My whishky journey started with Laphroaig 10. Since then I have hardly cared about other Scotches, Bourbon or Irish whiskeys. Love the peaty smoke of this single malt!! Just drip, stir, sip, savor and let the island of Islay show in your lowball glass.....Slàinte mhath folks!!

I love the smell and taste of smoked peat but there is a strong asphalt taste to the whiskey. It's also a different kind of smoke taste. I love smoked mozzarella and there was one brand that had a wonderful flavor. Thinking all brands were the same, I tried one from a different company and it had a rougher smoke taste that wasn't pleasant. That's how I find this scotch whisky. There is also that medicine-like quality (fenolds?) to it as well. I've yet to discern that sea breeze taste in the whiskey...or any Islay whiskey so far. I honestly thought this would be my favorite based on the smokiness.

Laphroaig 10 year old was what got me into whisky. I think it varies a lot between people what you get hooked on.
The smell of newly tarred boat that I got when I first smelled this whisky was what made me fascinated with it.

Glenlivet I had first, once I had the Laphroaig 10 I knew I'd never be the same...drinking the ten year right now. I just bought the Chivas 12 and I like it too. I've had Ardbeg and Glenmorangie Lasanta, Laphroaig Quarter Cask... Laphroaig is always going to be a keeper around the house. Something about the peaty, smokey poison reminds me of the briny sea and unforgiving gales!

1:20 me and my friend were introduced to this whiskey as noobs by some old bar-dweller, we've never drunk whiskey before (well we did but never liked it, always thought it was too strong), but from the moment we drunk laphroaig we were hooked. we loved it precisely because of it's smokeyness. we would always drink beer and wine, never strong alcohol because it's not drinkable, it dehydrates you and burns your throat. Laphroaig is the first ever strong alcohol (+30%) that I truly enjoy drinking

At least 20 years ago, me and friends had a special dinner in a small nice restaurant with all lightly smoked small dishes: from cheese to fish, from pasta to meat. They served lot of cold water and half glass of this Laphroaigh. I was worry to become drunk early anyway it didn't happen and that dinner was one of my best ever, as I perfectly remember now, after so long time.
It is an alternative way to appreciate this "soft" but rich whisky, gathering small bites of selected smoked food

The first whisky I genuinely liked(before I had only tried cheap blends)
First bottle of whisky I bought which then led me into other scotch whiskys. Then some Irish and then bourbons etc.
I remember how exciting it was, a completely new world of taste opened up. And very much thanks to you Horst!
    Thank you

This week was my first contact with Islay peat whiskeys. My first glass of Laphroaig 10 was overwhelming and somewhat disappointing. Two days later I tried Lagavulin 8 this time and was equally amazed and fascinated. I did not know that smoky aromas could marry so well with a sweetness that little by little it was coming out of its hiding place behind a smoke screen. Today I just gave Laphroaig 10 a second chance and this time I have managed to tune in to what this whiskey is capable of offering. It has taken me to Scorsese's movie "Shutter Island" over the cliff, into the cave with the fire, into the gloomy corridors of a drug-scented asylum. And suddenly, in two drinks it has turned into a placid beach gathering on a starry night with friends around a candle. And the anise, raisins and candied dark fruit have come out behind the same mysterious smokescreen from the beginning. What a trip, friends!

I had my first sip watching this video , gosh you waiting so long after the nosing to take your first sip .... I wanted to follow you and enjoy the review . One of my favorite whiskies i ever tried ... as you said the nose is so much stronger than the palet , still very very smoky , notes of dirt if even say , like you dug a hole in your garden and put your nose in it . Not too much bite very smooth , surprisingly sweet ... sweet brioche , freshly cut grass , a touch of bitterness I can’t describe at the end . Pretty short finish , but a very intense experience !

I'm very impressed with the whisky. I've been drinking The Glenlivet 12 and Highland Park, which are both wonderful in my opinion, but Laphroaig is very different to the nose and I very much enjoy it's flavor. Lots of character.

This is the only scotch I drink. It's not the best, but it's brilliant in that it simply refuses to compromise. It's smoky as all hell and it really doesn't care if you don't like it. This is who it is, and it will not settle for mediocrity just to make you more comfortable. And I absolutely love it.

  • @ChainMiles777

    I never drank scotch before.
I'd only had a shot or two before of whiskey and bourbon in my life.
I opened it, took a quick amatuer swig, and I love it.
I didn't really know what experts meant by 'smoke' until I drank this.
It comes up after one heavy sip frequently and really just smell/tastes like an old inside-smoking house smells like. - BUT it tastes/smells good!

  • @adzakadol3601
    @adzakadol3601 5 років тому +2

This is one of the best and most unique whiskeys out there. Feels light while swirling in the mouth. Smooth, yes, peaty, yes but also heavy flavour of the casks. Combine them together, and the taste reminds you of a very old book. Sounds odd, but strangely pleasant. Salty, yes, but once again very, very smooth. The after-taste is pleasant. The flavour of alcohol doesn't linger, it is washed away by the intensity of the above mentioned. I find this more easy to drink than the likes of lagavulin, glengoyne etc.
    An absolute gem.
    I rate this one 10/10

When I first had Laphroaig, smoke in this whisky was almost unbearable for me. Me and couple of my friends drink a bit, then we left bottle for week or two and try it again. I don't know if it was me or bottle, but it felt far less intense second time. Like whisky get some air and it helps mellow it down. Is it possible or am I "daydreaming"?

"Don't give it to a newbie"
Yeah... my wife and I tried our first single malts last night. Macallen gold first followed by this. We both said if we'd tried this first we wouldn't have bothered with scotch again!
Reminded me of the taste in the air of an "old man type" pub pre smoking ban.
I concluded if I were a smoker I'd probably have really enjoyed it but not for me. I'll revisit it in time when I have more experience.

Laphroaig was always my favorite until I discovered Ledaig. Anyone who loves Laphroaig ought to do what they can to hunt down a bottle of Ledaig 10yo. In my area (Denver, CO) 1 in every 5 liquor stores will carry it but most will order it if you ask.

Very good whisky! For sure a unique one. This is probably the 4th or 5th single malt I have tried and the first with lots of peat smoke; I was a little nervous about the ones with heavy peat but I like this very much it is subtle especially after the first taste and like you said it develops nicely! This probably won't be my favorite scotch whisky but I do like it a lot and wont mind keeping some around. The mouth feel is very interesting too almost silky.

I tried this the other evening, and I did like it. Ive only recently started properly appriciating scotch whiskies like this, and I got the Talisker 10 for Christmas which I am really enjoying. In the talisker, I find, whilst it still is very much a maritime malt, almost salty sweetness like salted caramel, beneath the beautiful peat smoke. I found the laphroaig 10 very much a savoury malt. It reminded me of the smell you get if you walking down a beach or beside the sea with the added aroma of a peat fire burning in the distance. The sea, salt air, peat and seaweed. For that reason I do prefer the talisker over this, although both are works of art!

This was my go-to scotch when I lived in Maine. One does not have to sniff from the glass to appreciate the nose. Whenever I drank it, my daughter could smell it from across the room. In addition to the taste, more than any other scotch I have ever consumed, there was a distinct intense warm sensation that descended from my throat to my stomach as it went down, followed shortly after my a full warm rising glow. As such, it is the perfect scotch for those who live in the more northerly latitudes. In that regard, it might be the quintessential scotch.

I like strong flavors and particularly love anything smoky including rauchbiers so Islay scotch is a no brainer for me. That said, I like the lighter friendlier scotch too. I just love scotch. Guess I'm a newbie as this is my first single malt, but I've been thoroughly enjoying my first in dram of this stuff! Saw one of their ads and had to try it.

I appreciate these reviews, i can tell by Horst’s reactions that he isnt really a fan of this whiskey but he still takes the time to go through it and pick it apart.

I don't know what a 'campfire' tastes like, but Laphroig does smell like an expired campfire or what my clothes smell like after I been around a campfire or I have been chargrilling for a while.
I was surprised that it didn't hit me as much in the taste. It had more sweetness then I expected. Also, I usually get a peppery feel from most Scotch or Canadian or Irish Whiskies on the front of my tongue but Laphroig had absolutely none of that. So, yes - a strong smell but a smooth non-burning taste.
Just one note. I had two drams at a birthday party. One before dessert (cake) and one after. Having it after definitely took away the sweetness. I preferred it before the cake.

This whisky was my first taste of peated whisky. Definitely a taste to get used to, but anyone enjoying a single malt whisky every now and again should try at least once.

I love the reaction on your first sniff and it gives the impression that it should be one of the the strongest whiskies. Lagavulin 16 are suppose to have similar peat smoke and ardbeg even stronger, but you seemed to have a milder reaction on those. How is that possible?

    • @BlueZirnitra
      @BlueZirnitra 3 роки тому +4

Lagavulin is not all that strong on peat. It's more rounded and balanced, Laphroaig and Ardbeg are more similar in their intensity.

    My first smokey whiskey!
Tcp, Smoke, fresh fruit and a very long smokey salty finish and aftertaste!
I'm a novice with only a 15 year Glenfiddich, 12 year Highland Park ,15 year Dalwhinnie and a Glenfarclas 105 tasting but I found the Laphroaig 10 very accessible and very interesting ! Ardbeg or Lagavulin is next!

Horst, I would consider myself very much a newbie only ever drinking typical blended Scott Whiskies, but I tried this as my entry into single malts after reading that it was very well regarded and I LOVE IT, didn't find it to be too much, was truly pleased that I picked up a bottle, now I am picking up Lagavulin 16, Laphroaig Lore and Ardbeg 10 based on watching more of your reviews, thank you!

If you have a Whiskey glass like in the video and you pull as much as he does in it, maybe even a little more. How much water should I add´ then ? 3-5 drops, less or more?

I'm a newbie, and I started with intense, smokey, peaty single malts (my first was Talisker Storm). Only ones I like!

I couldn't drink whisky for 40 years until on a visit to Scotland I tried with reluctance this malt. Since that day I have been hooked. But on Isla whiskies only. So to some strange tastes like mine, as a first try it could just occasionally get someone hooked.

Hello from Finland 😊 What whiskey would you suggest, i bought a carafe, personally i am not biggest fan of whiskey 😅more vodka guy. But wanted a carafe, that my friends can have glass of whiskey when they visiting. They like some smoky whiskey, and actually i liked also some, don't remember what it was.. many people tells that this one is good, so this whiskey i am searching, isn't only for my amateur mouth, some whiskey that will impress my friends would be great to find in that carafe. Thanks you, nice videos you have 😊

Does "rotten tang" mean the same thing in Scotland than it does in Ohio? I like scotch, and I have tasted rotten tang(because of drinking too much scotch), but I'm not sure I want to drink scotch that tastes like that.

I love Laphroaig because of the very peaty smokey flavor...it reminds me of Connemara which is the most smokiest most peatiest Irish whiskey there is..
