I had never seen this film until a few short years before they did the remake. Which in my opinion doesn't hold a candle to this one. This is one of my all time favorite films. I can watch it over and over again and always notice something I hadn't noticed before. This is a Classic and I think a must see for women of all ages.
I just located my late mother's 1939 high school yearbook which listed this marvelous and witty movie (one of my favorites) where she mentioned this as HER favorite movie that year!!!!
Just watched this with my dad. Great movie. In the early 1930’s, my grandparents moved to Hollywood. Jane Murfin (one of the screenwriters and a family friend) let them live in a house she owned behind the Hollywood Bowl.
@@Lori1976 that nepotism constantly got Norma more roles and publicity than the hard-working Joan (at least in Joan’s eyes, I don’t know too much about Norma so I don’t have her side of the story)
one of my many favorite lines from Crystal: "Whenever Steven doesn't like what I'm working...I take it off!" I love this movie and can't count how many times I have watched it. It never gets old. Just one of many great movies released in 1939.
This movie made me like old movies, nothing less and ever since then I have come to appreciate the beauty, class and elegance long past of those wonderful classics of yesteryear and this is the epitome to me. The 2008 version doesn't hold a candle to this one, nothing could.
There is no sense of style in movies now. They are all about following some kind of plan that will make the movie be able to play in China, and many of the more subtle and sophisticated scenes just can't hack it with dumbed down modern audiences. Most moviegoers can barely watch a movie for 5 minutes if it's in black and white.
George Cukor wanted Rosalind Russeell to play Sylvia but Rosalind said 'I can't do comedy' and Cukor knew she could. He did take after take telling her "Give it more, wilder, crazier". Roz finally acted like a bug-eyed, gum chewing wildly over acting maniac just to get him to leave her alone. Cukor said "THAT'S SYLVIA!!!! And that is how she played it!
Payhole Everdouche, that's because contemporary films rely so much on modern technology and action sequences that they miss the bullseye with the characters, the acting and the story itself. When a film relies so much on CGI and all the special effects, it lacks the most important things about a story: the plot and the characters. Back then they had to work with what they had for special effects but the acting had to be first-rate. Now I'm not saying that all older films were good but you sure got to say the acting was a lot better than what you see today.
Joan Crawford had to fight for the role of Chrystal, Louie B Mayer didn’t think the role was big enough for her but Joan was no fool and she knew this character was the showiest role and had some great lines. This film easily outclasses the two insipid remakes and its great fun
Wow Rosemary, you know a lot about this movie! Norma Shearer saw the play on Broadway, and pitched it MGM as a vehicle for herself as Mary. She and Joan Crawford were rivals, and didn't like each other. Despite this, Shearer lobbied for Crawford to be cast as Crystal because she knew she was good casting for that role.
What's noticeable - and interesting - is that trailers like this one used alternate takes or outtakes instead of duplicates of the footage that ended up in the final film. So even if the dialogue is exactly the same, how the performers are delivering it is different. You can compare some of these scenes because some of the final ones can also be found on UA-cam.
I'm glad someone besides me noticed this. It's interesting to hear these alternate takes, but in each case the one that wound up in the film is superior. I can just imagine Cukor painstakingly polishing each actress' reading until it was perfect, the way he did with Lady Rothschild in the embassy ball scene of My Fair Lady.
I was never a big fan of Norma Shearer. I should say, however, that Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell are superb in this picture. They definitely make gems like this anymore.
@@jasonhurd4379 Joan Crawford had a point- but Marion Davies was also married to a big-shot and basically had roles handed to her on a silver platter. So she (Marion) was pretty hypocritical in her judgment of Norma.
Claire Boothe Luce's masterpiece. So many brilliant 'catty' lines delivered so well. Would love to see a movie or stage production with today's top actresses. This is the finest film production.
A elegant and stylish classic hollywood movie in black and white.A vintage film of a glamourous era.Jealousy ,hate, Gossip and Friendship among Women played first rate with wit and humour. And it is remarkable that this feud between ladies is a joy to watch and amusing.A A+ Grade Movie with a Lady on the Battlefield about her husband.
She stole every scene she was in. She's probably my favorite comedic actress. She knew more waya to be funny than anyone else. There will never be another like her.
Norma Shearer was a huge star and made the studio remake all of Joan Crawford gowns because they made her look too good. You will note in this movie that Crawfords gowns are just awful and I'm not kidding. It cost the studio a lot of money because they had to remake them more than once.
THIS film is so more superior to the 2008 remake. The cast is phenominal and the impact is so much more fun and interesting. The newer update is such a snooze !
So many films should not be redone; however, the actresses chosen for this remake were actually, I can't remember even one. But I always used to say b4 they ruined it, that Ms Fowler literally was Susan fckin Sarandon!
It's a bit sad seeing that this trailer brags about the cast with 130 women, and it doesn't even pass the Bechdel Test (= there are at least two women, which have a conversation without men, taking about something that doesn't involve men). I want to watch all those stars together, so hope the film will pass the test. Otherwise, the second part of the title is really true ("-and it's all about men!").
