Ceadeus really does capture a kind of ‘mythical’ vibe, doesn’t it? I think you said it best, it feels like something that would end up as a myth. Super fascinating and cool.
I think repelling ceadeus also put the monster hunter guild's cannon philosophy about living in harmony with nature into the gameplay. You help the sea dragon with its pain and send it away without killing it, no lasting harm was done to either party. To me it really exemplifies what the guilds message means more than all the elder dragon culling in the other games.
to add with the Music of Ceadeus battle phase, its sung in a Bulgarian folklore choir style. Which was used in the Ghost in the Shell movie intro as well. this particular style of vocal arrangement really highlights the ancient, mysterious and beyond human aspect to the subject which fits really well with Ceadeus, because you get the feeling that, his existence precedes human time. a grand majestic creature who ,in happenstance, caused the settlers disturbances, but not in a predatory instinct type of way, but more in a greater cosmic being's actions unknowingly affecting lesser beings.

tri and 3u are my favorite monster hunters and ceadeus is big part of why. he just feel....really special. a elderly sea beast that is not even a threat. a gorgeous, ancient animal. the third gen had the best feeling environement and world i find.
To me ceadeus always felt special. There is just something about the atmosphere around him that makes ceadeus feel so majestic and memorable all these years later. Even now after all the crazy elders I’ve encountered in the series none of them can dethrone ceadeus as my favorite.
I didn’t realize it fully until randomly this video came up in my feed. I never wanted to stop or hate ceadeus, unlike other big fights at the end it didn’t feel malevolent at all. And the setting and music and design of the whole thing was phenomenal in retrospect.
That’s another thing Ceadeus captures so wonderfully. He truly feels like benevolent creature that has no malicious intent. It makes you feel bad for having to fight him. Yet you know you have to in order to save the village.
I think it’s worth noting the cutscene where Ceadeus breaches and swims away as you and Cha-Cha return to Moga is called “Spoken of Forever”. Not to mention I love the (presumably) Wyverian lyrics that play both during the fight and during the final cutscene.
Cedeus made my jaw drop the very first time I encountered it in Tri, and it still makes me smile and feel a lot of joy when I do face it. The music, the design... Whenever someone asks for a majestic example of a monster, he's always my first choice

Throw that aside, take it out of the equation, and you just have the story and the main message that is trying to be told - which most of the time is pretty good. @khailils - There is a difference between a bad story and a bad plot.
Ceadeus' theme song is one of the very few video game OSTs, let alone the many fantastic ones within MH as a whole franchise, that gives me goosebumps. A phenomenally symbolic fight that makes you feel like you wish it was a full open world to explore all the ancient history - it was hard to fight Ceadeus sometimes (or abyssal lagiacrus) sometimes due to wanting to explore the arena

Tri was my first Monster Hunter game, and you're right in that there is this almost mythical feel to both Ceadeus and the game itself. That feeling was what grabbed me, and I've been playing ever since.
Really made me see Ceadeus in a different light from when I first played 3U, makes me want to buy a wiiu just to encounter and hear his song one more time. Great vid❤

Great vid! Ceadues and it's theme is so iconic. When you mentioned that this was the deepest we swim I instantly thought of Abyssal Lagiacrus. Although we fight him in the same location just the name and color sceme make it feel that much darker and deeper.
My first MH game was 3U. It always felt like the people in Moga were portrayed as having a very deep respect for nature and your hunts never felt like going on adventures and fighting these big monsters. It always felt like you were going out to either protect the village or be a mediator for the balance of nature and I think how the Ceadeus fight plays out was a really good representation of it.
2:47 very similar to rodents of the real world ironically. Their (for lack of a better term) tooth regeneration requires them to consistently break them or else they’ll grow so long they’ll pierce themselves
I would love a remake of MHTri. But flesh out the world and ecology like MHW. Improve on the swimming mechanics, maybe add a boat so you can sail to further waters or latch onto a large fish and control its movement
Ceadeus was probably the only fight that makes a case for underwater combat returning at some point to the franchise. Absolutely loathed fighting stuff like Lagiacrus in the normal water sections, but this fight was really well done.
Ceadeus was the first elder dragon i have ever hunted and slain, as monster hunter tri was my first ever monster hunter game. When the final phase of the fight started and the music started playing, I had only one thought for the entire fight: "This is it. Now or never" Also, the "Cea" in Ceadeus could very well stand for "Ceatatian", the latin name for whales and dolphins. This would make Ceadeus "the god of whales", which i think is the most badass name and title a underwater monster could have.
1:36 On the topic of octopus in monster hunter, there was an underwater rock formation in area 11 that I mistook for an octopus monster on my first playthrough of the game. Took me a lot of courage to get anywhere near it, I even tried using the monster journal function to see what I was looking at, but it wouldn't show anything when trying to select it. I still, to this day, find that rock formation unsettling.
Excellent video. I was fascinated with the ocean as a child, and I think it’s one of the reasons I liked MH3Tri so much, even if the underwater combat wasn’t great. Ceadeus was my absolute favorite monster in the game
So, a note on pronunciation: "-deus" being clearly Latin in origin indicates possible Latin phonology. "C" in Latin typically makes a "k" sound. (To wit: "Julius Caesar" should actually be pronounced like, "Yulius Kaiser" in English, and is incidentally where the word "Kaiser" comes from to begin with.) Therefore, "Kay-ah-day-us" would likely be a much more accurate pronunciation. Not sure if this is what the devs intended, (I like to get in fights about how "Tiche" should be pronounced in Elden Ring, so what do I care?) but this seemingly what the word origin phonology is telling us it should sound like.
I always read it as “see-ah-day-use” or “see-ay-dee-us” or maybe “key-ah-day-us.” As Ce in the beginning of a word often vocalizes the hard vowel. Personally the second guess is my favorite
@@Reece_107 This comment was posted when the video came out. At the time, "monster" was spelled "monter" in the thumbnail. It was then corrected after the comment haha
I was about 9 when I first finished Tri and took down the Ceadaus. It was one the first game I ended really, as before this point I wasn't much into games other than good ol' Tekken 5 with my dad. At first I was afraid of fighting a great Jaggi, like i saw Jurrasic Park recently and was scared as hell. Now I'm 21, and I still remember the music and boss fight. I've played a few Monster Hunter games before, namely World. Alatreon is great, and Fatalis was probably the toughest combat I've ever experienced in any game. But nothing have or will ever come close as the sheer wonder I felt against this godlike being. It's the perfect ending to the game and the perfect monster to me
This is what I love about the older Monster Hunter games. As much as the hunters are all about "The Thrill of the Hunt," they also seem to have respect towards nature and even to the monsters They are not necessarily just hunting Ceadeus for sport but to help keep things in balance with nature. I absolutely love Caedeus! I wish we had more monsters like Abyssal Lagiacrus, and Goldbeard Caedeus which can only be fought underwater, as it sets up some pretty interesting challenges for the player.
3u was so kino and probably has the best mix of the aesthetic of the environment and the people that live there and the balance of nature especially when you break the horn and Ceadeus now not having pain goes back out into the ocean. iirc in 4u one quest fluff was just some lady walking into a active volcano and annoyed the monster defended their nest so you hunt them down, IMO it's the last one that had a feel of a village trying to live in peace and WITH nature.
Something feels a little off about solving the problem of a monster's horn growing over its eye by only breaking off the tip of its horn, while leaving the base - the part actually irritating it and impeding its vision - largely untouched.
These might refer to the very ancient origins of the cetaceans we have in our oceans today... once I read of a primordial race of underwater beings originated in the constellation of the "Whale" (Cetus, in latin), specifically in planets around the stars of Kaffaljidhma (Gamma Ceti) and Baten-Kaitos (Zeta Ceti) who were the first genetical ancestors of the cetacean race that appeared in our galaxy and whose descendants eventually migrated or were implanted in the Sirius B star system by the "Galactic Farmers" or Life Seeders of our local universe. Since those ancient times, the prototypes of great whales and those huge sea monsters of cetacean lineage have been regarded as very loving, peaceful, wise beings... It is very interesting because in the new film "Avatar 2, the Way of Water" there is also depicted a race of huge horned cetaceans who cohabit harmoniously with the semi-aquatic navi (the turquoise blue, cat-like elven creatures particular to the Avatar Saga). thanks for the video, i loved knowing about Ceadeus!!
I want another tri remake. Not right now, since it's already had one in tri ultimate. (I think that was a remake?) But maybe within the next 3 to 5 years.
And there's is consequence of killing the Namazu instead of subduing it will cause a series unpredictable events...... Such as when we came to over-hunts whales, sharks, turtles, and wolves; the alpha predators of their regions are eventually overtaken by their preys....
I know not a lot of people liked the underwater stuff in Monster Hunter Tri, but actually thought it was not that bad. I would like them to rethink some of the water fights like they did in Monster Hunter portable 3rd for PSP. Imagine having to summon it up from the depths and fight it on a boat under the Moonlight at night time.
MH3 was my first, and I will never forget learning that the Laggi wasn't the biggest, scariest monster in the water. Going in for the hunt and seeing his tail above the water, like a whale's. And his theme. God damn. Made me feel like I was bitch slapping Poseidon himself with a stick.
For me I like to think the name ceadeus is inspired by the phonetic sound of cea being the same as sea and the deus part coming from latin making him the literal sea god.
Ceadeus feels like a Free Willy situation in that it causes problems but once they're dealt with, it's content to be free. And that makes for a fairly happy ending because it never was trying to be a threat, it just needed some help from its ever growing horns
It's actually pronounced Kai-deus but I forget what cae means in Latin cuz it's been so long but you're on the right path it's a symbolic name and I love this monster and it makes me miss old monster hunter when it was a plausible world filled with animals called monsters not a video game with anime weeb shit
I honestly think ceadeus' biggest selling point is that it is underwater. Its the fact that sailors will have seen it but never had proof that it existed and thats why it would be a myth. However things on land and in the sky are a lot easier to see and therefore explain (foot prints, broken branches, etc)
I really wish more MH games, and MH type games did stuff like this, and even made it clear on your reasons. Sometimes there are animals that are malicious, it kills cuz it wants to, it's an invasive species and is disrupting the ecosystems equilibrium, etc, but many times the animal doesn't understand it's causing problems, and it's easier, safer, and more human to just drive it away than to kill it. The comparison of the view of nuclear energy in comics of America Vs Japan comes to mind, where in America we view it as power; it gives us powers and strength. A radioactive spider game Peter Parker super strength and senses, a Real radioactive spider would give you Leukemia. In Japan radioactive waste creates Godzilla and many of the other Kaiju's in the monster verse(at least in the original depiction I think), which proceed to destroy Japan. Nuclear energy is power/strength vs Nuclear energy is dangerous if not taken care of correctly. So having something like "This monster is hostile to all life, we must put it down" as well as "This monster isn't dangerous itself, but it is endangering others thru it's actions and we must make it leave.", would teach people that while sometimes killing something may be necessary for the safety of others, it is the exception not the rule, and many times you don't need to kill something just because it's a problem.(Looking at the extinct Japanese Wolf.)
Wtf? I only played world and rise, you telling me you can f ing fight a badass monster underwater like sekiro in the older games? That's sick af , why don't we have cool fights like these in world and rise
My fav elder dragon, but also my first elder dragon fight (daora was my first but he womped me in freedom 2, never had the chance to beat him cause my psp broke)
one reason why swim needs to return to monster hunter games fighting ceadeus and other aquatic monsters which ether don't function without water or less unique without it
Ceadeus really does capture a kind of ‘mythical’ vibe, doesn’t it? I think you said it best, it feels like something that would end up as a myth. Super fascinating and cool.
Its armors reflect that too, being Greco-Roman and Egyptian themed, probably the two ancient civilizations with the most famous mythological stories
So much so that the algorithm gave it to me, a myth content consumer who does not play games lol...

While I came into MH with the 5th gen, I've played a decent chunk of GU and 3U. And I have to say that Ceadeus is definitely my favorite right so far
Tri was my favorite. I don't think a MH game will ever pull me in like that one did.
I want another tri remake. Not right now, since it's already had one in tri ultimate. (I think that was a remake?) But maybe within the next 3 to 5 years.
Mammy lil baby love shortnin shortnin ~
I was waiting for someone to do this
All hail Big Horned Beard Whale. Also, “Monter”
And there's is consequence of killing the Namazu instead of subduing it will cause a series unpredictable events...... Such as when we came to over-hunts whales, sharks, turtles, and wolves; the alpha predators of their regions are eventually overtaken by their preys....
Ceadeus also sounds pretty similar to Cetus, meaning whale
Ceadeus reminds me of shadow of the colossus, with the large patches of hair mixed with scaly or bare ridges
Damn I never thought someone would sell me on why the water was cool to have
I know not a lot of people liked the underwater stuff in Monster Hunter Tri, but actually thought it was not that bad. I would like them to rethink some of the water fights like they did in Monster Hunter portable 3rd for PSP. Imagine having to summon it up from the depths and fight it on a boat under the Moonlight at night time.
Interesting note, although the Earthquake-causing legend was used for Ceadeus, most of the Namazu's main design was used for Almudron.
No mention of the beautiful Greek/Egyptian warrior armor?
Good that song is burned into my head I love tri
MH3 was my first, and I will never forget learning that the Laggi wasn't the biggest, scariest monster in the water. Going in for the hunt and seeing his tail above the water, like a whale's. And his theme. God damn. Made me feel like I was bitch slapping Poseidon himself with a stick.
The sick Anubis armor you can make from it.
Running anything that isn’t lagiacrus lance for the hunt? Bold move.
Took me a minute to realize this was a video game boss. I legit thought this thing was real.
For me I like to think the name ceadeus is inspired by the phonetic sound of cea being the same as sea and the deus part coming from latin making him the literal sea god.
Babe wake up a new Tomkon video dropped
Love from a Vaush and Xanderhal Fan!
Ceadeus feels like a Free Willy situation in that it causes problems but once they're dealt with, it's content to be free. And that makes for a fairly happy ending because it never was trying to be a threat, it just needed some help from its ever growing horns
It's actually pronounced Kai-deus but I forget what cae means in Latin cuz it's been so long but you're on the right path it's a symbolic name and I love this monster and it makes me miss old monster hunter when it was a plausible world filled with animals called monsters not a video game with anime weeb shit
i think it's a word play on cetus, the greek whale monster
"there's nothing particularly malicious about how it looks" sir, are you familiar with a bobit worm??
God, i remember killing this bastard so many times just to get his gem. I was going to fo insane lol
I really hope they bring back swimming in mh 6 so that way we can see ceudus in the more current style
still one of my favorite boss
and probably the only monster i like under water
I honestly think ceadeus' biggest selling point is that it is underwater. Its the fact that sailors will have seen it but never had proof that it existed and thats why it would be a myth. However things on land and in the sky are a lot easier to see and therefore explain (foot prints, broken branches, etc)
Great game. Wonderful video. Best boss of any game. Fighting underwater was not fun but, I enjoyed the final battle.
My fav elder dragon, but also my first elder dragon fight (daora was my first but he womped me in freedom 2, never had the chance to beat him cause my psp broke)
one reason why swim needs to return to monster hunter games fighting ceadeus and other aquatic monsters which ether don't function without water or less unique without it
I like how Ceadus isn't outwardly malicious like Nergigante. Like after you break its horn and surfaces, it's like it's saying thank you
Ceadeus is also probably related to "cetacean", the order that includes whales, dolphins and porpoises.
Funny how in Europe we have the similar fable of the lion with a thorn in its paw
Goddamn Tri was so good I need to crack the Wii out again
