Are Gold Refractors Becoming Worthless?

- Gold Refractors are some of the best cards you can get in all of sports card collecting, but I recently was asked the question: "Are there too many gold refractors?" In this video I break down how many gold refractors Manny Machado had in 2013 as a rookie, Aaron Judge had in 2017 as a rookie, and how many gold refractors Adley Rutschman has in 2023 as a rookie. I also discuss if gold refractors are now a bad purchase and what you should consider looking into.
What kills me about the gold refractor now is you have gold shimmer. gold sparkle, gold lava, gold ray wave, gold mini diamond, gold paper, gold sapphire, gold mojo,….way way to much in my opinion!
Flooding the market. 2023 rookies have way too many auto rookies. Luckily, I collect Yainer Diaz....only in 5 of 40 sets.
Yes. Completely agree with you. It's unnecessary to have a shimmer, a Lava, a wave, a speckle, etc. They should make exclusive set parallels & stop adding shit. They're just increasing the parallels because that's what most people assume is valuable. I stick with the basic old-school parallels & sets. I also try to PC what I like & not get hung up on the rest, if the price is right of course.
Plus Gilded a whole set of various gold lol
It's only gonna get worse.
@@natthomson6339 Gilded is a gorgeous card set though.
Exactly the reason why at this point I just PC base rookie PSA 10’s. Growing up in the 90’s, there was that magic of having a player’s rookie card and it still resonates with me today. It works out perfectly for my pockets too since they’re all really affordable (for the most part) now since base cards are an afterthought in the hobby today.
1/1’s are overprinted these days.
Great video! The perspectives on Gold Refractors were quite interesting. 🤔
Another great video! Thank you and keep up the great work!
Excellent video; always love your content
Another awesomely insightful video here Scottie. It seems that the more time passes the more diluted the good stuff gets. I wonder what the print run numbers look like for series 1 this year? Giving all the formats and where we are currently in the hobby?
So you plan on doing a video about Fangraphs projections for the 2024 MLB season and recap 2023 and how their WARS projections held up? I remember you doing a video like that in the past and it was one of my favorite videos.
Great video Scott personally I’m thrilled being a Bryce Harper collector his RC’s aren’t overwhelmed with such an onslaught of gold refractor varieties making them desirable and rare
The only way these cards will go up in value is if Fanatics truly 10x the hobby in terms of demand. As you pointed out in your video, it seems supply was 10x. Great work as always.
The thing that is most important I.M. super H.O is that the COLLECTOR vs INVESTOR battle. The late 80s to 1990s baseball overprint was done with out as many metrics readily available. This video is easily one of the best I've seen in a very long time!!
This type of breakdown is important because the card companies are so secretive about the print runs.
I.M. super H.O 😂😂😂
Thank you for sharing your time and insight !! Really helped me out bro!!!
Well researched and good presentation to make it easy for everyone to understand
Thankfully there's still a consensus that the only gold that really matters is the Topps Chrome gold for a player. If there was no consensus on that, then I think we'd have a much bigger problem
Great show as always, thanks SB!
great video scottie! I think if you're looking to 'invest', it's best to stick to true gold in flagship or first bowman.
Great insight! Appreciate the work.
Awesome video I actually PC Adley and Josh Jung but Adley is crazy popular and I've almost wanted to give up cus his prices are ridiculous. Maybe some of the lesser wanted golds go for 20 or 30 but anything good is definitely closer to 50 or 60 for raw. Josh is down a little but I'm actually surprised that his cards are holding value and selling I just got the topps chrome update mini diamond gold for 50 raw. They definitely are over doing it but I'm still gonna try to get as many as I can🤣
Great informative content as usual Scott.
I have a request for another video. I always enjoy your wax ripping breakdowns on high end product. I was hoping you could do one on 23 Diamond Icons. The breaks I've watched look like most people are just getting slaughtered. Would love to see the numbers. Thanks for what you do!
always so informative, thank you!
Hey Scottie. Always love your videos. I wanted to ask your opinion I have a numbered auto green mojo redemption Elly De La Cruz and want to get it graded but in your opinion should i grade just the card or grade card and auto? Thank you for your opinion. Anyone chime in please.
I just collected his Heritage Parallel Rainbow. Base, Target Red Border, Black Border, Base Chrome /999, Hot Box Purple Refractor, Retail Blue Refractor, Refractor Chrome /574, Silver Chrome /374, and Black /74. Can't afford/find the Gold, Flip Stock, or Super, but I absolutely love the Rainbow. I think overall it will maintain value as long as he keeps putting up 5 fWar seasons, but don't really care if they drop anyway because I just think it's a neat collection to call my own. Great video though! I agree only 5-10% of his golds hold value. I honestly like the Black parallels better, because even though they're numbered higher, there are far less total of them.
Would love to see a break down of color match parallels. do they sell more than other parallels (even if it’s a higher serial number). With all the varieties of parallels, would the hobby ever shift to color match as the most desired parallel? Thanks!
A true Topps chrome gold /50 will always be a cool card
Starting collecting again 2 years ago. Since subbing to Scottie, I only bought boxes to break for my own enjoyment last year. I only enjoy two sets, so I got those. Wait, I did buy one box of Ginter and may have gotten the luckiest 3 RIP Card ever. Forgot. I just put it in the cards now. Got a nice Bryce superfractor last month. Trying to find the right 1950 Jackie Robinson Bowman for me. Paid to convert EVERYTHING to PSA. Really ended up consolidating and getting some really nice Shohei and Trout at low prices.
I see this paralleled “no pun intended” in the prominence of grading. Since an /50 sometimes means /3000 you have to bring additional rarity with a high grade.
Thanks for sharing!
would you say the flagship topps chrome and bowman gold refractors are the best ones?
Do we think that the topps chrome classic gold /50 will stand the test of time though? Cuz I do Scott
The traditional gold parallels should hold their values best.
Hey off subject but I’m a tad confused what’s Bryce Harper’s first auto? 2011 chrome?
Thank you for all your time that you spent on this. It's so appreciated!
Now Im in fear of the great card collapse of 2024. Thanks for the nightmares. 😊!
Just to many sets even with new collectors?!?
I LOVE GOOOOOOOOLD!
The more cards that are printed the better trust me pal!!! I have a dream that every African can have a Wander Franco base Topps rookie!
Awesome video
I like gilded because it's a low print run set. The base are to /99 which is low for a base. That's why I think they hold value. But overall I do agree topps is squeezing the life out of the true parallels like gold and blue
Is Soto’s gold numbers similar to Judge’s of around 1000? Still seems crazy they’re over 3000 nowadays
I think what we’re plainly seeing here is the more collectors that enter the hobby, the more quality of production enters the hobby. So more collectors doesn’t make it better for the hobby. The big card manufacturers are in control of the hobby. They have the data and when they see more sales that means they print more. We very well may be back into the junk era again, junk parallel era at the least. Bowman Chrome 1st autos will always hold their weight. Everything else in the hobby is just a side show for personal collecting with some value.
if from 1 to 10. 10 is full panic mode. I am 6. concerned but not that worried yet. as always love the content
Hopefully introduce alt arts as part of the short prints.
True red, orange, gold chrome & black, camo, Mother’s Day flagship. Main parallels to target. Independence Day was nice in 2018 but not recently. Big fan of the cleats n grab them when I can but completely stay away from Father’s Day
This is why my saved searches are for /25 now, and that’s still affordable for most rookies that are below the popular top 10 for the year
I've been trying to grab 2023 Topps Chrome Bryce Harper Image Variations as I have two of the five /5 and you should see how insane people are. Two people have the raw /50 for nearly as much as I paid for one of my raw /5. Show people comps, they do not care. I just got done doing an Ichiro Topps Finest autograph rainbow and it took forever as you had guys with the /50 asking for MORE than the /5. I can't imagine how these people function in the real world.
Parallels in general have gotten out of hand. We are back in junk wax times and it’s ruining the value of these players in the long term.
This is why grading is important. It provides another level of scarcity.
I have a Q regarding collecting Flagship vs Chrome parallels. Looking at the prices for Adley’s true RC, his flagship parallels sell for significantly more than his Chrome parallels. Has that always been the case for every player going back through history or is that a new trend?
eventhough soccer printruns at relatively recent, i really wonder how this would translate into soccer today, versus 5 years ago for example..
Collectors will catch on and these high print runs of everything will start to reduce. People will start to loose interest.
Unfortunately to many Rookies. The long term value isn't there. It would be nice to have RC on the true rookie and RY on the rest.
Print runs of base, parallels, and everything is crazy right now. This video drives that home. Be selective on what you buy / hold, a lot of ultra modern stuff will be junk (once folks understand there is no rarity)…
Corbin, Gunnar, Adley, Volpe.....are in every sets, parallels etc. I collect Yainer Diaz and he's in 1/10th of everything and still ⅓ the price with better numbers. Im gonna be rich.
As long as they keep increasing the number of colored parallels and inserts the value will continue to go down. I don't see that changing anytime in the near or distant future unfortunately but for people who primarily just PC it may not be all that bad.
5:56 The maths nerd in me had my ears prick up…... 😝
The 3 numbers add up to 3,580. Only out by a
10x more gold cards now than 10 years ago, but also 10x more collectors/investors nowadays.
sux i wanna buy players like witt n corbin carroll but i dont see anything after 2020 maintaining value just too many cards
3600 gold refractors and people are paying $20 to grade regular (non-gold) base cards…
The Golds /50 are either
- Gold non-auto
- Gold auto
- Gold insert (non-auto or auto)
In no world is a Gold parallel a base card lol.
True gold chrome only for me!
I only target topps chrome true gold non auto of players I collect
Talk about dilution!!
Well aint it out of 50 times how many sets outs which in general is still less then autos
Junk slab and junk parallel/wax era it seems we're in. Fanatics doesn't care. Now you have exclusive autos only with them. $ grab while getting little value
Only Topps Chrome Gold matters....
People want numbered cards and now people are complaining there's too many?
Personally, I would rather have harder pull rates and less parallels any day.
Buy what you like, at the lowest possible cost & you might win both the 👁 & $
This is all about Fanatics trying to 10x there money back by making you buy endless of product hobby/retail box sets. They don't care about your top rookie players, even if say someone like Adley Rutschman becomes the best baseball player ever. His RC will not make you rich due to overprinting. ☹ That's why Fanatics wants the license for basketball & football so they can 100x there money from you. 💀💸
First!!
Overpriced AND overprinted!
I mean at this point we are beating a dead horse it’s junk since 2020 we know people are dumb and cards from early2000s to about 2017 are more rare.
Everything is overprinted and over autographed
Fathers Day /50 ??
If a refractor has a print run of higher than 0, then it is overprinted.
Thanks for your nonsensical comment. How enlightening
True gold bowman and true gold Topps chrome truly only have 50 printed. That’s why they are worth way more than the sparkly dazzle gold BS
