    1:43 What’s the real problem?
    3:30 Fluorosis
Did you know that cavities are the second most common disease worldwide? The root word for cavity means “hole.” There is a hole in your tooth. The bone is dissolving and breaking down to the point where there is a hole in it.
The teeth are actually supposed to be indestructible. You don’t have cells that are constantly being replaced on the enamel. But, there is one thing that will destroy your teeth. It’s a certain type of bacteria. There are a lot of friendly bacteria that live in the mouth. As you consume sugar and other carbohydrates that can ferment, the population of this type of bacteria starts going higher and higher until it’s dominant. When it ferments sugar, it creates acid, which dissolves the bone creating a hole.
When you consume certain refined carbohydrates and sugar, you’re feeding the bad microbes, and you’re getting the plaque-forming bacteria, which then causes decay because it’s creating an acid.
Are brushing and using fluoride really enough to prevent cavities? What about the food we eat?
There is actually a condition called fluorosis. When you expose a young child to too much fluoride, it can weaken the teeth. It can affect calcium metabolism in the body. The best thing to do may be to cut out sugar.

I have lost almost half of my teeth. Later I realised Sugar is the culprit. I completely stopped white sugar. Cavities came to a halt. Side effects of stopping sugars are:
    1. BP came to normal levels
    2. Weight loss and become fit.
    3. HbA1C came down to 4.75
    5. Back pain gone (Osteoporosis)
    6.hsCRP came down.

One of the surprising facts about going on a Ketogenic Diet (for me) was the complete absence of tooth pain once I stopped eating a high carb diet! I have a mouth full of broken and missing teeth with root canals, missing fillings and gaping holes. I tried eating something that contained a small amount of sugar an BAM!...my mouth was aching and I was in total and complete pain again. So, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that my diet was the main reason for my lifelong tooth issues. I am on the waitlist to see a Dentist to get dentures. So far, I have been waiting 5 years! So glad I discovered my lifelong addiction with sugar and carbs was killing me in more ways than I ever knew it could.

I like your content and I appreciate you addressing this! First, as a dental professional, sugar/carbs/constant snacking affects enamel. I preach water between meals all the time and snacks like veggies or cheeses. If you drink anything with sugar and/or acid, rinse your mouth out with water. You only need to brush, softly, 2/day-for sure before bed. Fluoride is needed systemically while tooth buds are forming. Their is a magic number so that their isn’t too much or too little. Some communities have to take fluoride out because their is too much naturally. BTW, fluoride is a natural mineral. And yes, it does help with sensitivity and helps heal demineralized enamel. Enamel effected by fluorosis is dark and actually stronger. Most white you see, like after taking braces off, is demineralization and needs fluoride or an MI paste to strengthen it back up. You are right, fluoride isn’t the save all, but it does have a purpose. Back to bacteria in the mouth!....Periodontal Disease has a whole slew of other critters and can be even more destructive. Again, thanks for addressing this.

I've heard that oil pulling with coconut oil daily has successfully achieved remineralisation. However, you cannot do this if you have mercury amalgam fillings... I found this out the hard way :(

I’m surprised by the pro fluoride stance. I’ve used tooth powder with Xylitol for years. Never a cavity. Also, SLS in tooth paste can cause canker sore for some people who have a sensitivity to it. Suffered many years with very large, painful canker sores in my throat and mouth, until I figured out it was a reaction to SLS. SLS is a foaming agent used it all kinds of products - shampoo, soap, etc.

I wass born in a time that San Antonio had fluoride in the city water supply. I had tooth discoloration, and - holes- in my teeth. Yes, cavities. I still have an unusual discoloration in one lower eye tooth. My Mom asked the dentist what it was from and he said “The water”. Lying sack of amalgam pushing creep. I finally have a firm grip on my oral health, my own teeth and am so thankful to learn everything Dr. Berg puts out for us!

I've been using a toothbrush common in African countries that has been used for millennia called a miswak (a bristly root). It's toothpaste free and it's really helped me pay attention to the way my teeth feel. I got sick this week and decided I was a bit too tired to spend the time using it (It takes about 2-4 times the time of "normal" brushing depending on your diet and how often you brush) and I'm pretty sure it only made my sickness worse. I had terrible breath and candida (the white stuff) started appearing on my tongue. I'm back to using it and my mouth already feels so much better.
