    Baseball cards can be confusing. There are prospect cards, rookie year cards, call up cards, and true rookie cards. When looking at all of these different options many collectors might not know what to target. The race is down to two types of cards as the go to card for a collection. Bowman Chrome 1st and the rookie card. In this video I break down Bowman Chrome 1st and the rookie card and discuss why each have an argument being the go to card to buy moving forward.

    I recently have partnered with Whatnot to bring you a completely free pack opening. On Thursday December 15th, I will be opening up a lineup of great boxes, and every pack will either be completely free or sold for only $1. Every person who signs up for a Whatnot account and joins this Whatnot stream will have a chance to win one of these packs. When you sign up with my link, Whatnot will give you $15 to spend on whatever you would like (including the $1 packs in my livestream), and will also be giving $25 to Christmas Cards for Kids.
    Christmas Cards for Kids is where I will be taking all of the referral money from my Whatnot referral link, and giving away boxes, packs, and singles to kids across the country this holiday season. My goal is to provide boxes, packs, and singles to kids who normally wouldn't be able to afford them.
    Please sign up for a Whatnot account with this link and make any purchase to contribute $25 to Christmas Cards for Kids.

    I am one of the few people in this hobby that still enjoys collecting base rookies. I know the print runs are high, but from a collectors standpoint it’s affordable and the cards themself are still significant to me. I guess you could call it prospecting on the cheap. I consider myself a collector only. I do not sell cards, so this still remains fun for me.

    Personally I think the 1st bowman chromes for a player like Wander or JROD will outsell their flagship base 10 out of 10 times going forward. Topps has wrecked flagship rookies by having much higher print runs and devaluing the “rookie” by throwing the rookie logo on 300 different cards and inserts

    I like the build up to the ultimate point: historically, when RCs were clearer, the flagship cards are preferable, but I think you’re on to something for players with RCs in 2019 to current. This is due to print runs AND the number of sets produced with the RC logo.

      @Guy Incognito A player has one 1st Bowman Chrome auto. Better than 300 trash 2nd year insert "RCs". Releasing "RCs" in a player's second year is some '50s nonsense. It's almost 2023 and we can't have rookie cards of players with 400 plate appearances. Yeah, that's freaking lame. They're killing the RC.

    • @HobbyChamps
      @HobbyChamps Рік тому +1

      @Guy Incognito Talk about pedantic. Your argument against the 1st Bowmans can be made tenfold with the fake RC logo cards. Complaining about a few while heralding hundreds is essentially a self-own on your part.

      I agree, the RC logo has become way overused and as a result has lost a lot of its impact. Insert cards should not have the RC logo. If a player has a Topps Chrome RC, their Topps Chrome Update should not have a RC logo. Just a couple examples

    Pop counts matter. I want SP or SSP RC’s only. Base RC’s are just penny sleeve worthy now. I do like Bowman Chrome 1st a lot but again variations with low count are the key. The days of collecting any Base are just over until they cut print runs by 60-70%, which won’t happen. I have roughly 70 Topps base Wander RC’s, but there are a literal MILLION of them. I have the Ssp Wander in Psa 10 and there are 28. Buy smart.

    All you need to do is go check the prices for rookie auto and 1st bowman auto to see who is really king. 1st bowman is the ONLY way to go forward. 1st bowmans have been king. My preference or yours doesn't matter, the market dictates who is king and it definitely has spoken.

    I feel like there's supposed to be some skill/research/luck/stakes in collecting. It takes literally none of these things to know who the best rookies in a class are going to be.. You'd have to be living under a rock to not know wander, etc were hot for 2022. It does take research knowing all the hottest 16 year old internationals and skill to pick your favorites and luck to roll the dice and invest. If people went heavy on wander and disregarded jrod in 2019, 20, 21,, they pay the price, and vice versa if you fell in love with jrod. Are Elly de la Cruz and Jackson Chourio going to be Acuna and Soto, or will one or both fall off. That's something you have to decide today for the big reward. If you buy their RCs in 2024, then the answer to my question is already known, and that should be less valuable/rewarding.

    Love your videos. @5:34 you mention the 1st Bowman being airbrushed. Those images are in fact from their professional debut in Rookie League where the team names and uniforms are the same as their big league counterparts (minus the MLB logo).
    I've worked for several MLB teams doing game presentation for spring training and talked with photographers personally.
    Once they go up to A-AAA ball the uniforms are typically different. But sometimes they get the images at spring training. The give away is usually the uniform number being in the 70s or 80s for non-roster invitees at spring training.
    One could probably Google the box score for their games and figure out when they wore that uniform number.

    For me, it's 1st Bowman &/or 1st Bow Chrome. Look at the NFL & the NBA. How many rookie cards are there of guys who NEVER even make it to a practice squad or past the NBA Development League. If they're going to keep making 25-30 different brands, don't put every good rookie in every brand. It's a far cry from when back in '89 you only had Topps, Donruss, Fleer, Score & Upper Deck. Even when stadium club, finest, Select, SP, and (the reemergence of) Bowman came into play there was plenty of choices. It's just gotten way out of hand re the brands, the parallels AND the parallels of parallels.

    As for the nuances with Bowman like the fact there are some guys that are auto only, it is not a negative factor, it is a fun wrinkle that true Bowman enthusiasts enjoy.
    Also- your point that there are many years of prospect cards but only 1 year of RCs, non-1st prospect cards are equivalent to veteran cards. It's basically a minor league rookie vs major league rookie.

    I think a lot of people like the prospect cards because of the game of prospecting. Baseball is the only sport where prospects have years in the professional sport before they make the majors, gives so much more time for prospecting. Means its the only sport where you can prospect on players for quite some time and find under the radar players before too many others find them. I myself prefer Bowman 1st stuff mostly because I don't follow the MLB so closely (I'm mostly a basketball and basketball card guy), but I find my fun with baseball in following players on their journey to the majors. It's like the MyCareer version of following a sport.

    1st Bowmans are king just for the fact that it takes 2-4 years for a player to actually debut so the prices fluctuate. You can pick up top prospects cheap once they slump in the minors for a few months and people are chasing the top rookies in the MLB. I look at a player like Jasson Dominguez and how cheap his cards have become due to playing mediocre and everyone chasing Jrod and Wander. The second Dominguez hits his first HR in the MLB or even just debuts, his value will skyrocket for like a month while everyone goes crazy. The only true prospect card to own before that time is the 1st bowman

    What drives me nuts is how Pitchers are valued so much less than Hitters!!!! How is the Jarred Kelenic ($100) 2018 Bowman Chrome Auto 1st base worth more than Shane McClanahan ($80) of the same card after the 2022 season. Since we are talking about pitchers, in the same set Casey Mize ($120) is worth 1.5 more than the same McClanahan card in that set. This is a travesty on Beckett and I feel there needs to be a re0haul of the way these cards are valued..... Same with 2019, how is Alex Manoah ($100) worth 1/3rd of what CJ Abrams ($300) is in the 2019 Bowman Chrome Auto 1st after the last couple years of Manoah killing it in the AL? Its ridiculous.

    Has anyone considered why a rookie card carries a premium over a second-year card? I always thought it was because we do not know at the start of a player's career whether he will be a great player or not. If that is in fact the reason, then earlier would be even better and prospect cards, or at least a player's "first card" should carry the largest premium. The Bowman 1st is earlier than the rookie, but even earlier cards for certain players would be minor league, Team USA cards, college cards, etc. Some players even have high school cards, for example, 2007 Bowman AFLAC Gerrit Cole, 2015 Bowman Under Armour Bo Bichette, 2008 Upper Deck Bryce Harper. Due in large part to rarity, some of these "first cards" are already worth more than their rookies card counterparts, e,g,. a PSA 7 Chong Rickey Henderson > PSA 7 1980 Topps Rickey Henderson.

      But who's "rules" do you & all other collectors like myself should we follow? Look at how many people have football or basketball rc's who NEVER make it past an NFL practice squad or the NBA Developmental league. Why does the MLBPA get to create rules on what is a player's rookie card? All of the cards draft picks & prospect cards from Topps are licensed by MLB.

    • @true_rcs
      @true_rcs Рік тому

      @@kenfreeman5940 Great questions Ken! The way I see it due to ignorance or hidden agendas the waters have been muddied for a couple of decades now. The PA’s involvement in 2005 was caused by “consumer confusion” and since they have the legal authority over the name, image, and likeness of the players they scheduled a press release communicating their expectations on how the rookie card needs to look going forward including “a rookie card must be licensed by both the league AND the Players Association. In other words two license are needed.
      However, this doesn’t negate the fact that card manufacturers, with a legal team of their own, have complied with the PA rules, but have also created their own interpretation of those rules. And so gimmicks, shenanigans, and miscues have become the norm. We also have a set of guidelines that were created by the hobby and recorded by Beckett magazine in the 80s-90s that still carry weight today. So now there are two set of guidelines those created by the hobby and those created by the PA. This is why there is so much debate on what is a true rookie card. I have my own theory and list that I follow and have made it my life’s passion to navigate through the muddy waters. Thanks for your astute comment. 👍🏽

    This is why I prefer not to collect Modern, Ultra Modern and what I call Super Modern aka The Wander Years. I'm sticking to 60s thru 90s cards and focusing on 70s basketball already graded 5 and up. But the stars and HOFer RCs are out of my budget. Like I just brought a 3rd year Kareem (the last Lew Alcindor card) PSA 6 because 1st and 2nd year tall boys are so expensive. Out of Modern and up I would buy serial numbered cards. Those are what's gonna move the market of these eras 5 years from now. Just watch. Because I ust brought an Ohtani Heritage Chrome RC because there's only 999 copies made of that card because I won't be left out on that one.

Bowmans best~ Topps finest.... I get em all if I can. For example, I really like the Ohtani on card auto's and the Topps Finest is on the cheaper side but the auto is crisp, clear and loud with that storm trooper like photo.... LOVE IT. There is a tilt on this debate because current rookie cards are of course from this year where as the 1st bowmans are a few years older and harder to aquire for that reason. 20 years from now that may not be as significant. Also, some of the rookies sneak up on us such as jeremy pena. Pena 1st bowmans I suspect are being graded now and will skyrocket in population soon.
