I feel like underwater combat was plausible with the simpler movesets of tri/3U, but with how complex combo branches have become for most of not all weapons it would mean a gigantic amount of work to bring underwater back
Honestly, pretty damn true. Same with Charge Blade not even being in the game then so that would be a whole retooling it would have to go through to do Battles underwater
MH3U is my first ever Monster Hunter and I played it with friends in middle/high school.
We barely made it past Goldbeard and tried to farm its armor. Recently, I picked 3U up again and watched the stats. We only killed 3 Goldbeards. I remember farming it for so long, it's insane to me we only managed to kill it 3 times.
And so, I started a new save file and did the whole game all by myself.
I'm in front Goldbeard for the first time in years, this time i'm alone, prepared to lose a few times. I have a full Azure Rathalos armor, and a Brachydios Longsword.
I killed it in 15 minutes.
Unreal. A boss this hard, where we struggled at 4 in the past, done in 15 minutes solo.
And so I could finally do the rest of the game, and do my first ever Dire Miralis, the last black dragon I never hunted.
I went through G rank, and killed Dire Miralis in 30 minutes.
The last monster I've never done in 3U is Abyssal Lagiacrus now, and I don't want to grind the ranks to unlock the quest LOL
I feel underwater combat could absolutely be refined to be more enjoyable. But one thing I never understood was the lack of a panic dive function cuz some attacks would reach you if not using a shielded weapon. There was straight diving down but it felt a bit awkward to pull off effectively
If they brought back underwater combat and had similar movement patterns like the wirebugs in Rise I think it would be just fine. Maybe you have a little ghost fish or something that you cling onto underwater or maybe even nothing at all. Just the enhanced mobility. Also the Insect Glaive could still technically work underwater. You could still gather essence, and instead of a normal jump maybe it's an extended swim forward with more momentum that let's you mount underwater. Instead of flying above the monster for that piercing move I don't know the name of, it could be a swim upwards stab kinda like a harpoon. You could still do the gen 5 "don't touch the floor" but instead you just kinda swim and attack up and down the monster like it's a Tony Hawk grind rail.
Evasion+2 gets you trough Abysmall lagiacrus tackle. Back then i enjoyed evasion a lot.
I do enjoy underwater combat, but I think a lot of the problems I have with it could be fixed if your general movement speed and dodging distance was increased, and most important, ditch the upward/downward dodge and give us a backwards one
Also the one monster people say can't be soloed is the regular Jhen Mohran (not the subspecies) in G-Rank, which is an event quest only so it has bloated hp. Its subspecies however is very doable solo.

BTW, are you going to try Jhen Mohran too? High-rank versions in both village and hub unlock with the "Dragonship Duty" village request. G-rank version is event only, but man, what a hard quest. There is Hallowed Jhen Mohran too, but it will be more trouble to unlock: hunt every other monster except for Savage Jho, Lucent Narga and Abyssal Lagi.

I should probably speed up my playthough of 3U. I have gold and silver unlocked but I now gotta beat them then grind to unlock Lucent, Hallowed, and finally Abyssal.
I do recommend using underwater balista for part brakes and more (literally free) damage. He passes by dragonator after he raged, he makes a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide u turn, then ascend in front of the dragonator.
For me (a switch axe user) this fight is hit him some then sheathe, and unsheathe then sheathe again. I do not like underwater combat with most melee weapons.

Oh, regarding what we think of underwater combat, I'd like to see it returning especially for the super detailed ecosystems and new aquatic monsters created with the World treatment. The ledges and irregular terrain from gen4 bother me more than the water in 3U tbh.
I understand you don't want to try Lance in water, it very effective but I find it boring. And even though I main GS, I don't like it much underwater. I loved the Gunlance tho, it is so much fun with the forward lunge mobility and the upstab range, it made me actually like the aquatic hunts. Stick with the weapons you enjoy using, but it is worth trying the others.

I do agree with you this was the gatekeeper for G rank and I managed to do it by myself but goodness it took a bit
From what I remember, Hollowed Jhen Mohran is the next mandatory siege fight. The only caveat is the fact that ship health is extremely low, so in this instance, you must be on top of every possible instance where Jhen could hurt your ship as at any point you falter you will fail.

Don't scare @Uno_Hunter like that!! I did it many times, learn how to stop him to attack the ship on first phase, secound phase dish out that dps break the arms so he goes back. I'm not saying this going to be easy but when you know what you're doing this pretty manageable fight to solo.
Nah Hallowed Jhen won’t happen till end game.
I recommend making Goldbeards Set whit Ceadeus X waist. Its a Pain to make, but insanely good for a set, its hg Earplugs, and Handicraft, and many slots.
Its good enough tocardy you in Endgame.
You sould switch to air drink btw, it does the same as supplie, but increases your gauge.
Uno should use bowgun underwater with his depth perception
My depth perception is also bad out of water lol, and I don't really like bowguns in old world.

I think the bigger problem with underwater combat was your options for controllers, the bulky wii remotes or the damn ds with two joysticks and some smart button comboes from devs water combat would be easier and more fun
I think if they just sped up the swimming when sheathed it would make it a lot better. The worst part for me has always been constantly chasing down the monsters underwater. More versatile underwater move sets would be nice too.
They did make a Skill for faster swimming

i miss the underwater fights because we are so used to land based fights getting thrown into this environment where we have zero advantages makes the fights a proper challenge its unfair because we cant swim like these monsters so you have to play smart and be patient
You can solo this game I done it and many people did it even when the serveur was Online BUT some of those guest will be real pain without proper meta build or cheesing it... That gold and silver arena I have never done it properly without the Lance and block till I win. But you definitely can get to Dire Miralis easily solo. If you use dios weapon even more easily.
Does Uno know? that Goldbeard has some of the best armor in MH3U. If not, who’s going to tell him?
If I can fit evasion on it, then I'll consider it. If I can't.......thats gonna be a nope for me
Hey uno i have a question i just got to G3 in monster hunter generations ultimate and is the lao shan lung dual blades good with the full armor set of shogun ceanataur

I would have no idea because I mostly use Longsword in this game and only played dual blades a few times. (the only dual blades I have is Kirin)
If u do do a livestream and allow people to hunt with u I can join
I mean the servers are going down in a few days so idk how that would happen even if I wanted to.
