Champion Snooker Player Steve Davies. Just as a bit of information I have flown to both Chile and Peru from the UK and it takes around 17 hours. You have to fly to Amsterdam or Madrid first.
LHR to Costa Rica is around 15 hours with one change at New York or Houston.
I've been on a plane which had the tracking (map thing) interesting but only flying to Switzerland, this was a turbojet so a slower plane, if you ever fly to Switzerland and it's a jet, don't land at Bern, frighteningly short runway, they throw anchors out of the back door no joke 🤫 I was unaware that we had to call you stupid ❤️
Yeh. I think going to Central America would need a more direct routing but staying close to Halifax and the East coast because of Two Engine restrictions; Where California say to London can use the more efficient Polar route. My only long flight was London to LA, and return from San Francisco which is virtually the same route as Las Vegas (which I drove to - in 1998!)
From the UK - 14.5 hrs. From Scotland - 17hrs !!

These things happen... I once flew from Madrid to (what I thought to be) Gatwick (Sarf Landin)... Landed at Frankdurt. Turned out to be a great night!

Flight time London to Costa Rica - 14 hours 16 minutes including the stop.
It's 9 hours to fly to New York from Ireland. England is further away than Ireland and Costa Rica is further away than New York. The 14.5 hours checks out.
13.35 London to Costa Rica . And 8 hours vegas to Costa Rica according to google .
Costa Rica is 3000 miles as the crow flies. Aeroplanes go about 4000 miles cos they have to go in an arch

You are correct we can not know everything or on the spot but the word is used to say you did not know empowering word , I am sure they have been in the situation , but if it does or when it happens to me i shrug it off and move on .

Only the original statement has to be true. They can then twist things from the story to throw people off.
It's not a direct flight the planes fly straight across the Atlantic then down the American coastline. It takes me 9 hours to Cuba.
I don't know which part of the country you live, obviously in a large country like yours, flight times would vary, but my long distance girlfriend is from Texas, and the shortest flight i could get would be 14 .5 hours to Houston, and still a 2 hour drive from her.
They did say Las Vegas.
The flights are not in a direct line some take a more Northen route and then down the East coast

If you think about the fourteen and a half hour flight time... It would genuinely take you about eleven hours on your own flight home guys... The average flight time to Costa Rica from the UK is eleven hours and forty minutes... So some flights will be longer... And some will be shorter... The quickest flight i could find... Was ten hours and fifty minutes on a British Airways Flight... But because Sara was traveling during the Christmas Holiday Season period... Some extra time would be added to her flight time... For the inevitable stop in the US... Where some passengers and their luggage... Will be leaving the flight to make their connecting onward flight to their final destinations... When the aircraft would then be refueled and cleaned... As well as being restocked with refreshments for passengers who will be continuing their onward journey to Costa Rica... So yes... I can see that flight time being genuine... Especially during the Christmas Holiday Season period guys. 👍
There is almost certainly not a direct flight to Costa Rica.

The stories have to be true, they are contracted to tell the TRUTH

Not all flights are direct - the deals are on the non direct ones

Sara has written a book too, she is a brilliantly funny comedian and has a side to her where she raises women’s issues in a semi serious way that is informative and interesting

The reaction to the result from the panel, especially David Mitchell, are nearly always entertaining. Maybe maybe make your interesting comments when completely finished. Flipping back to the very end doesn't work well.
They don't get offended it's just banter, we're all like this...just not as witty...
I believe you are both very clever people, and a wonderful couple, but, you do live in a Country which voted in trump as the 45th President of the USA - I rest my case on lack of intelligence in the general population (by the way in the UK, Brexit happened and even Boris Johnston became Prime Minister - we maybe should not be too critical of some misguided American Citizens )
My friend in Hither Green is delighted that Brexit happened because in his South East London street,the house where a combination of ,mainly,Rumanians and some Bulgarians lived has reduced its occupancy from around 17 people to just 12 in the 3 bedroom house..
