Canon EF 11-24mm f/4 USM 'L' lens review with samples (Full-frame and APS-C)

  • Here I get the chance to take a look at the widest angle rectilinear lens Canon have ever made. 11mm on a full-frame camera is simply cavernous, so this zoom lens is potentially very versatile (as well as expensive) - can it perform?

    I’ve owned this lens since 2015 and am very pleased with the excellent results I constantly obtain with it. I began using it with the Canon 5D3, then the 5D4, and now with the 5DS-R. Highly recommended!

    I'm shocked how well an 11mm zoom F4 lens performs wide open and zoomed out. That's amazing. Makes the asking price look pretty fair.

    • @technicboy5917
      @technicboy5917 2 роки тому

      Yeah sort of, the sigma 8-16mm for aps-c cameras is almost as wide as this lens yet so much sharper. And very affordable.

  • @MacPhantom

    Nice review, as usual! Being an APS-C camera owner, I'm actually interested in such wide angles, but of course not in this lens (too expensive, not fast enough).

    Hi Chris,
    first I would like to thank you for your reviews, they are a fantastic tool to learn about equipment. I watched this video plus the sigma 12-24, which is a lens that competes with each other. On the sigma video you did not use the chromatic correction which i find a bit unfair since both have to be tested under the same conditions. Anyhow It seems that Canon lens suffers from a lot of softness when compared with the Sigma. Do you agree? thank you so much again. João

    Hi Chris. I have watched virtually all of your excellent videos and one thing I've noticed is that full frame lenses don't seem to be as sharp on your APSC camera as they are on your full frame 6D. Would you say that is generally the case?

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 років тому

      Generally, yes. While an APS-C camera takes advantage of a lens's 'sweet spot' in the centre of its projection, the resolution on APS-C is so much higher that is still poses a serious challenge to its optics.

    Thanks for the review. I opted for the Sigma 12-24mm Art for Interior architectural shots. Prior to that, I've used the Samyang 14mm f/2.8. I was and am still happy with the Samyang. I think if one is on a budget, the Samyang will do just fine as it is an excellent lens, but I'm also equally happy with the Sigma. I've noticed the Samyang shoots cooler than the Sigma as well. Is it worth the extra 2 mm difference? I could go either way, especially considering how expensive the Sigma and the Canon ultra wide lens are at the current price.

    Hey Chris! I could reallyyyy use your help and advice.
    I have a canon EOS 100D and I want to buy a relatively cheap lens.
    I've been stuck between the EF-S 55-250mm 4-5.6 IS and the EF 70-300mm 4-5.6
    I would use it for wildlife and animal photos (so I need a good zoom and background blur) and I take photos of my dog (who runs a lot too) and I would use it for nature and maybe close-ups (flowers etc)
    Which would you say is the better lens for all round photos or maybe a different type of lens?

    • @christopherfrost

      Get the 55-250 STM. Save up for the STM version if you need to

    Way too expensive! f4 and no IS? I bought the canon 11-18mm f/4.5-5.6 is stm for 160Euro. At 11mm it's max aperture is f4.5 and you can win More than 1 stop with IS turned on. I know this is only for APS-C. You can also wait for the IRIX 11MM F/4.0. For M series the Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM.

    • @filipsefcik4634
      @filipsefcik4634 7 років тому

      Don Segers because this is fullframe lens! That your lens is for crop sensor, that means that 10mm on your camera is like 16mm on fullframe thats that point why is your lens soo cheap (and your lens isn't weatherproof and pictures are worse that with this lens)

    • @synriser6742
      @synriser6742 7 років тому +1

      I know I have to consider the crop factor on an aps-c.But worse doesn't mean bad.I know this lens isn't razor sharp, but I think it is good value for money. Not everyone can afford expensive glass. I think we are spoiled now with those high res images.Where back in the days of film, people didn't care about the noise and the sharpness that much. Everything has to be bigger and better. It's all about taking great pictures and having fun. You can still shoot crappy pictures with expensive gear.
