Mike Trout Is Injured-How Far Can His Cards Drop?

  • Mike Trout is injured. This statement is something that we unfortunately have come accustomed to as baseball card collectors. Mike Trout's cards have been touted by many people (myself included) as one of the best investments due to Trout's performance. One thing that we cannot control however is health and how that impacts card values and legacy. In this video I break down Mike Trout's legacy, baseball cards, how he stacks up all time to other players, and discuss his injury history.

There is now way Mike Trout 2011 Topps Update Card in a PSA 10 should be $1,000 (Injured or not). Way too many cards - 6,327 PSA 10 cards.
Too much supply to warrant long term value like that.

Yup. Agreed. It takes a guy getting injured, sadly, for the realization that such cards are way overvalued in the first place. Honestly, talking about base rookie cards regardlessof product or sport is a wasted effort (except of course for products like Dynasty in Baseball or Flawless Basketball where base rc's are 99 or way less). Even bowman chrome auto's where the print run is easily into the thousands going back to at least 2018 is silliness. It's the same 250 fellas that collect and watch these videos. Demand is strong but not for cards with pops into the hundreds. Be that as it may I have already started piling ridiculous amounts of money into 2024 Bowman Chrome prospects - it's fun!

Trout is this generations version of Ken Griffey Jr.
Junior was an amazing player until his age 30 - when injuries started to pile up. He ended up in the Hall of Fame nevertheless, but a healthy Griffey could have shattered lots of records. But he still finished with 2781 Hits and 630 HR's - it wont be easy for Trout to get there.

Move him to 1st base like Harper
His bat and HRs are way more valuable than CF and more injuries. Anyone younger with speed can play CF.

I am an old timer, and would classify myself as a collector vs an investor. Sure I’ve sold cards along the way, but am a long term holder -40+ years. Trout and Pujols should be huge HOF stars in 40 years from now. I view times like now as an opportunity to target higher end cards on the dip !

I like trout but I think you are being too positive. you didnt even cover the fact that in the last 2 years, forget the missed games, but he has been substantially less of a player than nearly all his previous years. in 2023 and 2024 his OPS is in the 800s with a 250 batting average, worse than every year except his age 19 season.
You can't even call him this generation's Ken Griffey Jr. Not only did Griffey have that 'it' factor, not only did Ken Griffey have a lot more play off exposure, but Ken Griffey Jr hit over 600 home runs. I know it sounds insane, but its looking like Mike Trout might not hit 500 home runs.

  • @FontanaCollectibles

I mean he's basically mirroring Griffey Jr's career. Guy is still a beast in peak health. His cards will stay hot as he is a future HOF'er. I think he will end up getting traded to a contention team and get to a World Series with that team if he plays.

Scottie, don’t think you’re too critical. As an Angels fan I worry about the same thing you are discussing. He is going to be tops in the discussion of all time greats, but he has to play. I never thought about him leaving, but maybe for card values, this has to happen. Who would rake the chance on him? Who could bring value to their club; perhaps a smaller team who needs a DH. I don’t know, but it would be a huge gamble to bring him over at even 50% of his current pay.I hope he can bounce back, as I continue purchasing his older cards. My Angels have really got to rebuild and stop bringing in old washed up players, and there are a lot of examples. Unfortunately, Trout is appearing as an old washed up player who can’t stay healthy. And now I have to hope he can return, once again as healthy and productive. Once again, we can just hope. Thanks Scottie.

Unfortunately, Trout's taking a similar path Griffey JR and others that were great in their prime. Everyone (including me) thought JR would break the HR record. We saw how that turned out - 630 instead of maybe 730 or more. Down a steep hill after his age 30 season. Trout is still one of the all-time greats, but should be slid down quite a few notches because injuries. Kind of disappointing though, another 'woulda coulda, shoulda', because injury prone got in the way of another "generational-level" talent.

Anything I don't have dupes of stays in my collection until he makes the Hall and I'm old enough to want to sell my assets. I see Scottie B addressed that first question gracefully, and what he said is proven in his videos over the years. He even owned a card shop if you weren't aware. You are a true Trout collector, man, and I think it's great you aren't bailing on him. Not saying that's what Scottie suggested, he always argues both sides. I'm Blessed with the Trouts I have because they were cheap when I bought them. But I agree with the current buying opportunity totally, and I need a 2011 Update parallel still. Hi Walter, I am not trying to deceive anyone. I still do collect Trout, but I did move a lot of my higher end Trout. I do move cards of players when something else I want pops up. I sold a lot of my Trout cards to buy a 2009 Bowman Chrome auto refractor. Then a grail card then popped up at the national and I traded that Trout card for a 2001 Bowman Chrome Albert Pujols Bowman Chrome auto.
I also had a basement renovation that I sold two other Trout's to cover. I am not out on Trout, but the way things have worked out I do not have much high end right now in the moment. I still like him as a collector.

Anybody who says Mike trout was never that good , probably never watched baseball and only heard of him once they started buying cards in 2020 . He will always be one of the greats of three last 10 years.

he was always an overhyped player... 10 years.... pujols, jr, mattingly, are the 3 big 10 year Supremes. i guess. ichiro is as well. i never knew y everyone in the world thought he was the greatest ever. his numbers dont even compare to the guys ive mentioned except ichiro... he over hyped... stupidly... very very stupidly... i never spent a dollar on his cards cuz of this...

Shame that a guy at his level is required to continue to produce every year. He is one of the greatest. I wish more people just collected and not everything being an investment

He needs to drop 15 lbs in order to stay healthy. This isn't the NFL.

Thank you for that feedback, I appreciate it! Generally the content is the same, but I may be portraying it too negatively. I’ll try to have more neutral on the next few. Keep an eye out for the next few videos.

Baseball is the only sport where you can be a career loser that’s never won anything and people pretend you’re on the level of puljos who has won , done it in the big moments . People don’t realize 70% of your success is where you play . Literally nobody gives a flying fuck about the angels he literally had no pressure his entire career , how many players have gone to the Sox or Yankees that were studs that literally folded like a lawn chair because the pressure got to them. Mookie is the face of this era and it’s not even close I’ve always thought trout was overrated af like one of the most overrated players in the history of the sport definition of good stats bad team player
