I dont get nervous for either training or races, however I do get phantom injuries a week or two leading up to big races. Before just about every half or full marathon I've done I've had an ankle or knee 'injury'. Then on race day no problem
Woahhhh! Dude, this is it! I’d recommend Challenge family over Ironman. They’re in it for the right reasons. And totally legit offer here but I’d coach you for free to get you there. It’s what I do! I’ve been patiently waiting for you to come to the dark side 😂 and Kofuzi too. You all come here eventually 🏊🏼♂️ 🚴🏼 🏃🏻♂️ 🤟🏼
Zone 1 recovery at 4:25/km. I'm sure most people would like that to be their hard pace. Good job Ben. I'm a triathlete so seeing you do one would be very interesting. I've only done Ironman and not Challenge but we don't have the Challenge option in South Africa so I would not worry about the difference too much. Pick a time and location that fits you. Good luck!
Love the info about volunteering also that chat with that chap about your first marathon time- 4.01. Makes me think how we can all improve over time. Great vid Ben & Sarah. Hopefully bump into you guys in Battersea one day!
Thanks for the video , brings back memories as I used run in Battersea Park when I lived in Queenstown Road in 1988 -1990. I was living in London on my OE back then (from NZ). Still running 30 years later, now ultra running but had a stint at Ironman I totally recommend it as an amazing challenge.
Wow guide running amazing ... Those people helping are amazing and the runners so brave . Seriously i panic walking trough my own house with the lights out scared to bump my little toe in to something
Such good vibes here, that video immediately put a smile on my face :) Watching both your videos and journeys is very inspirational, your honesty makes the videos very relatable some of your little comments here and there makes them fun to watch as well, thanks for sharing your story!
Really appreciate your videos, Ben. Very inspirational and motivational. I’ve got my first marathon at the end of this month (only a low-key local one) but your attitude to it all keeps me level-headed and focussed when I’d otherwise be psyching myself out and getting down about the bad sessions. The only reason I started running in the first place is for how good it makes me feel, not the times, distances or kudos, so your content helps remind me of that when I’m too wrapped up in training plans and what other people are doing/achieving. Thank you!
I really like when you show on screen what the workout looks like. I have some workout from you that I really like. Thx for video and your positiv attitude in all your videos
Thanks for the videos Ben. For me, the weeks before the marathon (I’m doing Manchester this year) is a time to rejoice in the training you have done, enjoy tapering and the feeling of being fit. I felt like that this morning. Nothing better. Good luck in London.
I was in Battersea Park yesterday! I always hope I bump into you or Sarah on one of my runs! Did the Virtual London Marathon (1st one) at Battersea Park last year so it has a special place in my heart! :D Aiming for a 3:30 on the 3rd of Oct!
Ironman!! I've done Wales x2, Bolton and Barcelona and there's nothing quite like it. Support at Wales is unbelievable but the course is brutal. Be great to see you on the start line Ben 👍
Hey Ben. I start my first full Ironman next Weekend. Hope for a sub 12h. A good tipp is try a Olympic Triathlon first then a middl and than a full. Don´t just jump straight into a full. All of the Luck for everythng you do. Love the Video as always!!
Good luck in the London Marathon. I ran yesterday my second marathon, Tallinn Marathon. Goal was SUB 3:30 and hit it with 3:29. 6 months ago in the trainings, the goal was to do sub 4 hours. But 5-7 trainings per week got me to the fit level, where trainer said, you can do sub 3:30. First marathon was 4:00:12 two years ago. Thanks you for the all content and motivation. I really appreciate it 🙂
So refreshing to hear you say, Ben, that as runners, we're nearly always experiencing some sort of niggle! So true! Is it just me or does everything start slightly hurting 3 weeks out to a marathon?! Hopefully see you for the pre-London shakeout!
Momentum is definitely with the Challenge family at the moment! Might be best to start with a 70.3 and work up to a full distance. Challenge Lisbon is closed roads and flat, so a good one to start with. Early in the season too 😊
I'd definitely recommend Outlaw over Ironman or Challenge. It's a great family like experience. My wife and I have done 7 now, between us (a mix of 70.3, full, and relay). They're brilliant. I did Bowood, just yesterday, and it was awesome as always!
I really like what Challenge Family are doing for the sport. There will probably be some cool local or independent triathlons out there as well, in the UK, but also on the mainland. Good luck for London!
There is a triathlon in Geneva every year, normally in May I think. Its actually on this weekend for 2021, due to Covid. But it could be a good warm up triathlon next year for a mid year full Ironman. They have sprint distance, olympic and half distance races available. I am doing Ironman Wales in September next year and will most likely do the Olympic distance in Geneva in May. Easy for me as I live 15 mins from Geneva, but still only a short flight from London.
Hi Ben, I got into Tri's after too many running injuries trying to get to a marathon distance in my races. I recommend starting with a sprint, then Olympic, then Half Ironman (as far as I got) before launching straight into an Ironman. Also. get some technical coaching on your freestyle technique. There's nothing quite like swimming in the Thames after a storm - yuck! Looking forward to seeing how you go. Good luck.
Nice one Ben best of luck for London 🙌 Great idea getting the bike, well worth doing long rides for low impact aerobic building as well as maybe triathlon. Beth Potter (British triathlete) is a great example of someone who went to triathlon and cycles far more than runs now but yet got the fastest known (unofficial) time for a road 5k, ironically or maybe fittingly, after moving away from being a middle distance runner.
Yes triathlon is great, long distance triathlon, including Ironman brand races, an excellent challenge (i've done four) with less drafting problems than short distance, but cycle touring can be a great challenge too and you experience more of a country (I've done LEJOG and NZ end to end). Last year did a big backpacking challenge, which I'm sure has given me more resilience to avoid running injuries. touch wood. Try different things I say.
@@BenParkes I'm sure you'll have looked this up, but they also do a half Iron distance, in May, at the same venue, which is a great way of getting used to how things work. When you add in having to setup all your bike and run kit in transiton, and navigating your way through on race day; a practice before the main event is definitely beneficial!
Hi Ben, I can’t emphasise the importance of getting a bike fit before you start logging the miles, especially as you build up to Ironman training. In the same way you might run a 10k and half marathon as a build up before a marathon, I would do the same for an Ironman and enter an Olympic and middle distance race as key milestones in your training program. Good luck at London marathon; I’m training for my first standalone marathon in Seville in February. If you need any triathlon coach recommendations then let me know.
Guy! I ran Seville in 2020, you’re going to LOVE it. Amazing city and amazing race. I’m so jealous. I’d love to experience it for the first time again!!
Thanks Guy.. will get the bike sorted as soon as I can afford it. Know it's important! :-) And will certainly look for some practice events in the build up to the big one.. wherever that may be. Thanks for the message and wishing you all the best for your build up and race in Seville!

I get SO NERVOUS before a race, every single time. Don’t know why. I think I just love running on my own and where there are lots of people around me I panic!
what's to gain in these sessions with less than 3 weeks to go? Isn't it this point you usually say the hay is in the barn? I'm doing London too so trying to plan out the next couple of weeks also.
My London training has been going great until my long run yesterday, which I had cut short 5 miles. My legs were dead! Got home and all day I felt really sick, bloated, really tired. Didn’t do anything different, I don’t feel great today so have taken a rest. Any idea what this could be? Fatigue, burn out?
@@kierenkd Don’t know. I’ve always ran fasted as it’s just what I prefer and never had any issues, felt great on my 22 mile last Saturday pacing was spot on, didn’t take fluid I never do. I don’t rest much, it could have just been fatigue/burnout, or yes, possibly dehydration??
@@BenParkes hi, you never ran a half prior to ur first sub 3? Like few weeks or months ahead? Just curious. I will be in london in 3 weeks. I trained for sub 3 and thats my goal. My current HM PR is 1h23
Triathlons/Ironman is a time-waster and really it's the LONG hours is the person who wins in the end (top 10-20%). The spark is initially nice which hooks people in but like the record books on the internet, all my times have disappeared. Why? They don't matter, these companies just disappear. In my 20s I missed all my best running times and I wasn't really training that hard could run 3:15s. You run a 1/2 marathon at 3:30 km pace that looks good. Get off the bike and run 4:00-4:30km min pace (if you're lucky) in half ironman, you may think it's good but it's just relative to that sport because of the fatigue. You're not achieving your "run" goals just some arbitrary fatigue-led sport.
Is your range of movement restricted in dorsiflexion? Just looking at your hips tipping forward and spin arched and wonder if they might be compensating
I dont get nervous for either training or races, however I do get phantom injuries a week or two leading up to big races. Before just about every half or full marathon I've done I've had an ankle or knee 'injury'. Then on race day no problem

Injured at the mo, training for a half marathon :( will be in the crowd at London Marathon though! Hopefully see you there
Hope you get that injury fixed soon Ryan! See you at London!
Ironman would be interesting, but what I'd really like to see is you (and Sarah?) take on UTMB! Watched some of the livestream this year and it looks amazing. Hoping to maybe one day do OCC myself if I could get a place...
Will be there next year!! We've both got entries for 2022!
If you are going to do the Ironman distance you can’t beat the experience of an Ironman event. Fantastic challenge to set yourself
The only time I get nervous is for a race I've never ran the route of. If I've ran it before I'm absolutely fine.
At about 10 days to go you can't really alter anything.. but this far out you certainly can!
Getting REALLY excited now😁
Great video Ben, wise more to stick with the next% 2’s
We get the parrots in Glasgow too... the most northerly parrots in the world :O
"I'll let you go". The classic English runner colloquialism :-)
Ben can i ask u a question.. Do you ever feel like running is simply your identity? Like if that makes sense?
Insane speed
I didn't even think phantom injuries were a thing. It makes sense though
I get nervous for races. I can crush workouts but not perform as good in my races sadly 😕
My London training has been going great until my long run yesterday, which I had cut short 5 miles. My legs were dead! Got home and all day I felt really sick, bloated, really tired. Didn’t do anything different, I don’t feel great today so have taken a rest. Any idea what this could be? Fatigue, burn out?
dehydration?
@@kierenkd Don’t know. I’ve always ran fasted as it’s just what I prefer and never had any issues, felt great on my 22 mile last Saturday pacing was spot on, didn’t take fluid I never do. I don’t rest much, it could have just been fatigue/burnout, or yes, possibly dehydration??
When ur threshold is his active recovery lmao
Shout out to the guy who is going for 3:30 marathon
Alphaflys feel much more comfortable for anything above 10k. Legs feel so much better afterwards!
Agree, but glutes hurting more for some reason. Feels like Alphafly low drop makes me use different muscles
What was ur half pr when u did ur first sub 3?
I'd never ran a half before I did a sub 3
@@BenParkes hi, you never ran a half prior to ur first sub 3? Like few weeks or months ahead? Just curious. I will be in london in 3 weeks. I trained for sub 3 and thats my goal. My current HM PR is 1h23
Woohoo, cant wait to see how well you do it a tri. Be prepared to get the addiction bug 😂
U did not race , what happen?
What shoes will you be running in on the streets of London?
I'm not sure yet!
Ironman Wales!
lets go for full distance ironman! or at norseman triathlon 🤣🤣
haha.. I think norseman is a step too far!!
Go for a triathlon with a small swim unless you are a dolphin
Always vaporfly
I prefer the Artist !
Why are u so secretive about your hr during runs?
ironman 🙌
Is your range of movement restricted in dorsiflexion? Just looking at your hips tipping forward and spin arched and wonder if they might be compensating
You need to loan Sarah your new bike so she can keep up!!!!
It’s got to be an iron man😂
Triathlon yes, but not ironman as they're an awful company 😢 I'm sure you'll smash it 😊👍
