My grandmother Ladd would have folks in Atchison KS bring her the carp they had caught so she could cook it for them. She would score them and cook them in hot grease and all the small bones would just cook up. Making it a much better eating fish.
For Y bones. Or any type of fish bones. Just keep a plate of buttered white bread on the table. Anyone swallos a bone. Simply take a bite of bread and swallow. The bread will take the bone with it. ( White bread is more gummy and sticky onece chewed and swallowed. So it's a better bread for this specific purpose. But wheat bread can work as well as hush puppies. This was the original purpose of having hush puppies with fish.
I just discovered your channel 2 weeks ago. I love everything about it. I watch a lot of these catch and cook shows and you’re my current favorite. I loved the red mushroom episode. I’ve eaten many but I’ve been scared off in recent years. You have me on the fence now. I love them. I think that is very similar to morales and much easier to find.
It shouldn't be that surprising that it's a great fish to eat if you know it's history. Back around 1877 the United States imported thousands of common carp as a food fish. Mainly because of the hundreds of thousands of European immigrants who complained to the government about the lack of carp in U.S. waters. We have Buffalo fish which can live over a hundred years. But common carp are a totally different species. There is no such thing as a Buffalo Carp. Anyway, carp in Europe was, and still is in some countries, a celebration fish. For every holiday or special occasions. Carp was the centerpiece of the celebration Meal. It's like how we think about whole Turkey. It's a fascinating story. Just Google the history of the common carp here in the United States. You'll be surprised.
Nice video and yes Americans need surprised like this because carp is one of the delicious fish in America, you frying in to much deep oil , next time use less oil and just frying one side in till get that brown color and turn on other side and that's it.
I’m with you I saw that UA-cam video too and with as much season as they put put on it, you probably could batter fry a turd and eat it and not know it….lol
First of all thanks for showing people how to score fish. I’ve watched other videos with carp and suckers, etc and no one has ever scored their fish then they complain about the bones. I’ve eaten carp many times smoked, pickled and fried just like you did. I like it best fried. Growing up on a farm where my grandparents and parents went through the depression almost any fish was fair game for eating.
In Asia as well, particularly in southern china carps are farm fishes. In China there are 4 big farm fishes: big head carp, silver carp, grass carp and black carp. They are a lot cheaper than other farmed sea fishes and thus are eaten as a staple.
I've seen that video he was talking about with all the seasonings. He was NOT stretching the truth one bit! That guy put heaping spoonsful of 10 or 12 different spices and stewed it up in a pan..
As far as i know its the immage of poor mans food that got the Carp its trash fish immage. But the romans transported them alive over thousends of miles over land just to eat them. ( They are not native all over europe they got brought to western europe from the ukraine area )
There is a hand cranked maschine you can use to up the bones even more and some people season it with lemonjuice andvput it in the fridge to destroy the bones even more.
hahaha about that guy who put so much spices and curry on the carp, might as well have been on leather shoes and they would still taste good,, now was that the one with catfishncarp where he visits an indian buddy who cooks him the carp back at his place with his wife and baby kid there?
Luke also has another video where he grills carp over a campfire with salt and pepper, because he wants to cook in a way that will allow him to taste more of the carp.
man it sounds like you cutting into a carrot? lol yeah not many ppl eat carp i think also because of all the bones, jewish ppl like em , even suckers i thought were not edible as me and my dad used to catch them then give em to our in-laws to eat like testing them on guinea pigs hahah but they said they were tasty and now after all these years thx to yt i see many ppl do fish and eat em, so was that milk you soak them in for the breading to adhere?
Thanks first. But you could please the wife, and save a marriage, by removing the least amount of scales, just where you need to cut, fillet,(by the way, there is a BONELESS FILLET ON THE BELLY!! look at the mussel structure, cut BELOW the fine Y )bone line! Wonderful fish.
Lol yes it is….it is literally how he did it. And what do you know, they then fried it…sat down as a little family there at the table and successfully ate it, too. Oh my goodness how did it magically work out like that?!? It is as if there is more than one way to do something *GASP*
Started bleeding by cutting the gills a couple of years ago. Makes a huge difference, even on pan fish!
Basically you’re eating a large goldfish.
One of the biggest problems we have today is that people believe everything they hear. Carp is not trashy or nasty. It's just fish.
I am the ninth child in my. Family that grew up near the Neosho River in Kansas. We 17:51 ate a lot of carp as a children. Good eats!
"The other carp are just going crazy!". Yea. DON'T TAKE PHIL!!!
very cool.
i love the carps and suckers.
The one's that stand on the corner hanging around the liquor store is probably better than the ones that come out of fresh water.
Looking forward to the pressure canning video. Really am enjoying your videos!
I smoked a carp for hours one time and it was delicious. Bland on their own but perfect for adding seasoning to, the tofu of fish.
Good stuff!
That young man , has a gold mine of information sitting there with him , grand pa

That's what a curry is. Lots of spices.
Best way is to skip scalling, and just skin the carp. Both sides. Then let's see what you do next.
What do you use for your beading mix?
I love Zatarains. Best ever. By the gallon at Sam's or you can get it online. Put fillets in milk first.
While station in Germany I ate carp baloney fried and not bad
Carp is very bland, but if you like it, great 😃
You gotta season it.
