  • In this compelling episode of her True Crime series, psychologist Emma Kenny unpacks the chilling events of the Lindhurst High School shooting, an alarming incident that plunged the community of Olivehurst, California into an abyss of sorrow and despair.
On May 1, 1992, the everyday bustle of Lindhurst High School was abruptly shattered by the destructive actions of former student, Eric Houston. The 20-year-old, armed and driven by a bitter sense of resentment, embarked on a harrowing killing spree that culminated in the deaths of three students and a teacher, and the injury of numerous others.
Emma meticulously dissects the terrifying timeline of that fateful day, drawing upon an array of sources to paint a comprehensive picture of the incident. She explores the background of Eric Houston, his troubled history, and the possible motivations that led him down a path of violence.
With her professional insight, Emma delves into the psychological complexities of the perpetrator, shedding light on his state of mind before, during, and after the massacre. She also discusses the wider implications of the incident, examining the issues surrounding gun control, school security, and the support mechanisms necessary for survivors and their families in the aftermath of such an event.
This somber episode serves as a chilling reminder of the potential dangers lurking within seemingly safe spaces and the devastating impact of unaddressed mental health issues. As Emma guides viewers through this harrowing story, she reemphasises the urgent need for robust preventative measures, early intervention, and comprehensive support systems to guard against such tragic events in the future.

Not only does Emma have the gift of managing to captivate us with the way she delivers the content, she is qualified to explain how people get to the stage of committing the crimes that they do. I’m new to your channel and cannot tell you how much I appreciate your coverage of all horrors that happened when governments decided to lock vulnerable people with their abusers during the pandemic. I never thought I’d be so alone, abused (in every type of way) and scared. No one would listen. I escaped with nothing but my puppy and a few belongings. You’re the first person to acknowledge the risks (fatal) that so many were subjected to. The day I got out, my abuser pulled a machete on me… it escalated so quickly. I’m in treatment for PTSD and a whole list of sequels I was left with. My psychiatrist has been seeing pro bono and I’m grateful. Thank YOU for vocalizing all the thoughts and feelings I haven’t been able to articulate yet.

Emma! Would you consider adding Scott Kologi to your list of subjects? When he was 16 he shot and killed almost everyone in his family on New Years eve in 2017. He was just sentenced last year. Very bizarre and sad case, sounds like he had serious mental health issues going on and had told both his grandpa (who has schizophrenia) and his mom that he was thinking about shooting them all. His mither told him not to talk to his therapist about thise things because hed be taken away and put in a mental hospital. His description of what happened sounds like he may have been dissociating, and afterwards, he didn't seem to fully understand that he murdered people. He understood they were dead, but also thought if he got treatment he could go home and they'd have a homecoming party for him. I'm really torn on how I feel, I think he should be in a mental hospital or at least should have been there first before prison because something was not right there.

I had a teacher my senior year that HATED me. I had straight A’s in every single class but this one specific teacher. I didn’t know what was going on. I was failing. I took one of my homework assignments to one of the other calculus teachers and she graded it and it was perfect. I took it to my teacher and she gave me a 0. I finally asked her what I could do to make her stop failing me. She said “Your kind always have an attitude.” And I didn’t know what she meant. Then it all clicked. My family is first gen Italian. She was married to one of my Nonno’s friend’s and I guess he abused her. So she hated Italians….all of us. I ended up going in and telling the guidance counselor and being transferred from her class. She continued to teach for another 10 years. 5 of my cousins had her over those years and the same thing happened. She now lives a block away from my parents new home. I see her all the time. She always gives us nasty looks! I’ve never said anything to her or given her nasty looks. Everyone….EVERYONE…. has a horrible time in school. A lot of people have mental illnesses…it doesn’t give you a green light to go sh**t up a school….or church…or hotel….or theater…. We need to start taking mental illness seriously and we need better restrictions on firearms. And people NEED to stop using mental illness as an excuse….can it be a contributing factor? Yes…but it is NOT an excuse.

Also in 1970, the Juan Corona murders happened a Mexican serial killer who was convicted of the murders of 25 migrant farm workers was found buried in peach orchards along the Feather River in Sutter County, California, and I was at Lincrest school his daughter was in 5th grade at the time. I remember myself and a couple of friends our first job was picking prunes at the Sullivan Ranch where the murders took place my friend's Dad was a detective working on that case Frank C . Then in 1976 I lost 28 friends when I was 16 Yuba city bus accident in Martinez ca May 21, 1976, I remember watching the bus leaving the back parking lot. Three students that lived on my street died one directly across the street from me a lot of tragic events for such a small farm town community.

It fascinates me to hear about pre-Columbine school shootings because before that happened, it was never something I would have imagined could happen. Nowadays, when there's a school shooting, although it's equally as upsetting, it's not at all surprising. There's no urgency in telling the people you know, it's almost part of a casual conversation. Like a "oh, by the why, did you hear?" topic. My oldest son is almost 12 - when he came home and told us about his first active shooter drill in kindergarten I was bith horrified, angry and thankfuk. Our district has great security measures that I'm thankful for every day. You cannot get into the schools without scanning your driver's license and speaking to someone over a speaker, which has a camera in it sonthey can see you. When I have to pick up my kids from school, I can't even go inside and get them - they bring my boys to me at the door. It's a pain in the ass and obnoxious, and when I'm in a hurry and annoyed I remind myself why it's like that.

Obviously the victims who died and those who were injured and or traumatised. If l was on the jury it would have found it really hard. Especially if he truly had mental health issues. To be on death row all those years must be horrible. I don’t think he should be set free, however I think a prison like Broadmore might be better for him.
It would be able to monitor him closer then a case file drawn up. Maybe then his mental health issues could be properly identified and treatment given. Then he might be able to take on board exactly what his actions had down to everyone. But never released as it would happen again.

I was bullied at both of them. I even had access to a gun, my dad was a cop at the time. It never crossed my mind to try and sneak his gun to school and use it on people that made me feel a certain kind of way. They made school miserable for me but the worst I ever thought of doing was faking I was sick to stay home. Hello, Emma I was living in Yuba City California at that time and also the riots in LA were going on over the beating of Rodney King. Lindhurst Highschool Blazers I knew a lot of people from that school just across the Feather River separating the towns. At that time I was involved in Meth and had my own problems I now live in London Primrose Hill so happy to be here believe me. Anyway, I knew John he was he had deep scars across his head that affected his motor skills he had to go on SSI benefits where his carer was basically stealing from him and he too got involved in Meth and I was in the Sutter County Jail with him he told me everything. I felt so bad for him I thought he suffered enough and they put him in jail anyways he was so very vulnerable. Did you know that the celebrity-famed attorney Melvin Mouron Belli represented him for compensation? Also after Eric did what he did he settled down a bit and one of his demands was for pizza to be delivered for himself and the students. I also did time in the Yuba County jail where Eric was being housed. I remember that when they moved him for court or attorney visits they would lock down the jail so he wouldn't be attacked in any way possible. It really hurt a lot of people and yes the hero was Beamon Aton Hill. The thing is that I wanted to go into the Navy and get out of that town. I didn't have a high school diploma lack three credits in civics so I took a night class at Marsville Highschool and earned my degree only to get busted again the day before going into the Navy under the influence at 11550 H.S. code violation mandatory 90 days

I'm looking back at your videos, knowing you were pregnant in the most recent ones, and I am just amazed. You are so beautiful and my heart is so happy for you. My face got all chunky when I was pregnant lol. You are so deserving, and I could only imagine such an amazing mom. Thank you for your amazing and individual take on these real life situations.

Your face makes my whole day!!! 😊 Do you think we could learn more about his mental health issues if he did go to an institution? Sounds bad, but what if he could be studied and dive deeper into his brain to figure him out even more?

I wish I had home schooled my son, who is 25 now. He was bullied so terribly, I didn’t know it until his senior year. They put his head in toilets, In garbage bins. Just humiliated him, beyond belief. It completely changed who he was supposed to be, completely!!!!!

I'm not objective about this case, since people I care about were affected, but I will say this, like I said in my other comment, this happened in my hometown. Olivehurst is just outside of Yuba City, CA. I was born on Beale AFB which is right there. Eric Houston is the same age as my older brother, and a year older than me. Most of the time I do feel some compassion for the perpetrators, but I can't seem to for Eric. This man took my best friend's baby sister hostage. I don't know how many students Lindhurst supports now, but it wasn't a very big school back then. It was a giant chunk of the student population being terrorized by him for 8 hours. Children, these were children. I just can't find any compassion for him. Thank you for covering this Emma, unfortunately in my country kids are now taught how to protect themselves as much as possible in an active shooter situation.

Please give this a comment a thumbs up if you'd like Emma to cover the case of Michelle Knotek, America's most evil Mum. The case was famously documented in a book called If You Tell by Gregg Olsen but there's very little about it on UA-cam or in documentaries that is extensive.

I remember the days that that happened I lived in olivehurst California My children were in elementary school The elementary schools Ella elementary and there is a little store across the street from the school I had went in to purchase something and the girl there said that she was going to the school to get her children cuz the schools were in lockdown and I had asked why and she said that there was an active shooter so that was very very scary and it was so sad all the way around such a little town and then years later when I met my second husband his mom actually lived to driveways down from the parents of the shooter

My dad is a paranoid schizophrenic and I’ve seen him in a psychosis state more than once and never has he been violent. I get that there are some cases where people don’t know what they’re doing or what they’ve done but I hate the stigma that comes with mental illness. I’m glad he got the death penalty. He knew what he was doing he had a plan all along.

    Some little known facts to consider;
Eric was born in 1971. In the usa schools did not educate individuals with disabilities *learning or behavioral issues* untill 1975 (eric was 4 years old)
Schools were just trying to figure out how to teach and integrate children who learn at a different rate/different way and havr behavioral issues at this time.
It was new to teachers for them to not be able to kick kids out of schools.. and they had to start learning how to meet these children's needs.
Its still very difficult for schools today but its arguably better in many schools and school districts today

Omg Emma this us absolutely tragic! All of the deaths were sad but Jason's hurt me the most. I have a 19 year old son (also a J name), he loves westerns and war films. He goes everywhere in his cowboy hat. He's famous around here for it. My son is a lovely thoughtful kid that couldn't do his GCSES due to Covid. He was forced to leave school early in March 2020 due to lockdown. He left on the Friday and had a job by the following Monday working in a supermarket on the front line. Hes worked ever since, (going back to what you were saying at the beginning of the video about intelligence).
When you talked about Jason i straight away saw my own son and when you said his hat was found at the side of him i just about lost it. How terrible it must have been for the parents of these kids to learn their children had been senselessly shot. One thing i tell my son is not to wear his hat when he goes into town drinking with his friends, because it may draw unwanted attention. I can't help wondering if the hat is one of the things that singled poor Jason out in this situation 😢😢

I'm not sure. I thought that people deemed having limited mental capacity can not receive the death penalty? Very interesting. I think that life in a psychiatric facility for "the criminally insane" would have been more of an appropriate punishment for him 🤷‍♀️

I'm sorry but I don't know where you got your information but as a student of lhs , Brens was an amazingly calm and compassionate teacher who started at lhs my first yr 88/89 .
He would have never touched a student inappropriately as myself and several others had moments alone with him. Eric chose not to due his notebook or turn in his work. He tormented our school with bomb threats for 3 yrs . I was on the field during his class graduation and heard him say he would make the school pay for him not graduating. He knew Jason looked straight and him smiled and shot him.

Amen. I also went to Lindhurst class of 89. Had Brens as a teacher and he was classy and professional. I also knew Eric and had he passed Brens’ class, he was still short on credits. Let’s not forget he shot and killed people like my friend Jason White and the younger sister of the assistant manager I worked with. Some of the information in this video I’m not sure about

I'd love to see you cover Ethan Crumbly. I'm from the UK so school shootings are such fascinating/heartbreaking/bizarre ones for me. The age of the shooter and how mentally/emotionally mature are they. Or if guns were legal and so readily accessible elsewhere in the world would the statistics actually be the same or is it heavily influenced by American gun culture etc.

I know that all school shootings are horrific, but some of the worst school shooters were Nikolas Cruz (Valentines Day 2018), and Salvador Ramos (May 24th 2022).
Cruz killed 17 people and injured another 17, and Ramos killed 21 people and injured 18, including his own grandmother at her home.

Did ANY other student EVER come out and say they, too, had been abused by this teacher? If not, I'm giving this teacher the benefit of the doubt. I think this killer just wanted to kill and made it up because it justified in his own twisted mind the murder. Him killing other kids makes me doubt all his accusations.

If you are ever in this situation, go. Leave. Don't look back. You did not create this situation. You are not responsible for the reactions of your captor. If your captor kills people, he was always going to - you did the correct thing by leaving. Alway get out whatever chance you have. Police will tell you the same thing.
